Transcript
00:00Hi, Brie.
00:02Hi.
00:08Hi.
00:25Sit, sit, sit on down.
00:27Sit on down.
00:29I've got to say, you guys,
00:31normally Cam got the most going on with his fit,
00:34but I think you might be outnumbered today.
00:36I'm son of the day. This a light day.
00:38You look like you just walked out of sinners or something.
00:40No, no, no, no. See, you tried it.
00:42That's right. What? All right?
00:44See, I just tried to emulate
00:47me making a message with my outfit.
00:49You know what I'm saying?
00:50I get it out the mud, huh?
00:53Don't let the...
00:54Listen, I had to get it out the mud today,
00:56but we're going to have fun today.
00:57We sure are.
00:58We're going to have fun, so make sure you sit back,
01:01relax, and turn up.
01:04That's right.
01:05Listen, in all of the excitement of this beautiful crowd,
01:08I forgot to say welcome to 106 in Sports,
01:11where we, yes, where we are counting down
01:14these top five moments in sports that matter to the culture.
01:17I am Ashley Nicole Moss.
01:19And I am Cam Newton.
01:21Outside of the beautiful crowd that we have tonight,
01:23we also have a packed show as well,
01:25because tennis royalty Taylor Townstead is in the building.
01:29Oh, yeah. Yeah.
01:32And to solve, you know, my dog, playing part of the one and only,
01:37DeMarcus Boogie Cousins is here as well.
01:39Yes.
01:40And also, you guys have the same nickname, Boogie.
01:43Boogie. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Boogie, Boogie, Boogie.
01:45It's going to be going down a day.
01:48So please act accordingly, Ashley.
01:50You're already on strike one, all right?
01:52I have no problem getting strike two and three.
01:54Listen, plus a lot more.
01:56But before we get started with the countdown.
01:58That's right, too.
01:59You're trying to big dog on national TV, huh?
02:04But before we get started with the countdown,
02:07here are some of our favorite highlights from this week.
02:10This past weekend, FAMU in Alabama A&M gave us a tight one.
02:14FAMU pulled out a 26-23 win behind a big day from R.J. Johnson.
02:20The third, he threw for 290.
02:24Now, dang, you couldn't get one more yard to get the 300?
02:27Oh, block?
02:28Ah!
02:29But he made it up with three touchdowns.
02:31The girls in the box also gave us a straight-up banger on Sunday.
02:35And Josh Allen did what Josh Allen does best,
02:38and that is put on an absolute show,
02:40breaking another one of Cam Newton's records.
02:45No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
02:48It's OK. It is OK.
02:51And I'm not going to be the one that's going to hate.
02:53I'm going to be the one to congratulate.
02:56We love that.
02:57Come on now.
02:59After weeks of waiting and questions
03:01and nonstop controversies,
03:03Shador Sanders finally got his first real taste of the NFL.
03:07We know you had some strong feelings
03:10about what you saw, what you didn't see,
03:12the position that the Browns are not putting Shador in.
03:16Do you want to give us a little bit of a sprinkling
03:19on your thought process?
03:20You can say all the right things in front of these cameras.
03:23Mm-hmm.
03:24But I don't listen to those things if you're showing me different.
03:28Kevin Stefanski for me has shown time and time again
03:31that he does not want Shador Sanders to succeed.
03:35And it's evident when reports has it that the offensive line,
03:40that was the first time that he got reps with them in a live game.
03:46Hold on.
03:47When you look at what Shador Sanders brings to the NFL platform,
03:51you look at what Shador Sanders brings to the Cleveland Browns.
03:54It's evident that he is extremely talented,
03:58but it still is needed when you need reps, when you need help.
04:02And I don't think he's getting that, not adequately.
04:05So then you start to say, Kevin Stefanski says publicly,
04:08well, Dylan Gabriel is still our guy.
04:12Mm-hmm.
04:13He's still having even clear concussion protocol.
04:15This is true.
04:16Don't tell me what you think I want to hear.
04:19Or like my daughter said,
04:21don't tell me what you thought I wanted to hear.
04:23Huh?
04:24Tell me.
04:25Like, show me.
04:26I'm from Missouri by way of Atlanta, Georgia.
04:27Wakanda.
04:28Huh?
04:29I go by what you show.
04:30Then you start to say, well,
04:32he didn't get no reps with the first team.
04:34Well, then let me, let me, let me, let me, let me.
04:36Let me, let me, let me, let me.
04:38Let me bring it back even to more.
04:40I'm trying to take you somewhere now.
04:41I'm on the ride.
04:42The insufficiencies that Shador is being dealt
04:45versus what Dylan Gabriel.
04:47He said he don't get no reps with the first team
04:49because Dylan Gabriel need all the reps, right?
04:50Mm-hmm.
04:51Well, you just had Joe Flacco early in the season, right?
04:53Right.
04:54Did Dylan Gabriel get any reps as a second team?
04:56He did.
