00:00Considered acceptable for all ages.
00:18Hey, I'm Hal Schaefer, long-time host of Drop Zone TV on the Outdoor Channel.
00:23But now, we are also doing a show called Renovation Hunters.
00:27The outdoors have been so good to me, I wanted to do something to give back to the outdoors.
00:33This is a chance to renovate places that gets families outdoors for generations to come.
00:39It is season three.
00:41And if you're new to this show, I want to introduce you to the most amazing renovating crew on the face of this earth.
00:52Tiny towns in the middle of nowhere.
00:55You never hear about unless you've been there.
01:00Little dogs on a big hat, keeping a train on the track, carrying the load on the back.
01:07These tiny towns make the world go round.
01:13Yeah, these tiny towns.
01:15Renovation Hunters is presented by Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods.
01:28Give it time, it will change.
01:30Kevin, why don't we go over the list?
01:32Let's let them know what they're going to be doing today.
01:34All right, y'all got the schedule I sent out.
01:36So it's minimal demo.
01:38We can get in there, get started.
01:40Carpets, all that stuff has to come out, cleaned up.
01:43I want to get paint on the walls today.
01:45My role on Renovation Hunters is project manager, designer, and troubleshooter.
01:52When I'm not on set here, I'm usually doing Tarkovish construction.
01:56We're doing high-end residential, new construction, remodels, and some commercial.
02:01A variety of things, but every one of those features is critical because we never know what we're going to get into here.
02:08Been doing it for well over 40 years and look forward to continuing it on.
02:12Looks like you got a little work to do there, buddy.
02:17I have to be able to look at a property when Hal and I come out to assess it to see if there's an eight-day build possible that we can turn around something for this family and also in the wheelhouse of our crew.
02:31Now, our crew has a huge assortment of talented artists, contractors, and just some good people with a heart of gold that drives them.
02:42Through these eight days, and that's what it takes.
02:45Wow.
02:46A bit of a change?
02:47Oh, my gosh.
02:48They have been knocking it out of the park, man.
02:50Crew's been after it?
02:51Been after it.
02:51Inside, outside, all around.
02:54Without their dedication, we wouldn't even get close to this in eight days.
03:03My name is Alex Rowe, and I am with my own company, A-Rowe Taxidermy and A-Rowe Construction, back home in Indiana.
03:10As I've grown up, I've had my hands in the outdoors and also in the renovation process.
03:17Kevin Tarkovic, my stepfather, invited me out here to join the Renovation Hunter team crew in our shop back home in Indiana with Taxidermy.
03:24We do stuff all over the country, saltwater, freshwater fish.
03:28We do large mammals, everything from squirrel to zebra.
03:31I didn't really think about it until we got here on the show.
03:34A lot of these cabins have heirloom or sentimental mounts, and it's nice.
03:40I can come.
03:41I can bring my airbrush equipment.
03:42I can touch them up, give these animals a little bit more life, freshen them up as well as freshen up their home.
03:47This is awesome.
03:52Wow.
03:52This is amazing.
03:55Holy smokes.
03:56Holy smokes, look at that window.
03:58You didn't see that.
04:00You didn't see that.
04:02That many people to help us who they've never met, it's incredibly humbling.
04:14It's pretty special.
04:14This is how we did it.
04:21This is it right here.
04:22Right here.
04:22This is your crew.
04:23Go meet your crew.
04:24Absolutely.
04:25Camper.
04:26Camper, Steven.
04:26Mike.
04:27Mike.
04:27A-Row.
04:28Hey, thank y'all so much.
04:29I enjoy being a part of it.
04:30It's amazing what we do.
04:32It's not just a renovation.
04:33It's a family.
04:34This is our mission.
04:35Our mission is to create legacies that last a long time, that pass on to generations to come,
04:41so they get to enjoy what we get to enjoy right now.
04:44Absolutely.
04:44Because if we quit using our natural resources, they will go away.
04:48We're actually pretty close to finish here.
05:06I've got one more gun cabinet to go.
05:08Alex came over today, was apprenticed, so he's now a carpenter at this point.
05:12You can build anything you want in your house.
05:13A-Row taxidermy and A-Row carpentry, too.
05:17He's not going to keep me around, I think.
05:18I am from Richmond, Virginia, and I run the woodshop Lazy Guy DIY.
05:24I am also the head of Stone Coat Countertops.
05:27I also do the social media for wall control, mullet tools, hangtime store, and I do a whole
05:32bunch of other things like wrinkle kids at home as well.
