The Giant of Marathon (Italian: La battaglia di Maratona) is a 1959 international co-production sword and sandal film, loosely based on the Battle of Marathon. It was directed by Jacques Tourneur and Mario Bava. It starred Steve Reeves as Phillipides.

Plot: The story is set in 490 BC, the time of the Medic Wars, during which Persian armies sweep through the Ancient world. Having brought home to Athens the Olympic victor's laurel crown, Phillipides becomes commander of the Sacred Guard, which is expected to defend the city-state's liberty, a year after the expulsion of the tyrant Hippias.

News breaks that the vast army of Darius, the Persian King of Kings, is marching on Greece, hoping that its internal division will make its conquest a walk-over. Theocrites instructs Miltiades to hold back the Sacred Guard to defend the temple of Pallas after a likely defeat, and proposes instead to negotiate terms with Darius, but is told an alliance with Sparta could save the Hellenic nation.

00:01:30I proclaim you, Philippides of Athens, the champion of these Olympic Games.
00:01:55May you thank the gods for having given you the laurel wreath of victory.
00:02:05Four years hence, we shall gather at the Eternal Flame for the next Olympic Games.
00:02:11Two years hence, we shall gather at the Eternal Flame for the next Olympics.
00:02:41To thee, divine Athena, to thee I consecrate the laurels of Olympia.
00:03:01As thou hast protected me, goddess, protect Athens, which bears thy name.
00:03:12Today is a day for celebration.
00:03:15Philippides has brought Athens the laurels of the Olympic Games.
00:03:19Now he returns to his post in the ranks of Athens' sacred god.
00:03:24We must never forget that the people of Athens decreed only a short year ago the exile of the tyrant Hippaeus and have forever banished dictatorship.
00:03:34To you, valorous Philippides, and to your companions of the sacred gods, the Athenians appoint you the custodians of their liberty.
00:03:44I am not afraid of death, Miltiades, and hope we shall never have to fight for liberty.
00:03:54But we live in a democracy.
00:03:57And if there's war, then every citizen, every citizen will be a soldier.
00:04:02To you, sir, commander of the military forces of our city.
00:04:10And to you, Crucis, our beloved leading citizen and head of the Council of Athens.
00:04:15I ask in the name of all my companions that Philippides be made commander of the sacred gods.
00:04:30Bravo, Philippides.
00:04:33You're a popular man today.
00:04:35I, too, make you the custodian of my liberty.
00:04:39Theocritus, I'm just a peasant.
00:04:43The gods gave me strength.
00:04:45But they gave you something even more precious.
00:04:47Intelligence.
00:04:49Be sure you make use of it.
00:04:52The sun sinks in splendor, red as blood, bringing the fearsome blackness of the night.
00:05:00While the desperate trojans pray to all the gods above, hoping to live till the dawn.
00:05:09Go on, Andromeda.
00:05:10Read us the passage about the Great War.
00:05:12No, read us the story about Paris and Helen.
00:05:15Read, Andromeda.
00:05:16Whatever you like.
00:05:18Then I shall read you of Paris and Helen.
00:05:20Oh, wonderful.
00:05:21I always cry when I hear it.
00:05:27He's my father.
00:05:28I shall read it later.
00:05:29Bruce, your daughter doesn't seem to love a future husband.
00:05:41You're wrong, Theocritus.
00:05:42He is wrong, isn't he, Andromeda?
00:05:44You said it for me.
00:05:47You already know the use of double meanings, Andromeda.
00:05:51Perhaps your father should not have promised you to me when we were children.
00:05:55You might want to marry someone else.
00:05:58You young people have strange ideas.
00:06:00In my day, we wouldn't have dared to argue about whom our parents had chosen for us to marry.
00:06:05Well, with that, I leave you.
00:06:07Andromeda.
00:06:09Think over what your father said.
00:06:16Philippides will be a dangerous opponent for us.
00:06:18He's a friend of Miltiades, and he's bullheaded like all our peasants.
