00:00I do, personally. I'm like, here we go. Partly down.
00:16We're living in an unstable world, and tensions are high.
00:21There's huge consequences, right?
00:23If I get that wrong, it would live with me forever.
00:26The threat of conflict feels very real right now.
00:30And it could affect us all.
00:34Go on, let's go.
00:35I pride myself on having a good mental resilient attitude where nothing's too hard.
00:42These are the Scots.
00:45The Royal Regiment of Scotland and Britain's most deployed infantry.
00:49And they're getting ready to fight whatever battles might lie ahead.
00:53As one battalion trains in Eastern Europe to defend our NATO allies.
00:58Another one is moving to the Med.
01:01Ready to react to conflict if needed.
01:05It can get very violent and things can escalate pretty quickly.
01:10Is that another mess?
01:11Back home.
01:12Ceremonial troops prepare to guard the King.
01:14But behind the pageantry, they need to be battle ready too.
01:18It's frantic.
01:19It's frenzied.
01:20It's ferocious.
01:21Let's go!
01:22Let's go!
01:23Let's go!
01:24But for the troops, it's just another day at the office.
01:27And right!
01:28Right!
01:29Right!
01:30Right!
01:31Right!
01:32Right!
01:33Right!
01:34Right!
01:35The troops are trained to fight against the troops.
01:36Our training every day is training for war.
01:40If you can see what Russia has done in Ukraine, Estonia is right on that front line.
01:44They are our NATO ally.
01:45We are there to protect them.
01:47And HL is effectively to get the green light to go to their positions and wait for the Russians.
01:52this is a large-scale war game is more than just training it's a life-or-death
01:59scenario the deployment phase has taken place now we're in the shaping phase I
02:04mean everyone's ready everyone's set but all plans are good until you get
02:08punched in the face for the troops in Estonia exercise Hedgehog is underway
02:16around 17,000 NATO soldiers from a range of different nations are spread across
02:23a stretch of land around 30 square kilometers and less than 20 miles from
02:29the Russian border the war game is about to begin the Scots are braced for a
02:36simulated attack from the Swedish army who are acting as the enemy in this test
02:42every soldier has a role to play and the reconnaissance team are ahead of the
02:47front line gathering intelligence to feed back to the HQ the information that
02:53sergeant Crawford on the recce platoon send back to their commanders is absolutely
02:57critical that will inform our commanders where the enemy are
03:06where they'd be likely to attack from what weapon systems and vehicles they may have
03:13and an expected time of arrival
03:15when D-Day comes and it's like right now it's live you think as soon as this happens I'm going
03:22to go into fighting however you're at the expense of the enemy force and you don't get the say
03:28and when the enemy is going to attack I am sergeant Kyle Crawford from the 2nd battalion
03:36royal regiment of scotland you said it in your head right maybe five hours from now
03:40five hours comes still not came and you're like right I'm just at the liberty of of whoever's against
03:47me here
03:57Roger right well I'll see you soon see you on the other side remember me
04:04exercise hedgehog is a combined exercise there's all sorts of different units coming together
04:20and practicing so if anything did happen we know that we can work as a whole organization
04:26I'll speak about the military for the rest of my life I'll be one of these old guys in the pub that
04:35everybody's like oh no here's mcgregor coming again he's going to tell us that story he's told
04:39me 50 odd times I'll be that guy
04:48I'm stuart mcgregor and I work at the 2nd battalion the royal regiment of scotland
04:52I've been in the army for 22 years three years that's me done I'm trying to slowly time down if
05:00you know anybody that can slowly time down then let me know for me being in the royal regiment of
05:06scotland is huge one because i'm scottish and two so i wasn't always in infantry but i started at the
05:11rlc which is the royal logistic corps who essentially bring water ammunition rations any equipment that
05:17you need i transferred from there after doing six years the reason why i transferred it was a
05:23operational tour in afghanistan where i worked with scots and it was a great experience
05:31just operating with individuals that spoke and had the same slang as you was great
05:36and just the individuals that are in the scots is what's made me want to transfer
05:40when we deployed we had to establish essentially the battle group headquarters
05:49what's happening mate just a quick check everyone all right yeah everything so far it's quiet so far
05:55BHQ is where the chief of staff sit and all the planning officers when the battle group headquarters
06:01gets established that then allows the fighting troops essentially to do their job a little bit better
06:06the battle group headquarters staff they can kind of coordinate that this HQ building will serve as
06:14the nerve center for the main commanders of the scots regiment
06:21recce platoon's primary job is to identify what's going on at the front line and then feed that back
06:26into BHQ so really good intelligence because they've got eyes on the ground
06:29it's going to be a drama with this window this window's going to be a nightmare
06:36right mate just get us on the comms if any drama's all right
06:42in warfare there's a real risk that drones could spot the location of the HQ
06:47so the scots need to be ready should they come under attack from aircraft and an escape route is essential
06:55what's going to happen clearly we've just moved into here i've noticed at the far end
06:58there's a tunnel that goes into that other building i think what we'll use that for is the key players
07:03within BHQ once we're content that we're getting contacted we'll get them out the back out of that
07:09tunnel clearly we need to go and check it first before we then send the chief of staff in to see
07:13all the stuff through so yeah it's good let's do that now mate
07:18Colossan's normally like a logistical type job there's a lot involved sometimes you'll see staff officers
07:25in there for six seven hours like non-stop just grafting they get so fixated in the whole planning
07:33process that sometimes they forget to eat which is the basics i just need to remind them so that daddy
07:40figure if you like that father figure
07:44trying to get them to bed is actually quite a tough job not only is it them grafting in there but my job
07:50grafting trying to get them to sleep is a nightmare there is a lot of pressure but we don't just go
07:57into the unknown essentially we've gathered intelligence from a lot of different resources
