00:00A new generation of knitters are taking the world by storm.
00:04And ten of the nation's most talented have joined me here in Scotland to battle it out
00:09for the ultimate crown.
00:11Each week they will face two mind-blowing challenges right here in our magical yarn
00:16barn.
00:21Previously, the knitters tackled their first solo challenge to reinvent a Fair Isle tank top.
00:31I've never done Fair Isle before.
00:32I'm in big trouble.
00:34Dear God.
00:35And then turned their needles to our team challenge to knit a sofa.
00:39I don't want to say that I've bit enough more than I can chew.
00:42Ailsa's knits shone through.
00:44It's just so beautiful.
00:46Dipti came close to being cast off.
00:49Oh!
00:51But it was Gordon who was the first knitter to depart the yarn barn.
00:56Now, it's week two and our nine remaining knitters have a lot to live up to because it's icons
01:03week.
01:04Welcome to Game of War, Britain's best knitter.
01:16Hello knitters and welcome back.
01:18Now, this week is icons week.
01:20And for your solo knit, Di and Sheila would love for you to make an iconic doggy outfit.
01:29We would like you to use both knit and crochet to make a two-piece outfit.
01:33It has to be practical because if it doesn't fit the dog, then it's no use.
01:42We would like it to be something that's iconic to you and it can be a person, a place, and
01:48we want you to use that as your theme to make this incredible doggy apparel.
01:54You have 12 hours to complete this challenge.
01:58Your time starts now.
02:00Let's get knitting and crocheting.
02:06Our knitters may be used to making beautiful garments, but working with animals demands a unique approach.
02:13I have never made a garment for an animal.
02:17With measurements taken from two Italian greyhounds, Dana and Dobby, the knitters must balance aesthetics and
02:24practicality to design for a tricky body shape.
02:26I haven't got a real-life dog in my life, so I've kind of made myself a little friend to help.
02:31I'm used to making things to measure, so when I need to make something for a dog, I need to have something to work from.
02:37The knitters must create a custom design based on something iconic to them.
02:42It's inspired by David Bowen.
02:44Freddie Mercury.
02:45What could be more iconic than?
02:46A unicorn.
02:47Each knitter will create an individual design, but there are key elements they must include.
02:56All designs must incorporate both knitting and crochet.
03:00Knitting uses two needles to build rows of stitches, while crochet uses a hook to create one stitch at a time.
03:09First, knitters must create the body of the garment, choosing stitches that ensure both comfort and functionality.
03:16And a good fit around the legs, neck and rump.
03:20Knitters can then add embellishments to bring each iconic look to life.
03:25Lastly, knitters must create headgear that combines comfort, security and style in a piece that stays put.
03:33Normally, a design like this might take around 30 hours, but in the yarn barn, they have just 12.
03:42Doggy outfits.
03:43What makes it such a difficult thing to make?
03:45Small pieces can be more complex to knit.
03:49They really have to get shaping right.
03:51Especially a headpiece, because one stitch can be the difference between it fitting or falling off.
03:56Tricky business.
03:57It is.
03:58Yeah.
04:00For music-loving Meadow, there was only one icon she was ever going to choose.
04:06Freddie Mercury.
04:07I'm recreating his iconic yellow jacket that he wore on the kind of magic tour.
04:13Meadow will be knitting a yellow jacket embellished underneath with buckles and sixpence button fastenings to bring her favourite frontman to life.
04:22And for the headgear, she has chosen to crochet a tiny bejeweled crown.
04:26Hello, Meadow.
04:27Hello.
04:28Hello, Meadow.
04:29Hello.
04:30Obviously, you're doing something that is important to you.
04:33Queen's been my favourite band for years now.
04:36Me and my dad, we went to see them perform in Belfast.
04:39What do you think your family are going to think of you being here?
04:41Erm, I think they're all still a wee bit surprised.
04:45It's quite a big thing for me.
04:48I'm still in my eye levels.
04:50Wow.
04:51Still.
04:52Could you have ever imagined that you'd actually be here doing something like this on a TV show?
04:55Never.
04:56A competition?
04:57No.
04:58Knitting is very, very important to me.
05:01I want to be a fashion designer and without it, I don't know what else I would do.
05:06I've pushed myself so far to get to this point and I really want to win to just prove to myself that I can do it and I have what it takes.
05:17After last week's ill-fitting tank top, library worker Dipti is hoping to bring a little bit of magic to her iconic doggy outfit.
05:25It's going to be sparkly. It's going to be unicorny.
05:30Dipti will be crocheting a unicorn horn for her headgear, complete with an extravagant mane.
05:35She's chosen a mix of sparkly yarn to make her dog coat, which she'll be knitting together in all the colours of the Raylo.
05:44Anyone who's crocheted with this kind of fancy yarn will know that it's impossible to see the stitches in it.
05:49So it is far easier to knit with it than it is to crochet.
05:54I am a massive fan of crochet. I'm not that great at knitting.
05:58Does this look okay or does this look terrible?
