00:00Tackled their third solo challenge to create glamorous swimwear for Team GB.
00:06The pants, they're not quite going according to plan.
00:10Before using their crochet skills to make a deck chair.
00:13Can someone grab me a pina clara please?
00:16Lydia was named Big Knitter of the Week.
00:19You should be proud because the fit is lovely.
00:22A feat of engineering.
00:23Simon lacked a plan.
00:25Just trying to make it up as I go along.
00:27Tracey missed the mark.
00:30I'm not sure the flowers have worked terribly well.
00:33But it was Stephanie who was cast off.
00:36Thank you very much indeed.
00:39Now, it's week four and our seven remaining knitters better have brought their creativity,
00:47their A-game and of course some adorable baby lambs.
00:50Because it's Kids Week on Game of War.
00:57Hello knitters and welcome back.
01:02I hope everyone's up for a bit of fun this week because it's Kids Week.
01:06So, for this week's solo challenge,
01:09Di and Sheila would love for you to make a costume
01:11that a toddler can wear to a kid's fancy dress party.
01:16So, everyone, for this solo challenge,
01:21we would like you to make a unique outfit,
01:25a standout design,
01:26and lovely stitch work
01:29so that when we look at it, we're wowed.
01:34So, crochet only.
01:36Your outfit should have three elements to it.
01:43It should be an instantly recognisable design.
01:48And, as Di said, the best possible choice of crochet stitches.
01:53By now, in the competition,
01:55we really expect to see a range of stitches used.
01:58Later on, we are going to have some feral two-year-olds
02:03wearing your outfits.
02:05You've got 12 hours.
02:07So, let's get this party started
02:09and let's get hooking.
02:14This solo challenge will test the knitter's ability
02:17to use crochet stitches alone
02:19to bring a character to life.
02:22Nearing the halfway point of the competition,
02:24the judges expect originality,
02:27structural strength,
02:28and maximum impact.
02:30Only the best are in with a chance
02:32of securing the coveted sheep badge.
02:35My first goal was to be here.
02:38And then I was like,
02:39well, now I have a new goal.
02:40I want to get one of those sheep.
02:42First, the knitters must crochet
02:44the main body of the garment,
02:47carefully considering stitches and fastenings
02:49to ensure the best possible fit.
02:52Next, they must complete
02:53a piece of characterful headgear
02:55to really bring their outfit to life.
02:58Finally, knitters must add embellishments
03:00and accessories,
03:01which can withstand the rough and tumble
03:03of playtime.
03:05The judges will be expecting
03:07all three elements to work together
03:09to create an original
03:10and imaginative character.
03:12Designs like these might take
03:14more than 30 hours,
03:15but in the yarn barn,
03:17they have just 12.
03:21We only have seven knitters left.
03:23What are you expecting to see
03:25when you walk into the yarn barn?
03:26That it's really imaginative.
03:29Also, that their technical ability
03:31is shining through too,
03:33because it's always a balance.
03:34It's always the two, Tom.
03:36It's always creative and technical.
03:39You've got to be able to do both
03:40to win game of war.
03:41Still buzzing from her first
03:46big knitter win last week,
03:48mum of two Lydia
03:48is starting to create
03:50the body of her outfit
03:51in this,
03:52our first solo crochet challenge.
03:55I gave the choice to my girls.
03:56I said,
03:57what would you like mummy to make?
03:58And they said,
03:59a lion.
04:01Lydia is making a lion romper suit
04:04using double and treble crochet
04:06worked in the round,
04:07a technique that builds up
04:09from a central point
04:10to create a seamless shape
04:11and flexible fit.
04:13She's also making a tail,
04:16wrist cuffs and a hood
04:17using the loop stitch,
04:18a technique which forms
04:20decorative loops of yarn
04:21to create her mane.
04:23Lydia,
04:24what inspired the lion?
04:26My girls.
04:27So this is my very detailed plant.
04:31Oh, okay.
04:32The girls helped.
04:32Did they draw it?
04:37That is so cute.
04:39Are you planning to do it
04:40in the round?
04:40Okay, in the round.
04:41Completely in the round.
04:42So for kids,
04:43that's great.
04:43They can pull it on
04:44and there's no sewing up
04:45at the end.
04:46Exactly.
04:46Well, I wish you the best of luck
04:47with your raw umper.
04:50Oh my god.
04:53Also kicking off
04:54with the body of his outfit
04:56and determined to make it count
04:57is Isaac.
04:58I was talking to my mum
04:59and I was like,
05:00man, I really need an idea
05:01for a kid's costume
05:02and she said Explorer
05:03and I was like,
05:05okay, we can work with that.
05:07I'm putting an Intarsia globe on it.
05:09I've just finished South America
05:10and getting to the top of Africa.
05:14Isaac's Explorer
05:15wears a pocketed safari jacket.
05:18He has carefully charted a globe
05:19using the Intarsia technique
05:21and plans to create
05:22a canvas style fabric
05:24using a time-consuming spike stitch.
05:27To make a spike stitch,
05:28you work down into the row below,
05:30pulling the new loop
05:31up to the height of the current row
05:32to create a longer vertical stitch.
05:36He's accessorized
05:37with binoculars,
05:38a compass
05:38and an ambitious pith helmet
05:41demanding clever engineering.
05:44For this crochet-only challenge,
05:46the judges have specifically asked
05:48for creative crochet stitches
05:50to elevate basic fancy dress
05:52into full-blown characters.
05:55Isaac's hoping his choice
05:56will help navigate him
05:57into the next round.
05:59My eye has been caught.
06:01Yes.
06:01I've chosen to do a spike stitch
06:03in the main fabric of the vest.
06:06It's going to take a lot longer
06:06for it to work up,
06:07but I do think it provides
06:09like a slightly more elegant look.
06:10It does look much more
06:12like a woven fabric.
06:12Yes, because they're typically made
06:14of, like, canvas.
06:15Yes, exactly.
06:15It seems a really considered
06:18stitch to use.
06:23It's so much harder
06:24when you don't have
06:25a huge arsenal
06:27of crochet stitches.
