00:00Two U.S. senators have introduced the bill to codify the U.S.'s six assurances to Taiwan.
00:07The assurances are U.S. foreign policy commitments that date back to the 1980s,
00:11which said the U.S. will not pressure Taiwan to negotiate with China
00:15and will not take a position on sovereignty over Taiwan, among others.
00:20They've been central to U.S. policy on Taiwan for decades,
00:23but have never been formally entered into law.
00:25This new bill would do that, giving the assurances the, quote, full force of law,
00:30according to the senators who introduced it.
00:33They said in a statement that it will also ensure that any attempt to change the assurances
00:37will have to be reviewed by Congress.
