00:00She's found her prince charming, and the perfect dad for her children.
00:05I felt that he would protect them.
00:07But as is often the case, it's a little too good to be true.
00:10I never knew when he was going to snap.
00:13This prince has a closet full of demons.
00:16It's a perfect storm that's really just a recipe for disaster.
00:21What will it take before a desperate wife takes matters into her own hands?
00:27He looked like a monster.
00:30Not all fairy tales have happy endings.
00:36When love goes wrong, a woman can do the unthinkable.
00:50Meet Donna Brown.
00:52In the early 90s, life is good for this successful single mom.
00:56She has a good job as a nurse technician at a local hospital.
01:01I love to help people.
01:03I love to see them heal and get better and walk away.
01:07Hey, how are you doing?
01:08I'm good, how are you?
01:09I'm good, you know?
01:10Yes, I'm home.
01:11Donna is a hardworking woman.
01:15She's very devoted to her kids.
01:17To the outside world, Donna seems like a woman who's got her act together.
01:22Check on Mr. Hopkins in room four.
01:23He had a rough night.
01:25I have known Donna since we was about eight years old.
01:29Donna's a very beautiful person.
01:30She is one in a million.
01:32See y'all tomorrow.
01:34But deep down, Donna is vulnerable.
01:38Her dad bailed on the family early on, and her mom got sucked into a downward spiral of addiction.
01:44At an early age, for Donna, I took a wrong turn in life.
01:49You know, I became a drug abuser.
01:57And when it comes to men, it's been one long string of heartaches.
02:02Yasmin, that's my first child.
02:05Her father was kind of like my first love.
02:08We were together for most of my teenage years, and I had Yasmin at the age of 18.
02:13We kind of grew up and grew apart.
02:18Boyfriend number two, Eddie, isn't much of an improvement.
02:22We had a baby, a son, Joshua, my second child.
02:26Joshua's father hit me once, and I called the police.
02:31When I had him arrested, he fled the country, went back to Santo Domingo.
02:40Enter man number three, Roger.
02:43He seems like a straight-up guy with a solid military career.
02:47I found out that he was married, and so that kind of destroyed the relationship.
02:50And also, I found out that I was pregnant.
02:54Donna gives Roger a dishonorable discharge, but keeps the baby.
02:59At this point, she's raising two girls and a boy.
03:02Then, a few months after breaking up with Roger, Donna unexpectedly reconnects with Eddie.
03:13Hoping for some semblance of a family, she gives him another chance.
03:17But once again, Eddie can't live up to Donna's standards, and the relationship expires quickly.
03:26Though, not before she's pregnant yet again with her fourth child, Jonathan.
03:31Donna just got it in her head that she needed a man to complete her.
03:42She never really had a moment in her adult life where she was just single, holding still, loving life.
03:48It was always looking for the next boyfriend.
03:51At 26, Donna's batting zero with men, and she'll have to raise her four young kids on her own.
04:00I just decided at that time that I'm just going to focus on my kids.
04:05Still, she dreams that one day she'll find a father for her family.
04:09Two years later, Donna's on her way to see a girlfriend when a young man catches her eye.
04:21And then an angel walks up on me.
04:24You think I'm going to just let you walk past me?
04:26He walked over to me, and he said, hi, cutie.
04:32And he was so funny.
04:33I just, I kept walking.
04:35He followed me.
04:36He followed me for like four blocks.
04:38He had a personality that just made me so bubbly inside.
04:43I just couldn't stop laughing.
04:46Kevin is charming, different from any man she's ever known.
04:50So you and him having dinner or something?
04:51He was like determined to get to know who I was.
04:54And he was cute.
04:56He was really handsome and well-dressed and funny.
05:00Okay, well, how about...
05:01Kevin Jackson trails Donna for blocks.
05:04When she turns him down for a date, he won't take no for an answer.
05:08All right.
05:08All right.
05:09Finally, she gives in.
05:15You crazy kid, look.
05:18I have never met a guy like that.
05:20He had a way with words to get you to smile and say yes to anything.