06:03Charity Partnerships director Lydia is also kicking off the challenge with her knitting needles.
06:08Lydia.
06:09Tom, hello.
06:10Which icon are we going for?
06:12Loosely inspired by the Notting Hill Carnival.
06:14Drawing inspiration from the iconic Notting Hill Carnival, Lydia's sparkly doggy outfit will include a striking crown of knitted feathers and a coat using a feather and fan lace stitch.
06:28People at home who don't necessarily know what lace knitting is, can you give us a little rundown?
06:34It's using the holes to create shape and patterns so it should have a wavy look.
06:40I love that. Do you have a dog? No.
06:43No.
06:44Would never have a dog.
06:46People of Britain.
06:48Don't hate me, but no, I'm not a dog person.
06:51Last week, student Isaac didn't manage to finish either challenge, so this week he's determined to stay on track.
07:03You're all right. You're doing great.
07:05It just needs to get on the dog.
07:10My design is based on the mascot of Philadelphia's ice hockey team.
07:16I went to university out there and it is just like a huge, huge part of my life.
07:21Isaac plans to knit his doggy coat into an ice hockey jersey with a name and even an ice rink embroidered onto the back.
07:29His headgear helmet will be crocheted using the loop stitch to bring the iconic Philadelphia Flyers ice hockey mascot, Gritty, to life.
07:37So I'm currently knitting the body. This is the front part and then obviously I've got my arm holes here.
07:42I am slightly concerned that it's maybe an obscure icon. I'm not sure if Ty and Sheila are up to date on their American hockey.
07:51Notice this little dog here?
07:54Yeah, right? It's wolfy.
07:56It's much smaller than August.
07:57It is, but it's not the size of the dog in a fight, it's the size of the fight in a dog, right?
08:01Simon is just housewife's catnip, isn't he?
08:04A few hours into the challenge, knitters should be starting to consider how to shape their dog coats to the body.
08:15So far, so crafts.
08:17Simon, what are you up to?
08:18My inspiration comes from buildings, big Gothic, cathedrals.
08:23Going for lots of texture, moss stitch, just to try and really bring over that kind of stonework.
08:30Simon's outfit is inspired by iconic Gothic architecture, such as Canterbury Cathedral.
08:36For the headpiece, he will be crocheting a tiny bell hat.
08:39And for the body, he will be using moss stitch to create a stonework effect, including a Gothic arch.
08:46To embellish his coat, he will be crocheting a stained glass window in the shape of a paw print.
08:52Now that's what I call architecture.
08:55That's really interesting because moss is one of the most difficult stitches.
09:01To do well.
09:03Right.
09:04You're going to get a good tension.
09:05I think you've got a very good tension on that.
09:08It really does look like stonework.
09:11In this piece here, I'm going to inset some crochet stained glass.
09:14Ah, stained glass.
09:16I'm not a crocheter, but the stained glass is more of a free-handed thing.
09:20So I'm going to make it up on the fly.
09:24You're taking a wee bit of a risk there.
09:26Yeah, a little bit of a risk.
09:27I'm trying to leave myself plenty of time.
09:35Stephanie, what's your plan for your doggy outfit?
09:38It's going to be a Chelsea Pensioner.
09:40A Chelsea Pensioner!
09:41Yes!
09:43Stephanie has been inspired by the iconic retired British Army veterans, the Chelsea Pensioners.
09:49She will be recreating their classic red and black uniform, doggy style.
09:55She plans to use fancy stitch to create a firm fabric for the coat, and to top it all off, a crochet black tri-corn hat.
10:03Chelsea Pensioners are pretty well-renowned for having the uniform that fits like a glove.
10:09I'm knitting with two strands because it's really thick.
10:13So with two strands, will it feel slightly stiffer when it's on?
10:15Yes.
10:16It's going to give it that tension to make it feel like a coat rather than a floppy jumper.
10:21Yes, and that's what I wanted.
10:22Great.
10:24Also creating a thicker doggy coat, but using crochet instead of knit, it's psychotherapist Tracy.
10:30It's Ziggy Stardust.
10:32Oh.
10:33David Bowie.
10:34When I thought of icons, he was the first one I thought of.
10:37Inspired by the legend that is David Bowie, Tracy's dog coat will spell out her favourite star man's name in mosaic crochet.
10:46Mosaic crochet creates a thicker fabric because it layers stitches on top of each other.
10:51But the real showstopper will be her recreation of the iconic spiky hairstyle.
10:56Oh, you pretty thing.
11:00Oh, wow.
11:01The main panel will be a rectangle and then you're going to add all the…
11:04And I'm going to shape with knitting and with crochet, yeah.
11:08With crochet.
11:09Mm-hmm.
11:11Okay.
11:15To ensure a successful fit, knitters can use shaping to contour the body or even sleeves for a snug fit to the legs.
11:23And Holger has got some grand plans for how to combine beauty and practicality within his design.
11:30Holger, what is your doggy outfit?