06:29Oh, I've never crocheted before
06:30in my life.
06:30Did I say that?
06:31I said I was a novice.
06:33I didn't say I haven't crocheted.
06:35Yeah, right.
06:35Because I obviously have.
06:37Crocheted a deck chair,
06:38OK?
06:38Yeah, not many of us
06:39can say that.
06:41No stranger to making outfits,
06:44fashion designer Holger
06:45is reimagining
06:46a childhood friend.
06:47As a three-year-old,
06:48I had a little fox.
06:51Fox in German is fox.
06:53As a three-year-old,
06:54I wasn't able to pronounce
06:55the K sound.
06:56So whenever I wanted
06:57to say fox,
06:58I said foots.
07:01Holger's Foots the Fox
07:02costume is made up
07:04of striped dungarees
07:05secured with a shoulder strap
07:07and hand-crocheted buttons.
07:09His foxy elements
07:10include cuffs,
07:12a bushy tail
07:12and a headpiece
07:14using a brushed yarn technique
07:15to create whiskery sideburns.
07:18Just started a second panel
07:19of my trousers.
07:22For her solo knit,
07:24librarian worker Dipti
07:25has been inspired
07:26by children's novel
07:27The Day the Crayons Quit.
07:30Once the child puts it on,
07:32hopefully they will look
07:33like a crayon.
07:34The hat is a tip
07:35and I'm going to make
07:36a little bag
07:37that looks like a crayon
07:38in which to put
07:38all your crayons in.
07:40So it's crayon, crayon,
07:41crayon, crayon.
07:44Dipti is creating
07:45a crayon-shaped outfit
07:47in a basic double crochet stitch.
07:49She's looking to impress
07:50with intricate lettering
07:51using Intarsia crochet
07:53on the front,
07:54a technique
07:55she's not tried before.
07:57The hat will be
07:58a crayon tip
07:58and her third component
08:00is a matching bag
08:01for actual crayons.
08:04Instead of shaping
08:05around the body,
08:06Dipti has got started
08:07with just a simple tube.
08:10Shaping-wise,
08:11it is really simple.
08:12You know,
08:13I'm changing the shape
08:14of the child.
08:14The child is going
08:15to look like a crayon.
08:19Two hours into the challenge,
08:21knitters should be well
08:22into the body
08:23of their costumes
08:23and starting to consider
08:25how to add characterisation
08:27to their outfits.
08:28Last week,
08:30it was Tracy's lack
08:31of embellishments
08:31with her bikini
08:32that put her
08:33in the danger zone.
08:34What are we here?
08:35This is a bee.
08:36I'm working on the body
08:37at the moment.
08:39Can I just see
08:39which different stitches
08:40you've been using?
08:42So I've used
08:43trebles and clusters.
08:44Treble stitches
08:45are tall and loose.
08:46Cluster stitches
08:47add raised texture.
08:48I do like the cluster effect.
08:50It's giving
08:51a really nice added texture
08:56Tracy's bee outfit
08:57has a stripy body
08:58in two stitch techniques
09:00and this queen bee
09:01will also wear a crown.
09:03To construct the wings,
09:05she has decided
09:05to use two hair curling bands
09:07which she will wrap in yarn.
09:10What's the structure
09:11of the wings?
09:12Well, I'm bending these.
09:13I'm going to wrap around
09:14and tie them.
09:16Hair curling bands
09:16will add weight
09:17to the wings,
09:18making them trickier
09:20to attach.
09:21How will that attach?
09:22Um, I'm going to attach
09:24like that
09:25so then I will
09:25crochet that bit on.
09:32Yeah, okay.
09:38Elsa!
09:39I've got the body piece.
09:41It's so cute.
09:42It looks random
09:43but it's actually
09:44quite calculated.
09:49Elsa's zebra costume
09:50will feature a hat
09:51with added facial features
09:53and leg warmers.
09:55On the body,
09:56she will use
09:56multiple stitches
09:57of different sizes
09:58creating a natural
09:59looking stripe
10:00inspired by a knitting pattern
10:02she unearthed
10:03from the 1950s.
10:05I like the way the stitches
10:08were done
10:09and I managed to do this
10:11in such a way
10:12that I'd create
10:12sort of irregular stripes.
10:14Creating that weird flow
10:16to make them irregular
10:17makes it like
10:18an actual zebra, right?
10:19Yeah.
10:22By the four hour mark,
10:23knitters should have moved
10:24on to their second element,
10:26crocheted headgear
10:27to really transform
10:28the toddlers
10:29into their characters.
10:31Ta-da!
10:31He's going to have
10:34a little ears on.
10:35I'm going to add
10:36a little bit of extra material
10:37so it gets really,
10:39really fluffy
10:39when you brush it out.
10:41There's this little pith hat.
10:43I love it.
10:44I think it suits you.
10:46It might fit.
10:46Do you look amazing?
10:53Wow.
10:54Shucks.
10:56Last week,
10:57Simon's lack of planning
10:59led to him being marked down
11:00by the judges.
11:01It's definitely
11:02a more focused week.
11:04Currently on the helmet,
11:06I'm using a double crochet.
11:09Simon's night costume
11:10will feature body armour
11:11crocheted in a beginner-friendly
11:13granny square stitch
11:15to mimic chainmail.
11:16There is more complexity
11:17in the helmet
11:18but unlike last week,
11:20Simon's written a pattern.
11:22His accessory
11:22is an ambitious mix
11:24with interlinking chains
11:25all made from
11:26tight double crochet stitches
11:28perfect for intricate shaping.
11:32My biggest concern
11:33is my knowledge
11:34of crochet
11:35and the simplicity
11:36of the stitches.
11:38The judges said
11:39about using different stitches
11:40but I've only got
11:41a few in my arsenal.
11:42I think everyone
11:46is taking this challenge
11:47a little bit too seriously.
11:50Luckily,
11:51I'm on hand
11:52with the party games.
11:53Game of woolly pinata,
11:54anyone?
11:54You have six hours
12:08to go.
12:09By now,
12:10knitters should be
12:10finishing their bodies
12:11and headgear
12:12and moving on
12:13to the accessories.