05:27Donna's instantly hooked and thinks this time she just might have found Mr. Right.
05:32So, how would an outsider describe the two of you, Donna and Kevin, as a couple?
05:43Probably inseparable.
05:45Because we were always together.
05:48We spent so much time together that before you know it, we were together every day.
05:54Kevin seems like the model boyfriend Donna's been searching for.
05:59Every day, he brings her lunch at the hospital and picks her up after work.
06:04Within a couple of months, Donna is falling deeply in love.
06:08We confided in each other a lot.
06:11We really got close.
06:13We became friends.
06:15Best of friends.
06:16You had a deep emotional bond with Kevin, didn't you?
06:18Yes, I did.
06:19This was a new experience for me on a whole other level.
06:24The kind of relationship I had with Kevin is what I wanted all along.
06:30When Kevin starts showing interest in Donna's kids, it seals the deal.
06:35We spent a lot of time with them, and I loved him alone for just that matter.
06:41Because if I was going to be with anybody, they had to love my children.
06:45How's my babies?
06:46A year later, Kevin moves in.
06:49While Donna's at work during the day, Kevin stays home and takes care of the kids.
06:54And you trusted him?
06:56Yes, I did.
06:57I didn't have to worry about my house, my children.
07:01I felt that he would protect them.
07:03Now, you were working all the time, making the money, paying the rent.
07:08But Kevin's not working much.
07:10Explain that.
07:11I never concerned myself with it in the beginning, because he was just always doing everything else.
07:17So it didn't bother me that he wasn't working.
07:20Donna doesn't realize that every one of these men just basically uses her for her stability, her security, and she enables them to be lazy slackers.
07:30So you have to ask, is every one of these relationships going to end badly?
07:36Still, for now, Donna's trust in Kevin seems valid.
07:40I didn't want to be a single parent.
07:42I wanted my children to have a mother and a father, because I didn't have my mother and father consistently in my life.
07:47But the truth is, Kevin isn't exactly Mr. Mom.
07:58When my mom was at work, you know, he would be home taking care of us.
08:02However, he would be asleep most of the time.
08:05So it would be my older sister, Yasmin, who would help cook, clean.
08:08So she was like our second mom when my mom would be at work.
08:12When Donna finally spots the first red flags, she's completely caught off guard.
08:26Who are you on the phone with?
08:28After the first year of our relationship, things started to change.
08:33Don't get off the damn phone.
08:36For instance, the kids weren't allowed to answer the doors if someone came.
08:41Every time that phone rang, he wanted to know who was on the other line.
08:47I thought to myself that maybe it's some things that I'm going to have to change to please him.
08:53So I went along with it, even though I didn't like it.
08:56Kevin, baby, I'm sorry.
09:01Donna's mother also starts to see reason for concern.
09:05Kevin.
09:06Who's this?
09:07You know who this is.
09:09He would never, ever look you eye to eye when he spoke to you or when he talked to you.
09:15And I knew he was jealous and mistrusting.
09:18He wasn't my cup of tea.
09:20And I didn't really want him for my daughter.
09:23You know, I wanted the best for her.
09:25Oh, hi, mama.
09:27Oh, oh, wait.
09:28Soon, Kevin starts obsessively checking up on Donna when she's at work.
09:34Hey, Kevin.
09:35Where you been at?
09:36Baby, I've been busy with my patients.
09:39It became overbearing that I had to explain where I'm going all the time.
09:45What up, Kevin?
09:46I don't care if you have work.
09:47I called you about an hour ago.
09:48There are always warning signs for these women who tend to enable the men in their lives.
09:54And yet they rationalize them away.
09:56But I already have so much invested.
09:58It's me who needs to change, not him.
10:02Donna's fantasy family is about to shatter.
10:05Well, I knew something was really wrong with him when I went to the store one day while he was asleep.
10:15Coming up, Kevin completes his transformation from dream man to devil.
10:22You act like you don't know.
10:35Donna Brown has spent much of her life chasing after men, hoping to find one who's marriage material.
10:43Unfortunately, her latest love is beginning to show his dark side.