04:57As a second team quarterback,
04:59he got first team reps when Joe Flacco
05:02was the quote unquote starter.
05:04So don't tell me you don't give a backup opportunity
05:08when you give him a backup opportunity
05:10when the situations was different.
05:12Let the church say amen.
05:13Amen.
05:14Stop me when I, when I, when I tell a lie.
05:18I will say though, points were made absolutely,
05:21but we cannot negate the fact that
05:23although it wasn't the most ideal situation,
05:25his dad, Deion Sanders, was extremely emotional
05:28seeing his son get his NFL star.
05:31And he said that he cried when he watched it.
05:33So although it wasn't ideal,
05:35it did mean a lot to Deion to see his son out there living his dreams.
05:39So I think that's a positive in the situation.
05:41No?
05:42If I'm Deion Sanders, I see a situation where like, yes.
05:46Is he playing? Yes.
05:48But not like in these situations.
05:49Because whether it's management, whether it's a head coach,
05:54I don't give a doggone what it is.
05:56Somebody ain't looking out for my son the way somebody else looking out for somebody else's son.
06:01Well.
06:02Let the church say amen.
06:03Amen.
06:04Cool.
06:05All right.
06:06Well, look.
06:07Bars were dropped.
06:08And if you could believe it, that's not even our countdown story.
06:11We are now going to get into the countdown.
06:13So are you guys ready?
06:14All right.
06:15Okay.
06:16Here we go.
06:17Today's number five stories about love and basketball.
06:20Clay Thompson is clapping back at people who have something to say about his relationship with Megan.
06:27Yes.
06:28Clay Thompson shut down former NBA players Jason Williams and Patrick Beverly
06:34after they claimed his relationship with Meg the stallion was hurting his game.
06:39Clay called their comments, quote, disgusting and disturbing.
06:43And he's making it very clear that Meg isn't the problem.
06:47The way people talk about women is.
06:50I know that's right.
06:53It wasn't just what was said, but how it was said.
06:56Jason Williams said this on his Instagram.
06:59Quote, it only takes one P-U-S, other letters, to drag a battleship across the desert.
07:06That's how powerful it is.
07:08Then Clay then responded on his Instagram saying, referring to my girlfriend as a,
07:13is so disgusting and disturbing, especially from someone who played in the NBA.
07:17How would y'all feel if I referred to your wives in such a way?
07:20He added Pat Bev and said, do better fellas.
07:23Very disappointed.
07:25First of all.
07:26Um, so obviously this story just isn't about celebrity dating.
07:32It's about disrespect.
07:33And I know, and Cam, you probably will remember this reference.
07:37It seems as though that women are given the brunt of when an athlete is not doing well.
07:44It's an easy target.
07:45Oh, it's cause his girl.
07:46It's cause his wife.
07:47You remember the Jessica Simpson curse when Tony Romo was dating her on the Dallas Cowboys.
07:52Every, every bad game Tony Romo had, it was Jessica Simpson's fault.
07:57Every bad game Klay Thompson had, it's Meg Thee Stallion's fault.
08:01Let me make this very clear for people who may not be as engulfed in the NBA as I am.
08:07Um, Klay Thompson has had two major injuries.
08:10Not one, but two.
08:12Klay Thompson's also over the age of 30, which is young in everyday life.
08:17But in basketball years, it's kind of old and he's getting up there and he's getting older every season.
08:21Okay.
08:22So Jesus himself couldn't make Klay Thompson play better than he's playing.
08:26So it's real low hanging fruit to say that his relationship with Meg is a distraction and it's this and it's that.
08:32Last time I checked, Pat Bev was playing overseas.
08:35He's not even in the NBA.
08:36So Pat Bev might want to pull out of this one and mind his business.
08:40I'm just saying.
08:41Yeah, you can't say that.
08:43Just saying.
08:45I can and I did.
08:48What was said, was it wrong?
08:51This is what I think.
08:53At no way, shape, form, am I condoning calling a woman out of their name?
08:58Mm-hmm.
08:59At no shape, form.
09:00Absolutely.
09:01Am I agreeing to call a woman out of their name?
09:03Okay.
09:04See, man, you got to understand.
09:06You got to make your point very clear.
09:08There's a but here.
09:10At no way, shape, form.
09:12I heard you the first time.
09:13Am I telling that calling a woman outside of her name.
09:17But.
09:18Is okay.
09:19What's the but here?
09:20He ain't doing nothing but doing bro talk.
09:23But you bro talking on a public platform.
09:25Which is cool.
09:26The only issue that I have, you don't refer to her or her goods as any type of explicit.
09:34The message is skewed because at no shape, form.
09:38I heard you.
09:39But bros still talk about bros.
09:44How you do it and it to be clear as okay, that's accepted.
09:49That's not accepted.
09:50I felt like they got too comfortable.
09:52Yeah.
09:53And why would their team give a sign off to say, okay, we're going to let that fly.