12:14At this stage
12:15of the competition,
12:16every element
12:17must embody
12:18technical prowess
12:19for knitters
12:20to stand out.
12:21Stiff competition
12:22this week,
12:22what do you reckon?
12:24Something arguably good
12:25will have to go.
12:28Dipti is struggling
12:29with the lettering
12:30on the body
12:31of her crayon.
12:32I think I've gone wrong
12:33somewhere.
12:38This is intarsely
12:39a crochet.
12:40Yes.
12:40I had to learn
12:41just for this
12:42and it's been
12:43quite a learning process
12:44and I hope
12:45the lettering
12:47will be clear.
12:50And you weren't
12:51tempted to surface
12:52crochet
12:53or afterwards
12:54the lettering?
12:56No,
12:56because I wanted
12:57to be able
12:57to show you
12:58that I could
12:59use this technique.
13:00Yes.
13:00Do you mind
13:01if I have a little look?
13:02Of course you can.
13:03Very much so.
13:12Just
13:12tidy it up
13:14a little bit.
13:15Smarten them up.
13:16Smarten them up.
13:17Yeah.
13:17Good luck, Dipti.
13:18Good luck.
13:21Let's go,
13:22go, go, go, go, go.
13:31It's kids week
13:32in the yarn barn
13:33and while I get
13:34the party started
13:35outside,
13:36so we go
13:36in the stitch,
13:38round the needle,
13:39pull it through
13:40and off.
13:41Got it?
13:44Inside,
13:45knitters are more
13:45than halfway through
13:46their solo challenge.
13:47original crochet-only
13:49fancy dress outfits
13:51for kids.
13:52Some are well
13:53into the third
13:54and final stage
13:54of the challenge,
13:55the accessories.
13:56I'm making
13:57the second monocular
13:58to form my binoculars.
14:01The tail will be
14:02crocheted.
14:02These are
14:03little leg warmers.
14:05I'm making a mace.
14:07A mace handle.
14:08This is the bit
14:09Tracy's worried about.
14:10I'm very worried
14:11about that.
14:15But others
14:16are still working
14:17on the main body
14:18of their garment.
14:19My priority
14:19is to try and
14:20take Di and
14:21Sheila's advice
14:22and work on
14:23the front of the
14:24outfit,
14:24make it look tidier
14:25and a bit more
14:26defined.
14:27I can't decide
14:31whether that's
14:32better or worse.
14:34Lydia's face
14:35says it all.
14:40That actually
14:41doesn't look too bad
14:42from far away.
14:43She's still not
14:44confused.
14:45Hilarious!
14:52Simon!
14:53Oh,
14:54this looks fun.
14:55Oh, wow,
14:55look at that.
14:56So, these are
14:57lots of loops
14:57that you made
14:58in double crochet?
14:59Yeah, double crochet
15:00foundation chains.
15:01Fantastic.
15:02This is great.
15:06Instead of
15:07using crochet
15:07alone,
15:09Tracy chose
15:10hair curling
15:10bands to create
15:11shape,
15:12but they've made
15:13the wings much
15:14heavier and
15:14harder to attach.
15:16I'm going to put
15:16a crochet plate
15:17across the back
15:18and put it in place.
15:19So, put it right
15:20the way round
15:20both sides
15:21to hold it.
15:22Flutter, flutter.
15:23mostly finish
15:28the romper.
15:30I'll start
15:31my tail here.
15:32Just a tube.
15:32Like, you're
15:33literally looking
15:33around and there's
15:34all these incredible
15:35costumes coming to life.
15:36knitters,
15:42you have one hour
15:44until this paddling
15:45wall is going
15:46to be full of
15:46toddlers trying
15:47out your outfit.
15:50Oh.
15:52That kind of
15:52ramps up the
15:53pressure nicely.
15:54That's what we want,
15:55you know,
15:55more pressure.
15:56In this final hour,
15:58the knitters
15:58must complete
15:59their three elements
16:00ready for judgment.
16:02Dipti
16:03is working
16:03on her hat.
16:05So, the hat
16:05is going to tie
16:06under the child's
16:07head.
16:10Not long to go
16:11now.
16:12What's going on?
16:13Getting there,
16:14putting some facial
16:14features on.
16:16There's a wee bit
16:16of eye shadow.
16:17Isaac, where are you at?
16:18I'm just making
16:19my compass.
16:20That is adorable.
16:21Oh, my gosh.
16:22OK, Lydia.
16:23Yeah?
16:23Where are you at?
16:24I will attach
16:25a tail here.
16:26Let's have a look
16:26at the tail attachment.
16:28Lovely.
16:29OK, and Holger?
16:30I am attaching
16:31the tail to the
16:32trousers.
16:33You, look at
16:33that tail.
16:40I don't know
16:41whether it will be
16:42enough for the judges.
16:43I've given it
16:44my best shot.
16:45All finished.
16:50Time is up.
16:51Playtime is over.
16:53I'm done, baby.
16:54Yay!
16:55Yay!
16:55I had the opportunity
16:59to see everyone else's
17:00and they are really
17:01fantastic.
17:02The stakes are high
17:03this week.
17:06The stakes will be
17:07even higher when our
17:08seven costumes face
17:10their true test.
17:12Toddlers.
17:12Toddler test passed.
17:39It's judgment time.
17:41It's now time
17:41for Di and Sheila
17:42to get critical
17:44with the crochet.
17:46So first up
17:46we have Holger.
17:54So, Holger,
17:55lots of nice
17:55stitch details,
17:57design details.
17:58You're chiseled.
17:59It is a bit of fluff.
18:00Works incredibly well.
18:02So, three elements,
18:04the head,
18:05the little dungarees.
18:06I love the tail.
18:08You know,
18:08you've thought about
18:08the construction,
18:09the weight of this
18:10fabric and the
18:12crocheted button
18:13is great.
18:14I think it is
18:15a success, yes.
18:18This challenge
18:19wasn't just about
18:21creating a
18:22toddler's outfit.
18:23We were looking
18:23for something
18:25that was original
18:27and special
18:28and that's
18:30what you've done.