10:48Lenny?
10:49As Donna walks home from the market, she runs into Lenny Washington, one of her boyfriend Kevin's buddies.
10:55Tell Kevin to give me a call.
10:57I will, I will.
10:58Good seeing you.
10:59Good seeing you, too.
11:00Have a good night.
11:04Baby, you want to go to the store?
11:05Are you hungry?
11:06Yeah.
11:06Later that evening, Donna casually tells Kevin about bumping into his friend.
11:11He told me to tell you hi.
11:13We'll go fix our plate.
11:16All right, I made us some cheeseburgers, baby.
11:19What?
11:20You act like you don't know.
11:23Kevin walked over to me and slapped me.
11:27I was just so surprised and hurt that he hit me.
11:31And I couldn't figure out why.
11:32And he immediately ran over to where I was and grabbed me.
11:35And he told me over and over, I'm so sorry.
11:39I can't believe that I hit you.
11:40And he went on to explain that this particular friend of his had carried on with his girlfriend's behind his back in the past.
11:49And so I felt sorry for him because that was his friend.
11:52Donna accepts Kevin's apology and convinces herself it was a one-time event.
11:58All right.
11:59All right.
12:01After all, kicking Kevin to the curb would mean the end of her fairy tale.
12:05The spell Kevin has on Donna is so strong, it even drives her mother away.
12:18Why are you coming in here arguing all of them?
12:20I'm not arguing.
12:21He and I got into it.
12:24And Donna took his side.
12:29She said, this is my man, so I'm going to ask you to leave.
12:34If you don't like it, you need to leave.
12:35You asking your mama to leave?
12:37Yes, mama.
12:38It hurt an awful lot, but she backed him up, knowing the type of person he was, but she was committed to him.
12:48I never went back around after that.
12:57Pretty soon, Donna starts to notice that Kevin's acting paranoid.
13:01You left the door.
13:03Don't move.
13:05Kevin, baby, come to bed.
13:07And that's when I really noticed that something is wrong.
13:12I was blaming myself.
13:14I was trying to figure out what did I do wrong.
13:17I know I heard something.
13:18I know I...
13:20And it wasn't me.
13:22It was him.
13:23But when you're in the middle of it, you can't always see it.
13:27When you're in love, you can't see anything.
13:30Just a few weeks later, Donna discovers something that shakes her faith in Kevin to the core.
13:40I'm in the habit of when I'm doing my laundry.
13:44I check the pockets of everything.
13:46This is money.
13:47But this day, I found money, but it wasn't just money.
13:51You know, it was money with white powder in it, which I know is cocaine.
13:59My heart just sunk.
14:01Now my mind is racing.
14:07How long has he been doing this?
14:10And the fact that he had it in my house around my children?
14:15Donna is devastated.
14:17Memories of her mother's drug problems come flooding back.
14:20I despise drugs.
14:23I decided a long time ago that I was never going to be a drug addict.
14:28I was always going to be there for my children.
14:31Yet a part of Donna is also relieved.
14:34This explains everything.
14:38Interestingly enough, when she finds drugs in his pocket, instead of saying,
14:42Oh my God, Kevin is doing drugs or even dealing drugs, she's relieved.
14:46Now I have an explanation for his violent and erratic and controlling behavior.
14:52It's the drugs.
14:53This must be fixable.
14:56Donna isn't about to let Kevin's drug use hurt her family.
15:01He has to stop this.
15:03I have babies in here.
15:05I didn't ever want my children to be around drugs, ever.
15:16So that evening, Donna braces herself and confronts him.
15:20We need to talk.
15:21What?
15:23Kevin, I found this.
15:24She urges Kevin to go to rehab, confident he can change, just like her mother did.
15:29You doing drugs, Kevin?
15:30She stood by me through my drug addiction.
15:34She didn't approve, but she did everything that she could to help me through it.
15:39And I said, well, Kevin, you have to stop.
15:42You have to stop using.
15:43I've seen it destroy so many people's lives that I love, even my mother.
15:47I gave him an ultimatum.