11:32It's to do with performance art based on the Italian commedia dell'arte.
11:42Okay.
11:43It's very high flying, highfalutin for a dog outfit.
11:46Oh, wow.
11:50Holger has been inspired by 18th century Italian theatre.
11:54Corsias.
11:55To emulate the flamboyant comic characters, he plans to knit a stripy pink and white coat complete with exaggerated balloon sleeves.
12:03His balaclava style headgear is shaped around the ear holes and topped off with a miniature crochet crown.
12:10Bellissimo.
12:12We're working on creating some exaggerated shapes, especially around your sleeve.
12:17We're getting there.
12:18Okay.
12:19Eventually, slowly, slowly.
12:26So far, I've got the neck for the dog.
12:29I've split off for the two legs.
12:32I've done the back piece and now I'm working along the back.
12:36Ailsa has been inspired by a Glaswegian icon.
12:38In the city I come from, Glasgow, there's a statue that's famous because it's always got a traffic cone on its head.
12:45And this statue is said to have inspired some of the world's greatest street artists.
12:50For her iconic outfit, Ailsa will knit a grey jumper incorporating intarsia to spell out the dog's name in graffiti style lettering.
13:00Then, inspired by the famous Duke of Wellington statue, she will crochet her dog a tiny traffic cone hat.
13:07I hope the judges see where I've gone with it.
13:12I'm kind of concerned that they might see it a bit silly, a dog with a cone on his head.
13:17Knitters, you are halfway through this challenge.
13:25You've got six hours left.
13:26At this point in the challenge, knitters should be finishing off the body of their doggy coats
13:33and starting to move on to the finishing details.
13:36Hi, Meadow. Hi.
13:40Let's see what you're doing.
13:42I've got the body done and now I'm working on the sleeves.
13:45So you do use a twisted stitch. Is there a reason for that?
13:53It's just the way I've knit.
13:56OK.
13:57It's quite interesting because twisting the stitch means you use less yarn.
14:03It goes tighter.
14:04So this is where we can see clearly that you're doing one row untwisted and one row twisted.
14:10A twisted knit stitch is when the needle is inadvertently inserted into the back of the loop instead of the front,
14:17tightening and creating a twist in the stitch.
14:20It's a common mistake made by new knitters.
14:23OK.
14:26I am behind on time.
14:33Just a little bit apprehensive.
14:35Just a bit.
14:36Just a tad, yes.
14:38It's a little bit tight now.
14:46The knitters have only a few hours left of their solo challenge to create iconic two-piece doggy outfits.
14:53Well, the sleeves are sleeving. Not as speedy as I like, but hey, what's new?
14:58While some have moved on to giving their coats their iconic look.
15:02I'm starting to brush down the fibres so that it has a bit of a spray paint effect and sort of look like graffiti.
15:11I am behind.
15:12I am behind.
15:13First time crocheter Simon is having to simplify his stained glass panel into one basic shape rather than the colourful paw print.
15:20I am just going to make up something around it to make it look like a wider stained glass.
15:24I am not a crocheter. The stained glass is effectively winging it.
15:29By now, knitters should be moving on to the headgear.
15:38Di and Sheila are expecting careful planning around the shape of the head and the ear holes to make sure those doggy hats stay on those doggy heads.
15:47For the hat, I am basically recreating my mascot's head so it is completely fluffy.
15:51I am probably going to tie it underneath the neck just to make sure that it can get over his head.
15:56It is a kind of a balaclava. There is obviously a fairly big space for the ears to poke through.
16:02I am going to do the mane for hat in what I call unicorn fur.
16:09David Bowie's wig.
16:13And we are going to knit the tri-corners round and then fold them up.
16:17In my head, it works, but whether it actually works on the dog, I don't know.
16:23Yeah.
16:24There would be some gold parts going along across to make it a little big crown.
16:28So Di and Sheila earlier, they told me about how the twisted stitch actually changes the inside as well.
16:37So that was something new because I am still learning.
16:40I still have a lot to learn with my knitting and I will hopefully do more in the next few years at university and stuff.
16:47And then to go on to being a designer, that is the end goal.
16:53Knitters and hookers.
16:5530 minutes.
16:58Oh!
17:00How many?
17:0130 minutes!
17:02No!
17:03You've got to get those on, sew that up.
17:07I am in the process of making my little feathers for the headpiece.
17:10At carnival, you make things very last minute.
17:16I've still got one more scene to do, but I decided I would sew it up.
17:20Holger.
17:22So this is the jumper.
17:23This is the pussy.
17:24This is the jumper.
17:26Love it.
17:28And Dipti, where are you at?
17:30Hello.
17:31Coat's finished.
17:32Unicorn is nearly done.
17:33Looks great.
17:38What am I going to do with that?
17:40I'm kind of wanting more colours in it like that, but...
17:43So that's me.
17:48Knitters and hookers, that is your time up.
17:53Time to put those outfits on those little doggies.
17:59That's nine doggy two pieces in just 12 hours.