18:31So, thank you.
18:31Thank you very much,
18:32Holger.
18:33Next up,
18:34we have Tracy.
18:34Tracy.
18:34Queen Bee.
18:40You have cleverly
18:43used clusters
18:44here to give it
18:45really nice texture
18:47and also breaking up
18:48the fact that they are
18:49essentially yellow
18:50and black stripes.
18:51Buttons.
18:53Slightly sad
18:53these aren't crocheted.
18:55I'm not sure
18:59that the wings
18:59work.
19:01I think they're
19:02a bit too heavy.
19:03Because of the weight
19:04of these,
19:05you needed to compensate.
19:06It's pulled it
19:07right away
19:08from the back.
19:10They don't
19:10quite look like wings.
19:14Next up,
19:15we have Lydia.
19:15Wow.
19:20That is a real
19:22romper suit.
19:23There's some
19:24great embellishments
19:25to this.
19:26These lovely
19:27cufflets.
19:28The echo
19:29on the bottom,
19:30the mane,
19:31the tail.
19:31It does all tie together.
19:33It ties together
19:34really well.
19:35The tail has actually
19:36got quite a nice shape,
19:37hasn't it?
19:39I know it's
19:40a small detail,
19:42but again,
19:44crochet it,
19:44please.
19:45Those are
19:45quite important
19:46details.
19:47Okay.
19:47That you've
19:48made everything
19:48yourself.
19:49Yeah.
19:50Obviously,
19:50a lion's suit
19:51is not super
19:52original.
19:52Yeah.
19:53But I think
19:54it's got your mark
19:55on it,
19:55which I like.
19:56Thank you, Lydia.
19:57Thank you, Lydia.
19:58Next up,
19:59we have Simon.
20:03The helmet
20:04is a good,
20:05solid piece
20:06of construction.
20:07You thought this
20:08through,
20:08didn't you?
20:09I tried.
20:10You planned.
20:11Yeah,
20:11which is unusual
20:12for me.
20:13When it comes
20:14to crochet,
20:14literally everything
20:15I've got
20:15is in that.
20:18So I can see
20:19you've really
20:20tried hard here
20:21and different
20:21crochet stitches.
20:23You're adapting
20:24what you know
20:25you can do
20:26to fit
20:27all the different
20:27requirements.
20:28There is more
20:29that you could have
20:30done,
20:31I'm sure.
20:31I actually really
20:34love this.
20:35Very pleasing
20:36historical object.
20:38And a great success
20:39earlier in the
20:40toddler arena.
20:43Go on,
20:44Di,
20:44give it a swing.
20:45You know you want to.
20:46There you go.
20:48The detail you put
20:49into this
20:50defines this costume.
20:52Engineering like that
20:53really makes me happy.
20:54I think you really
20:55stepped up making this.
20:56next up we have
20:59Ailsa.
21:04She's quite
21:05something,
21:06isn't she?
21:08A lot of fun.
21:09I mean a child's
21:12imagination can run
21:13wild wearing
21:14something like this.
21:16One of the striking
21:17things is how you
21:19manipulated your
21:20crochet stitches
21:21to uneven lines.
21:24You have,
21:25I would guess,
21:26very carefully
21:27worked out
21:28the height
21:29of each
21:30crochet stitch.
21:31Yeah,
21:32that's right.
21:32It's a cracking
21:33pattern.
21:36The detail in the
21:37eyes is
21:38exceptional.
21:40The eye shadow
21:41with this
21:42offset
21:42top section
21:44so you could then
21:45put the eye on top
21:46to raise it out.
21:48The attention of
21:49fine detail
21:50in there
21:51is really,
21:52really amazing.
21:54Love it.
21:56And next up
21:56is Isaac.
22:03I love this
22:04Isaac.
22:05This lovely
22:06textured crochet
22:07stitching
22:08which looks like
22:09a woven fabric
22:10from an explorer's
22:12jacket.
22:13This is really
22:14complicated
22:15crochet in Tarsia
22:17and the countries
22:18are beautifully
22:19shaped.
22:20It's very clear
22:21and it's very good.
22:23Newtpit helmet.
22:25You have
22:26worked a set
22:27of spirals
22:28to your centre.
22:30Very nicely
22:31engineered.
22:32got some really
22:34amazing little
22:35elements.
22:36Compass
22:36which is a lovely
22:38surprise for a
22:39child
22:39but more
22:40exciting for a
22:41child to have
22:42is a pair of
22:43binoculars.
22:44I could see a
22:45child loving
22:46getting into
22:46character.
22:47A small
22:48explorer.
22:49Yeah.
22:50Next up
22:51it's Dixie.
22:52So we've got
22:57a crayon.
23:02Great wee hat.
23:04This is your little
23:05third element.
23:06Yes.
23:06The crayon bag.
23:08Yes.
23:09Which is very
23:09sweet.
23:11Nicely
23:11engineered.
23:12So you have
23:14been exploring
23:16intarsia.
23:17Crochet.
23:18Yes.
23:18Crochet.
23:18Yes.
23:19You've chosen
23:20to outline
23:21the letters.
23:28It's difficult
23:29to see.
23:33I think
23:34when we were
23:35thinking about
23:36making these
23:37letters clearer
23:38I wouldn't
23:39have expected
23:40such
23:41long lengths
23:42of yarn.
23:45So I think
23:46it's
23:47oversized.
23:50It does
23:51gape at the
23:51back.
23:52It gapes at
23:52the back.
23:53I find the
23:54concept
23:55slightly too
23:56simple.
23:57It's not
23:58allowed you
23:59to create
24:00shape and
24:01form
24:02which
24:03I would have
24:05liked to have
24:05seen more of.
24:06Thank you very
24:07much Dipti.
24:08Thanks.
24:08I just threw
24:11whatever I
24:12knew it
24:12which isn't
24:12a lot when
24:13it comes to
24:13crochet.
24:14So yeah
24:16just gave it
24:17what I had.
24:19After looking
24:20at everybody
24:20else's makes
24:21mine is really
24:22really quite
24:23simple.
