Curtis: "Yesterday was a bad day for Josh McDaniels" Is 'the Red Zone' the weakness of this offense?
Transcript
00:00After giving Shyam a hard time for calling this my show,
00:03I will say, Shyam, yesterday was a bad day from Josh McDaniels.
00:06And the real central problem, if this team falls short in the playoffs,
00:11which is so crazy to say they're a playoff team, crazy,
00:14that it will be their red zone offense and red zone defense.
00:18And Vrabel has sort of pushed back on those because he's like,
00:20well, a guy gets to the 19-yard line.
00:22It's kind of inexact, which is fine.
00:24He's right.
00:24But the draw play, the running it into the middle of your line,
00:32that is a place where it truly separates the great quarterback
00:38and the good quarterback and the great coordinator and the okay coordinator.
00:42And it's unimaginative.
00:44There were a couple great designed routes.
00:47When Drake May was struggling, they had a great play
00:48that I think he hit Hunter Henry down the sideline.
00:51But I don't understand the play calling yesterday.
00:53It was not a good day.
00:55You're talking about the two opportunities that had first and goal
00:57inside the five-yard line where they ran, ran, ran.
01:00Right.
01:000 for 2 for touchdowns yesterday.
01:01I would ask this question, and I would ask Vrabel,
01:05how much is he chiming in on the headset saying,
01:09hey, Josh, run it here, run it here, run it here.
01:12And, you know, Ramondre's a between-the-tacklers type of runner,
01:15so you're trying maybe to go inside.
01:18The one time that you had the little play-action goal line play,
01:21you ultimately catch it, but you get called for an offensive peak.
01:23P.I. Matt Collins got to do a better job of avoiding that guy.
01:28That was the worst pick in the experience.
01:30And then there was a couple times where you had a couple play-actions
01:33called down there and a sprint out, but there was a little bit of pressure.
01:37That is an issue, and that was one of the things that I wrote down
01:40in my notes is, like, you get inside the five-yard.
01:43One time they got inside the five-yard line and had first and goal
01:46and had, like, eight shots at it.
01:47And still, because of the P.I. that got called against Keyshawn Booty
01:53running the route, it's like, yeah, you've got to score them.
01:55He has shown creativity in the past.
01:59Yeah.
01:59So I don't know.
02:00Maybe they're saving that.
02:02Like, Curtis.
02:03Saving it for the playoffs?
02:04Like, I don't know.
02:06Like, even Curtis and I in the group chat,
02:09like, the shovel pass to Hunter Henry at the 10-yard line,
02:12good play design, great play design, good play call,
02:15the perfect time for it.
02:16You get down to the one, but then you're just, like,
02:18running into a wall from the one-yard line.
02:21How much is that of Vrabel's going, Josh, run?
02:25Yeah, but Wiggy, you know this.
02:26Like, you can run the football, but you don't have to just run a draw
02:29on fourth and one.
02:31Right, but what are you going to do with Remandio?
02:33You can't really put him on the edge.
02:34That's not what he's going to do.
02:35You can't run some, I don't want to get into the weeds here, Greg,
02:38but you can't run some type of power scheme down on the line.
02:41Like, where's Tonga?
02:43Where's one of your big guys?
02:44Get an extra offensive lineman in there for a jumbo package.
02:47Like, get some body mass on the field.
02:49Like, that's my thing is, you can run it.
02:51I'm okay with that, but I don't know.
02:53But they weren't a heavy set.
02:54They had two tight ends and a fullback.