09:58No, no.
09:59Let it out.
10:00Put it out on Twitter.
10:01Put it out on Instagram.
10:02Put it out on YouTube.
10:03Uh-huh.
10:04I feel comfortable there, bro.
10:05But let me ask you a question.
10:06But to think that that will stop the debate of when dudes talk about dudes or certain situations
10:12in sports.
10:13No, that's not.
10:15I'm not saying it.
10:16If this were a regular shmegular person, but dude, you played in the NBA.
10:20Yeah.
10:21You should know better than that.
10:22Like, let me ask you a question.
10:23Let's, let's, let's shift it to the NFL.
10:25Okay.
10:26Is it Sierra's fault Russell Wilson was benched?
10:29No.
10:30Is it Sierra's fault Russell Wilson isn't the Russell Wilson we saw in Seattle?
10:33Is it her fault that he wasn't what he was in Pittsburgh now?
10:38Is it her fault that he isn't what he is now in, in New York and he's not playing?
10:42He got, is it, you know what I'm saying?
10:44So like, it's low hanging fruit to blame the wife, to blame the girlfriend, to blame
10:50the significant other, the partner.
10:52It's just low hanging fruit.
10:53You know, dang well, it is not Meg's fault that Klay's not playing well.
10:58The man got an Achilles and an ACL injury.
11:01He's over 30 years old.
11:02It's hard out here when you get older in sports.
11:05You know, it's not, your game's just not the same.
11:08Blaming Meg is wet.
11:10No, I'm just not, you know, but you know.
11:13I hear your point.
11:16Bros is going to talk regardless.
11:20And just like women have their conversations, dudes going to have their conversations too.
11:26Listen, that's my point.
11:27Two things can be true.
11:29Well, we want to know what you think is true.
11:32So for you at home, let us know what you think.
11:35Is Meg affecting Klay's game or is that just foul play?
11:39Join the conversation using the hashtag 106inSports.
11:42Don't go anywhere because still on the show tonight we have your favorite tennis player.
11:47It is Atlanta's very own Taylor Townsend is in the building.
11:51And the always outspoken DeMarcus Briggie-Cousins is here as well.
11:54Don't move.
11:55Boy, 106inSports on the way.
11:58To see you up next in the world of sports, go to BET.com for our next Up Series presented by Jeep Grand Cherokee.
12:12Welcome back everybody to 106inSports where culture meets the game.
12:19Who's ready to foul our first game?
12:21Look, one of the most inspiring athletes in the world of sports on and off the court.
12:27ATL makes some noise for your very own Taylor Townsend.
12:32How are you doing, sweetie?
12:33Five hundred bunches of balls.
12:34Okay.
12:35I'm doing good.
12:36You're welcome.
12:37I'm doing good.
12:38You're welcome.
12:39Yeah.
12:40I just, I just appreciate, um, and get right into it, man.
13:06I, I think what, what you've been able to display as a strong black woman has been something
13:13that us as black people can smile and say thank you for the representation.
13:21Absolutely.
13:22I appreciate that.
13:24Um, we, um, I know you want to talk about this, but we saw that front and center at the
13:28U.S. Open.
13:29Yeah.
13:30And it wasn't, I don't even want to say her name.
13:33The, the quote was no class, no education.
13:38And it was one of the things that the world saw.
13:41Yeah.
13:42As if to say she was trying to check you, but, oh, you big man, but go ahead.
13:48That's honestly what I thought.
13:49I was like, oh, you're mad for real.
13:51Um, but I honestly have been, I grew up being told, let your racket talk.
13:58And that's what I said.
13:59It's not the first time that this has happened.
14:02Not the second, not the third.
14:03With her specifically or just in general?
14:04With her specifically, even with other players, but honestly, like she picked the right one.
14:09It wasn't even just black people or black women.
14:12It was like Americans too, because there was that thing she said about America and everyone
14:16was like, wait, hold on now.
14:17Yeah.
14:18Like what?
14:19Slow down now.
14:20When you hear these words come out of black press and mouth.
14:22All right.
14:23Nah.
14:24Yeah.
14:25It could go any way.
14:26It was like on so many different levels.
14:29And I think that was the crazy thing about it.
14:30And I think that's the beautiful thing about tennis too, is like when you have a game
14:33that intertwines America with all these different countries, it's like America really rallies
14:38behind their own in moments like that.
14:40And I thought that was dope to see.
14:42I love hearing you talk about life after motherhood and that adjustment and falling in love with your body again
14:49and how honest you've been.
14:50Because that's something that Naomi Osaka has been very honest about.
14:53And she's been honest about her struggles with postpartum and how that's affected her game.
14:57You two were on a boat recently and the video went vile of you guys doing the Nicki Minaj challenge,
15:02which we love to see.
15:03But I want you to kind of talk to me about that friendship, that relationship, but also how important it is
15:09to kind of knock down that barrier.
15:11Like there's enough space for all of us and we all can kind of help each other in that space.
