Transcript
00:00Watch out for your family.
00:02They mean well.
00:04No, they don't.
00:05Royal enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the release of the fourth season of The Crown on Netflix.
00:10But as for when exactly that is, and how long until viewers can see a new actor step into the role after Emmy nominee Olivia Colman,
00:17as well as other questions about the fate of the series, still remain unanswered.
00:21So here at The Hollywood Reporter, we're breaking down everything we do know so far about The Crown's future.
00:27When it comes to storylines, Claire Foy played the titular monarch in The Crown's first two seasons,
00:31with Doctor Who's Matt Smith starring as the Queen's husband Prince Philip,
00:35and Vanessa Kirby played her rebellious younger sister Princess Margaret.
00:38Oscar winner Olivia Colman took over as the Queen in season three,
00:42which covered the terms of Prime Minister Howard Wilson,
00:44and ended with a winter of discontent in the late 1970s.
00:48Outlander's Tobias Menzies took over as Prince Philip,
00:50and Helena Bonham Carter stepped in as Princess Margaret.
00:53The fourth season will take place during the 1980s, and includes the introduction of Princess Diana,
00:58played by newcomer Emma Corrin,
01:00and the election of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, played by Gillian Anderson.
01:03The fifth and sixth seasons will see the Royal Baton pass to Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth,
01:08who will take the crown into the 21st century.
01:10Series creator Peter Morgan said the series will enter the 2000s,
01:14with Leslie Manville playing Princess Margaret, who died in 2002.
01:18When it comes to ending the series, initially Morgan pitched a three-season story taking place over 60 years,
01:23with the new cast taking the helm each year.
01:26That eventually evolved into his much-talked-about six-season plan.
01:29Although Morgan had briefly deviated to a five-season plan,
01:32he has since reverted back to six seasons, but reiterated that the series will still end in the same place he envisioned,
01:38saying,
01:39Season six will not bring us any closer to present day.
01:42It'll simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.
01:46So sadly, Royal fans, that means Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship,
01:49and more of the Royal Family's most recent news-making developments,
01:53will likely not be included.
01:55As far as when the fourth season will premiere on Netflix,
01:57we don't have an exact date yet.
01:59However, the latest season, which stars Coleman, Menzies, and Bonham Carter,
02:03is expected to premiere sometime in the fourth quarter of 2020.
02:06Meanwhile, Staunton, Manville, and their yet-to-be-announced castmates,
02:10will not begin filming season five until 2021,
02:13a spokesperson for producers Left Bank Pictures told THR.
02:16So don't expect a season five release on Netflix until 2022.