08:07making sure that we've done the planning to the best of our ability will put us in the best position
08:12to then receive the enemy when they start flowing through us
08:22and in his isolated position sergeant crawford is still looking for that enemy ready to radio a
08:28warning back to base once he spots them if i'm lucky and i'm doing my job right i'll see the enemy
08:34before they see me you think that that oncoming attack is going to be the might of armored warfare of
08:42these massive heavy armored vehicles rumbling down the road
08:54the initial contact that you get with the enemy is just a two-man skirmish team trying to find
09:02something within the woods and we call that a meeting engagement and a meeting engagement is
09:06you coming face to face with them and the funny thing is they're just in shock the same way you're
09:11just in shock you come across something in the woods and it looks just like you and it talks just
09:16like you but you're very much on different sides so whoever can get their weapon system up and give
09:21them a lick they win
09:25when you know it's actually going to be happening it's like a switch is switched and actually putting
09:30into practice what you have trained for
09:40after hours of mounting tension suddenly for crawford it's on
09:47in the war game the troops are fighting with blank ammunition it's how they react that's important
09:52and crawford needs to get away and radio details of the enemy's movements over to hq
10:00the information that comes from the reconnaissance platoon gets passed to their headquarters and it's
10:06received in the headquarters tent is uh one zero so a company with their machine guns attached
10:12a two five alpha i can confirm a six nine contact ivy or two five alphas high location how copy
10:27the troops in cataric are prepping for their two-year stint in cyprus where they'll become a regional
10:32support battalion their kits already on its way but the armored vehicles need to be in full working
10:38order before they go
10:46one light out
10:49how are we looking all singing all dancing so far cool on top up okay let's do the lights
10:57we're looking good i am lieutenant laura donovan and i'm a platoon commander in delta company four scots
11:11i have a platoon of 24 soldiers under my command
11:18indicators everything from organizing their training and day-to-day jobs on camp
11:23and then we're going to go to camp
11:26ma'am vehicle good to go happy corporate all singing all dancing with vehicle eyes i'm i'm
11:32i'm kind of happy where we are ready to go to cyprus
11:36give me another flight let's go when they reach cyprus the scots will take over the uk's military
11:42presence in the eastern mediterranean but there's still specific training they need to pass before they head off
11:49being ready to deal with civil unrest is crucial when deploying to the rapid reaction base in cyprus
11:58the region it covers can be highly volatile but most of the jocks have never been faced with a violent
12:04riot before and don't know how to bring one under control so it's time for that to change
12:11hardcore rioters have got head guns on they'll come up that way
12:18only a few of them have actually got any experience with it so the guys that are safety in the high
12:22viz they've been down to do the course which allows them to be safety for this so they've got a little
12:27bit of experience and they'll be on both sides of it but for pretty much everyone here they've done
12:31none of this before so they're excited
12:42so all the battalions that will spend their two years stint out in cyprus will have to be validated
12:47for public order training so that we would be prepared to deal with a civilian unrest should that
12:53be the case when we're there
12:54public order training i would say as much as the war fighting side of the army and infantry is
13:02important as well because of the varying situations that can arise around the world
13:08there'll be a lot of times where it could be rioters or members of the public venting frustration
13:15through violence my name is joshua rankin and i'm a lance corporal i'm in charge of a shield team of three
13:22and i'm receiving orders from the platoon commander who sits behind shield team two his messages are
13:28then passed and it's essentially the shield team commander's responsibility to enact his plan
13:35the training takes place in specially constructed streets with other troops playing the role of
13:41civilians to make it as challenging as possible you're going to get put into a training environment
13:47where it's your friends playing the civilian population when you're going through your cereals
13:53and the public order instructors will basically set up situations that you've got to react to
14:01the threat to the soldiers is immense it's imperative that scots
14:06pass this validation ahead of deploying to cyprus
14:09these exercises known as cereals prepare the soldiers to handle real world unrest
14:23okay so if you are that front team and you see a little bit of an air gap opening up
14:28fucking exploit that okay each cereal or exercise focuses on specific challenges a few different
14:34cereals that will train involve man away what to do if a fellow soldier is taken by the crowd
14:43barricade techniques for dismantling roadblocks set up by rioters
14:48barricade prepare to split
14:56oh yeah that's that room
14:57and a petrol bomber appears this is the drill that you're going to carry out okay
15:27the cereals are designed to be pretty aggressive it may look intense but these practice scenarios
15:44give the jocks the tools they'll need to pass the test and be prepared to deal with public disorder
15:50in the real world
16:04in estonia the enemy have been spotted ahead of the front line and they're advancing fast
16:11as they defend the scots need to hold their ground and repel the oncoming invasion
16:16during the fighting a company will get information and from battle group headquarters and on their
16:24next mission depending on where they are what stage of the battle that they're at
16:29major shepherd is essentially planning so he's the key planner the scheme maneuver we've broken down into
16:35four phases major shepherd will come up with a plan pass it by the ceo and the ceo will be like yeah let's
16:41maybe just adjust that or adjust this and then he'll hand it off to execute that plan our aim
16:47is to push the enemy off into the killing areas to the front and then he'll start the planning for
16:51the next so we're always one step ahead of the enemy essentially we'll exit building one and then
16:56we're going to go on that patrol and make sure we can get an alternate area just in case we need to
17:00move from here um i'll get you on the comms when i leave um if there's any dramas i'll get you on attack
17:05roger yeah happy cheers sir my role within that is not the planning it's just to make sure the