15:16Because only us as black women in spaces where there's not that many of us can understand each other's struggle.
15:22Yeah. I mean, it's funny that, you know, you say that because the invite was so random.
15:29Like we had spoken to each other maybe once or twice.
15:33Really?
15:34Before this trip.
15:35Wow.
15:36Yeah. And, you know, one of the times we had a very, like, intimate moment in the locker room in Cincinnati
15:42after she had just come off the court.
15:44And I just went up to her and hugged her and I was like, you're going to be all right.
15:47Literally, that's all I said.
15:49She was crying.
15:50She, you know, I could tell she wasn't happy.
15:51I was like, girl, you're going to be fine.
15:53That's literally like what I said.
15:54Yeah.
15:55And so she invited me to the vacation.
15:58And I was just like, at first it was the same.
16:00Kind of weird.
16:01Like, I don't know you like that.
16:02Yeah.
16:03It was the same thing.
16:04Right, right, right.
16:05What's up?
16:06Yeah.
16:07Like, what we got going on here, you know, because it was so random.
16:09And that also has like never happened.
16:12But when I went and like literally told her, I was like, I'm telling you, we're going to be in the same places
16:19and I'm going to come watch you play.
16:20She said, yeah, me too.
16:22It's not often that you see two people in the same draws of the same tournament, different places in the event, going and supporting each other.
16:30And I was like, I really feel like this is an opportunity for us to like shake the room a little bit.
16:35Yeah, and like be front and center.
16:37But it's not an act.
16:38It's so authentic and genuinely like I want to support you and you want to support me.
16:43Well, Taylor's not going anywhere because we're still counting down our top five moments.
16:48I hope everybody is ready for number four.
16:50Okay.
16:51Yeah.
16:52It is all about a new documentary that has been going viral on social media.
16:57Now, even if you don't know who this player is, now I do being a New Yorker because he was king in New York.
17:03The headline is very startling.
17:05All over social media, the clip and headline to the doc says from $20 million NBA career to moving back into the projects.
17:13And it's about Sebastian Telfare.
17:15Athletes, at some point you stop playing and the money looks a lot different.
17:20And there are some people who make that adjustment and they make that adjustment seamlessly and they're kind of prepared for it for life after football, after tennis, after basketball.
17:30And then there are people who struggle with life after that.
17:33What is your standpoint on this or your take on this rather?
17:36You know, I can speak on my experience.
17:39I haven't had an endorsement.
17:42I just got a racket deal for the first time in eight years.
17:45I'm self funding my clothing line to sponsor myself.
17:51I started that in May and I have for the last eight years, nine years, I've bought my own clothes, shoes.
18:02You know, I am just now getting in a position where deals are coming in.
18:07And with tennis, if you don't have that backing or those sponsorships or whatever, you're literally living off of your prize money.
18:17So what you make.
18:18You have to win.
18:19What you make.
18:20And if you're not.
18:21Right.
18:22You're in the red.
18:23Right.
18:24And so my output was very, is very, very heavy because a lot of, all of my expenses come out of my pocket.
18:34Pam, you made that transition.
18:37Taylor talks about thinking about that transition way before the time is ready to come.
18:42I wonder, though, when did you have the conversation with yourself, with your team that I got to really start thinking about life after football?
18:49And how did you prepare yourself to be in a lucrative position after you stopped playing in the NFL?
18:55I just want to educate people to how a situation like this happened.
19:00Why?
19:01Because people find out or they see $20 million.
19:04Mm-hmm.
19:05How you got $20 million and you back in the project?
19:08Not all on the bank, of course, when you get that 20 M's.
19:11Sometimes it may.
19:12Sometimes it is.
19:13But the old T word that us people need to understand, taxes.
19:20That's number one.
19:21And number two, if your output is way more than your input, your output will be the reason why you go broke.
19:32All right, Taylor.
19:33We want to play a little game that we call, and I need the crowd's help to repeat after me.
19:38It's called start.
19:39Start.
19:40Bench.
19:41Bench.
19:42Train.
19:43And we're going to walk over to the fan zone to do that.
19:46All right.
19:47Let's go.
19:51Okay, okay.
19:52Hello.
19:54Look, okay, so this is how the game works.
19:56Okay.
19:57We're going to give you three names, and you're going to start one, bench one, or trade one.
20:02Round one.
20:03These are our options.
20:05Four doubles, but new school.
20:06We got Coco Gauff.
20:07Okay.
20:08We got Naomi Osaka.
20:09Okay.
20:10And we have Flo and Steven.
20:11That's tough.
20:12I'm going to start Coco.
20:14Okay.
20:15She's still playing doubles right now.
20:17I think I would bench Sloan.
20:19Okay.
20:20I've played with Sloan before.
20:21We've done well together.
20:22Yeah.
20:23And I love Naomi.
20:25I'm sorry, but I got to try.
