Local Liberal Democrats have called for the Chancellor to slash VAT for the hospitality sector, ahead of the Budget next week.
On Friday, November 21, Liberal Democrat MPs for Woking and Guildford, Will Forster and Zoe Franklin, alongside Liberal Democrat leader of Woking Borough Council Ann-Marie Barker, visited Cellar Magnifique in Woking, a small, independent wine bar and met Roland Foxcroft, who owns the business.

Will Forster, Zoe Franklin and Ann-Marie Barker echoed their party’s calls for an emergency 5% VAT cut for pubs, restaurants and other hospitality and entertainment businesses at the Budget, as part of a bold £12bn plan to tackle the cost of living.

00:00I'm here at one of my favourite wine bars in Woking to ensure that we have an immediate
00:18help for businesses by having a 55% cut in VAT and that should last between now and April
00:2527. That should put money back in people's pockets and help businesses.
00:30Here in Churchpath looking at some of the local businesses here in hospitality, in food and
00:38beverages. We've got Cellar Magneth here, we've got Roz's fruit and veg shop, we've got Jeff
00:45a restaurant as well. They're all local businesses that suffer from Labour's jobs tax with the huge
00:51increase in national restaurants and the Lib Dem proposal as we go into the next budget is that
00:57Rachel Reeves should look to cut 5% off VAT for businesses in hospitality and entertainment.
01:05So do you think a VAT cut 5% trying to make some products a bit cheaper would help you?
01:11I think it would help. I think we've obviously had a very tough year as you know. I think the VAT
01:18would make a big difference going forward. Good, excellent and I think it's those measures
01:24to hopefully help you as a business but help customers as well because I'm not surprised
01:29some customers are struggling to come here because it's just a really difficult way to make ends meet
01:33at the moment. Yeah I think we're seeing sort of a two-fold problem right. It's a cost of living
01:39crisis from a customer perspective and a cost of doing business perspective from ours. So I think
01:45one needs to sort of address both of those things entirely differently.