17:12officers the staff officers the brains of the operation essentially are protected the first and
17:17foremost making sure that the protections out from the ground and from the air
17:21the jocks in edinburgh are in the process of the annual spring drills assessment but their first
17:37run through has not gone well i actually can't get over that parade that was fucking dreadful man
17:45the length of the jacket so that looks like it's too small buddy buddy system basics to continue
17:53the regiment's tradition of guarding the king when he's in scotland they'll have to pass a second
17:58inspection from the army's ceremonial headquarters known as the london district but first they have
18:04some down time what's the weather sir wind to be fair when we were there last time the wind
18:10couldn't make up in st ryan remember it blew from every direction we go fly fishing once a week to
18:15how many do you think you're going to catch today
18:20and we started like let's let's get a scoreboard going and like a prize for the winner like 50
18:25pound you know for them to go buy fishing stuff
18:31and we started keeping score the person who catches the most fish for the day wins
18:36sure it's bumped
18:42oh is that a rainbow no brownie mate is it told you today's my day
18:48it's early days mate just because you've caught the smallest fish in the lake bro doesn't mean you're hard
18:51being a jock doesn't have to mean you're scottish scots is home to soldiers from all over the commonwealth
19:02i got a voice note for my bird i need to listen to quickly a voice note for your pup yeah before
19:06the wedding's off you know what i mean i was born in cape town south africa spent most of my life there
19:12until i was probably about 19 or 20 and then came over here uh joined the army who was uh
19:19my grandmother first suggested it when i when i left school i kind of wanted to go a different path
19:24but uh ended up back here anyway 23 ran to the pound um so the money goes a hell of a lot further when
19:31you're taking it back to south africa so yeah that was one of the main reasons as well as the british
19:36armed forces is one of the best in the world i would say and that's kind of why i wanted to try
19:40that over anything else what do you think about going back to south africa oh man i can't wait it's
19:46been what five months five months five months since i got to see my fiance it's hard man but a struggle
19:52man i get to see my fiance twice a year the july summer holidays and then the december christmas
19:57holidays it's incredibly hard to be away for that long you must have a good fiance if she's staying
20:01with you without seeing you for five months oh she's she's an amazing woman not many women
20:05were put up with that with the party fans mate aye what's this going on
20:16it's early days mate it's early days
20:24over in estonia an exercise hedgehog sergeant crawford has spotted the enemy approaching but
20:30while the officers plan their next moves for the jocks living in the trenches a few miles from the
20:35front line the weight continues live in a trench fight in a trench sleep sleep in a trench cuddle
20:47too much
20:51i've left the building sites digging to come back to the army dig you're getting sand in every crevice and
20:59every orifice right is that the right word yeah we've become friends over the last year or so i was
21:05so reserved when i first came in um and he was very not reserved me oh yeah oh yeah i'll speak to
21:14anybody i don't care it's probably the most outgoing person you've ever met in your life one in a million
21:20no you know what i mean yeah we're all there to do the same job like that's what i would say if you're
21:26sound you're sound but if you're a dick you're a dick do you know what i mean it doesn't matter your
21:30background it doesn't matter what sex race nationality fucking political beliefs like if you're a dick
21:36you're a dick but if you're sound you're sound you know what i mean you're going to work with that person
21:40and that's that's how it is we're all there to do the job and get on with it
21:43don't we see when it was like oman or iraq it was a lot drier yeah so it was like you'd get covered in
21:51sand then it would just brush off he had all sticks to you running around getting sweaty all right when
21:57i wiped my ass earlier on it felt like sandpaper mate 80 grit sandpaper right to the bungee nice mate
22:02if you fucking dig in a forest what do you expect to be under trees
22:06fucking mud sand but but that fucking that baffles me i've never seen sand under a tree before in my life
22:12brutal you're going through the shit but somebody out that everybody else is everyone else is
22:16fucking going through it somebody else could be struggling a lot more like you know my shoulder
22:20to fucking pet them up a bit like you remind each other to do something like he'll make my bruise
22:24like yeah really hot chocolate here's a coffee like you just look out for each other do you know what
22:27i mean i love my man's man right so i i was i'd cook him a scoff and he'd cook me a scoff
22:34fucking starving i'm fucking hungry every day i'm getting a carbonara when we get home
22:38carbonara some wine mate do you know what i've missed mate see when i go home my mum makes it
22:43remember i told you about the stories yeah yeah i love it mate right but it's sort of thick mate
22:51but my mum gets mate see these totties mate like they fucking melt in your mouth like a steak mate
22:57my dad built like a barbecue pit in the back garden so he comes home he's got this big weber grill and
23:01he makes like big tomahawk steaks chicken wings and he maninates it overnight see when he makes
23:06brisket and that but obviously see when he makes his cider as well see how he grows his cider
23:11oh unreal man cut the bottles and i can't walk you know oh it's good mate
23:18from the troops in the trenches to the officers in each queue zero yeah understood
23:33all of the scots are waiting for the enemy to show
23:45but for the jocks in caterich the day of the civil unrest assessment is coming up fast
23:51if they're to become the regional support battalion in cyprus it's something they have to pass
23:56that's us all in so quickly tasks you're to clear route blue our mission is to hold in order to
24:04disperse and be prepared to act as reserve major jamie graham is my oc so he is officer commanding
24:12as commander of delta company jamie is in charge of over 100 jocks so what we'll go for push up that
24:19road hard we want to be super aggressive on this one because they're being pretty aggressive we can
24:23we can then tone it down and we can de-escalate from there okay happy good to go happy days
24:41when the aggravation starts to ramp up it'll feel very real