00:06:21No, Philippides is not a mere peasant.
00:06:24He is a man who loved the soil, only because he doesn't know anything better.
00:06:28We will show him how good life can be.
00:06:33And he'll be one of us.
00:06:35What do you mean?
00:06:37If we control the sacred guard, we could easily control the whole city of Athens.
00:06:41That is what Hippias in exile suggested we do.
00:06:44Philippides has to join us.
00:06:46Otherwise, he'll be done away with.
00:06:47Theocritus.
00:06:51You know I share your ideals, and those of Hippias.
00:06:55I promised you my daughter.
00:06:56But I refuse to be involved in bloodshed.
00:06:59I refuse.
00:07:00Oh, Crucis.
00:07:02I don't want Philippides removed.
00:07:05I want him with us.
00:07:07To our ideals.
00:07:18Oh.
00:07:19You frighten me.
00:07:21Is hitting me part of the game?
00:07:23No.
00:07:23And losing a ball in a tree isn't part of the game, either.
00:07:29It's there.
00:07:31I was trying to knock the ball out of the tree.
00:07:36It is not too easy to do.
00:07:42Want to try?
00:07:42That wasn't so hard.
00:07:58How do you play this game?
00:08:03You throw the ball as far as possible.
00:08:06Like this.
00:08:06Was that all right?
00:08:13No, that was too far.
00:08:19You're as beautiful as a statue of a goddess.
00:08:21Why don't you like me?
00:08:29I know you.
00:08:31You are Philippides.
00:08:32Philippides.

00:08:41We will meet again.
00:08:43Do you know the temple on the road to Piraeus?
00:08:45I know it very well.
00:08:47What are you talking about?
00:08:48He wants to see you again.
00:08:49He is just being kind.
00:08:52You're wrong.
00:08:53I really want to.
00:08:58Come on.

00:21:44You don't even know my name.
00:21:46Does it matter?
00:21:49I think that I love you.
00:21:56Don't you believe me?
00:21:59It's no use.
00:22:00My future's been decided.
00:22:02You must never see me again.
00:22:05Listen.
00:22:06I won't give you up if you tell me one thing.
00:22:10Say that you could love me.
00:22:15No.
00:22:16You mustn't even hope it would be useless.
00:22:18Please, forget me.
00:22:21Anyhow?
00:22:23It is.
00:22:23Yes, sir.
00:22:24The story is so small to you.
00:22:25It is a thing.
00:22:26I'm going to forget any food.
00:22:27What?
00:22:27I don't know.
00:22:29It's a matter with you.
00:22:29It is.
00:22:29Well,
00:22:31it is within the line.
00:22:31Your name, can't you tell me?
00:23:01Do I surprise you?
00:23:29I know you would never have come to see me.
00:23:31How did you get in?
00:23:33I don't have much trouble making men do what I want them to do.
00:23:37But not Philippides.
00:23:40You're wrong.
00:23:41I'm glad you came.
00:23:43I don't believe you.
00:23:50No, not like that.
00:23:52You must never kiss me like that, Philippides.
00:23:55Kiss me when your anger has left you.
00:23:57There's no anger in me.
00:23:59I have no love.
00:24:01Don't worry, I know you don't love me.
00:24:04It's too much to ask for, I'm aware of that.
00:24:06But I want to make you happy.
00:24:09I wish it were as easy as you seem to think.
00:24:12Before I met you, I had no need of love.
00:24:15But now I do.
00:24:16I love you.
00:24:18I need you so much.
00:24:19All you need is to get what you want.
00:24:23You're cruel.
00:24:26Philippides, time to relieve the guard.
00:24:28I have to go.
00:24:30Goodbye, Caris.
00:24:30That's enough.
00:24:57I invited him here so we could convince him.
00:25:03Convince Philippides.
00:25:04Might as well try to convince Miltiades.
00:25:07How do you suggest we go about it?
00:25:08You said you were the expert.