15:49This has to stop, and if you don't stop...
15:50I said, you either stop doing drugs...
15:53Get out of my face.
15:54...or you're going to have to get out of my house.
15:55No, I'm not.
15:58And he kicked me in my mouth.
16:01Donna runs to her neighbor's apartment to call the police.
16:04She reports what Kevin did.
16:14Are you serious, Donna?
16:15But she leaves out a critical piece of information for the sake of protecting her man.
16:20Look what you did to my mouth.
16:22I didn't tell them about the drugs.
16:24I didn't want them to get in trouble.
16:26They could see my mouth was swollen now, and it was bleeding.
16:29Well, they asked me, did I want to press charges, and I said no.
16:32I just want him to get out.
16:33Who's this guy?
16:35Are you serious?
16:37Yes, I'm serious.
16:37Really, Donna.
16:42Over the next few days, Kevin begs Donna to take him back.
16:47But she refuses, deciding she's done with her violent boyfriend.
16:52Bye.
16:55That is, until she gets some shocking news that could handcuff her to Kevin for good.
17:02I can't get her back.
17:13In 1997, Donna Brown's a single mom of four, living in Harlem, New York.
17:19After her boyfriend kicks her in the face, she kicks him out of her life.
17:25Until two weeks later, when she gets news that changes everything.
17:29everything i learned that i'm pregnant
17:34donna's still not sure she wants to take kevin back
17:37but she feels she's at least got to tell him the news what's wrong kevin i'm pregnant
17:45how did kevin react to the news of your pregnancy kevin was extremely happy he was so proud
17:52i'm gonna be a father that's great he just talked on and on about how great of a father he was gonna
18:00be and my heart just melts i said oh he's so happy he's finally gonna have a kid i need to be
18:06responsible and this baby will help me she thinks she's done with him she wants him out and yet how
18:13can she kick him out of her life now maybe she should give him another chance maybe he would
18:18make a great father all of these thoughts swirl around in her head it's a perfect storm that's
18:23really just a recipe for disaster for the sake of her expanding family donna lets go of the past
18:32some days remind her of the good times they shared when they first met
18:37he would do the normal things like you know eat dinner with us and watch a movie
18:42we'd sit and talk like the old times but pretty soon the good times fade kevin's increasingly
18:52disturbing behavior overshadows everything
18:57he's not eating he's still pacing the house and he's he's doing more he's doing weird things now
19:07i will go to sleep and i wake up he's still standing there
19:09kevin what are you doing just staring and so his behavior got really weird what's wrong with you
19:17he was like dr jekyll and mr hyde he had this split personality
19:23donna wonders if she's made a terrible mistake kevin
19:32once you get so deep into drugs you lose reality you know he was demanding
19:38he was possessive he was a very jealous man that was one side of him then there was another side
19:48there were a gentle side to him you can't even play on a doggone video game but that gentle side shows
19:55itself less and less when he's high kevin lashes out at everyone get out of here when he's on the drugs
20:04he's like this like a evil person and he talks to you with attitude and when he's on drugs you only
20:11have a minute conversation with him because you have to get away from him too
20:18though donna tries to hide the cracks it's obvious to everyone that her so-called happy family is a fake
20:26i only tolerated his nonsense because donna is my best friend and she wanted me to try to make it work
20:33with her she really loved it donna's kids never know which kevin they're going to get
20:43there will be a time where he was this horrible man cursing us all out go to your room get out of
20:48here but then when we wake up he's like oh good morning and in the back of my mind be like well
20:54you know wasn't you just mad at us last night cursing us out and yelling at us calling us all
20:59type of names it would be confusing to all of us in the house
21:04are you still up when donna's eight months pregnant with their twin girls kevin's outbursts only get
21:15worse you know you get on my nerves sometimes one night her six-year-old son jonathan is reading in
21:21the living room i never knew when he was going to snap it just came suddenly so like i would just
21:26try to avoid it and not go anywhere near his direction what what you crying for you acting like
21:32a little sister you're worse than your little sister this time donna overhears from the next room
21:43and i told him to leave jonathan alone do not talk to my baby like that and i think the fact that i
21:50said my baby pushed him over the edge at that moment i just left on my own i went in my room and