05:35What we're doing here is applying a little Stone Coat cabinet furniture paint.
05:39We actually put a bonding primer on first, and this is our paint color.
05:42This is Midnight Cypress.
05:44So the whole thing is designed to basically bond the kitchen cabinets, be nice and durable,
05:48and it's going to last forever.
05:50It's bulletproof.
05:51You get a nice solid coat with the paint color.
05:53You don't have to go back.
05:54Just one coat, and you're good to go.
05:55It's a brand new product for Stone Coat, and it comes in six colors.
05:58Yeah, see, that's the other thing is I got six and a quarter here.
06:04Rob Ryan from Ginger Woodworks.
06:06For the last 24 years, I've been a social worker in western New York, working with kids
06:10in foster care, as well as families dealing with trauma and mental health, as well as
06:15running my own small business, Ginger Woodworks.
06:18I've done everything from building tables, outdoor playhouses, pool decks, regular decks,
06:25furniture, desks, you name it.
06:28It's been three seasons of changing families, getting them outdoors, and having a lot of
06:34fun with the crew doing so.
06:36So my most memorable moment of season three was easily when Adam and I went and came up
06:42with an idea to bring some of that sheet metal back from the barn.
06:46We took that little four-wheeler dirt bike thing.
06:51Hey, boss.
06:53We got to zip around on it a little bit, and then the fun part was telling the kids who owned
06:57it how ridiculous it was.
06:59He'll break his leg.
07:02My name's Trent Schaefer.
07:05No, I'm just kidding.
07:06My name's Trent Sexton, and I'm from McConnell, South Carolina.
07:11And I run a plumbing company full-time.
07:15I build a few houses here and there.
07:16I do mostly new construction and plumbing.
07:20Kevin wants me here because he hates plumbing, and I'm good at what I do.
07:26How's it going, bud?
07:27It's a rough one.
07:28Just so you know, you can milk this plumbing job for as long as you want.
07:32You still got that checklist of carpentry stuff.
07:34So it might be 8 or 9 o'clock tonight when you get out of here or later.
07:38No, I'll finish it up.
07:39Milking's for farmers, and you ain't no farmer, brother.
07:42Let's go.
07:43It's just a fun thing to be around, and then at the end of the day, it always makes you
07:47feel good to make people happy.
07:50I'm just here to help and be a part of my soon-to-be father-in-law's show.
08:02We're in McCool, Mississippi.
08:03We actually got an invite to come back, do a hunt here, and get to revisit and see how
08:08the family's enjoying it.
08:10Got up, ate breakfast, had homemade biscuits.
08:13I'm telling you, I get spoiled on this kind of hunt quick.
08:16So we're doing a good old-fashioned, deep south hunt for deer this morning, and we're
08:23going to use dogs.
08:24It's something I cut my teeth on.
08:25It's how I learned deer hunting down in Lowcountry, South Carolina.
08:30I'm ready.
08:31I'm ready.
08:32This is just the roots of the south, of deer hunting.
08:40Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, let's go.
08:44I love watching them dogs work.
08:50Party on it.
08:50Oh, yeah, here we go.
09:18Get a jugger off.
09:21We're playing while we go, though.
09:23What, the 19?
09:24Yeah.
09:25Yeah.
09:26Man, Drew Breeland, Tyler Hardy, old Breeland family, you know, we come out here and renovated
09:32their place, and they were so gracious.
09:34They invited us back out, and man, we just have had a blast.
09:38And truly, that's what it's all about.
09:41Renovation hunters, well, it's about making sure that people have places to go to and enjoy
09:47the outdoors with their family for generations to come, and man, you couldn't pick a better
09:51family than the one we did right here in McCool, Mississippi.
09:54So, sweet potato.
09:56Potato.
09:57Potato.
09:59More grass.
10:00Green beans.
10:01Green beans.
10:02Hey, that might be a big start on this one.
10:04I got my dates all wrong.
10:06I could have swore it anyway.
10:08But this is Thanksgiving.
10:10Put some wood under this plate, because it ain't going to hold all this.
10:12Mississippi is the hospitality state.
10:18That's what it's called.
10:19These people live it to the teeth.
10:23I thought we were going to get that shot there at the end.
10:30We went through a lot of vetting processes with renovation hunters before we chose this
10:34family to come renovate this camp.
10:36This family, when you're around it, you feel the tradition, the love they have for each
10:44other, how much they care about what they do, but the passion that goes into it, and the
10:50fact that they want their kids, I mean, they're here all the time.
