00:00It's Jeff Kirkshen at the CMAs with Thelma and James, but you also know them as Mackenzie Porter and Jake Etheridge.
00:11Hi, you two.
00:12Hello.
00:13I rabbit hold seriously really hard on your guys' music.
00:16Aw.
00:17Absolutely love your voices.
00:18You're like, and I hate it.
00:19And it's terrible.
00:20Thanks for coming.
00:22No, no, it's great.
00:22So we do something a little different here at this booth.
00:25I do one big question.
00:26Okay.
00:27So I give you one question, then I have you on your way, okay?
00:29Okay.
00:29And that was really hard for me because I've become a big fan of your guys' music and your connection.
00:33Now, obviously, the connection is a given.
00:35You're married.
00:36You have a child together.
00:37Like, that's a given.
00:38But I always felt, growing up as a musical theater kid, there's nothing more intimate than singing with somebody, right?
00:46There's just like this met-eye connection.
00:48Can you take us back to the first time you sang together and your eyes met?
00:53What was the song and what was the moment?
00:56Because it's already intimate whether you're with the person or not because you naturally are harmonizing.
01:00But it must have felt a little different, right?
01:03I feel like officially the first song we sang together was your song.
01:07Oh, yeah, yeah.
01:08Because that's a great question.
01:09A little known fact.
01:10Yeah.
01:10So I put out a song like, oh my gosh, like back in 2013 called If You Asked Me To.
01:16Yep.
01:16And at the time, him and I were just friends.
01:18And do you know Carolyn Don Johnson?
01:21Name's Maria.
01:21She was a, I mean, she's an iconic Canadian country singer, but she had a hit here too.
01:25Right, right, right.
01:26And anyways, she was, I was staying at her house.
01:28She was producing a song.
01:30And I was like, I know this guy who could like sing harmonies.
01:32I love his voice.
01:33So Jake came over, sang harmonies.
01:35And then he left and she's like, he's in love with you.
01:38And I was like, no, he's not.
01:40Spoiler alert.
01:40I was, in fact, in love with her.
01:43Yeah.
01:43So we have like a stamp of time of like when we were still friends.
01:48That song was on that record and got some airplay.
01:51Yep.
01:51Got me a record deal.
01:52And so it's me singing harmony.
01:53So that was the first official time.
01:55That is so incredible.
01:55It was a long time ago.
01:56Did she hit you with the friend zone?
01:58Like subtly?
01:59Well, you were, hey, you had a wonderful boyfriend at the time.
02:01Oh, that's good.
02:02Very good.
02:03Very good.
02:03I was living in Nashville.
02:04You were living in Canada.
02:05Yeah.
02:05I did.
02:06I did friends on him.
02:07Yeah.
02:07Yeah.
02:08I was very much in friend zone territory.
02:09It was okay.
02:10I snuck out.
02:11Yeah.
02:11Yeah.
02:11I see why you love him.
02:13I mean, I have a lovely wife and I'm falling in love with him.
02:15I know.
02:15He's such a good guy.
02:16He's a cutie.
02:17Listen, do yourself a favor.
02:19Thelma and James, just go listen to the music.
02:21But even more importantly, go on social and watch them sing around their house because
02:25it really is something special.
02:26They're raising a child together.
02:27They're making great music.
02:28It's magical.
