00:00All right, big news coming out of Brooklyn in the WNBA world.
00:03The New York Liberty have found their head coach.
00:06They're hiring Chris DeMarco, a longtime Golden State Warriors assistant,
00:10to be that next head coach.
00:12And this ain't just some rookie off the street, y'all.
00:15DeMarco has literally climbed the ladder in Golden State,
00:18starting as a video intern back in 2012
00:21and becoming a top defensive mind on the staff that, as you know,
00:25has won four NBA titles.
00:27Now, here's what I like about the hire.
00:30Because you can ask around the NBA.
00:32This man is known for his defensive smarts and player development.
00:35And that's going to be huge for a Liberty team
00:38that's trying to maximize their star talent in the big three,
00:43Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquale Jones, and Brianna Stewart.
00:46He's also coached internationally,
00:48and he's been the head coach at the Bahamian men's national team for years.
00:53So that could give him a broader perspective, especially on leadership,
00:57and, of course, building a culture from the ground up.
01:00Now I know there are people out there that are thinking or even saying,
01:05well, hey, he's never coached a WNBA team before.
01:08And that's fair.
01:09That's a fair point.
01:10But Liberty GM Jonathan Kolb clearly wasn't looking for another veteran head coach.
01:16He wanted someone that was going to come in and re-energize a franchise
01:21that's a year removed from winning a championship.
01:25Bottom line, I think this is a big swing by the Liberty,
01:29bringing in championship pedigree, creative coaching,
01:32and a guy who, like Drake said, started from the bottom.
01:35Now if he can translate what worked in Golden State to the WNBA,
01:40this could be a great move for the Liberty.
01:44But this here ain't California, and this ain't the Golden State.
01:47This here is New York.
01:49The pressure is going to be on him to deliver.
01:52But all in all, welcome to Brooklyn, Coach DeMarco.