00:25:10Every man has his price.
00:25:12Some way or other.
00:25:13I hate these intrigues.
00:25:16Ippias is returning from exile.
00:25:18Soon we'll be able to act.
00:25:20The people are with us.
00:25:22But the sacred guard could ruin everything if it were against us, Crucis.
00:25:26Well then, you have an idea?
00:25:29Of course.
00:25:30And it's a beautiful one.
00:25:33What is it, Theocrates?
00:25:35I'll tell you later.
00:25:36Don't worry.
00:25:40You sent for me, Father?
00:25:42Yes.
00:25:43We're having an important guest, my dear.
00:25:45I want you to dine with us today.
00:25:47A very important guest, Andromeda.
00:25:52Very.
00:25:53A friend of yours?
00:25:54Not yet.
00:25:56But he soon may be one.
00:25:59What is his name?
00:26:01He'll tell you himself.
00:26:02There he is.
00:26:06Philippides is here.
00:26:18Welcome to my home, Philippides.
00:26:20Your presence here is an honor.
00:26:21So is your invitation.
00:26:24This is my daughter.
00:26:27Who is to become my wife.
00:26:35It seems you already know each other.
00:26:37Yes.
00:26:38We may have met.
00:26:40But without really knowing each other.
00:26:43As it happens in a dream sometimes.
00:26:46If I had ever met you,
00:26:48even in a dream,
00:26:49I would remember.
00:26:51I don't understand a word of what you're talking about.
00:26:54The table is set.
00:26:55Be seated.
00:26:56Music!
00:26:57Music is excellent for the digestion,
00:26:59if you please.
00:27:00Find thee the pleasures of wine,
00:27:10and drown the sorrows of life.
00:27:13Find thee the pleasure of company,
00:27:16and know the beauty of life.
00:27:17What is it, Philippides?
00:27:23I'm afraid you're not having a very good time.
00:27:25On the contrary,
00:27:26I'm having a wonderful time.
00:27:28Counsel in session?
00:27:33At this hour?
00:27:35Surprising?
00:27:35They must have an important reason.
00:27:38I'm very sorry,
00:27:39but I must go.
00:27:40Philippides,
00:27:41my house is yours.
00:27:41Andromeda and Theocritus
00:27:42will keep you company.
00:27:43Do you know what is going on?
00:27:47I know what everyone knows.
00:27:49Our fleet is decimated,
00:27:50and the Persians threaten to land on our shores,
00:27:53guided by the traitor Hippias.
00:27:55Not everyone thinks Hippias is a traitor.
00:27:58I'm very tired.
00:28:00Excuse me.
00:28:07Poor Andromeda.
00:28:08She's so sad.
00:28:10And I think you know why, Philippides.
00:28:12What do you mean?
00:28:13You might as well admit that you know her.
00:28:17I suspected that you knew each other.
00:28:19And when I saw her embarrassment on seeing you,
00:28:21I was certain of it.
00:28:23She never broke the promise she made.
00:28:26The promise her father gave to my father, you mean.
00:28:29Our marriage was decided on
00:28:31while we were still children.
00:28:32She doesn't love me.
00:28:36If you want to marry her,
00:28:37I might be able to help you.
00:28:40And what do you want in exchange?
00:28:41I?
00:28:43Nothing.
00:28:44Crucis does.
00:28:46You and your sacred guard could be valuable to him.
00:28:48You see, they left the two of us alone.
00:28:50So we might talk plainly.
00:28:52You can have Andromeda.
00:28:54Only if you aid us in our cause.
00:28:57Does Andromeda accept this?
00:28:58I said that she accept this.
00:29:02And you?
00:29:03Do you accept?
00:29:04Philippides, I asked you a question.
00:29:06I am asking the questions.
00:29:07Answer me.
00:29:08Does Andromeda agree to this?
00:29:10Why, of course she does.
00:29:11Otherwise, we would hardly have asked you here.
00:29:14She will do it for her father.
00:29:15She will do anything for him.