21:58slammed my door i mean all i could do is cry like what did i do to deserve this i'm only a child
22:05jonathan is terrified as he listens to the heated argument outside his door how old he is
22:11in the back of my mind all i could imagine is oh my god i hope he would get off my mom kevin shoves
22:17donna and she land on her stomach get in my face and get what i told you i managed to get myself on
22:24the couch and i stayed on the couch for i think about five or six hours before i even got up i just
22:30laid there because i was in that much pain the next day donna feels guilty about what her kids had to
22:41witness mommy want to talk to y'all i can see that my children were becoming afraid of him so i'm trying
22:48to let the children know that what they're seeing is not healthy and that i'm sorry telling them how
22:53much i love them jonathan won't happen again okay i'm so sorry when you grow up don't hate your girlfriends
23:03donna feels trapped by fear and self-doubt she tells no one about the abuse if she had confided in
23:12me maybe it would have been a different situation maybe i'd have rather fought with him to have him
23:18fight with her you okay the path donna's walking is treacherous recruiting her own kids to keep her
23:25secrets it may give her strength to get through the situation but it gives kevin more strength
23:33to keep perpetuating the abuse several days later donna still feels lingering pain from the attack
23:43even worse she only feels movement on one side of her belly kevin i'm not feeling one of the babies
23:50move and so i told him that listen we have to go to the hospital that i only feel one child moving
23:57am you want me to fix this or what we'll go after i'm finished kevin reluctantly agrees come on he went
24:06with me to see what i was going to say i think he was scared more than anything scared of what i would
24:12say to the doctors and if he probably would get arrested at the hospital donna tells them she thinks
24:19something may be wrong with one of her babies kevin stays right by her side when the doctor asks what
24:31happened donna needs to think fast her answer will decide kevin's fate did anything happen
24:39coming up kevin's escalating drug habit puts donna's kids directly in harm's way that was very
24:46fight and offend donna brown is eight months pregnant and terrified a few days ago her cocaine addicted
25:07boyfriend attacked her she goes to the er fearing for the health of her unborn twins
25:13did anything happen but instead of turning kevin in she covers for him i told the doctors that um
25:23i slid down some stairs why would you do that donna it's new york city if you fight too many
25:28times they're going to take your children away that was my main concern not losing my kids
25:34on top of being in love with kevin wanting everything to work
25:38i think i just was just trying to keep my family together and make it sane as possible
25:46the doctor decides to induce labor
25:51donna gives birth to two healthy twin girls she is now a mother of six
25:57she brings the babies home donna is surprised by how kevin handles his new role as a father
26:13he is happy and helpful those twins those newborns were the perfect excuse for her to not deal with kevin
26:22and yet they were also the very thing that bound kevin to her but the happy phase is short-lived
26:32kevin's having a hard time breaking his addiction
26:38and he's getting more and more careless
26:40one afternoon donna's son jonathan comes face to face with kevin's habit
26:52i would find really like bags under the um cabinet you know and little white stuff in it
27:00and so i knew that they were probably drug using now i know this is why he's acting berserk
27:06i was very frightened of him the easiest way to deal with it was to just go along with it and to not
27:19make matters worse as kevin grows even more violent donna slips deeper into denial
27:28she suffers in silence telling no one that kevin's made her his personal punching bag
27:33i mean i'm getting hit in the face i'm getting busted lips i'm having bruises i don't even know
27:39that i have myself it never entered my mind that he was physically abusive to my daughter
27:47because had i known no way would i have ever allowed him to put his hand on my child
27:55so no matter how far it goes physical abuse emotional abuse any other woman would probably say
28:01donna walk away be done with this but she can't give up on kevin not just because of the dream
28:08but because of who she is the ultimate enabler i love you too
28:19amazingly it's not until the twins are three years old that kevin's lifestyle finally takes him down
28:25he's arrested for dealing and gets sentenced to two to four years in prison could donna's nightmare
28:35finally be over i cried but inside i was happy i was happy i knew that he needed to rest