20:26I was about to say, y'all just was on vacation together, Christ's sake.
20:29Ain't you lying?
20:30No.
20:31A gold partner doesn't make a good double partner.
20:32Yes, because I've actually asked her to play, and she's like, yeah, nah.
20:36Our last category, Cam, you're going to like this one.
20:39Who do you call for a clapback?
20:41We have Atlanta's very own NeNe Leap.
20:43Queens' very own 50 Cent.
20:46And we got the boogie down Bronx' very own Cardi V.
20:50Okay.
20:51For a clapback?
20:52For a clapback.
20:53You got a clapback.
20:54I got a troll, a hater.
20:55Okay.
20:56Anyone.
20:57Could have used them at the US Open to give you some backup.
21:00Hot take.
21:01I'm taking 50 Cent.
21:0250 Cent.
21:03Yeah, 50 Cent.
21:04I'm starting 50 Cent.
21:05I'm starting.
21:06He's a professional troll.
21:07I'm starting him.
21:08Okay.
21:09And also, he's a businessman, so he understands when it's too much.
21:12Like, okay, I can go there.
21:13Yeah.
21:14But then he knows kind of like how to pull it back sometimes.
21:16Okay.
21:17I've never seen that.
21:18I know.
21:19I ain't never seen 50 Cent.
21:20The shots might hit.
21:21The shots hit.
21:22No.
21:23All of them hit.
21:24Okay.
21:25Okay.
21:26He over here trying to sledgehammer with an ant every time.
21:29That's who I want on my team.
21:30So, I'm gonna bitch party.
21:33Okay.
21:34And I'm gonna trade NeNe.
21:35Okay.
21:36Yeah.
21:37Okay.
21:38That's what I think.
21:39Well, Taylor, look, before we let you go, anything that you have coming up that we should
21:42keep our eyes and ears open for?
21:44What's in the works?
21:45Give us a little sneak peek.
21:47Um, in the near future, I'm just excited to spend some time with my son.
21:51I mean, I was gone for seven weeks.
21:53And so, like, just being able to be home and be settled before having to pack up and be in
21:58a suitcase.
21:59But my first tournament, I'm starting down in Melbourne for the Australian Open.
22:02Ooh.
22:03And down under.
22:04Yeah.
22:05Down under.
22:06Ms. Townsend, thank you.
22:08Yes.
22:09Please keep going.
22:10For sure.
22:11Because it's not a lot of us that's out there that can really resonate.
22:15Yeah.
22:16And the fact that you stay true and are staying true to yourself, chef's kiss.
22:21Thank you, darling.
22:22Atlanta, make some noise for your very own!
22:25The 4106 in sports is on the way.
22:31Make sure you do not move, because DeMarcus Boogie Cousins is in the building, and you
22:36do not want to miss this conversation.
22:38Welcome back, everybody, to 106 in sports, where culture meets the game.
22:53Pam had to leave the couch to go over there to show that side of the room some love.
22:59That was all love, but this isn't.
23:00Because our number three topic on today's countdown is all about Texas A&M versus South Carolina.
23:11They had a moment that took over the weekend when a Texas State trooper was caught on video bumping into South Carolina players in the tunnel, then stepping toward them like they wanted or he wanted the smoke.
23:26Now, the clip went instantly viral and had everybody talking, including LeBron, who called for his job.
23:34LeBron James reposted the clip and said that the troopers should be suspended immediately, calling the whole thing, quote, corny and questioning why an officer would escalate a moment with college kids to begin with.
23:45Stephen A. Smith also tweeted that the incident was, quote, unacceptable and that the officer also needed to be held accountable and that the optics of the arms trooper confronting players are a very bad look for everyone involved.
24:02Yeah.
24:03Cam, I will say this.
24:04He is also very lucky that those kids were raised correctly and didn't retaliate.
24:12Because if someone pushes you, your first instinct is to kind of defend yourself and push back.
24:17Those kids took the higher route and walked away.
24:19I don't know.
24:20This is what we've seen and rest in peace to the likes of the George Floyds of the world.
24:25Right.
24:26Rest in peace to the individuals that were senselessly killed because the police brutality that they had the authority to do so, they took it too far.
24:36When you have individuals like Colin Kaepernick taking a knee not to be rebellious, it's to bring light to an issue that is still evident in this country.
24:46Amen.
24:47So you can't tell me in College Station, Texas, that that specific officer thinks that African Americans are in favor?
24:57No, there's definitely an inferior underlining issue with him for sure because nobody reacts like that just unprovoked or unless that's already in their spirit.
25:06I absolutely agree with that.
25:07For sure.
25:08For sure.
25:09That's all I'm saying.
25:10It's like it.
25:15Racism is still evident.
25:17Mm hmm.
25:18But let's let's highlight individuals that are bad individuals.
25:21That officer is a bad individual.
25:23Absolutely.
25:24And he should not have a job because if he's a deputy, if he's a sheriff, if he's a person of high regard.