00:29:16And if necessary, she will do anything for our cause.
00:29:18Philippides.
00:29:26Philippides.
00:29:28What do you want?
00:29:32I waited for you.
00:29:35I want to tell you how I really feel.
00:29:40I love you.
00:29:42So now you love me.
00:29:43Now I know that you're one of them.
00:29:45I'll have no part of the scheme.
00:29:47Goodbye.
00:29:47Goodbye.
00:29:49Philippides.
00:29:54Philippides.
00:29:58What did you tell him about me?
00:30:00Why does he hate me?
00:30:02He will be sorry.
00:30:18Since he came back from the city, he's not the same.
00:30:24He doesn't talk to anyone.
00:30:25He'll be sorry.
00:30:25Why is he?
00:30:26Who is he?
00:30:26He has no mind.
00:30:27He's not the same.
00:30:28I'll come back.
00:30:30He's not the same.
00:30:31He's not the same.
00:30:32He's not the same.
00:30:33Miltiades!
00:30:51Hail, Philipponese!
00:30:54Welcome, Miltiades.
00:30:55I came for some of that fresh air you always talked about.
00:30:59Ah, the wind is from the east.
00:31:02Drives up the land.
00:31:03What are you talking about?
00:31:05The east wind brings rain.
00:31:08Palladies, bring us wine.
00:31:12What's new in Athens?
00:31:13Let me see.
00:31:14Oh, they finished the new baths.
00:31:15It's very expensive, but to go there is a sign of distinction.
00:31:18It's not for us.
00:31:19Well, I've never been there myself.
00:31:21Well, I hear Theocrates goes there all the time to show how rich he is to everyone.
00:31:26Do you know who misses you in Athens, Philippides?
00:31:30That very beautiful girl from Mycena.
00:31:34Paris.
00:31:36And you never said a word about her.
00:31:39I don't know her.
00:31:40She might have seen you at Olympia.
00:31:46She wasn't the only girl who fell in love with you then.
00:31:49They all went out of their minds when they saw you.
00:31:51Especially when you wrestled the Spartans.
00:31:53I think he's a very good man.
00:31:56Eurus is his name.
00:31:58He might have won.
00:32:00But I had all the luck that day.
00:32:02Your friends in the sacred guard don't call it luck, Philippides.
00:32:06After you left Athens, the heart went out of them.
00:32:09They need your leadership.
00:32:09They don't need me that much.
00:32:13No.
00:32:14We all need you now more than we ever did.
00:32:18But we can understand why you wanted to leave Athens.
00:32:21To avoid worry, responsibilities.
00:32:24Here you have calm and you can live pleasantly.
00:32:26You're wrong.
00:32:29There are responsibilities.
00:32:31Here.
00:32:32Everywhere.
00:32:35But I'm not going back to Athens.
00:32:36Miltiades, I bring bad news.
00:32:44Persian forces have begun to land at the plain of Marathon.
00:32:47You must return to Athens.
00:32:48The End
00:33:01The End
00:33:02The End
00:33:32The End
00:34:02The End
00:34:32All goes well.
00:34:44What do you think of my army, Hippias?
00:34:47You will see, Darius, your Persians won't even have to fight.
00:34:50The Athenians and all of Greece wait for the great Darius to liberate them from the tyranny of their rulers.
00:34:55You will march into Athens in triumph.
00:34:59Yes, you may be right, Hippias, and yet you may be wrong.
00:35:02I put my faith in my soldiers.
00:35:04This is not the first time that our country has been invaded.
00:35:21This is not the first time that our country, our cities, and our people have been threatened with destruction.
00:35:27True, but never before has the danger been so great.
00:35:30The Persians are but a few hours' march away.
00:35:32What do you mean by that?
00:35:33That we should surrender?
00:35:34That we should welcome the Persians as friends?
00:35:37No!
00:35:38Don't you see that Athens alone isn't strong enough to defeat Darius and his army?
00:35:47We're too few in number.
