00:00Bridgerton actress Ruby Barker is calling out Shondaland about their lack of support
00:04following two psychotic breaks she suffered because of the show.
00:08In an appearance on Oxford University's The Loaf podcast, Barker revealed the hit Netflix
00:13series based on Julia Quinn's novel series caused her to have psychotic breaks, which were kept
00:18quiet in order to not damage the show before it premiered on the streamer in December of 2020.
00:24Barker portrayed Marina Thompson, a character who was a main player in season one.
00:28It was a really tormenting place for me to be because my character was like, you know,
00:32very alienated, very ostracized, on her own, under these horrible circumstances.
00:42She shared that her first break came a week after the cast finished filming the first season
00:46and was checked into a hospital. She was there for about a year before being released as the show
00:50was about to premiere. Not a single person from Netflix, not a single person from Shondaland
00:55since I have had two psychotic breaks, um, from that show have even contacted me or emailed me
01:04to ask me if I'm okay. She explained that as a result of the show's popularity, she received
01:09more work opportunities, but still no support from production or asking about aftercare.
01:14So I was trying really, really hard to, um, you know, just, just sort of act like, you know,
01:21this is fine. This is okay. I'm okay. I can work. In the series, her character Marina is sent to live
01:26with her cousins, the Featheringtons, after becoming pregnant out of wedlock and arranged
01:31to a hasty marriage to Colin Bridgerton. When her marriage to Colin falls through,
01:35she attempts to induce an abortion with a mixture of herbs. At the end of the season,
01:39she learns her baby's father has died in war, but his brother proposes to her and she accepts.
01:45Elsewhere in the podcast appearance, Barker elaborated on the pressure she felt to pretend
01:49like everything was okay following production. It's almost like I had this kind of metaphorical
01:53invisible gun to my head to sell the show because the show's bubbly and fun and all of these things.