10:53All the time.
10:54All the time.
10:55So, they make their kids a priority.
10:57It's not about killing deer.
10:59No.
10:59It's about everybody being together, having a good time.
11:02Yeah, we love killing deer.
11:03Everybody does.
11:04Oh, absolutely.
11:05And when these babies get in college, they're going to bring their buddies back in.
11:07We're going to teach them all about it, too.
11:09Well, yeah, that's the thing.
11:26Miss Stephanie.
11:27Good morning.
11:29So, what you got left?
11:31What you doing when you're done?
11:32I've got the back bedroom already cut.
11:34I'm cutting the front bedroom right now, and then I'll have it painted, and as soon as
11:41they're done with the floors, I can pop it in and finish off both bedrooms.
11:44I like it.
11:45Hey, she...
11:45The only person that's got a list in front of her.
11:47You've had your head down, I mean, elbows up the whole time.
11:51She has taken care of both those bedrooms so far, and been bounced around while everybody
11:57else is in her way.
11:59Oh.
12:00Yeah, knocking it out.
12:04My name is Stephanie, and when I'm not renovating cabins on Renovation Hunters, I'm currently renovating
12:11my own 1960s bungalow, and I work full-time in metal manufacturing with wall control.
12:18My boss is here, and he brought the new workbench.
12:22We haven't even launched it yet.
12:23It's just now launching, and it's so awesome.
12:27I got to help prototype some of it, but this thing is going to be great.
12:30They're going to be able to have storage and workspace and move it around their basement
12:34for whatever they need to do.
12:36They're going to love it.
12:39I used to renovate houses with Habitat for Humanity and my dad as a kid, and now I create
12:46fine art and one-of-a-kind pieces for clients, and I also make a lot of stuff for myself, everything
12:52from cosplay to leatherworking to home renovation and custom furniture under the brand Uncommon
12:58Outpost, which I share on social media.
13:02I do a lot of different things, so it's kind of hard to keep track of, but that's why I
13:06like these builds so much, because there's so many different things for every build.
13:15After meeting the family and seeing them all, like, how they get along with each other,
13:20I really wanted to do something special for the kids, so I built this little sneaky mouse
13:26drawer, and I hide something in there.
13:30Hopefully it'll be a fun little addition, and maybe one of the kids will spot it when
13:33they're going through the house.
13:35My favorite moment from season three is in McCool, Mississippi, and we went to meet the
13:42family and some of the folks that used the hunting cabin that we were renovating, and
13:47this little girl comes up to me, and she was like, you're my favorite, I want to be like
13:52you when I grow up.
13:53And I thought that was the sweetest thing.
13:55We got to hang out for a little while at the party, and then at the big reveal, she's
14:02the one who found the secret mouse door that I built for the kids.
14:06And then she took me for a ride on her tiny little four-wheeler, so I made a new friend
14:12named Easley, and then I mailed her a little hammer so that she can get started on her own
14:17renovations, and then she'll probably be with us in, like, season 10, I bet.
14:24What's cooking?
14:27Our buddy, Gary Ford.
14:29Got a little crisp to it on the outside.
14:35Yeah.
14:36Good flavor on the inside.
14:38Took this on the M&M grill out there, but it's the Santa Maria type, which is more of
14:44a steak griller, but I like what he did.
14:47Put a rib rag on there, kept his temperature way down, and basically just let it smoke and
14:53kept turning them all day long.
14:55Derek?
14:56Yes, sir?
14:56Nicely done, buddy.
14:57Thank you, sir.
14:57I appreciate that.
14:58You might be a reluctant outdoorsman, but you're a pretty good cook.
15:03You look like somebody, a great wife.
15:06Our buddy, Derek, from the Outdoor Channel, he is the fall guy of fun.
15:11There was an incident with some fireworks representing a possible electrical short.
15:18Yeah, put that one in.
15:20Be careful, because that...
15:21Mother!
15:28We wanted to pull a break.
15:32It's going to be on Derek, but you couldn't do it to a better person.
15:35His reaction is priceless.
15:37I am glad that I got to test drive one of these before he discovered Mr. Black Snake that's
15:47been hanging out on the limb above him for the last couple hours.
15:51Because when he sees that, he could roll right over the old 500-pound M&M grill and sheer
15:57panty.
15:57Yes, sir.
15:58Sir, are you right?
15:59Yes, sir.
16:00Yes.
16:01No, sir.
16:02Hey.
16:03Okay.