00:35:49At most, we might arm 10,000 infantrymen and 5,000 cavalry.
00:35:53It's six against one, and we have no ships of war.
00:35:56We will arm everyone, everyone, and fight for an ideal common to every Athenian citizen.
00:36:02If we may not live in freedom, then we will die for freedom.
00:36:09Miltiades!
00:36:10Hail, Miltiades!
00:36:12Defend us from the Persians!
00:36:14Save us, Miltiades!
00:36:16Throw the Persians back into the sea!
00:36:18The gods be with you, Miltiades!
00:36:28Come, we are waiting, Miltiades.
00:36:31All of Athens waits to hear from you.
00:36:33I am sure you have an ingenious plan to lead us to victory.
00:36:42I do not possess the divine power to transform a disaster into a triumph.
00:36:48Theocritus asks me for a miracle, but he knows full well it cannot be.
00:36:53I can only say this.
00:36:55My men will fight for Athens up to the end.
00:36:57We shall force the invader back into the sea, or he will enslave our people.
00:37:03Every one of us, every man who hates tyranny, his duty is to help fight the enemy.
00:37:09Well then, why have you held back all the men of the sacred god?
00:37:12These champions of the sacred god.
00:37:14Why do they stay in Athens?
00:37:16Only a hundred men.
00:37:19Not enough to make a decisive difference in a war, Theocritus.
00:37:21They have been ordered to defend the temple of Pallas Athena.
00:37:26I do not believe in miracles, but I put faith in the will of the gods, and in the justice of our cause.
00:37:32Ha ha!
00:37:33What good is justice?
00:37:34What good is justice on the battlefield?
00:37:37There is no justice in war.
00:37:40Only strength.
00:37:41The number of armed men is what counts.
00:37:43Sword against sword.
00:37:45How can we match the Persian power?
00:37:47You forget one thing, Theocritus.
00:37:50When a man fights on the side of justice, he has the strength of a giant.
00:37:53He who defends his home, his wife, and his children, is a tiger before the enemy.
00:38:00A splendid massacre.
00:38:03That is what our commander proposes.
00:38:05We will all be slaughtered.
00:38:08But in glory, look at what the odds are.
00:38:12We are one against six.
00:38:14So I propose that we surrender to Darius.
00:38:18It is true that if we alone here in Athens attempted to push back the Persians, there would be little hope for us.
00:38:27But if we had an ally with an army as strong as ours, then there would be hope for us.
00:38:31The army of Sparta.
00:38:33With the help of Sparta, Athens would be saved.
00:38:37And what guarantees the help of Sparta?
00:38:40The common peril.
00:38:42After Athens, Sparta would be the Persian's target.
00:38:44And after Sparta, all of Greece.
00:38:46The Spartans know this.
00:38:48The Spartans have never trusted us.
00:38:50You're right.
00:38:52Sparta thinks that some Athenians are craters, ready to welcome the Persians.
00:38:57But there is one man in whom they would believe.
00:39:00A man they respect.
00:39:02An Athenian who is above all suspicion.
00:39:05Philippides.
00:39:07As soon as our forces are ready, Athens will march against the Persians.
00:39:11And will face them on the plain of Marathon.
00:39:13If the council approves my plan, I order you, Philippides, to leave for Sparta immediately and enlist their help.
00:39:21May the gods ride with you.
00:39:44We'll meet at Marathon.
00:39:45The Spartans is on the plain of Marathon.
00:39:45No Reno fairies.
00:39:46To some people.
00:39:46Sa bass, fair NSAκι.
00:39:48Meanwhile, The Spartans willpower be his help.
00:39:50Fish and actions are每and temple.
00:39:51Fish and actions are рядом with each other.
00:39:51To one to come.
00:39:52And one to come.
00:39:52There is only one man.
00:39:53A Bulgarian leaves.
00:39:54At some people needs a punch.
00:39:54Tiger city.
00:39:55A little to gokm folks.
00:39:56And the front.