18:03I did literally as much as I could right out of the wire.
18:07It was a little bit panicky at the end, but I think I did all right.
18:13Well done, knitters.
18:15Now it's time for Di and Sheila to decide who's made a dog's dinner
18:19and whose outfit is the dog's ball.
18:22Actually, I don't think we can say that.
18:24We probably shouldn't say that.
18:25I don't think you should, Tom.
18:26Anyway, release the hounds.
18:28First up, Dipti.
18:29Our designs today are modelled by doggy superstars Dobby and Dana,
18:34who love long walks, treats and playing dress up.
18:40Yes.
18:42Oh my gosh.
18:44Aww.
18:46I love them.
18:47She's so beautiful.
19:01They're tears of joy.
19:02She looks absolutely beautiful.
19:05I've got to really congratulate you on your knitting here.
19:11Because I know that that was not your strongest point.
19:13No.
19:14We've got the lovely mane here and then we've got the head piece.
19:17The horn is even bigger and better and glitzier than we had been expecting.
19:22Thank you very much Dipti.
19:24Lydia.
19:25The glitter.
19:26The glitter.
19:27The glitter.
19:28The colours work incredibly well.
19:41Very much like the feather and fan lace pattern.
19:45Because it does really allow the dog to move.
19:49All the stitches that you used were entirely appropriate.
19:52I think you've embodied Bowie in that head.
20:10Well done.
20:13It's beautifully executed.
20:15The crochet.
20:17Lovely, fabulous crochet.
20:18My reservation is in the stiffness of the coat.
20:24It doesn't show her beautiful form and shape.
20:27She's ended up with bare shoulders and a bare chest.
20:32Elsa.
20:35Aww.
20:36Aww.
20:44The lettering is fab.
20:46I haven't really seen that done before and I really love it.
20:50The shadowing effect really, really works.
20:54It's fab.
20:57Well done Elsa.
20:59And Isaac, you're up next.
21:01Such a good boy.
21:02Aww.
21:03I love this crocheted loop stitch.
21:16So the hat is fun, but in terms of working for the dog,
21:20I'm not sure that the headpiece works.
21:24One good shake and the headpiece goes.
21:29Simon.
21:33Aww.
21:34What?
21:35So your idea was this was a stained glass...
21:48Yeah.
21:49...motif.
21:50Yeah.
21:52I only realised when I was making it how big it had got
21:56and I was just like, gah, I can't really fit anything else in there.
22:00I would have liked to see more different colours there.
22:03Good.
22:05I loved the gothic arch that you made.
22:08The moss stitch works incredibly well,
22:10but it's been slightly swallowed up by the stained glass.
22:13Yeah.
22:15Meadow.
22:20Oh, thank you.
22:27I'm concerned about the fit.
22:29I think it looks too stretched.
22:30This should not be as tightly pulled over the back.
22:35Yeah.
22:37We do love the crown.
22:38We absolutely do.
22:39And the construction's really excellent.
22:42You've shown some really lovely crochet skills there.
22:45But it's not the most secure.
22:47It doesn't quite fit the practical part of the brief.
22:51Holger.
22:52No.
22:53Go on.
22:54Be fabulous for me.
22:55I love it.
22:56I have to say, um, incredibly well done.
22:58Um, I just do think it's beautiful.
22:59It's beautifully made.
23:01And I always cry when I see something beautiful.
23:05Oh, God.
23:06I really appreciate the skill in it.
23:08And I always cry when I see something beautiful.
23:10Oh, God.
23:11You have achieved a headpiece that stays on.
23:12Congratulations.
23:13The execution of what you've done is pretty flippant.
23:14You have achieved a headpiece that stays on.
23:15Congratulations.
23:16The execution of what you've done is pretty flippant.
23:17You have achieved a headpiece that stays on.
23:18Congratulations.
23:23And I always cry when I see something beautiful.
23:26Oh, God.
23:29I really appreciate the skill in it.
23:34You have achieved a headpiece that stays on.
23:38Congratulations.
23:39The execution of what you've done is pretty flawless.
23:44Stephanie.
23:51Oh, look at that.
23:54Look at it.
23:55Oh, that's beautiful.
24:05What I love about the design is the back.
24:08You've got this great pattern running all the way down,
24:11which gives it a tailored look.
24:15I'm less excited about the join here.
24:19It's not been sewn up quite so well.
24:24This is a bit messier than the rest.
24:27The hat, I mean, it's incredibly cute.
24:30Yeah.
24:31But it's not been engineered,
24:32which is what we were really looking for.
24:36Thank you very much, Stephanie.
24:39Knitters, huge congratulations on all of those amazing outfits.
24:46APPLAUSE
24:52The judges had said about my increases being a wee bit random and stuff.
24:56I was sort of winging it a bit as I went along.
24:59I didn't really mean to make Di cry.
25:04I know it was happy tears, but it always makes me feel emotional as well.
25:10Back in the yarn barn, it's time for our team knit and one final chance to impress our judges before the cast off.