24:49it got quite heated at times i think that does prepare you effectively for actually
24:53if it is to transpire in real life where you've got that experience to deal with big angry rioters
24:59right right back and double in that's fucking go boys
25:03it's not exactly an enemy in that situation but the civilian population that are going to be causing
25:09you the aggravation it can get very violent and things can escalate pretty quickly
25:15as soon as the action kicks in in my role as platoon commander it becomes very real faced with rioters
25:26laura and the jocks have to protect themselves as well as bystanders while calming the situation down
25:32and bringing the unrest to an end to prepare yourself mentally for this type of training i think you just
25:38have to treat it like any other that you're doing in the army we've all got like a serious um kind of
25:44headstrong mentality when it comes to these things where you know we could be having a laugh and a joke
25:50you know one minute before we go out there but as soon as you have stepped out onto that trail and
25:56you're advancing towards a party of angry rioters or an angry mob like it is like it switches like right away
26:12i will always be behind the second shield team and that allows me to kind of have enough tactical
26:20awareness and assess the situation so from that angle i can see what's going on i can make those
26:24decisions and i'm not at risk of being taken just when all seems to be going well the jocks have made
26:43a critical mistake my main point i think is at the low the lowest level is head strikes they need to chill
26:54out if there's any more of that we won't pass this validation so no more head strikes anybody who
26:59does commit a head strike will have received a direct order not to do it okay i think the most
27:03challenging aspect of it was just i think like just maintaining the discipline and keeping boys in
27:09line they need to switch their mindset and because you are getting validated here yeah it's not about
27:14just a validation piece it's about showing up and be here right on this exercise where do we strike
27:20them legs and where else arms right okay chest arse whatever don't be hitting them in the head they're
27:27our own blokes yeah and you're hurting them so stop doing it all right it's ridiculous throughout the day
27:35we were getting numerous different bits of feedback from the like directing staff who were watching over
27:41us um and it just faded through things like you know showing too much aggression here or remembering
27:49where to strike with the civilian population let's let's eliminate this right now any strikes with this
27:55button yeah waste based on happy he's doing the shield so moving the shield away to strike him with that
28:03so you would never strike him in the head so if you're gonna use this button you hit him from waist down
28:07make sense yeah so that means we wouldn't get any more head strikes we will be good green happy with
28:12that happy enough cheers thank you
28:19we've now got like an hour's break yes i will tell you but just let the boys chill out and calm down
28:23for a bit before they go into the next one
28:24having already failed the spring drills once nerves are high for the london district inspection
28:39they will decide whether the scots are up to standard to be this year's royal guard when the
28:44king comes to balmoral near balita for the summer the gsm kind of sets the tone for what the final
28:51inspection is going to be you won't let anything slide what do you put in his hoofs to make him
28:55shiny the standards and discipline that we display whilst on ceremonial duties and on parade are the
29:02standards and discipline we expect when we're in the battlefield
29:11the pressure is on to get it right for your superiors and for your peers
29:21good morning sir balaclava company the fifth battalion the royal redwood scotland
29:26is formed up and awaiting your inspection sir may have your leave to carry on sir please
29:44when you're the one who drops the ball i mean and it happens to everyone there's always a time
29:48where you'll be the one who's who's dropped the ball for the company i mean it's it's quite gutting
29:53you do feel terrible and uh depends on who your friends are they don't let you forget it do they
29:58no you hold on to that reputation for a little while and you make sure not to do it again
30:05your headdress is a bit low or does it feel strange strange sir because it's like two sizes too small
30:15i'm just waiting for him to get my size buck and stocky fluffy fat and fat yeah i think there's
30:21probably a general point about fluff i know everything we wear attracts fluff including
30:27between what we're wearing a perfect example of headdress without any fluff so it can be done there
30:34so it can be done you definitely do get annoyed at them picking up tiny detail but it's that's part of
30:41the job yeah it's just little things like buttons not been facing up the right way which move when
30:46you're marching so you can't really help it but they're going to pick up anyway so it's just like
30:51trying to stay as rigid as possible while you're marching yep guard of order this time the jocks
31:06have smashed it i haven't yet any pickup points other than uh incredibly minor stuff he seemed very
31:14happy with the presentation of the boys and their drill capabilities right morning troops just a
31:24really quick thank you really just to say thank you for all your hard work over the last two weeks
31:28i know spring jewels is a bit of a challenge it's a lot of time in our ceremonial kit and it's really
31:33a lot of time looking at that minute detail and just getting that attention to detail right and again
31:39your improvement over the last two weeks has been phenomenal people forget in london how good we
31:46are up here as a little tradition we'll all get a gas support now and we'll toast the regiment
31:54gentlemen to the regiment
31:55the troops in the trenches are awaiting instruction but the enemy are on the move and could strike at
32:13any time so for the jocks the night patrols are essential and they take shifts to give others a
32:20chance to rest before the fighting kicks off night patrolling especially being an infantry battalion is
32:34key because a lot of the enemy forces don't have night vision so we have the upper hand straight away
32:38we are quite effective at night just with the capability that we have so when you've lost
32:43left and your own stag in there and you fucking hear a noise what the fuck was that
32:56gives you a wee bit of life than it but there is a wee bit of eerie moments because you just sat there
33:00waiting and you can hear people cutting about and you're like oh fuck like
33:13you're like oh
33:43The orders have come through. It's time.