28:43so that he could have the time what you mean you in jail kevin to sit and reevaluate his life our life
29:02while kevin is locked up on rikers island just eight miles from harlem life at the brown home is
29:08peaceful everything just went back to normal we didn't have to walk around on eggshells
29:15and i didn't have to report every single movement i make
29:28a year later kevin is released early on parole
29:31i'm doing good incredibly despite all the lies drugs and abuse donna takes him back when he vows to
29:39stay clean go up there to the janitorial they got a little opening apply and kevin does for a while
29:48he was going to church with us he was going to bed at night his old friends wasn't always coming
29:56around and he had a parole officer i honestly was happy like wow okay well this is the kevin we all
30:02know about and we all love and back in my mind i'm like wow he's really really changed donna fools
30:09herself into thinking that kevin is back to being her dream man and she's not the only one who's fooled
30:16when kevin came home from prison i soften up a little i gave him the benefit of the doubt
30:23i know a person can change now that he's won everyone's trust he plays the trump card
30:31and proposes you really believe donna that kevin was the one i tell you what if someone
30:37would have offended me if i were going to be with kevin i bet yes i wanted i wanted that family i still
30:43desire that family after seven years of a toxic and tumultuous relationship donna and kevin get
30:56married in donna's mind the ritual washes all the pain away it was a beautiful wedding she was a
31:04beautiful bride i was hopeful it wouldn't be a happy ending she had a perfect family she was married
31:13and she had a husband she had her children everything seems to be falling into place kevin is playing
31:23the part of the good husband and father or so it seems to donna and his parole officer he goes to
31:31whatever program she sends him he's working the times that she comes he's there she comes on sunday
31:38morning we're getting ready for church she likes what she sees
31:52a year after getting out of prison kevin is released from parole early
31:58you get us some wine i'll cook dinner all right and on the very first night of his freedom
32:04from no more parole donna what happened that's the beginning of our nightmare hey it's okay
32:12donna wants to celebrate with a nice dinner but kevin has other plans
32:19he stayed out all night partying with the old crew and i just i knew that that was the mark
32:28the mark of the beast coming up is kevin's latest bender the last straw
32:36that was the last time i seen him
32:47for eight years donna brown has been victim to her husband kevin's uncontrollable rage
32:57she thinks he's finally changed until once again his dark side shows itself stronger than ever
33:04so when he got off parole he did a complete 180 he started screaming and yelling the old kevin came back
33:11out full force way more violent than before even now donna remains in absolute denial
33:23i was ashamed to get out of the relationship because of what i felt other people would say like
33:28oh this is your fourth relationship and i just wanted to make with at least one of the children's
33:33father because i wasn't proud of my my past choices get out my face she takes the abuse for two more years
33:41putting up with behavior that threatens not only her life but the lives of her six children
33:50she's playing mind games with herself adapting and completely ameliorating what he's doing into
33:55something that's harmless it just keeps going and going it's something bad is bound to happen it
34:01just can't go on this way forever in november 2006 donna plans a weekend to try and repair their marriage
34:11okay see you in a little while she and kevin arrange for the kids to stay with family
34:19on the first night they host a birthday party for some friends
34:22and i was really anticipating having a nice time everything is going great
34:30until kevin's brother starts arguing with the birthday girl about the music
34:39so it wasn't turning out the way we planned it the party is clearly over where are you going kevin
34:47you acting like you my p.m i can go and come as i please but kevin's night is just getting started
34:57donna knows it could be hours before her husband comes home
35:00if he makes it home at all she decides to go to bed
35:03meanwhile donna's friend william runs into kevin at a nearby club
35:18he's drinking alcohol and he's being very loud at the club
35:22and then the owners everybody was looking at him like bill your friend is getting a little outrageous
35:29he was real different than them he even tried to do some drugs at the ball kevin starts making threats
35:38i sensed that he was on some drugs real heavy that night beside the alcohol because he was
