00:00Peace mediation always needs patience.
00:03And of course when you have a 28-point plan, which is put out as a first draft, there's
00:09going to be work to be done.
00:11I think the plan has three levels.
00:14Level number one is Ukraine, what happens to Ukraine, land swaps, etc.
00:20Then level number two is Europe and European security, EU and NATO.
00:25And then level number three is the transatlantic partnership.
00:29So with these things, you know, it takes time.
00:33That's why we have our national security advisors in Geneva today speaking with Foreign Secretary
00:40Rubio, with Andrea Jermak and others.
00:45So you know, one day at a time.
00:47Is there anything specific though you would like to address first?
00:50No, I think, you know, we work on this as a team.
00:53So that's why we had 11 countries from the Coalition of the Willing meeting here in Johannesburg
00:59yesterday, including Canada and Japan, who are strongly committed in finding a just
01:06and lasting peace in Ukraine.
01:09And we work on the text together.
01:11We negotiate together.
01:13And I don't want to lift up any specifics at this stage.
01:15Do you believe this though was Europe being sidelined to a certain extent?
01:19Well, I mean, I guess yes and no is the right answer.
01:23Yes, in the sense that we hadn't seen the document beforehand, but no in the sense that now we're
01:28negotiating and discussing with our American friends and allies.
01:31So I'm not too concerned.
01:33I think quite often in these types of negotiations, you need patience.
01:39You need to be cool.
01:41You need to tone down the emotions.
01:44And I guess to a certain extent be a little bit more Finnish and then you find a solution.
01:48You'll find the finishing line.
01:49But you seem certain that this will not be the final agreement.
01:54Why are you so certain about that?
01:56Well, it's a little, we're here in the G20, right?
01:58And here a document was approved.
02:02The establishment, that document took months.
02:06So it's never the first draft that goes through.
02:09You have to do many different iterations.
02:11I think it doesn't matter whether you're a lawyer or whether you're in the news business.
02:16When you deal with contracts, it takes time.
02:18Does that mean potential discussions with President Trump?
02:20You're known to speak to him often.
02:22Have you spoken to him this weekend?
02:24Well, now that you ask, 10 minutes ago, Prime Minister Meloni and myself spoke with President
02:30Trump.
02:31And what was the progress of those discussions?
02:33It's quite early in the US.
02:36The President of the United States wakes up very early and he works very hard.
02:40And he wanted to talk about the plan and the state of play.
02:43Are there more discussions planned this week?
02:44You mentioned Rubio is in Europe right now.
02:47Yeah, I think right now we hand it over to our national security advisors in Geneva and
02:53Rubio and the Ukrainian team and we see what comes out by the end of the scene.
02:58Okay, so it's unlikely then that this Thursday supposed deadline we'll see a final agreement.
03:03Well, it's difficult.
03:04I don't want to sort of preempt that.
03:07You never know with these kinds of negotiations.
03:10But I think the key right now would be to get a ceasefire and we'll see how things go.
03:16Yeah.
03:17Yeah.
03:19Yep.
03:21I'll see you next time.