24:25Maybe I've
24:26reached my peak
24:26I don't know
24:27maybe I'm out of
24:27my depth I don't
24:28know.
24:35It's time for the
24:37team knit and
24:38one final chance
24:39to claim the
24:40prized big knitter
24:41badge and avoid
24:42being cast off.
24:44So for this
24:49week's group
24:50challenge
24:51Di and Sheila
24:52would love for
24:53you to make
24:54a wall
24:56hanging for
24:57a children's
24:58bedroom.
25:00We're looking
25:00for something
25:01really imaginative
25:03think fantastical
25:04beasts
25:04think cosmic
25:05characters
25:05superheroes
25:06whatever you
25:07can dream up.
25:08Now it wouldn't
25:08be game of war
25:09without something
25:10extra interesting
25:11thrown into the
25:11mix because Di
25:12and Sheila
25:13have devised a
25:13little game.
25:14It's a game
25:15we've all played
25:15when we were
25:16younger so
25:17here's one I
25:18made earlier.
25:20First person
25:21will design
25:22the first part
25:23the next person
25:25will then design
25:25the second part
25:26until the final
25:28design is
25:29revealed.
25:30We'd like you
25:32to make it
25:32as imaginative
25:34as you can.
25:36We'll also be
25:37looking for
25:38interactive
25:40and sensory
25:41elements.
25:43And as always
25:44the challenge
25:44is judged
25:45blind so
25:46Di and Sheila
25:46I'm going to
25:47have to ask
25:47you to leave
25:48the armbar.
25:49Good luck.
25:50Now for the
25:51teams in team
25:52one Dipti,
25:54Holger,
25:55Lydia and
25:56Simon.
25:57In team two
25:57Tracy,
25:59Isaac and
26:00Elsa.
26:01You have eight
26:01hours to complete
26:02this challenge
26:03let's get
26:03knitting.
26:04For this team
26:09challenge they'll
26:10need their
26:11imaginations and
26:12stitches to run
26:13wild.
26:14Each knitter is
26:15creating their own
26:16interactive decorative
26:18panel which will
26:19then all be joined
26:20together to form one
26:21wall hanging.
26:23Team one's piece
26:24will be made up of
26:25four panels while
26:26team two's will
26:27have three.
26:28But their first task
26:30is playing the
26:31game.
26:32I really want
26:33to look.
26:38Oh!
26:41This is like
26:42really out there
26:43isn't it?
26:43We're really going
26:44for shapes.
26:45Yeah.
26:45That's really
26:46important for
26:46children to
26:47recognise shapes.
26:48Actually I had a
26:49thought.
26:50Because it's so
26:51varied it might be
26:52worth having the same
26:53background colour so
26:54that it is cohesive
26:56across the whole
26:56design.
26:57Is everyone
26:57cool with that?
27:01The shapes team
27:02have created a
27:03geometric creature
27:04on a cream
27:05stocking stitch
27:06background.
27:08Tracey's striking
27:09triangular face
27:10features intarsia,
27:11applique eyes,
27:13sparkly yarn hair,
27:14beads and buttons
27:15for sensory impact.
27:18Isaac's circular
27:19caterpillar body
27:20mixes waffle and
27:21cable knit with
27:22textured yarns.
27:23Plus,
27:24icord legs that
27:25push and pull.
27:27Ailsa finishes the
27:28design with a
27:29colour block
27:30intarsia skirt,
27:31tieable lace-up
27:32shoes and a
27:33furry friend with
27:34a jingly bell.
27:35The whole wall
27:36hanging is framed
27:37in neat garter
27:38stitch.
27:39Instead of just
27:39jumping straight
27:40in, the other
27:41team are coming
27:42up with a
27:43character before
27:44taking pen to
27:45paper.
27:45What immediately
27:46comes to your
27:47mind for a
27:47character?
27:48Could be under
27:49the sea, like
27:50a sea creature.
27:51A sea creature
27:52will give us more
27:53opportunity to make
27:54it interactive and
27:55fun.
27:55Shall we just
27:57draw?
28:01Go for it.
28:03Start again.
28:05I mean, I like it.
28:07The sea creature
28:11team are building
28:12an ambitious
28:13underwater world,
28:14complete with a
28:15monster rising from
28:16the depths, panel
28:17by panel, packed
28:18with interactive
28:19features.
28:20Above the surface,
28:21Simon's human head
28:22sits on a blue
28:23stocking-stitched
28:23sky, with a
28:24zipped mouth, pom-pom
28:26nose and applique
28:27sunglasses.
28:28Below, Lydia's
28:29torso has bobbly
28:30yarn tentacle
28:31arms and a working
28:32crochet zip-up vest
28:34on sparkly seaweed
28:35yarn.
28:36Dipti's fully
28:37crocheted panel
28:38adds textured
28:39legs and
28:39removable swimming
28:40trunks.
28:41At the seabed,
28:42Holger's intarsier
28:43feet rest on
28:44richly stitched
28:45textures with
28:46tactile pom-pom
28:46toenails.
28:50With the two
28:51creatures dreamt up,
28:52the team's cast on,
28:53but with two very
28:55different approaches.
28:56I like the idea of
28:58doing four distinct
29:00backgrounds.
29:01I think as long as
29:02the background colours
29:03are the same throughout,
29:04it can sort of look
29:05like it's one thing.
29:06Yeah.
29:08When you were growing
29:09up, what was your
29:10favourite game?
29:11This was one of mine.
29:12Really?
29:13Yes.
29:14Create something as
29:15outrageous as we could
29:16get away with,
29:17basically.
29:17Oh, I can only imagine
29:18what went through your
29:19mind, Sheila.
29:20Ah, well.
29:22What kind of designs
29:23are you hoping for in
29:24this challenge?
29:25I'm looking for
29:26something really
29:26creative.
29:28Is there a chance to
29:29communicate fun?
29:31What do you think
29:32could go wrong?
29:33The working out of how
29:35it's all going to hang
29:36together, how they
29:38actually decide to make
29:39all the panels join.