25:26For this week's group challenge, you are going to be split into three teams of three to create an iconic 80s jumper.
25:38Oh, wow.
25:39So the 80s is famous for graphic, really iconic, inventive designs.
25:48You can see we're wearing designs I made in the 80s.
25:52So we will be giving you a vintage 80s pattern for a women's jumper.
25:59And we'll be asking you to make it in mohair.
26:05Just like my leg warmers.
26:06Very 80s.
26:08Totally 80s.
26:09We will be expecting to see 80s style motifs and patterns.
26:16We will also be looking for intarsia knitting.
26:22And as always, the group challenge is judged blind.
26:25So I'm going to ask Di and Sheila to leave the yarn barn.
26:29We're going to be splitting you up into three teams of three.
26:31So in team one, Simon, Dipti and Isaac.
26:35In team two, Holger, Tracy and Lydia.
26:40And in team three, Elsa, Meadow and Stephanie.
26:45You have 10 hours.
26:46Your time starts now.
26:48Let's get knitting.
26:53OK, are we ready for this?
26:55Yes.
26:56I'm so excited!
26:59To transport them back to the 80s,
27:01we've given the teams an original vintage jumper pattern
27:04that they can adapt.
27:06Should we do a shape first?
27:07Or would it be a loose crop?
27:10Yeah, OK.
27:11To create their bold 80s motifs,
27:13knitters must use intarsia,
27:15a technique used to create distinct blocks of colour.
27:19I like the idea of doing something really big on the front.
27:22Maybe the music or so.
27:24Music!
27:25I like that idea.
27:28They will be using mohair wool only,
27:30a famously fuzzy and fluffy yarn,
27:33which brings its own challenges.
27:36What are some of the things that could go wrong with using mohair?
27:40With all these extra fibres,
27:42it does mean that their intarsia skills really need to be up there.
27:46Yeah.
27:47How are the teams going to work together to construct this piece?
27:50Sheila and I do it all the time.
27:51If we've got to get something to a film or a catwalk or whatever,
27:55we split it up front, back, and one person to both sleeves.
28:00But you have to work together to make it cohesive.
28:03Well, that's a challenge, especially in ten hours.
28:08First, each team must agree on a unified design for their garments.
28:12You know what I think is super 80s is this whole kind of like scar,
28:17black and white, checkerboard look.
28:19Do you know what I mean?
28:20OK, and then we can put silver or something down that.
28:23All right.
28:25Yeah, no, it's just, I think the whole black and white against the colour
28:30is quite strong.
28:32We could put ribbons and embellishments.
28:33I've got lots of embellishments.
28:35Yeah, yeah, hold on, Tracy, hold on, hold on.
28:36These 80s jumpers were full of embellishments.
28:37We need to have embellishments on this.
28:39OK, let's make sure we can get the body done, make it look good,
28:43and go from there.
28:44Yeah.
28:46After much debate, the team has chosen Holger's checkerboard design.
28:51Sticking with the vintage shape, they'll use Intarsia
28:54to knit a black and white diagonal checkerboard motif
28:57over pastel pinks and purples.
28:59Tracy and Lydia will handle the body, while Holger knits the sleeves.
29:03OK, so the principle design, I think we're good.
29:06And then decide if we're going to embellish it, we might have some time.
29:08Yeah, plus this is heavy too.
29:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:10Yeah.
29:12Over on the other team.
29:14What if we put balloons on it?
29:16Yeah, yeah.
29:17Then we can mimic that on the sleeves and have like a balloon sleeve as well.
29:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's a good idea.
29:23So balloons on the balloon sleeve.
29:25Yeah, we could have it.
29:26Or the balloon strings could be the balloon strings!
29:29Oh!
29:30Yes!
29:31That's such a good idea.
29:33Their cropped jumper has one long balloon sleeve and one short,
29:37and an Intarsia balloon design on the front, complete with balloon strings.
29:41Isaac will knit the front of the jumper, Dipti will tackle the back,
29:45while Simon will take on the balloon sleeves.
29:48There may not be 99 of them, but Intarsia balloons will be a challenge.
29:52If we do one balloon, we can incorporate colour into it,
29:54so it could be like a zig-zag balloon or something like that.
29:56OK, try not to make it too concrete.
29:58I was just thinking of maybe a simple balloon.
30:00OK.
30:01Just in case there's someone who's not great at Intarsia.
30:03That's fair, that's fair.
30:05Over on the more musically-minded team, Meadow is running up that hill.
30:11I like it.
30:13I mean, I kind of want to do the front.
30:15I'm happy for you to do the front.
30:17The team have chosen to capture the spirit of 80s music,
30:21with the guitar motif on the front and belt buckle design along the hem,
30:26and sheet music on the back.
30:28Stephanie will be doing the sleeves, Elsa will be on the back,
30:31while Meadow will be working on the front lead guitar.
30:35I thought the guitar would be a really nice piece for me to take on.
