Codex Gigas is a manuscript was created in the early 13th century. It is the largest extant medieval illuminated manuscript in the world. But how did this book came to be?
00:00Welcome to the True Crime and Mystery Lounge.
00:04Today we talk about a strange manuscript as we immerse in the mysterious world of the Devil's Bible, a.k.a. Codex Gigas.
00:16Our book today could be the only book that was written by a non-human being, and according to the research, it's from the Middle Ages.
00:25The mystery starts with the side of the book, which is 165 pounds, 35 inches long, 20 inches wide, and 10 inches thick.
00:39The outer cover of the book is two pieces of wood and a wooden stake engraved, but the strangest part is that the papers of the book are made of animal skin.
00:51Which, even stranger, that each two papers of the book requires a full skin of a whole animal.
01:03Therefore, to complete the full 310 pages of that book, it took roughly around 150 animals to be skinned.
01:14As for the book itself, it contains some ancient sacred scripts, and some information and practices from the Middle Ages, in addition to some drawings.
01:27The book dates back to the 13th century, and historians say that the book was gifted by monks to other monks, around year 1295, in the area of Bohemia, which is now known as the Czech Republic.
01:46But the book was forgotten.
01:47The book re-emerged, around 1594, by Rudolf II, the Roman Emperor, which was interested in mysterious sayings and magic.
01:59In 1648, the book was taken by the Swedish army to the Royal Palace of Stockholm, after the 30 years of war that they had with the Czech Republic.
02:09In 1878, the book became a property of the Swedish National Library, and is still there, till that day.
02:21But now, let's talk about the mystery of the book.
02:26According to historians, the book was written in the Bohemian era by monks.
02:31Therefore, the contents are mostly a collection of various religious scripts, in Latin.
02:38It contains a copy, from the Bible, from the 5th century, called the Gospel of Vulgata, some texts from the Old Testament,
02:50some Greek historian's scripts, from the 1st century, an ancient encyclopedia, from the 6th century,
02:59some events that happened in the area of Bohemia, a collection of old medical texts,
03:05and some scripts, and some scripts in physics and science.
03:09The book also contains a list of monks and people's names that died in that era, with the dates and their honors.
03:19It also contains a historical record of local events, and the alphabet of Hebrew, Greek, and ancient Bohemian languages,
03:28and magic spells, that was never understood.
03:34It also contains texts related to exorcisms of demons, along with a number of prayers,
03:40that belonged to the Bohemian monks.
03:45It also included many drawings of animals and plants.
03:48But one specific drawing that sparked everything, and it's found on page number 577.
03:58It's a drawing of the devil, with green face, and red split gun, long horns, and sharp nails.
04:08The devil was wearing a royal robe, and he's standing in between two towers.
04:14What no one understood is why having a detailed drawing of the devil, among various religious scripts.
04:23But among the pages of the book, a single name stands out, and it's Hermann the Recluse.
04:31The name is what created the mystery, according to the historians, that the monk broke, the Bohemian monk rose,
04:43and committed unforgivable sins, so they sentenced him to this, by crucifying him.
04:51But before his death, he asked for a final wish, and that is to put all the knowledge he knew in one book,
05:01so mostly only in one night, and if he can do it, so then they would grant his freedom.
05:15That was the night before his death, but he also asked to be left alone, that night, and to be undisturbed.
05:25It's said that the monk was able to summon the devil, by using some spells, only he knew, and he made a deal with the devil.
05:38And the deal was, to send his soul to the prince of darkness.
05:44In return, the devil would write the book for him, so he can stay alive.
05:49The next morning, the book was finished, and the monk was granted freedom, and that's how the book got its name, the devil's Bible.
06:02According to the documentary, that was made by National Geographic, and the scientist, in handwriting, called Michael Gollick,
06:13the book was indeed written, by one person, one personality, very accurate, and no mistakes.
06:21In the same way, from the first, to the last page, without stopping, and without any changes in style,
06:29which is very strange.
06:33According to Michael, in order to this book, to be written by one human being,
06:39the way it is, it will take, roughly, a dedication of 30 years, to get it done,
06:48which would be impossible, considering all the animal skin, that has been used, as pages.
06:56It was also said, that there are 10 missing pages, of that book, that was intentionally shredded,
07:06by the monks, because they could take, spells, on how to summon demons, and some satanic prayers,
07:14so they can prevent anyone, from using them.
07:18So what do you think, was a book written by the devil himself, or is just a myth?