35:44rambling raving in there and me and him almost got into it the bouncers throw an enraged kevin out of
35:50the club he left there with an attitude and that was the last time i seen him
36:11donna hears kevin stumbling back into their apartment when he starts ranting she instantly
36:17knows he's high my spirit says don't go to sleep you need to get up and you need to get out of here
36:27as soon as you can and then that other part of me you've been through this a million times
36:34he'll go on and on and on and he'll eventually stop i know what you're doing but donna can't sleep
36:42kevin seems even more out of control than usual this night was just different i felt it in my
36:50stomach i felt that it wasn't right with him and he was punching doors and i hear him say i'm gonna
36:56kill this bitch i'm gonna hurt her you know i'm gonna her up somehow donna pushes her fears aside
37:04and manages to fall back to sleep it's something she'll regret for the rest of her life
37:10she wakes up to a fist hitting her in the face and this was my first thought that kevin done left
37:19the door when somebody's in here attacking me because he had no reason to hit me
37:24but it's no intruder
37:27kevin is savagely beating her
37:29donna squeezes kevin's crotch hard hoping he'll stop startled kevin stops temporarily giving donna the
37:40chance to escape to the living room when i said to myself this is it you you're going to jail me i was
37:47getting the police he was going to go to jail i couldn't take no more of that before i can even get
37:51to the phone he comes behind me and he punches me he hit me so hard that it took the wind from me
38:04donna's now fighting for her life
38:06and he grabs me from behind and now he's he's trying to punch me
38:17and he starts to choke me
38:20the look in his face his eyes were so big i could see veins when i looked at him he looked like a
38:27monster and i remember just like kind of sinking and if he gets me there
38:36and i can't breathe it's over for me i mean my kids were flashing in my eyes my family
38:43be dying he's not he's gonna kill me
38:48as donna desperately fights to get kevin off her she reaches for the nearest object
38:55i don't know that it's a knife i don't know what kind of knife it is at the time i know i grab it and
39:00i just i poke him kevin collapses to the floor and i just got up and i ran
39:12donna looks back at her husband he's bleeding badly and he's not moving
39:18i saw the blood and then i realized that he needs help donna can't believe what she's done
39:24she's faced with an almost impossible decision get out or go back and try to help kevin
39:32in the end she follows her instincts as a nurse
39:36i choose to come back and help him and i'm running around i'm looking for stuff and i'm trained for
39:40this and i can't even think to go and get a clean towel but i'm looking and i grab a shirt and apply
39:47pressure i am i'm talking to him and he says it's okay it's over now he says it's over now
39:57despite everything donna still can't leave his side
40:01in this moment she wants nothing more than to save his life
40:07i'm trying desperately to get him to breathe and i was dizzy still in pain i'm scared i'm looking at him
40:16laying here and i just can't believe that this is happening
40:26after donna calls 911 an ambulance arrives within minutes the knife pierced kevin right through the
40:32heart an hour later he's pronounced dead at the hospital donna is arrested at the scene and later
40:41charged with second degree murder her bail is set at fifteen thousand dollars
40:47it didn't surprise me none at all that he would do that to her that that second personality his was
40:52something else he's real evil evil words can't even describe all those emotions i'm going through
41:01you never meant to kill him no i never meant to kill him never
41:04my whole world just just flashed before me my whole life like i just couldn't believe that this was
41:13happening after posting bail donna has to wait four years for her case to go to trial if convicted
41:21she could face up to 25 years in prison still trying to work still trying to to give my kids still
41:29trying to hold myself together because i'm sinking i'm sinking so fast
41:37in the end donna is found not guilty the jury concludes that donna acted out of self-defense
41:45no matter what his family thinks no matter what people say about me god knows that i am not a murderer
41:52and i had stuck by a man that didn't deserve five minutes of my time with donna you have a woman who
42:00has all of her dreams wrapped up in this perfect family this nuclear family this head of household
42:06and you have kevin the manipulative drug dealer who sees the opportunity to play the role that donna needs
42:13to fulfill her life it was the perfect storm that perfect storm almost cost her her life