00:39:56A combin and inspections.
00:39:58To some people.
00:39:59Topside you.
00:39:59Gar интерI action to sell them.
00:40:00Is to work.
00:40:02Have a wonderfulipping group.
00:40:02Your feet.
00:40:03There is a vampire.
00:40:04We'll see them guys.
00:40:05The grandkids.
00:40:05We're in shape to our final.
00:40:06Now to look at theiami.
00:40:06And once lost people.
00:40:15Farewell. I'm sure you will succeed.
00:40:23Thank you, Karis. I will do all I can.
00:40:27Goodbye.
00:40:45Adromeda.
00:40:55You love him, don't you?
00:40:57I should have realized before today that he was the man for you.
00:41:00Yes, I love him.
00:41:02But someone turned him away from me.
00:41:06Since the day he was our guest, he despises me, hates me.
00:41:10I've been wrong, Adromeda.
00:41:12I've been so wrong in everything.
00:41:15The people are against Hippias.
00:41:18Theocritus is a liar.
00:41:20Father, you shouldn't blame yourself.
00:41:23No one doubts your good faith.
00:41:25Maybe everything will be all right.
00:41:41Why did you really come here anyway?
00:41:43Why did you?
00:41:44You say you want me to do something for you.
00:41:47Well, what is it? Tell me.
00:41:48I want to make sure that Philippides will not be harmed.
00:41:52He loves you and I know you love him.
00:41:55Protect him from the awkwardness.
00:41:56Andromeda.
00:41:57Andromeda.
00:41:59Andromeda.
00:41:59Philippides doesn't love me.
00:42:01He's in love with you.
00:42:06He's in love with me?
00:42:08He never spoke about you at all.
00:42:11Yet I could see it in his eyes.
00:42:13Because I knew it when he kissed me that he loved another.
00:42:15I tried.
00:42:17But never could I make him forget you, Andromeda.
00:42:20Are you satisfied now?
00:42:21Are you?
00:42:23Charis, listen to me.
00:42:24Get out of here.
00:42:25You dare come here parading your precious innocence and your purity.
00:42:29Philippides loves you.
00:42:30You want more do you want?
00:42:32Well, you want more do you want?
00:45:06They expect to save Athens by sending him to Sparta.
00:45:09If he manages to get to Sparta, I'll be surprised.
00:45:15Surprised? Why do you say that?
00:45:17Because we are at war and the road is treacherous.
00:45:22There are some men here to see you, master.
00:45:24Tell me what happened.
00:45:34Where are the others?
00:45:37And Philippides?
00:45:38He's still alive.
00:45:40He got away.
00:45:41How I hate you.
00:45:55Come on, you're coming with me.
00:45:56No.
00:45:57Let me alone, Theocardus.
00:45:58I'm taking you with me to the camp of Darius.
00:46:00No, I don't want to go.
00:46:01I'm sorry, my dear.
00:46:03You know too much, so you're coming with me.
00:46:05Athens is fighting for its life, and yours eventually.
00:46:29The Athenian army is facing the Persian horde at Marathon alone.
00:46:32The life of Athens depends on you.
00:46:35Athens asks you to help her fight.
00:46:38Sparta will listen to the appeal of Athens.
00:46:41But before the new moon has risen, there is nothing we can do.
00:46:46Our priests forbid us to fight until then.
00:46:48That is the will of the gods.
00:46:49If the gods say that, then the gods will the destruction of all Greece.
00:46:55Philippides is right.
00:46:56We must help Athens.
00:46:58When Darius has taken over Athens, then nothing will stand in his way.
00:47:02He will come and take over Sparta.
00:47:05You're forgetting, Eurus, that for as long as we can remember,
00:47:08Sparta and Athens have been bitter enemies.
00:47:11Wars have divided us.
00:47:12How can we aid them after what we have suffered at their hands?
00:47:16Athenian, we suspect and mistrust you.
00:47:19What proof do you have that this is not an Athenian trick?