25:31Now everybody up under him is being taught by a bad individual.
25:37And that's the issue.
25:39That's the key.
25:40So for that, it's it's extremely frustrating that here we are in 2025.
25:46So much has been sacrificed, even dating back to I have a dream.
25:52We're still living in a moment where bad individuals exist and we need to control alt delete these bad individuals from having an opportunity to impact.
26:05Absolutely.
26:06Look, when we come back, DeMarcus Cousins is here.
26:09So don't move because more 106 in sports is coming up.
26:12Hello, everybody.
26:26And welcome back to 106 in sports where culture meets the game.
26:30We are so excited about our next guest.
26:32Let me make sure I get all these accolades correct.
26:34All right.
26:35Four time all star Olympic gold medalist and walking double double.
26:40Absolutely.
26:41106, make some noise for my dog, DeMarcus Boogie Cousins.
26:56How are you?
26:57How are you?
26:58How are you?
26:59There you go.
27:00Boogie meet Boogie.
27:01You dig what I'm saying?
27:02Feel me?
27:03For people who don't know, how did you get the nickname Boogie?
27:06Walk us through that.
27:07Cam won't tell me the origin of his nickname.
27:09You never asked.
27:10I did ask.
27:11Say less.
27:12I'll give it to you.
27:13What's the origin of yours?
27:14I got the name Boogie my freshman year, well, my only year at Kentucky.
27:17Okay.
27:18I had a coach by the name of Rod Strickland, NBA legend.
27:21When we would describe basketball players, we were like, you know, do they got certain,
27:24like, Boogie in their game or something like that.
27:26Oh.
27:27So I was one of those guys he considered that had a lot of Boogie in his game.
27:30Okay.
27:31Then the name ended up sticking.
27:32Is that how you got your nickname?
27:33Is that your nickname?
27:34No, no.
27:35I had to give myself an alter ego.
27:36I'm sure.
27:37Because one thing about it, bro, DeMarcus can't play basketball and be effective.
27:41That's fine.
27:42You have to give yourself a license to be, okay, this is the person that's the bad guy.
27:48This is the guy that is from Atlanta, huh?
27:51And I gave myself grace to say, okay, Cam is one person, Boogie is the other person that
27:57I'm going to give that person that grace to really be the show star.
28:01Did you feel that way when you were playing, that DeMarcus was one person and Boogie was
28:05a completely different person?
28:07Absolutely.
28:08Okay.
28:09You know, that's kind of part of my issue.
28:11For the most part, when the average person is watching you play or perform or, you know,
28:15do your art, they only see you in that form.
28:18So they start to believe that's exactly who you are as a person.
28:22And I'll be the first to admit, when I'm on the floor, I'm an animal.
28:25Like, I'm ready to rip your head off.
28:27I'm going to do whatever it takes to win the game.
28:29But once, you know, once the clock hits zero and I'm off the court, like, I'm a totally
28:34different person.
28:35There's no difference than, you know, Beyonce when she on stage and she refers to herself
28:39as Sasha Fierce.
28:40Okay.
28:41You know what I'm saying?
28:42It's all the same thing.
28:43And, you know, when it comes to, you know, people trying to figure out who you are as a
28:47person, like I said, that can cause some sort of an issue if the person doesn't understand
28:52who you are off the floor.
28:53I had to find out the hard way.
28:55A couple years ago, we was in a creator league.
28:58So I was like, who are I going to be there?
29:00They started listing down and listing people, this person, that person.
29:03I'm like, Boogie Cousins?
29:05I'll bet.
29:06Right?
29:07But before my team played his team, he had just got finished serving another team.
29:13It was like, yo, he damn, he'll score all the points.
29:15Yeah.
29:16But who would be?
29:17I said, he'll never do that on me.
29:18Oh, mama now.
29:20And what'd he do?
29:22Score all the points on me.
29:24Oh, mama.
29:25And I say, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
29:28I knew the type of way that I needed to play him was not going to be safe for that situation.
29:33Mm-hmm.
29:34I wasn't trying to be physical as much, but I wasn't trying to get embarrassed either.
29:38Which leads me to this point.
29:40A couple weeks ago, we had an individual by the name of Brittany Griner.
29:44Mm.
29:45And I asked her that same question.
29:48Could she beat Boogie Cousins in one-on-one?
29:52I definitely, I went on the record and said that I would beat DeMarcus Cousins in a game
29:57with a referee.
29:58Yes.
29:59I'm the one that's going to ask the question.
30:02Could she beat you in one-on-one?
30:05Hell no.
30:07But, but what would be, what would be...
30:10Short and sweet, hell no.
30:12But is there a world where you see a woman beating a man in basketball?
30:19Absolutely.
30:20And it's...
30:21But it's just not her with you?
30:22No, I'm, I'm different, so...
30:23Oh, okay.
30:24I'm separate.
30:25When you think about the game of basketball, it's, it's, it's thought about in different
30:28ways.