33:46The moment the jocks spot the enemy, everything they've trained for will be put to the test.
33:56Time to wake up, son.
33:59It's 25 past five. Time to get up.
34:03Good morning, Bigot. How are we?
34:06Not bad.
34:07One more now for this. One more now for this. One more now for this. One more now for this.
34:17Just a boy.
34:18Just a girl.
34:20Gonna make an angle on the heels.
34:24We have primary, secondary and tertiary positions.
34:37We'd put people out in the primary position and then we would defend from there.
34:42We would just keep an eyes out for the enemy movements.
34:44Just having comms back to our command point.
35:12and we'll be in the middle of a second.
35:15We've got a quest for this.
35:18We've got a quest for this.
35:20We've got a quest for this.
35:22What's up, mate?
35:23What's up there is?
35:24They're going to fucking...
35:25They're flanking down to the left-hand side of the platoon.
35:26We're just waiting to go and bolster up.
35:27Happy or not?
35:28Happy, is there anyone staying here or are we all going to wait?
35:31Happy.
35:32We all three of us abandon this position.
35:34We'll wait for them to come through in a corner.
35:36It's time for the jocks to show the enemy.
35:41to show the enemy what they're made of.
36:07Then as soon as something does happen, it's just everything's like...
36:10...cales they close in.
36:12Cales they fucking down that one, man.
36:13Yeah, let's go.
36:26Yep, so I need you to fucking bounce forward.
36:29See where people are moving in the distance?
36:31Yeah, I've seen.
36:32I'm just gonna fucking roll through there.
36:33Right. Happy?
36:34Happy.
36:35Roger. Right, move.
36:40What's I saying? Silent, violent, silent.
36:42Yes.
36:44Stop it!
36:46Stop it!
36:48Stop it!
36:49So when we come into contact with the enemy, it does seem like it's a bit crazy, a bit
36:54carnage, but believe it or not, it is controlled carnage.
36:56The troops are up against an army of Swedish soldiers and coming under heavy fire.
37:02They need to push them back so not to lose ground.
37:03And as they're firing with blank ammunition for this exercise, it's the NATO referees that
37:08decide who gets hit.
37:09Get back in, mate.
37:25to decide who gets hit.
37:27Run, get us it back in, mate!
37:31Right, let's go.
37:44Now you're fucking dead, you cunt!
37:50Right, go.
37:55I'm fucking right, you're all dead!
38:05You're all dead, you're all fucked!
38:13In Cateric, the Scots are also being tested.
38:17They're up against a mob of fellow squaddies acting as rioters.
38:21It's the crucial test of their civil unrest training
38:24and senior British army officials will be assessing their performance.
38:29Right, that's us all in, and not a huge amount of changes.
38:32We know that there's a barricade on route which blocks the road to vehicles,
38:37so if we're going to be pushing through that,
38:39we'll need to clear that barricade so we can allow vehicle movement through.
38:41The most likely course of action for enemies
38:43is that they continue to target UK forces,
38:44so they're both currently angry with us.
38:46Fucking moon, then!
38:48The most dangerous course of action is that they then turn on each other,
38:51because then we've got the opportunity for some really violent unrest.
38:54If that does become the case, we'll move into a separation drill,
38:57so bear that one in mind.
38:58Roger, that's control aggression, right?
39:01So, yes, the people will be aggravated down there,
39:03but they need to have their control within themselves as well, right?
39:07So you, the team leader, they need to fucking keep an eye on that, right?
39:09Make sure people are not going overboard with what they're doing with the C-pops.
39:14Everyone happy?
39:16Are there any questions at this stage?
39:20Nope.
39:21Cool.
39:23You need to stop antagonising the civis.
39:26We're a professional unit.
39:27We're there to restore public order, not to have a scrap.
39:31I completely agree with that point.
39:32You've got to remember the context of why we're doing public order.
39:34Your job is to make sure that you're maintaining public order.
39:37You're not the part of the disorder.
39:39Happy?
39:44Yeah, yeah, I get it.
39:46When everything's carnage and the civis pop are down there
39:49and it's all kicking off, it can become confusing, but...
39:59All right, I'm just going to make sure you're all in.
40:00Shield team one.
40:03Two.
40:03Three, one, three, three.
40:05Three's are after that.
40:05Move up to green and blue spot.
40:07Two.
40:08Avert!
40:12Avert!
40:13Avert!
40:14Get tight, get tight.
40:16Lock is shining.
40:17Spread, splat!
40:18And splat!
40:21This team helping shift this stuff.
40:23You grab it off and as soon as it comes through, yeah?
40:24Three's are after, you're a bit ahead of three, three, son.
40:30Shield team three, very fast!
40:34Advance!
40:35Get through them, get through them, get through them.
40:37Three, three, alpha, three, zero, make sure you hold out that junction of it.
40:45Who the fuck is you?