00:47:22The word of Philippides.
00:47:24I, Eurus, will vouch for it.
00:47:26Friends, I remember my encounter with Eurus at the Olympic Games.
00:47:31Eurus is a great fighter, and he can tell you himself
00:47:34that strong arms do not win a fight
00:47:37if the other parts of the body are not working with them.
00:47:42Spartans, our two cities are members of the same body,
00:47:46and if they fight together, then it can make all the difference.
00:47:48Greece shall be saved.
00:47:50I have nothing more to say.
00:47:53Now, the fate of Greece is in your hands.
00:47:55Hey!
00:47:57Hey!
00:47:57Hey!
00:47:57Hey!
00:48:10Hey!
00:48:22Hey!
00:48:22Darius wants to strike fear in the hearts of the men, for the skull.
00:48:46Our men don't frighten easily, Miltiades.

00:50:03Be patient.

00:52:48Call in the reserves!
00:52:50Get back to your men!
00:52:52I'll call the reserves only as a last resort!
00:52:55Athenians!
00:52:56Delipides!
00:52:57Athenians, hold out!
00:53:00Sparta is with us!
00:53:02Felipides is back!
00:53:03Sparta is with us!
00:53:05Forward all the reserves!
00:53:08Follow me!
00:53:09Attack!
00:53:11The men!
00:53:12The men!
00:53:14The men!
00:53:15The men!
00:53:16The men!
00:55:19There'd better be no resistance when these men land at Piraeus.
00:55:22What's more, I want you to arrange for the complete surrender of the Athenian army.
00:55:26You know what happens to those who betray me.
00:55:29This idea of yours to attack Athens from the rear is your last chance.
00:55:34Look over there.
00:55:35It's a woman.
00:55:40Come here, courage.
00:55:40She heard all you said.
00:55:41Let her die in the dirt.
00:56:04She's a spy.
00:56:08That is what will happen to all your enemies.
00:56:14Hail, Darius.
00:56:15We'll meet again in Athens.
00:56:16We'll meet again in Athens.
00:56:17We'll meet again in Athens.
00:56:19Come on.
00:56:49Come on.
00:57:02It will soon be midnight.
00:57:05The Spartans should have been here by sunset.
00:57:08Eurus told me they would.
00:57:10Perhaps they'd change their minds.
00:57:13Perhaps they think that Darius will be satisfied just to conquer Athens.
00:57:19The day we were able to defend ourselves.
00:57:23But tomorrow, without Sparta, we have no chance at all.
00:57:29Get up. Let us through.
00:57:40Look over there.
00:57:45It looks like they've taken a woman prisoner.
00:57:48Philippides, come here, quickly.
00:57:50We found her just outside the camp.
00:57:59She asked for you.
00:58:00She said she had something to tell you.
00:58:02Caris.
00:58:07Philippides.
00:58:10Philippides.
00:58:11What is it?
00:58:11I want you closer.
00:58:16Beloved.
00:58:17Caris, what happened?
00:58:22The Persian fleet will land at Piraeus.
00:58:28Tomorrow, they will attack Athens.
00:58:31Led by Theocritus.
00:58:38Traitor.
00:58:40Philippides.
00:58:43Beloved.
00:58:44You must save Athens.
00:58:46You must save Athens.
00:58:46You must hurry, Philippides.
00:59:11You must leave now for Athens.
00:59:13Or else Caris will have died in vain.
00:59:16What can we do against the fleet?
00:59:19I want you and the men of the sacred guard
00:59:21to delay the landing at Piraeus.
00:59:24All right.
00:59:26It's the only thing to do.
00:59:27Listen, if the Spartan army comes in time,
00:59:29we will be able to attack.
00:59:31But we will attack before dawn.
00:59:33Hold out as long as you can.
00:59:35You do not see us by noon.
00:59:38Save yourselves.
00:59:42Pray to the gods for her, Meltaides.
00:59:44And pray for help.