29:41We have asked for
29:42playful and wildly
29:43imaginative, but of
29:45course people could tip
29:46over the edge.
29:50The knitters have
29:51started by creating
29:52their individual panels.
29:53What colour shall I do
29:55the face?
29:56Yellow may be nice.
29:57I'm thinking yellow
29:57would be nice.
29:59Necklace, bubbles for
30:00the hat.
30:01I'm never more happy
30:01than when I'm surrounded
30:02by glitter and things
30:04and stuff.
30:05I'm doing the crazy
30:06belly of our creature.
30:08I'm using a lot of
30:09different textures of
30:10yarn.
30:10I've got sparkle, I've
30:11got fluffy, and then
30:13I'm also doing waffle
30:13stitch.
30:14Knitting doesn't like to
30:16hang vertically, so the
30:17shapes team are knitting
30:18a border to avoid the
30:20entire wall hanging
30:21curling in on itself.
30:22We're doing garter
30:23stitch at the side so
30:24that we have a cohesive
30:25pattern going up the
30:27side of the panel.
30:27This frame not only
30:29gives it a uniform frame
30:30that we don't need to
30:31worry about when we've
30:32completed it, but it
30:33also helps to prevent
30:34the stockinette from
30:36curling as much.
30:37Has anyone ever made a
30:38panel for a wall
30:39before?
30:40I have not.
30:42I've got a big
30:42tapestry crochet in my
30:44kitchen.
30:44Of course.
30:45And how long did it
30:46take you?
30:47Please tell me under
30:48eight hours.
30:53Because I'm quite a
30:54slow knitter, I have
30:56opted to crochet.
30:57It will look different,
30:58but it's supposed to
30:59look different because
31:00everybody's panels are
31:01going to look different
31:02when they get put
31:02together anyway.
31:04Knits and crochet
31:05stitches differ in size
31:06and tension.
31:08Making the panels
31:08match requires careful
31:10swatching, measuring and
31:11adjusting stitch counts.
31:13Thought I'd measured it,
31:14but it's come out too
31:15big.
31:15Can we lay it together?
31:19Quite considerably
31:20smaller.
31:21I'll start again and
31:22I'll reduce it to see
31:24if I can get it to fit
31:25Lydia's better.
31:27I hope this doesn't mean
31:28that I don't finish it.
31:29I really do hope.
31:31But yeah.
31:32OK, team, where are we
31:34at?
31:34God knows.
31:35I'm lagging vastly
31:36behind.
31:37The more varied the
31:39stitches, textures and
31:40yarn weights, the harder
31:41it will be to join the
31:42individual panels and
31:44for it to hang smoothly.
31:47OK, so what is this?
31:49We have a human head.
31:51What is that?
31:52It's like tentacle arms.
31:53Tentacle arms.
31:56Which part are you doing?
31:57So which part is the
31:58red?
32:00Arms.
32:01The arms.
32:01The arms are red,
32:02but the body's purple.
32:04Yeah.
32:04OK.
32:05Why not?
32:06Great.
32:06Why not?
32:07It's playfully imaginative.
32:09And the interactive bits
32:10were going to be stuck on top.
32:12OK.
32:13Lydia's going to do a jacket
32:14for her body.
32:16I'm going to try and do
32:17some trunks.
32:17It's always good to include
32:18as many different things
32:20as possible.
32:21OK.
32:21Is there any part of anyone
32:23that's a little bit worried
32:24and concerned about time?
32:25I mean, absolutely.
32:27It's delirium.
32:28Well, I will leave you
32:29to all of your beastly activities
32:32and I will see you soon.
32:36How's it going, team?
32:39So how did you come up with that?
32:41As soon as we opened it up,
32:42we saw there were circles there
32:44and then we thought shapes.
32:45Shapes just come to mind.
32:47Educational.
32:48Absolutely.
32:48It all kind of matches
32:49and like you say,
32:50you found a common ground.
32:52Like, yeah,
32:52it's supposed to look like
32:53it was done by three different people.
32:54Yeah.
32:54But by having the same background
32:56across all three parts,
32:57when we join them together,
32:58it's a bit more cohesive.
33:00What are some of the interactive ideas
33:02that you've got
33:02as part of your wall hanging?
33:07Has anybody got any interactive?
33:09Yeah.
33:09It's got a bit of glitter
33:11and a bit of fluff here.
33:12Also be adding shoelaces
33:14so that the kids can learn
33:15how to tie shoes.
33:16Yeah.
33:17We decided to keep it simple
33:18just because our design
33:20has a lot of colour
33:21and a lot going on.
33:32She's got a little bit
33:33of a face like a lemon now.
33:34Sour-mouthed.
33:36How are you, Isaac?
33:37How's it going?
33:39It's going.
33:40So on this pink one
33:41that I've done down here,
33:42I've done a waffle stitch
33:43and then I've got this
33:44like really sparkly stuff
33:45over here.
33:46And lots of texture.
33:48That's so lovely, Isaac.
33:50This is so fun.
33:51But while the shapes team
33:52are focused on the sensory,
33:54the sea creature team
33:55are leaning into interactivity.
33:57Now it's just adding
33:58as much interactive nature
33:59as we can.
34:00He'll have a jacket
34:01with a zip.
34:01I am embarking on hair.
34:04We'll have applications
34:05of tools and seaweed
34:06and anything
34:07that's on the seabed.
34:09I'm going to put some
34:09velcro on there,
34:10swimming briefs,
34:11so they're going to be
34:12removable and put-on-able.
34:17Knitters,
34:18you're halfway through
34:18this challenge.
34:19You have four hours remaining.
34:22Well, clearly nobody
34:23wants to play with me.
34:30In the final four hours,
34:32knitters should be finishing
34:33their interactive elements
34:34and joining their panels
34:35to make a creature
34:36that hangs as one.
34:38I'm very glad we went
34:39with the same background
34:40colours to each other.
34:42Although I do look at this
34:43now and think,
34:43oh God, it's so plain,
34:45I don't know if I like it.
34:47The whole team
34:48has been very cohesive
34:49in terms of the background colour
34:50and also created a border
34:52factored into each panel,
34:54so it will sit flat.