40:46Yeah!
40:47Yeah!
40:47Yeah!
40:48Yeah!
40:48Yeah!
40:49Yeah!
40:49Yeah!
40:50Yeah!
40:50Yeah!
40:51Yeah!
40:51Yeah!
40:52Yeah!
40:52Yeah!
40:53Yeah!
40:53Yeah!
40:54Yeah!
40:54Three, two, one, alpha, uh, wide of factions now, fighting with each other, red spot, one of it.
41:02Three's alpha, watch it.
41:03Conditions met.
41:04Prepare for advance!
41:05Can you get the dogs from there up to 3-2, please?
41:08Yeah.
41:093-2, dog.
41:10Never hold this gun.
41:123-2, we're doing split!
41:13Woo!
41:13Woo!
41:14Woo!
41:14Woo!
41:15Woo!
41:15Woo!
41:16Woo!
41:17Woo!
41:17Woo!
41:18Woo!
41:19Woo!
41:19Woo!
41:20Woo!
41:21Woo!
41:21Woo!
41:22Woo!
41:23Woo!
41:23Woo!
41:24Woo!
41:24Woo!
41:25Woo!
41:25Woo!
41:26Woo!
41:26Woo!
41:27Woo!
41:273-0, this is 3-0 alpha, that's the separate affected.
41:31They're continuing to hold.
41:33Hold!
41:34Hold!
41:353-0 alpha, it looks like factions are dispersing, waiting for the wall to cool down.
41:403-0 alpha, this is 3-2 alpha, still about 15 to 20 writers on position, isn't it?
41:453-0 alpha, roger.
41:47Hey, you fucking silly as well!
41:49Yeah!
41:50I think, regardless of gender, it's very important to be confident in your role.
41:53Erm...
41:54But I'm aware that I stand out.
41:56Right, where's your boss?
41:57Come at the man.
41:58The boss.
41:59It's me, I'm the boss.
42:00If you're looking for the boss.
42:02I'm very thick skinned, I don't let things get to me.
42:04Right, where the fuck's your crap?
42:05What are you doing here?
42:06We're just here to secure this location until you disperse.
42:09You!
42:10The fuck you look like?
42:11Yeah, I know.
42:12Tell this fucking marble to fuck off.
42:14You have to be assertive and you have to let your voice carry.
42:20That's something that can be a little bit challenging, especially when things get escalated.
42:25Look at you, he's fucking frozen.
42:28You and me, you're fucking much bigger than me, come on.
42:31I like to take a step back sometimes just to kind of look at the bigger picture of things before making a decision.
42:36I don't have to shout to be heard.
42:38I would rather observe a situation and then deal with it intelligently rather than letting my emotions get the best of me.
42:44If you guys start to disperse, we don't have a reason to be here.
42:47So why don't you tell your guys to leave?
42:48One boy's fucking loving that house thing there.
42:50So they can't go back there then in house.
42:52You cunts are traipsing up and doing his fucking driveway.
42:55He can't even get back in his own fucking house.
42:56As soon as I...
42:57Shut up, I'm talking.
42:58You're listening.
42:59And fucking everybody else has got to fuck off just cause you've kept up with a plan.
43:02Get a fucking shake of yourself.
43:04My boys will bite here so you fuck off so we can get back in their house.
43:07How far down the road's his house?
43:08Well, a fucking house right there.
43:10So that's what?
43:1110 metres.
43:12So if I give you 10 metres, I'll take these back.
43:14That's going to bring the situation down, yeah?
43:16Yeah.
43:17Happy.
43:18Withdraw 10 metres.
43:22Bye bye.
43:23Bye bye.
43:26Right, hold.
43:29These are Alpha, this is 3-2 Alpha.
43:31That's all rioters on our position, now dispersed over.
43:333-2 Alpha, Roger.
43:34Keep holding here and then we'll start moving back once I get the go ahead.
43:39Okay, 3-2 move now.
43:403-2, withdraw!
43:42Keep coming back.
43:43Right, keep moving.
43:44Roger, you can withdraw a bit faster than that.
43:46Okay, Laura.
43:473-2, let's move quickly now.
43:48Get them back through.
43:49Alright, keep moving quicker, let's go!
43:50Zero, 3-0 Alpha.
43:51That's us complete.
43:52Appatoon sergeants close in.
43:53Good drills.
43:54I think it's important that the gender perspective isn't put on everything that I do.
44:01And that's not the narrative that I want of my career.
44:02I chose to do this job because I wanted to do this job, I wanted to be part of the Royal
44:08Regiment of Scotland.
44:09Royal Regiment of Scotland.
44:10In each of those situations, I think I've managed to come across the way that is important that
44:18I'm here to do my job.
44:19It doesn't matter that I'm a woman.
44:20At the end of the day, I'm a person like everyone else you've ever worked with.
44:24I'm going inside for this debrief.
44:33So it's gone from strength to strength the whole time, which is absolutely great.
44:43You couldn't ask for a bit of chalk up, you're actually changing the doctrine through your
44:51you're actually changing the doctrine through your output.
44:56We received positive feedback from the directing staff on our evaluation phase and we took
45:02the feedback on board from the first serial, which wasn't really as good as what we were
45:09hoping it was going to be at first, but once we took the feedback on board and put that
45:13into practice, the second and third serial that were conducted in the evaluation were
45:18to our superior standard.
