00:00We have all made sacrifices and suppressed who we are.
00:03It is not a choice.
00:06It is a duty.
00:07When Netflix made the decision
00:08to bring awards darling The Crown to a close
00:11after five seasons, it caught many by surprise.
00:14Especially as creator Peter Morgan
00:15had previously planned the show for a six season run.
00:18So why is the Golden Globe winning series coming to an end?
00:21Let's break it down.
00:22The Crown will finish as one of the longest running
00:24original shows on Netflix,
00:26and one of the rare scripted shows to make it to five seasons.
00:29When many deals mandate additional financial incentives
00:32to those with a stake in the series after that point.
00:35So shows tend to become more expensive as they age.
00:37And The Crown is among Netflix's priciest series.
00:41This country was still great when I came to the throne.
00:43All that's happened on my watch is the place has fallen apart.
00:46In making renewal decisions,
00:47Netflix weighs a show's costs against its viewership returns,
00:51and other top secret data, including completion rates.
00:54That is to say, the streamer could reallocate
00:56some of its anticipated $17.3 billion spending budget this year
01:00to new programming, more likely to attract new subscribers.
01:03Rather than renewing a veteran series for an additional season,
01:06should its internal metrics fail to impress.
01:08Netflix, like other streamers,
01:10does not release traditional viewership data,
01:12and declined to comment for this story.
01:14As for The Crown, Imelda Staunton will take over as the queen.
01:18Season three of the series, starring Olivia Colman,
01:20is currently streaming.
01:21If I may offer two pieces of advice,
01:24never turn your back on true love.
01:27In the second.
01:28Watch out for your family.