34:55My slight concern
34:57is that having like
34:58a plain cream background
34:59doesn't scream imagination
35:01and fun and excitement to me.
35:04This team has spent more time
35:05on the interactiveness of it.
35:07There's the embellishments
35:08and all the little bits
35:09that they haven't necessarily
35:10thought about
35:10how everything links together.
35:14It's looking a bit
35:15of chaos over here.
35:16I've got 25 rows left.
35:19We just haven't got that time.
35:21OK, OK, OK, OK.
35:23The end result is what counts.
35:25We need to get it finished.
35:26It's kids' week
35:34and the knitters
35:35are working in teams
35:36to create interactive
35:37children's wall hangings.
35:39By now,
35:40each team should have
35:41completed their individual panels
35:43and be attaching them together.
35:45I am now casting off my panel
35:47and I'm going to get ready
35:48to put these all together.
35:49Can you hang it under mine, Isaac?
35:52Is it good?
35:53It's matching up, yeah.
35:54But the sea creature team
35:55are drowning.
35:57We're all individually
35:58trying to finish our panels
35:59at the moment.
36:02Knitters,
36:02one hour to go.
36:04Oh, no.
36:05In the final hour,
36:06knitters must complete
36:07their wall hanging
36:08and attach them to dowels
36:10to be hung from the yarn barn roof.
36:11But the sea creature team
36:13haven't even finished their panels,
36:15let alone worked out
36:16how to join them.
36:17It might just be a case
36:18of a quick invisible seam
36:20to join them all together.
36:21We don't know.
36:22How this thing
36:24is going to end up
36:24on the frame,
36:26I don't give a flying
36:27whatever about.
36:28Monkeys.
36:29Monkey, good idea.
36:31How's it going over here?
36:32You're sewing together.
36:34Embellishments are done.
36:35We're sewing together.
36:36I'm doing mattress stitch
36:37so that the seam is invisible
36:38just because I want the stitches
36:39to look as if they're
36:40knitted into each other.
36:41We are calm.
36:42You are very calm.
36:43We are the zen group.
36:43That's true.
36:44I feel like the frantic
36:45is coming from over there.
36:47Good.
36:48I'm going to go check in
36:51on the other team
36:52so I'll see you in a bit.
36:53Bye Tom.
36:54Bye Tom.
36:54Oh okay.
36:55We're doing that now.
36:56Let's start thinking
36:57about getting the pieces together.
36:58Yes, it's not coming along
37:00is it?
37:01When is the plan
37:02to start joining?
37:03I see one panel
37:04is being joined right now.
37:05About 25 minutes ago.
37:06You do know that you have
37:07to have this on the pole right?
37:09Yeah.
37:09And there's not much time left right?
37:11Yep.
37:11Oh yeah.
37:12Yeah.
37:14How do we think
37:15we want to attach this
37:16to the rod?
37:17When I made my wall hanging
37:19I just took one long thread
37:20and went round and round
37:22the dowel.
37:23Whip it.
37:24Whip it.
37:26The whip stitch
37:27wraps around the dowel
37:28and the edge of the fabric
37:29holding both securely in place
37:31but it takes time
37:33to do well.
37:35The Sea Creature team
37:37are now attempting
37:37to sew their panels together
37:39whilst finishing
37:40their interactive elements
37:41at the same time.
37:42I really need my panel
37:44to put my embellishments on.
37:46I've got to put
37:47Simon's on the top.
37:49I need some small sharp scissors.
37:51I need small sharp scissors.
37:52Yeah, possibly.
37:52Here, small scissors.
37:54Here, here, here.
37:54Oh, here.
37:54Got them, got them, got them, got them.
37:56If you can sew one end
37:58while I sew it onto the pole.
38:00So what?
38:01When?
38:03The Sea Creature team
38:05have no option
38:05but to roughly sew
38:07their top panel
38:07to the dowel.
38:08Yeah, roll like this.
38:09Yeah, that's the job
38:10really quickly.
38:11I'm all finished, dude.
38:15Well done, guys.
38:17Well done, Will.
38:18Done it.
38:21How long have we got?
38:22This doesn't match.
38:23That was fast as you can.
38:24Okay, okay.
38:24At this point.
38:25Yep.
38:26My pants are on.
38:27Well, it's better
38:28than your pants are off,
38:29so...
38:29Knitters, finish your rows,
38:33needles down, time is up.
38:35Who's earned their pudding
38:36and who is having an extra serving
38:38and who is having an extra serving
38:38of sprouts?
38:40I love sprouts.
38:43No matter whether we win or lose,
38:45I'm really proud of this.
38:47Ta-da!
38:48Oh, dear.
38:50Oh, dear.
38:50Eight hours
38:52and approximately 36,000 stitches later,
38:56the teams have pulled off
38:57two intricate, interactive wall hangings
38:59worthy of a child's bedroom.
39:01Well done, knitters.
39:05That is two interactive wall hangings complete.
39:08Come on in, judges.
39:13Oh, my goodness.
39:14Look at this.
39:22Shall we look at this one first?
39:23Yes.
39:24Yeah.
39:26On the top panel,
39:27Simon's created a head
39:28with a zip-up mouth
39:30and applique sunglasses.
39:31Lydia created tentacle arms
39:34and a zip vest.
39:36Dipti, a crochet panel
39:37with Velcro trunks.
39:39Holger's contribution,
39:41intarsie her feet
39:42with pom-pom toenails.
39:44Well, there's a lot
39:45to unpick here.
39:47There is a lot.
39:48Lots of different texture,
39:50stitches,
39:51lots of different colour,
39:52obviously.
39:53Super bit of textured knitting
39:55at the bottom there.
39:56Yeah, very nice.
39:58Pants.
40:00Oh.
40:01Obviously, we have a different edge
40:04here because it's
40:06a crochet panel.
40:08It has come in narrower.
40:10We have this bulge,
40:12slight bulge.
40:13Yeah.
40:14Yeah.
40:14Don't we?
40:16A zip!
40:17Putting zips into knitwear
40:19can be really challenging.