30:29You know, it could be thought about in the aspect of one-on-one, two-on-two, three-on-three,
30:33five-on-five, whatever the case may be.
30:35It's some people that are brilliant in the game of five-on-five, and also atrocious in
30:40one-on-one at the same time.
30:41That's a fact.
30:42You know what I'm saying?
30:43So when you think about it like that, and you break the game down like that, absolutely,
30:46I think, I think a woman could win.
30:48Absolutely.
30:49I actually forgot to tell the full part of the story when you played Demarcus in the
30:53Creator League.
30:54Yeah.
30:55He dropped you.
30:56And you dropped your hat.
30:57I dropped you, for sure.
30:58Okay.
30:59So, hold on.
31:00Matter of fact, give me your explanation of what you mean by dropping.
31:02You hit the floor and your hat followed.
31:04No.
31:05That sounds like a drop to me.
31:07No, no, no, no, no, no.
31:09Who takes a charge at the three-point line?
31:11Ooh.
31:12Listen, who takes a charge in general?
31:14I was trying to get the ball back, brother.
31:17And I was losing all type of options.
31:19So I said, let me just take a charge.
31:21You are admitting you dropped and hit the floor.
31:23No.
31:24Well, listen.
31:25Okay.
31:26But how I got there was different.
31:29A drop was a drop.
31:30But speaking of drop, we're going to keep it moving with our countdown because in at number
31:33two, it is all about somebody who was dropped from the Dallas Mavericks.
31:38Sheesh.
31:39We're talking about Nico Harrison.
31:41The Dallas Mavericks recently fired the GM after a disastrous run of players' trades
31:46and injuries that left the team spiraling.
31:49Most notably, the trading of Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis.
31:54A lot of us were just taken aback that you would trade away a player of Luka's magnitude,
31:59especially when the Dallas Mavericks were just fresh off of the Western Conference Finals.
32:03Yeah.
32:04So it had a lot of people wondering if there were underlining issues between Nico and Luka.
32:10Because if you remember, everything that could possibly defame a player's reputation,
32:15his work ethic, seemed to just be coming out of the woodwork once that trade happened
32:20as a way to justify it.
32:22A lot of people were calling for Nico's job back then.
32:25He made it seem, you remember, he went on this entire media tour.
32:28The team got better.
32:29This was a better decision.
32:30And the Mavs aren't doing that well.
32:32So what do you make of this entire situation?
32:34When it's a move this big, it's no way it doesn't come from the higher-ups.
32:39Obviously, Nico is the GM of the Mavericks.
32:42Well, it was the GM, but everybody has somebody that they have to answer to.
32:46But the issue also is there were injuries that took place.
32:50Kyrie Irving, right, for example.
32:52Anthony Davis.
32:53Now, if you add in if those things went right, would he still have a job?
32:59I do think on paper, you know, when you look at the roster after the trade, it looked good.
33:03You know, was it a championship team?
33:06That's, you know, that's still in the air.
33:07But that's the only part I don't like about the firing of Nico
33:11is he didn't really get an opportunity for his plan to, you know, come to work.
33:15So if you were going to fire him, the firing should have happened after Luca, not after the trade,
33:20where he doesn't get to see if the trade works or not.
33:23Like, you're already in it.
33:24You might as well stick it.
33:25You might as well see what happens.
33:26Okay.
33:27As a person who was the face of a franchise, a lottery pick,
33:31a person that really moved the needle for a franchise,
33:36when you see a situation like Ja Morant take place,
33:39explain what would be a message that you would have for a job.
33:43Well, one, I put my arm around him.
33:45You can tell he's in need of real veteran presence.
33:48But that's one of my issues with the league.
33:50You bring in these young talents from all types of backgrounds
33:54and the people that are bringing the talents in don't relate to these kids
33:58from these different backgrounds.
33:59So the moment it becomes uncomfortable for the, you know, the person that brought them in,
34:04they automatically get a bad label.
34:06When in actuality, you just can't relate.
34:08Our foundation is different from those coming from, we're going to just label it a PWI.
34:12Yeah.
34:13Once that situation comes to a head, it's going to always be a difference.
34:17And I think that's what we're looking at now.
34:19Yeah.
34:20Well, we want to know what you all think.
34:21So make sure you're using the hashtag 106inSports.
34:25And coming up, the number one topic plus more from our very own DeMarcus Cousins.
34:30Make sure you don't move because more 106inSports is coming up.
34:34Welcome back, everybody, to 106inSports.
34:48We have reached the number one story in our countdown.
34:51But before we get into that, recently there was a story about LaMelo Ball.
34:55And when he was going through the draft process, he had sat down with the Timberwolves
35:00and asked him, hey, what do you want to do when you retire from the NBA?
35:05And he said, I want to be president of the United States.
35:08That's right.
35:09Okay.
35:10Listen, high aspirations.
35:11But they basically said that that was something they used to determine that he was not the player
35:18for their organization.
