Hundreds of protesters marched through Mexico City demanding the government finally implement the promised 40-hour workweek reform. Demonstrators accuse President Claudia Sheinbaum of delaying the proposal after she said the change cannot happen “from one day to the next.”
Workers argue the reduction from 48 to 40 hours is necessary to improve quality of life, health, and productivity. With the legislative deadline approaching, pressure is rising for Congress and the government to act.
00:28Murderers, the status, let them come and see it, let the damned state come and see it.
00:39Urgent, freedom and war, the powerful from the coast to the land.
00:4640 hours now, 40 hours now, 40 hours now.
00:52And there are quite a few 27 initiatives that have been presented at the federal and state level.
00:56Today we are mobilizing, obviously not only to demand that the Mexican government fulfill its promise to reduce the working day.
01:04They had said that before 2030.
01:07The 40 hour week would be reached.
01:10However, we are a few weeks, a few days away from the end of the legislative period and President Claudia Shembu has not presented her initiative.
01:18We want an immediate reduction in the working day.
01:31Well, we say that by 2030, 40 will no longer be enough.
01:3540 is no longer enough, we need more, we need 35.
01:41And in this sense, we do want there to be guarantees of monitoring the process, that there are mechanisms that do serve to monitor how the reduction of the working day is being guaranteed.
01:49We want, we want work.
02:00We have millennials, Generation Z at the forefront, there are even some who are retired.
02:05So, we have a lot of diversity.
02:10Above all, we emphasize that this is not just a matter for one generation, right?
02:17It is for an entire people, an entire society, an entire nation against these abuses, against this exploitation.
02:23Alert, alert, alert, the anti-fascist struggle is advancing throughout Latin America and it is.
02:37Vital, it is necessary.
02:39It is not possible that we dedicate so much of our lives, of our efforts, to first going to our workplaces and then, inside our workplaces, always.
02:53Suffering, right?
02:54With the undignified treatment that our employers give us.
03:06Generation Z also has a great job, right?
03:10Like claiming spaces on the street, but also inside the home, right?
03:14Because if there is no understanding with those we live with, then it will be complicated, right?
03:18The fight must also be done from our most internal spaces.
03:23The bourgeoisie, at night, during the day, like China, the bourgeoisie.
03:34Your son is a student, your worker.
03:42Fight, fight, fight, don't stop fighting for a popular government, fight.
