The tender love story that became a breakout screen vehicle for Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, 'The Notebook,' will be adapted as a Broadway musical, to be produced by Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutsch in association with Nicholas Sparks.

00:10moving from the screen to the stage.
00:122004's The Notebook, which starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams and was based on the
00:16book by Nicholas Sparks, will be adapted as a Broadway musical to be produced by
00:20Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutch in association with the author.
00:24Indie folk pop artist Ingrid Michaelson is writing the original score.
00:28The film version starred Gosling and McAdams as a young couple who fall in love but are
00:31kept apart by barriers of wealth and class. Their story is recounted years later by an
00:36elderly man, played by James Garner, to Gina Rowlands as a fellow nursing home resident
00:40with dementia. The romantic drama grossed $81 million domestically and an additional
00:45$34.6 million worldwide. A timeline has not yet been established for the stage
00:49adaptation of the film.
00:51When I first heard about The Notebook potentially being turned into a musical, I was
00:55instantly drawn to the idea, said playwright Becca Brunstetter, who is developing the show.
00:59The story hits home for me in two big ways. It takes place in my home state of North Carolina,
01:04and Alzheimer's runs deep in my family.

01:13Meanwhile, Deutch is the founder of recording
01:15Leibelskaboom and Ghostlight Records, as well as SVP of theatrical and catalogue development
01:20for Warner Chappell Music Publishing. And for his part, McCollum's extensive Broadway credits
01:25include the Tony-winning musicals Rent, In the Heights and Avenue Q.
01:30He is currently working with Steven Spielberg on the West Side Story remake and is in
01:34development with Fox Stage Productions on musicals based on The Devil Wears Prada and Mrs. Doubtfire.