30:38I'm not too experienced in Intarsia,
30:40but I'm quite excited to take on this big piece
30:43and really push myself and see if I can do it,
30:45because I think I can.
30:52About to start the Intarsia.
30:54It's the start of what's going to be a balloon.
30:57Intarsia is made up of blocks of colour,
31:00which, for the checkerboard team, should work well.
31:03The checkerboard pattern is in Intarsia.
31:05Yeah.
31:07It's in Intarsia that's a little bit easier to knit.
31:09Yeah.
31:11For the guitar and balloon teams who need to create curved shapes,
31:14this means carefully plotting their design,
31:17shifting colour blocks gradually to simulate the curve.
31:20Think of it like building a curve out of Lego bricks.
31:23Without precise planning, the curve could end up looking distorted.
31:26I've never done this technique before,
31:29and it's really hard to see the stitches in mohair.
31:31There.
31:33See that?
31:34No, I didn't see that.
31:35This is horrendous.
31:36It's literally like knitting with hair.
31:37This is going to be a challenge.
31:39Just count them as you purled it, do you?
31:41Yeah, okay. Good work, thank you.
31:43I'll count them as I purled.
31:44Save some time.
31:46Oh, I need to find out a bit more about this one.
31:51How's it going?
31:52That's quite the design.
31:54Are you planning on putting any embellishments on this jumper?
31:57Yes.
31:59To be determined.
32:01Is that a time situation?
32:02Oh, that's a time situation.
32:03It's a personality situation, Tom.
32:05Oh.
32:06We've just got to manage things carefully, okay?
32:07Are you less is more?
32:08Yep.
32:09And you're more and small.
32:10I'm more is more.
32:11There's a bit of a clash of opinions.
32:12If he goes to the loo last minute, I'll lock him in and then just jazz it up.
32:15Oh.
32:17Well, we'll see.
32:18Well, good luck and I hope you finish it.
32:20Yeah.
32:23Is there room for a little one in there?
32:25I do want to just show this because with intarsia and colour work,
32:29that is what's going to get turned into a jumper.
32:31So you can see where she's at and how much further she has to go.
32:36It's my first time doing intarsia.
32:38First time doing intarsia.
32:39Okay.
32:40You know, it's quite intricate to get like a good clean line when it comes to mohair.
32:45Yeah.
32:46How are you making sure that that sits well?
32:48Not really sure.
32:49I think it's okay.
32:50Yeah.
32:52Okay.
32:53Well, I wish you the best of luck.
33:00I don't think I did it properly.
33:06You want me to count them?
33:07Yeah.
33:08All right.
33:09Fourth one in.
33:10You've missed one.
33:12I just can't keep.
33:16Knitters.
33:18Time call.
33:20You have five hours remaining.
33:23Well, how is he?
33:24I repeat, five hours remaining.
33:27You're halfway through this challenge.
33:30With only five hours left, the sleeves are taking longer than expected for Stephanie.
33:36We need more time.
33:37So the team have come up with a design change.
33:39In the interest of time, we've decided to make a bit of a change to the shape, taking away a sleeve completely.
33:46Their new off-the-shoulder jumper means Elsa and Meadow will knit their panels up to the left shoulder and seam together.
33:54So rather than having a second sleeve, we'll have it cutting off under the arm.
34:00Also on the highway to the danger zone is Holger.
34:04My worries is the timing.
34:06If worse comes to worse, we sack off the second sleeve and then put like a big bow on the shoulder instead.
34:12I think it's a great idea. It's kind of more in line with what I wanted, something a little bit more out there.
34:20Somewhere it was always on the cards.
34:22I think we've found the balance. Wonderful.
34:25Hooray.
34:27And I might get a sequin and you never know.
34:36At this stage in the challenge, teams should be finishing their individual panels.
34:40But the guitar team have noticed a problem.
34:47Oh, no.
34:50I just had to panic.
34:52I'm having the panic as well.
34:54About where the decreases are?
34:55Yes.
34:57Yeah, you've decreased on the wrong sides.
35:03Elsa has knitted her panel to cover the right shoulder.
35:06And Meadow has knitted her panel to cover the left so they won't join together.
35:12I don't know if did we manage that.
35:13I don't know if did we manage that.
35:23Are you all right?
35:25I feel really with heaven.
35:26Unfortunately, Meadow's had to step out. So we're sort of a little bit in flux.
35:39It's the final countdown of the 80s jumper challenge. The team should now be sewing their sleeves, front and back together to create one garment.
35:54The main pieces are finished. We're going to see how they assemble and then I'm going to start sewing.
36:00Simon's about to cast off the sleeves. Dipsy's finished the bag now. She's knitting some shoulder pads.
36:04I've never made shoulder pads before. I'm knitting shoulder pads. It's like amazing.
36:12But over on the guitar team, they are a knitter down.
36:19Are you okay? Come here. It's going to be okay. It's going to be okay. All right? Just take your time.
36:25I want you to know that you are an incredible knitter as well as a crocheter and today doesn't define you as a knitter.