35:19They ended up drafting Anthony Edwards, which worked out phenomenal.
35:22Ant-Man, we love him.
35:23Atlanta's very own.
35:24But the question I really have for the both of you,
35:27is there too much emphasis on the ridiculous questions,
35:32the non-sports related questions when it comes to the draft process
35:36in determining whether or not a player is ready to either play or lead your organization?
35:41Boogie, I'll start with you.
35:42I think it's yes and no.
35:43You got to remember this is a billion dollar business.
35:45So they're deciding on who they're willing to invest their money on.
35:48So they want to know everything about you from your favorite color
35:51to your favorite food to who your favorite elementary school teacher was.
35:55It does get a bit ridiculous sometimes in the interviews.
35:58And I've witnessed it firsthand.
36:00So I know.
36:01But at the same time, it also makes sense.
36:03It's no different than qualifying for another job.
36:06Your thoughts on the obviously a little bit different from the NBA,
36:09but it's still a draft process.
36:10And we've seen stories come out at the ridiculous questions that Jim Harbaugh.
36:14He was with the 49ers, and he asked me, jump like straight into it.
36:21You know, we sat down, shook hands, cool.
36:23He said, hey, we drafted you.
36:25Your daddy going to be an issue?
36:26I said, what?
36:29He just came and flat out asked me that question.
36:33And not given the climate of the question, I went through an NCAA investigation,
36:38allegedly, and came out unscathed.
36:42But the reality of that was they do that because they can, but I get why they do.
36:50They need to see if they're going to get a ROI.
36:53Well, for the people who don't understand what that is, they want to see if they're going to get a return on their investment.
36:58You both mentioned the money involved in professional sports, which leads us to the number one topic of the week.
37:04And that is all about Steph Curry.
37:07After 13 years, he is parting ways with Under Armour, and the Curry brand is going independent.
37:14When you see this type of situation happen with player representation,
37:19do you see more players getting involved with representing themselves from the apparel side?
37:24I think it is something that's happening.
37:26There's been a few guys that kind of come out on their own and try to create their own brand.
37:30I think the biggest right now would probably be somebody like Jalen Brown with his own brand in Boston.
37:35But I think it's a dope thing, kind of compared to the music business.
37:40Demarcus, before we let you go, I know you're now in the media game, and you said you are loving it.
37:46How do you balance being an athlete and having to critique athletes?
37:51And is it ever uncomfortable for you because you are part of the brotherhood, you don't say certain things?
37:56Can I ask it?
37:57Go ahead, ask it.
37:58Have you ever got the, he's bitter or he's hating?
38:02Yeah.
38:03From players?
38:04From a player? Never.
38:05It's coming.
38:06It probably is.
38:07I'm telling you.
38:08No, I believe it.
38:09And I've seen you also have to kind of go through that.
38:11Like my man back there in the back was like, yo, bro, I'm Team Gilly over here.
38:15We Philadelphia Eagles fans.
38:16And I'm like, bro.
38:17I am a Jalen Hurts fan, by the way.
38:19Roll Tide.
38:20Uh-oh.
38:21I don't appreciate that shit.
38:22Oh.
38:23Nah, nah.
38:24I'm glad we went there.
38:25What college did you go to, brother?
38:26I went to Kentucky.
38:28Where was I born?
38:29So he set trippin' those.
38:30You know what I'm saying?
38:31I'm set trippin'.
38:32You got to pick a set at Burb, Auburn or Alabama.
38:34Yeah, brother, it's all right.
38:35We beat them, too.
38:36You know what I'm saying?
38:37Y'all got one rinky-dink.
38:38That's okay.
38:39Rinky-dink.
38:40Stinky-dink.
38:41It's all matter.
38:42That thing's still bling-a-dink.
38:43Look, that's going to do it for us here at 106 in Sports.
38:45Big thank you to our guests.
38:47First and foremost, Taylor Townsend, Atlanta's very own.
38:50And DeMarcus Boogie Cousins, make sure you hit us up using the hashtag 106 in Sports.
38:54As usual, Cam, you have the last word.
38:57Oh!
38:58Everybody stand up.
38:59Everybody stand up.
39:00Okay, here we go.
39:01Hey, in this good faith of speaking life into each other, I would challenge everybody
39:06to repeat after me.
39:07Hey, you.
39:08Hey, you.
39:09Hey, you.
39:10Hey, you.
39:11Hey, you.
39:12I love you.
39:13I love you.
39:14I love you.
39:15And as I always say, one hand out, one finger, one pinky, one thumb, all together.
39:21One love.
39:22One love.
39:23106 in Sports.
39:24We out of here.
39:25Thanks to Judith Thomas, please.
39:26Thank you, Tony.
39:27OK.
39:28Thanks, Vic.
39:29Thanks, Doc.
39:31Thanks for hanging out.
39:32We love you.
39:34We have fun.
39:35Cheers to celebrate.