01:00:02Prepare a funeral pyre for this woman
01:00:03and bury her ashes on the field of battle.
01:00:06She fought and died as one of us.
01:00:08Let's try and die.
01:00:11Let's go.
01:00:12Let's go.
01:00:12Let's go.
01:00:13Let's go.

01:05:49There is something wrong.
01:05:52Everything is wrong, Andromeda.
01:05:54Everything.
01:05:56No.
01:05:57I'm sure that Valypides will succeed in his mission.
01:06:03A very touching family scene.
01:06:06Forgive me for interrupting you, but this is important, Crucis.
01:06:09And between friends, there is no need to stand on ceremony.
01:06:13What do you want, Theocritus?
01:06:14The time has come to show Hippias how loyal we are.
01:06:17Father, I am here to hold you to your promises.
01:06:20What do you mean?
01:06:22Your father must convince the council to surrender to Darius.
01:06:24As the most venerable member of the council, he can make them do whatever he wants.
01:06:28Whatever you want, you mean?
01:06:30Well, Theocritus are not a traitor to my country.
01:06:33I shall tell the council we must resist.
01:06:36I will not bother to tell you again.
01:06:39Convince the council, or you will never see your daughter again.
01:06:42No.
01:06:42Father.
01:06:43Stop.
01:06:44No.
01:06:44Let me go.
01:06:45Let her go.
01:06:46When you come to your senses.
01:06:47No.
01:06:48Not before.
01:06:49No.
01:06:51I will not curse you.
01:06:58Listen to me.
01:07:00You have no choice anymore.
01:07:01If Athens does not surrender, it means the life of your daughter.
01:07:06No.
01:07:06Don't worry.
01:07:07No.
01:07:13No.
01:07:28No.
01:07:33Please.
01:07:34Here, take her.
01:07:56Now back to the fleet.
01:08:04I want you to summon a sacred god.
01:08:19We've got to get to Piraeus.
01:08:22The Persians are landing there.
01:08:25Attacking us from the rear.
01:08:34Listen carefully.
01:08:51Our orders are to hold back the Persians only as long as we can.
01:08:57Remember, we're only a hundred against a whole fleet.
01:09:01We have no fear of them, Philippides.
01:09:03We will hold them back as ordered.
01:09:04We have a chance if we surprise them.
01:09:06First, we'll set the stakes in the water.
01:09:09And men, we fight only if I give the signal.
01:09:12Philippides!
01:09:14Thank the gods you are still here, Philippides.
01:09:17It's my master.
01:09:19My master, Crucis.
01:09:20He's been wounded.
01:09:20He's dying.
01:09:21Won't you help him?
01:09:22Keep going.
01:09:23I'll be right back.
01:09:28I ask nothing for me.
01:09:31But save Andromeda.
01:09:32She loves you, Philippides.
01:09:35Where is Andromeda?
01:09:37Theocritus took her away by force.
01:09:40But I don't know where.
01:09:42I will do what I can to find her.
01:09:46I don't mind dying.
01:09:48I don't care what happens to me.
01:09:52But her, I know.
01:09:54She's done nothing wrong.
01:09:55She's suffering without knowing why.
01:10:03Save her.
01:10:04Save her, Philippides.
01:10:09I can only say this.
01:10:11If the gods are just, they will help.
01:10:13All right, let's get started.
01:10:23Follow me.
01:10:24Follow me.
01:10:25Or, look.
01:10:27There's a shot.

01:12:15In my chariot.
01:12:17Don't be too sure.
01:12:18Don't be too sure.
01:12:48There's two minutes to four.
01:12:51On your helm.
01:13:18There's one mile down ahead.
01:13:32I saw one mile signal.
01:13:37Today you'll share my triumph.
01:13:40As your slave.
01:13:41Or as my queen.
01:13:43You have your choice.
01:13:45Today I will have Athens at my feet.
01:13:48Impossible.
01:13:48The gods will defeat you.
01:13:50You're wrong, Andromeda.