36:34I feel like I have a lot to prove.
36:37Like there's been times in my diving career, whether it's injury or whether it's any kind of like bad competition.
36:43Like don't fret about it. Like you've got it. Just get back in there. Get your head in the stitches.
36:48But always bring it back to remembering why you knit and the love for it.
36:53Stick with it. You're nearly there.
37:07Hello, sweetheart. Where you were, I've carried on.
37:12Stick's really good at the back. Good. Thank you.
37:16With Meadow back, the team must come up with a plan to attach the front and back together so they have a complete jumper.
37:23What we might have to do is have really short straps and pull that right over the shoulder.
37:28We'll have to find a magic way of sewing it together somehow.
37:31I see something that resembles a jumper over here.
37:40Yes.
37:42Well, it definitely fits over my head, just maybe not quite my hair.
37:46Right, we've got still quite a bit of stitching today.
37:51Big, puffy sleeve.
37:55For team checkerboard, Lydia and Tracy are both knitting the new bow for their adapted design,
38:00whilst Holger seems the front and back panels together.
38:03Now I'm feeling the pressure.
38:05It's going to be almost like the chequered flag at the finish line, isn't it?
38:10And for the guitar team, they must piece together their panels as best they can.
38:16We need to just put it on a body just to see how low it drops.
38:19That's my biggest concern.
38:20Because when you put it up against the body, this piece, which is the underarm, actually becomes so low it's revealing a breast.
38:32Knitters, you have one hour until your 80s jumper needs to be complete.
38:39Just one.
38:40Leave it out.
38:41Go and take a dive.
38:43Take a dive?
38:46We can do this, ladies.
38:47We can do this.
38:48We can, we can, we can.
38:51There's a bow.
38:52So that's the look.
38:53Yeah.
38:54That is the look.
38:55Yeah.
38:57Just a couple of quick stitches in there, mate.
38:58Yeah, I am, I am.
39:00It's not worth doing poorly, because if you do it poorly...
39:03Just stop talking.
39:04Do your thing.
39:07Does it reach on the other side?
39:08You're sweet, aren't you?
39:09Yeah.
39:10Let me get a pin.
39:11Pin it in.
39:12Pin it in.
39:13There you go.
39:14So that's one less thing to sew.
39:17Oh, jeez.
39:18Sorry.
39:20Oh, guys.
39:21Guys, guys, guys, guys.
39:26Quick check from the front.
39:27Do you like it?
39:28Yeah.
39:29I'm happy.
39:30Yeah.
39:31She's done.
39:32She is done.
39:33There you go.
39:35Oh, there we go.
39:37We have to hold ourselves.
39:43Oh, good grief.
39:45Knitters.
39:46Needles down.
39:47Your time is up.
39:49Yeah, we did it.
39:52Well done, girls.
39:53Well done.
39:54We did all right.
39:56It's a jumper.
39:57Almost.
39:59No, we've done all right.
40:00Team.
40:01Team.
40:03Brilliant.
40:04Tracey and Holger, as a combination, maybe let's not do that again.
40:14Well done, knitters.
40:15There's a lot of anticipation in the air, as well as a lot of 80s hairspray.
40:19All right.
40:20Speaking of, let's take it back to the 80s.
40:23Ooh.
40:24Ooh.
40:25Ooh.
40:26Ooh.
40:27Ooh.
40:28Ooh.
40:29Ooh.
40:30Ooh.
40:31Ooh.
40:32Ooh.
40:33Ooh.
40:34Ooh.
40:35Ooh.
40:36Ooh.
40:37Ooh.
40:38Ooh.
40:39Ooh.
40:40Ooh.
40:41Ooh.
40:42Ooh.
40:43Ooh.
40:44Ooh.
40:45Ooh.
40:46Ooh.
40:47Ooh.
40:48Ooh.
40:49Ooh.
40:50Ooh.
40:51Ooh.
40:52Whoo!
41:04OK, ladies, what do we think?
41:11That's really, really lovely. Yeah, very.
41:14Well, you've got that kind of dance vibe from the 80s.
41:17Well, you have with the leggings, that works.
41:19Slightly cropped.
41:21I'm a wee bit concerned about the length of this sleeve.
41:26I appreciate that they were going for the balloon sleeve and the balloons, but it's...
41:31And it could have been pulled in tighter at the cuff.
41:34Yeah. Would you mind turning round and we can look at the back?
41:37So, another balloon.
41:39That's not quite worked, has it?
41:42You really need a carefully thought-out chart...
41:45..to get the curve, absolutely. It comes round.
41:47Straighter lines are more straightforward.
41:50I do love that.
41:52We can ask someone to. It's really nice ideas in here, aren't there?
41:54Yeah, yeah.
41:56And what do you think of the second jumper?
41:58So, there's a guitar across the front, which is a very ambitious design, isn't it?
42:09It certainly is.
42:10A lot of detail.
42:13The definition and, again, that rounded shaping of the guitar.