45:19It makes you feel like what you've done has been worthwhile, and I would say not just
45:23for myself and other platoon commanders and company commander, but even at the lowest level
45:28like for the jocks to know that the training that they've done is very rewarding.
45:32The skills that I've learned would be ready to be implemented in a real life situation.
45:37All of our boys would be comfortable in doing that in a real life scenario, which is basically
45:41a testament to the training that we've conducted over the last few weeks.
45:44Troops really, really quickly, ten times better than the one we did before.
45:49Really impressed with the way it went.
45:50Thank you very much.
45:51Fingers crossed.
45:52We don't get the opportunity to do public order in Cyprus.
45:54We're doing other stuff, but we're all set for it.
45:55Thanks.
45:56In Estonia, Maka and the jocks on the front lines have come under heavy fire, but they're
46:11holding ground.
46:12Of course it's in the silent silent silent silent.
46:13He's dead!
46:14Stop it!
46:15Stop it!
46:16Stop it!
46:17Stop it!
46:18Stop it!
46:19Stop it!
46:20PUSH DOWN!
46:24STOP IT!
46:37Yeah, what's got?
46:41He's a lotter!
46:51Let's go!
46:55Watch your left! Watch your left!
46:58On the move! On the move!
47:00On the move!
47:01Go, go!
47:12Here, I'll pick you up!
47:14Do you think?
47:15Do you think?
47:17Do you think?
47:18It just kicks in, like, what you should be doing.
47:20Obviously, two ICs, corporals take control of what you're doing.
47:25You're feeding back up to the net, like, your comms,
47:27through your platoon commander.
47:29He's telling you, like, this is what I want.
47:31What I want.
47:35Care see?
47:36McMeetown!
47:37Hey!
47:38Small arms fire!
47:39Location!
47:40Run to Cabo's position!
47:42Oh, fuck!
47:43Boss, care see?
47:44I might ride her down!
47:45At last no position!
47:47Hey, two casualties!
47:48Yeah, I see!
47:49It's the next one!
47:50Sir, what am I doing with the two casualties?
48:01I pride myself on having a good mental resilient attitude where nothing's too hard.
48:07A 2-1-2-5 confirmed ETA, my location over.
48:10A gunshot wound left arm.
48:13Seven minutes out.
48:15The NATO referees have allocated a number of jocks as casualties,
48:20and given them details of their simulated injuries.
48:23Crawford has been ordered to assist those who've been injured close to the front line.
48:30You're always going to take casualties.
48:32However, it's how you deal with those casualties,
48:35how they can stop that bleeding,
48:37how they can deal with that catastrophic bleed,
48:39how they can assess the casualty and send up the information that,
48:43now if there's casualties,
48:45that's when you'll start to report upwards to myself.
48:48We'll come to extract that casualty.
48:52If we do need to get to somebody fast,
48:54we can rally through the tree lines,
48:56quickly manoeuvre your quad by getting back on and then fucking off,
49:00and you can be in and out of there rapid.
49:03A casualty has occurred.
49:04You're put into the categories of either T1,
49:07which means the worst possible state the casualty could be in.
49:10He is a catastrophic bleed.
49:11He needs priority care.
49:13We need to get this casualty the fuck out of there.
49:15T2, which is lower down on the priority.
49:18However, he is still a priority.
49:20We still need to get him out.
49:21Yep, or T3, which is walking wounded.
49:23A 2-1-2-5, my callsign at CAS exchange point.
49:27Now break.
49:28From the point of wounding,
49:29I then need to get told where that casualty is,
49:32what's wrong with that casualty,
49:34and what are you doing about it?
49:35A 2-5, alpha continuing.
49:37Once you are at my location,
49:39a one man plus CAS to me,
49:41remainder push out for protection.
49:43How copy?
49:44Now I'll then spin up my chain of command,
49:45and I'll then let them know.
49:47Roger.
49:48For SA, you are figures 350 metres away from me now.
49:51Over.
49:52This is what's happening,
49:53this is what I'm doing about it.
49:54Close.
49:55Behind the scenes,
49:56we're all tooling up,
49:57so the medics will get ready,
49:58the field ambulances will get ready.
50:02300 metres.
50:03And they can get their life saving,
50:05and prolong life.
50:07Right, happy days in here, Indra.
50:11Right, let's go.
50:12Right, take a seat, Matt.
50:14Right, let's go.
50:15Back with me.
50:16Short card empty.
50:17Yep.
50:18Over the next car.
50:19Okay.
50:20Gunshot wound on the left arm.
50:21Yep.
50:22So the boys have put a first field dressing on an FFD.
50:26Gunshot wound, lower left arm at 10.47 am.
50:29Happy.
50:30They've perceived it to be a catastrophic bleed,
50:32therefore they've applied another one.
50:34From here, all the signs look good,
50:36you look stabilised,
50:37as we're going to load you up onto the quad,
50:38and we're going to get you back to that cas exchange point.
50:40You don't want the pain...
50:41Is the pain alright, Matt?
50:42Yeah.
50:43One to five, what is it?
50:44Five being the worst you've ever received,
50:45one's a stub toe?
50:46Three.
50:47Three, that's fine.
50:48Good stuff.
50:49Indra, start sanitising his kit,
50:50get it back in the quad.
50:51Once the kit's in the back of the quad,
50:52that's when we'll move the casualty onto there.
50:54So what we can do is pull one man in,
50:56and start helping you do that.
50:57Happy?
50:58Yeah.