16:04You probably don't know who I am, but my name is Derek Orr, and I am the coordinating producer
16:06Four.
16:08That is why you wanted this!
16:14Excuse me!
16:30They're over there back there?
16:32Yeah they're over there already.
16:34One day we don't have.
16:36Final day, we're here.
16:38A lot to do.
16:40I'm not even going to lie.
16:42But we're going to do what we can do and hopefully it gets done.
16:48That's all I can say about that.
16:50Good morning.
16:52We will be done.
16:54One way or another.
16:56My name's Mike.
16:58Hi, I'm Camper.
17:00One of the owners of On The Spot Outdoors.
17:02We can provide anything and everything that you could possibly imagine for the outdoor world.
17:08You name it, On The Spot X store has it and it will be shipped right to your door.
17:12We're both involved in building custom deer blinds for people.
17:16We also deal with a retail store.
17:18Over a million SKUs on the website.
17:20Time to time, we'll pick up a house that's pretty much foreclosure or running real low in cost.
17:26We'll flip it.
17:28We'll rent it out for a little bit and then we'll try and sell it.
17:32It's always fun to do just to kind of keep you going with the builds going here, just these builds.
17:36It's like you could be doing 10 different projects in one day because you got to keep going so fast.
17:41I mean, you just got to quickly figure out how to do it the best way and then just move on to the next.
17:46I enjoy renovation hunters so much.
17:49Now, don't get me wrong, it's very hard work.
17:52I mean, what you guys see in this little snippet of time is nothing compared to eight days of brutal renovations.
18:01I'm talking dark in the morning until dark at night, sometimes away past.
18:06But even with all that being said, it is very fun.
18:10We love to do it for the families.
18:12We love hanging out with our friends.
18:14And believe it or not, I miss it when I'm not here.
18:18That's the best tool ever right there.
18:20Oh, yeah.
18:21That's my clamp on to an extra piece of wood.
18:23Yes, exactly.
18:26My name is Daniel and I'm Little Camper, Big Camper's little brother.
18:30I'm Kyle Prince from North Carolina.
18:33Just doing a small little construction company, Prince Construction LLC.
18:37Sixth generation carpenter.
18:39Love what I do and really enjoying what we're doing here as well.
18:43Definitely a privilege to work alongside of Hal and Kevin.
18:46I appreciate them letting me be out here and be a part of this adventure.
18:50So this is only my second build being here.
18:53A lot of these guys have been together for a while now.
18:56For me personally, I was really nervous about coming in.
18:59But they welcomed me with open arms.
19:01I feel like I'm part of a family here, so.
19:03It's been great.
19:04It's been nice knowing everybody.
19:05And hopefully this is a relationship that will last a while.
19:08Final touches on the deck.
19:10All we need is some handrail and we are done.
19:14If there's one thing I've noticed is how good the crew is.
19:17Everybody's working together as a team.
19:19It seems like everybody's pretty knowledgeable and it's working out real well.
19:24I think the biggest thing is helping people out.
19:26Remodel these places for families and their kids and so forth.
19:29Where everybody can come together.
19:31It's really neat being able to give that back to other people.
19:38Unbelievable.
19:39Do you notice anything missing?
19:41Yeah.
19:42Walls.
19:43Our walls.
19:44Where's the basement?
19:46That's amazing.
19:48That is unreal.
19:50Over here you'll see a vaulted ceiling now.
19:53When I came inside and I saw the work, it's just totally incredible.
19:57You can tell it's done with a lot of care and I appreciate the workers and the men and women that put forth the effort.
20:05I mean it's definitely special.
20:06First class.
20:07These people put their heart and soul in this.
20:10So this is your crew.
20:12Let's say big thanks to the crew.
20:15We're not worthy.
20:18The crew just never ceases to amaze me what they pull off when they're all beat down.
20:26It's just, it's a gut check.
20:28This is about a mission that everybody is heartfelt invested in 100%.
20:34You have no idea what you're walking into here.
20:37I know how to go in.
20:38Yeah man.
20:39Go.
20:40Yeah.
20:41This is crazy.
20:43Look what they did with the stairs.
20:45Where were we?
20:46Oh my gosh.
20:47They moved them.
20:48That's crazy.
20:49Custom made table.
20:54And because at Maryland I always did puzzles.
20:57This is a puzzle board.
20:58Greatest reveal yet.
20:59And I can put puzzle pieces.
21:00I am happier than I think I've been in a long time.
21:02Season three has come to an end.
21:04But season four is already in the plannings.
21:07Thanks.