42:17See, it's why we're not getting a really good shape.
42:20Mm-hm. The thing about intarsia is that you actually shouldn't end up with any holes,
42:26and there are some here.
42:30So, some ink...
42:32Let me just look.
42:35Ah.
42:35So...
42:36They've knitted them both going in the same direction.
42:38Yeah.
42:41They don't align.
42:42The back is pinned, I think, because of the difficulty with the asymmetry.
42:49Yes.
42:50It's such an ambitious design.
42:52It's not entirely worked.
42:56And what do you think of the third jumper?
43:03Well, Sheila, I think this is a really dramatic design.
43:05I like the graphic.
43:07Checkerboard.
43:08It's beautifully knitted.
43:10Nice intarsia. Good intarsia.
43:12Really good intarsia.
43:14Some nice surprises along the way.
43:16Yeah.
43:18This is...
43:20This is interesting.
43:23It's really lovely, isn't it?
43:24You like the ball.
43:25Yeah, I do.
43:25You like the ball.
43:26I think that's a lovely detail.
43:28You know that thing when you've got to think on your feet,
43:31and you know you haven't got time,
43:33and it's going on the catwalk tomorrow,
43:35and you end up thinking, what are we going to do?
43:38There's a real sense of people working very well together on this.
43:45You know, they're all singing from the same hymn sheet.
43:52You know, they're all singing from the same hymn sheet.
43:54You know, they're all singing from the same hymn sheet.
43:56OK, Di and Sheila, it's time to make your decision.
44:00We have made a decision.
44:02And in third place this week is the guitar sweater.
44:08So, who did that one?
44:11It was a really ambitious project.
44:14It's a shame about the neck and it not being finished.
44:18Yeah.
44:19So, in second place...
44:24..is the balloon sweater.
44:29So, can I ask who did this?
44:30I like the idea very much.
44:33Kind of light, airy, 80s fun.
44:37So, I guess...
44:38Yes.
44:39..there was a lot that we liked about this.
44:41One thing we particularly liked was we would be really hard-pressed
44:46to say that it was three different knitters.
44:53So, I definitely do think I put too much pressure on myself.
44:56I was really worried about the time and I also took on quite a big piece,
44:59and complicated piece that I maybe didn't have the skills at the time to do.
45:03I hope I've done enough.
45:04I do hope I've done enough.
45:07I've done my all.
45:11Well, what an amazing icon week.
45:13That was so much fun.
45:15But I have to get out of you.
45:18Who's in trouble?
45:19Well, Stephanie, we did like the idea of the Chelsea pensioner icon, but...
45:31Her sewing skills here really let her down.
45:33The 80s jumper that Stephanie was a part of the team
45:37really was not a success at all.
45:40So, I think Meadow...
45:44..her intarsia skills were not great.
45:46She was ambitious, but maybe over-ambitious.
45:49There were actually quite a lot of mistakes.
45:54Who's up for big knitter this week?
45:56For me, Holger nailed it.
45:59His design skills are immaculate.
46:03Lydia.
46:06I love Lydia's design.
46:07Yes. I really do.
46:09So, it is a tough one this week, but we have decided.
46:19Well done, knitters.
46:22I mean, you've absolutely smashed icons week.
46:26But it's a competition, so we are going to find out
46:29who has reached true perfection
46:31and who will sadly be cast off.
46:34So, our big knitter this week is Holger.
46:45Many congratulations.
46:46I'm going to give Holger his sheep badge.
46:49And now for the part that we all hate.
46:59The person being cast off is...
47:02Meadow.
47:12You should be really, really proud of everything that you've done here.
47:15It's very sad to be leaving.
47:21I've learned so many life skills.
47:23And being with the other knitters as well,
47:25seeing what different things they do
47:26and how I can take that into my own knitting.
47:28It's been so incredible.
47:30Meadow is so creative.
47:32I know she's not been knitting for very long,
47:34but I also know she can turn out some really good stuff.
47:36So, I'm very excited to see what she creates.
47:39It's been a delight, you know, to be in her presence,
47:41to see her ideas,
47:43but her stitch work let her down, unfortunately.
47:46And it was just really sadly time for her to go.
47:49I'm really happy that I've taken part and had this experience
47:52and I've loved every minute of it.
47:57Next time, we're heading to the beach
48:00as the knitters design swimsuits for Team GB.
48:04So, a little on the skimpy side.
48:10An attempt to crochet a deck chair.
48:14Can someone grab me a pina colada, please?
48:16I mean, at this point, what am I doing?
48:34This is put like a bed when they're midnight.
48:36This is my own adventure it takes to edge that we have to study.
48:44This is my trip as a woman and she –
48:47at this point in a personne,
48:48that's not a geely ent conventional design.
48:49I am actually going to fashion this momentum forward.
48:50It's never going to be a dream to do,
48:51but we have to Lopez.
48:56As wissen, we're following her in charge for this episode.
48:58Please see!
49:01Wait till the Valentine's Day!
