Prime Minister Refuses to Guarantee Local Elections Will Go Ahead Next May. Woking’s MP, Will Forster, has slammed the Prime Minister for refusing to guarantee that local elections will take place next May - leaving voters in the dark over whether they’ll get their say at the ballot box. Speaking in the House of Commons during Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Forster demanded a cast iron guarantee that voters in Woking, and across the country, would not lose their democratic right to vote.

00:00The Times has reported that local elections across the country will be
00:07delayed for a second year in a row. The leader of my local authority, Surrey
00:12County Council, has had to go on record to say that he hasn't called for
00:16elections to be cancelled, but other Conservatives clearly have. Mr Speaker,
00:22can the Prime Minister give me a cast-iron guarantee that my constituents in
00:27Woking and others across the country will not lose their democratic right to vote?
00:31I thank you for his question. He knows we inherited a situation where local
00:36councils were underfunded and millions were wasted on duplication. By reforming
00:41the system which this war is doing, we will save money and reinvest it in
00:44improved public services. In Surrey, just in response to his question, we expect the
00:50elections to be in the new unitary councils and we will be setting out the planned
00:54timetable very shortly.
