HUMPBACK WHALES GO WILD
WITH PIX AND VID
By Shuk Yee Tsang
A series of stunning videos shows humpback whales erupting from the water in explosive breaches, tail slaps, and powerful rolling in the deep ocean.
The moment was captured by videographer Geoffrey Aquino, 52, from Queensland, Australia, based in Noosa, who filmed the footage along the coastline from Noosa and the Sunshine Coast through Stradbroke, Moreton, Bribie, K’gari, and further north toward the Great Barrier Reef.
Some days, Aquino operates from high coastal cliffs to gain a wider vantage point of whale movement.
Other days, he launches drones from boats or shifting platforms, a process requiring precise control, strict adherence to flight regulations, and a deep awareness of wind, glare, and ocean patterns.
Capturing the sequences is far from easy, however.
Reading the water’s texture, anticipating the whales’ next moves, and balancing technical demands all play a part in producing the final cinematic moments.
Aquino says every whale display is a mix of dedication, patience, instinct, and luck, with hours spent on timing, editing, and crafting the rhythm of the coast into a visual story.
Geoffrey said: “The whales were in full display, breaching, tail-slapping, and rolling through the surf.
It’s nature’s version of choreography.
“I was focused on reading the water’s texture, anticipating the next move, and capturing the rhythm of motion against light and horizon.
"All while staying within flight restrictions and maintaining full situational awareness.
“What inspires me is movement not just from whales, but from everything that defines the coastline: boats, beaches, cruise lines, wellness retreats, surf breaks.
"It’s about energy and emotion.
"Whales are simply the most dramatic expression of that. Every whale sequence is the result of skill, patience, and luck.
"When the light, the sound, and the moment all align, it’s pure magic a once-in-a-lifetime frame that speaks to the ocean’s power and grace.”
