Meghan Trainor joins us inside the Hard Rock Hotel New York to talk about her new song, "Still Don't Care," and her upcoming album, 'Toy With Me.'
Transcript
00:00There's a few songs on this album that I think when I play it for people, there's one song that Jaws drop for.
00:08Can I say names of songs yet?
00:10Yep, right? Yeah. Yeah, they said yeah.
00:12I'm gonna say Shimmer.
00:16This is your Odyssey check-in. We are here at the Hard Rock Hotel, New York with Meghan Trainor.
00:22Hello!
00:22Still Don't Care is wonderful. I love, obviously, the message, the sound.
00:28And how much did you care about selecting the perfect initial single for this project?
00:35Oh, we cared so much.
00:36Yeah.
00:37The next single is a big battle right now. No one has any idea what to go with.
00:41It's all great things because we all love the song so much, but picking the singles is a nightmare.
00:46Yeah.
00:46It is so hard to do that. But my truth right now is the Still Don't Care song.
00:51It's truly how I feel. I can't wait to be 30-something and really not care what people think.
00:58Yeah, yeah.
00:58But at 31, I still did. And I got a lot of comments that made me cry all night long.
01:04And I have to stop and learn how to not give strangers so much power, says my therapist.
01:09And I agree.
01:09Amen.
01:09So I wrote this song about it, and it's helped me a lot.
01:12And I can't wait to start performing it and truly believing it and feeling it.
01:15Is there a song or a lyric or something on this album that you think will surprise fans the most?
01:23Oh, that's a really good question.
01:25There's a few songs on this album that I think when I play it for people, there's one song that Jaws drop for.
01:33Can I say names of songs yet?
01:35Yes. Yep. Right? Yeah.
01:36Yeah, they said yeah.
01:37I'm going to say Shimmer.
01:38Oh, they said no.
01:39Too late.
01:40I said it, Shimmer.
01:40Yes.
01:41There's a song called Shimmer.
01:42Why? Because sonically, is it a departure?
01:44No, it's like if I always call her If Me Too, my song, If I Was You, if she had an older, sexier sister, it's Shimmer.
01:52Oh, I love that.
01:53Maybe younger. Maybe she's Gen Z, but she's a cool girl.
01:56And people freak out.
01:57What's one thing from your childhood that you absolutely want to duplicate for your kids and one thing that you want to do differently?
02:05Oh, my God. Do you have these written down somewhere? How do you? You're so good at this.
02:08Oh, thank you.
02:09One thing I want to do, I want to make family memories like my parents did a really good job at.
02:14We would have like disco nights where my dad would set up the disco lights by himself and we'd have dance parties.
02:20And so now when I see like any kind of lights, like Christmas lights or any disco lights, I get emotional and I love it so much.
02:27So I set up their playroom to have disco lights everywhere.
02:31And I try to do dance parties all the time with them.
02:34They don't dance yet. It's so frustrating.
02:35And then something different.
02:39I'm really trying to, because I heard my mom like not have the best self talk about herself.
02:45She like didn't take a picture for 50 years.
02:47Got you.
02:47So that's where I get my insecurities from for sure.
02:50Yeah.
02:50And I'm trying to rewire my brain and just teach my kids like wake up, look at yourself in the morning and say,
02:55Hi, Riley. I love you, Riley. You're so handsome, Riley.
02:58You know, like self-positive love.
03:00It wasn't a thing when I grew up.
03:02So I want that to be for them.
03:05What's your favorite song that you've written for another artist?
03:10One that's always been special to you.
03:11Oh my goodness.
03:13Sledgehammer by Fifth Harmony is a banger in Forever Will Be.
03:16And I really want to sing it on tour.
03:18I think I should do it.
03:19When I mention it, people are like, yeah, do it.
03:21And they're about to like reunite.
03:23You should just bring the girls out.
03:25I fought for it, my dude.
03:27I said, just give it a minute.
03:28They're going to do it.
03:29Let's bring them on tour.
03:30I think they're too cool for me.
03:31Honestly, they can't open for me.
03:33They're too cool.
03:34Yeah.
03:34Yeah.
03:34Speaking of writing for other artists, you know, Sabrina Carpenter, the.
03:39Oh my God.
03:40It's about to be 10 years for the debut that you worked on.
03:43Yeah.
03:43I mean, what has it been like watching that trajectory of hers?
03:47Of Sabrina?
03:48Oh man, I've been watching her since her first song that I wrote 10 years ago came out.
03:54Can't blame a girl for trying.
03:55I love that song.
03:56I just watched.
03:58I've never watched someone work so hard.
04:00She put in the work.
04:01She did everything that everyone tells us to do.
04:03And I just remember being like, how come it's not clicking for people?
04:07She's perfect.
04:07Like what is going on?
04:09And then it only took one explosion song and then it was out of here.
04:13Yeah.
04:13And I, that people tell, people told me when I was 19, like, it only takes one.
04:18And I was like, what do you mean?
04:19And they're like, it just takes one song.
04:21And all about that bass was my one song.
04:23Absolutely.
04:23We're so excited for the new album, the single, the upcoming tour.
04:27So thank you for taking out the time.
04:29Oh my God.
04:30Thanks for talking about it.