40:20What you always want
40:22is for it to sit flat
40:23and that's what this is doing.
40:24It's sitting beautifully.
40:26And then we get to another zip.
40:30But...
40:31Looks like he's talking.
40:35I do like the idea
40:42of the garter stitch edge.
40:43I like that very much, yes.
40:46Although,
40:48it sort of stops here.
40:51So,
40:52they don't match.
40:55It looks like it's been sewn on.
40:57It's very visible.
40:59You've got this
41:00slightly uneven effect.
41:04Here,
41:04we've got the join
41:05between the panels.
41:08I mean...
41:08It's not brilliant.
41:10Do you know,
41:10that's one of the things
41:12about...
41:13Planning ahead.
41:14...thinking about how you're finishing
41:15when you start.
41:17Yeah.
41:18And then what do you think
41:19of the second one?
41:20Tracey has made
41:24an intarsier face
41:25with sparkly details.
41:28Isaac,
41:29a textured caterpillar
41:30with movable legs.
41:32And Ailsa's contribution,
41:34a skirt with tie-up shoes
41:36and a furry friend.
41:38It does actually make me smile
41:40the way it follows through
41:42with all the different colours.
41:43This is a much neater
41:44overall concept.
41:47They've all gone
41:47for the same background colour.
41:49Yes.
41:50And created
41:51a very uniform
41:53wall hanging.
41:55Their garter stitch
41:56at the edges.
41:57There's no tension problems.
41:59I mean,
42:00I think that's really
42:01beautifully executed.
42:04I'm really enchanted
42:05by the face.
42:06It's just
42:07a fantastic character.
42:09I just love this.
42:12These panels are lovely.
42:14Feels.
42:15All the different textures.
42:16The legs move.
42:18OK.
42:18Look, this is cool.
42:20I like that.
42:21And finally we get
42:22to this section.
42:23I'm practising
42:25my shoelace tying.
42:26Yeah.
42:26And it worked.
42:30There's not as much
42:32interactive things happening.
42:35There aren't really
42:37any little pouches
42:39surprises or surprises.
42:41So, Diane, Sheila,
42:45have you come to a decision?
42:48This week's winning
42:49wall hanging
42:50is...
42:52..this one.
42:57APPLAUSE
42:57Which team
43:01worked on this one?
43:02I loved it.
43:04I could see
43:05a children's book
43:07opening with this character
43:08running all the way
43:10through it.
43:10Well, a huge
43:11constitulations
43:12to Isaac,
43:13Ailsa
43:13and Tracy.
43:19It's now up to
43:21Di and Sheila
43:21to decide
43:22who will be cast off
43:23based on their performances
43:24across both challenges.
43:26What a week.
43:29It's kids' week, huh?
43:30Who in particular
43:31has impressed you this week?
43:33Isaac has impressed me.
43:36Talking about progression
43:37from week one
43:39when he made the
43:39rather
43:41not great
43:42in Tarsia
43:43to this week
43:45when we saw
43:46planet Earth
43:47beautifully defined.
43:48I loved the texture
43:50of his Explorer jacket.
43:52I just thought
43:52that was
43:53one of the best things
43:55I've seen.
43:56Very special.
43:57And he also came up
43:58with the cohesive element
44:00from the group challenge.
44:02Absolutely.
44:02Yes, he's got
44:03a really clear vision.
44:04I feel he's really
44:05stepped up this week.
44:07Ailsa.
44:10She has
44:11really interesting
44:12quirky ideas.
44:14She's
44:14bubbling
44:15with imagination.
44:18Who's at risk
44:19at being cast off
44:20this week?
44:21Dipty's in danger.
44:24She tried
44:25new techniques
44:26but it didn't quite work.
44:28She was in the losing panel.
44:30It was too confusing,
44:31too many
44:32disparate elements.
44:35Simon,
44:36we're coming to
44:38a crunch point
44:39and speaking about
44:41the variety of stitches,
44:42I think he has used
44:43every crochet stitch
44:44that he knows.
44:45We're at that point
44:46in the competition now.
44:47Simon is
44:49not the strongest
44:50at this level.
44:51Is a mace
44:52enough
44:52to take him through?
44:54I just don't know.
44:58What a week it's been.
44:59It's time to find out
45:00who's knit big
45:01and whose time it is
45:02to sit on the naughty step.
45:04So,
45:04the big knitter
45:05this week
45:07is Isaac.
45:14Well done.
45:15Well done.
45:16Well done.
45:16If you can all join me
45:17in giving a big
45:18bang
45:19to Isaac.
45:22Congratulations.
45:26And as always,
45:28this part gets tougher
45:29and tougher
45:29as the weeks go by.
45:31The person
45:32being cast off
45:34is
45:35dip tea.
45:41I knew.
45:42Aw.
45:43You've been so fantastic.
45:45Aw.
45:47I'm going to get
45:47a bit tearful
45:48because I'm sad
45:49to be leaving.
45:50I've made such
45:51a good group
45:52of friends
45:52but I was starting
45:54to feel out
45:55of my depth
45:55to be absolutely
45:56honest with you.
45:58I'm absolutely
45:58gassed
45:59to have this
46:00sheet badge.
46:01Group hug.
46:02You're in the middle.
46:03Don't love her.
46:04I'll be in the middle
46:05and do a little bit.
46:06Do a drill.
46:09Do a drill.
46:09Do a drill.
46:10Do a drill.
46:11You'll make me cry.
46:14Next time,
46:15knitted food
46:16good enough to eat.
46:17I'm making
46:18Sunday roast.
46:19It's my favourite
46:20dinner.
46:21And the ultimate
46:22textured cardigan.
46:23There you go.
46:23Beautiful.
46:24Hold on.
46:25Hold on.
46:25Hold on.
46:26Something has
46:27gone wrong,
46:28I think.
46:28Keep going.
46:29Who knows.
46:48Ha ha ha ha.
46:49Ha ha.
46:50Ha ha ha.
46:50Ha ha ha.
46:51Ha ha.
46:53Yeah.
46:53Whoa.
46:54Ha ha ha.
46:55Oh.