50:59Yeah.
51:00I'll take his ammunition,
51:01but I'll keep his personal rifle with him.
51:12Okay, three minutes, I want away from here.
51:14Andy, you happy?
51:16I'm going to be alright, brother.
51:17You good?
51:18Yeah.
51:19Right, let's go.
51:20Get on.
51:24Crawford must get the most serious of the casualties
51:25out of the danger zone in his trailer.
51:27But it's up to the jocks on the ground
51:29to triage the walking wounded.
51:30So it does rely on the soldiers, left and right.
51:34This soldier is 18-year-old, come from the arse end of Glasgow.
51:39He's gone through 24, 25 weeks of basic training,
51:42learning how to kill somebody the most effective way.
51:46And then you're flipping on its head.
51:47And then you're like, right, you need to now save your mucker's life
51:49with a small set of skills that somebody's taught you in critical care,
52:01in almost trauma, trauma medicine.
52:03And as you've seen from Afghanistan and forward conflicts,
52:07the boys make it work.
52:08And that sums up, in my head, how amazing that jocks are.
52:20How amazing that these young men, that are almost sacrificing their lives,
52:24are willing to do not just for their country,
52:26but to do for their muckers left and right.
52:28All of a sudden, there's another attack.
52:31All of a sudden, there's another attack.
52:43He's dead!
52:44Dead!
52:45Dead!
52:46I fucking already swung you down here!
52:47You're fucking dead!
52:53You're gonna die, you shit god!
52:54I'm fucking out of here, please.
52:55Right, put your cash on.
52:56What's your cash?
52:57What's wrong?
52:58Tell me, read it.
52:59Fucking read it.
53:00Fucking, bullet wound left elbow.
53:01What?
53:02Bullet wound left elbow.
53:03Right, self fucking, self assist.
53:06Self assist, get your fucking ACBs on.
53:08Get a fucking tunicate on you boys.
53:10You can both walk.
53:13Right, we'll sell tea, we'll get back to the fucking MDA.
53:17What we'll do is we'll just tack back,
53:19and then we'll go through there, alright?
53:20You just get yours out.
53:22I know.
53:23Right.
53:24That's the only dollar fucking 15, mate.
53:25Fuckin' up.
53:28Just fucking the right one, mate.
53:29Fuckin' it, pick off, mate.
53:32Babe, did you like that for what?
53:34Oh, just come in.
53:35Yeah, we saw them.
53:36We saw them.
53:37I saw them fucking five times they come in.
53:39They are the odds.
53:40the NATO assessors are taking it all in
53:49self-treatment, yeah
53:51did you like that?
54:02yeah, it was good mate
54:03right, get your helmet on
54:05and then we're going to fuck off
54:08get your helmets on mate, you're still in a fucking fire thing
54:15nah, we're cads
54:16oh you're cads, right, let's go then
54:18use two on me
54:20right, they both are cads, I'm taking them back, I'm extracting back to my MDA
54:23happy with that?
54:24boys, tactics are real, the tactics side, they're real real for that
54:29I'm just, I'm just making you aware so I don't get fucked
54:33what I've done there was, I've walked in
54:36they've not turned around so I've just went, fuck it, full auto, there's four of them
54:39I've took them all out
54:40all that platoon to the left of you are now dead, yeah?
54:44all that platoon, the Estonians, which have come from the left, have now come dead
54:45no hard feelings, we're both dead probably, right, no hard feelings
54:49hey, good, yeah
54:50go them off
54:51I was fucking right, I fucking smoked them
54:53right mate
54:56it's being decent or that?
54:58yeah, to your fair
55:06nine times out of ten, common sense will prevail in those situations
55:14you can be trained up to a very high standard within the combat side
55:20and you can be trained up to a very high standard within the medical side
55:23common sense will prevail in a lot of it
55:26nothing is going to be exactly by the book
55:29tensions have reached boiling point in the war game
55:36news of the heavy fighting has reached Stu
55:40who is defending the battle group headquarters
55:42hey, copy, we'll push 20 metres into here, mate
55:46once you hit the track
55:47I need you to head north, yeah
55:49and just hand drill this track all the way up
55:51just go firm and push into the left-hand side, mate
56:07so if we push in
56:09see if we can get a net entry
56:10in that way
56:11instead of coming straight across the road
56:13what we could maybe do is go across
56:15and then push south
56:21there's huge consequences, right?
56:27because if
56:27battle group headquarters
56:29is getting taken out
56:30and when I say taken out
56:31I mean destroyed by enemy capabilities
56:34then we're in a pretty bad place
56:41there's a lot of pressure
56:43if I get the whole force protection wrong
56:45then absolutely it's...
56:46yeah, it would live with me forever
56:49next time
56:50on the Troops
56:53I know fucking boys that are nuts
56:56they're not afraid of anything
56:57but they're fucking brown soldiers
57:01from start to finish
57:02it was effectively just a huge scrap
57:04let's go, let's go, let's go
57:11I do it!
57:19that's a ritual
57:30there's plenty of darkness
57:31by and tell me
57:32but as they're good
57:32위해서
57:33that's in a home
57:34and the natural language
57:35and even the natural language
57:36that rah- travelling
57:37is the issue for people
57:39that show up
57:40this meaning we're talking about
57:40to hear from other people
57:41at the point of this
57:43that we're taking
57:43and bringing up
57:44all the people
57:45in the toward
57:46say that works
57:47as well
