00:00this happened a couple weeks into the summer I had just graduated high school it was my first
00:16and probably last summer without any real responsibilities career or academic wise
00:22everyone knows the beginning of the summer is the best time of the year so it's safe to say
00:27that I was living my best life at that point in Wyoming there's this popular tradition where
00:33the new graduates drive way out into the plateaus and go rock climbing well I'm not actually sure
00:38if it's a tradition anywhere besides my school but I like to think it is it's kind of a rite of
00:44passage thing celebrating your freedom by doing something that requires a little skill and a lot
00:49of nerve my friends and I have been talking about it for weeks and we finally decided to make it
00:54happen it felt like the perfect way to kick off what I hoped would be an unforgettable summer
00:59vacation it was me Alexandra Nick and Jack we've all been friends since middle school and Alex was
01:06the only one with a car reliable enough to make the drive a jeep that she was obsessed with and
01:12jumped at any excuse to take off-road she was also the designated driver since she doesn't drink which
01:18worked out perfectly for the rest of us who were planning to bring a few beers to celebrate once
01:22we reached the top of whatever plateau we decided to climb our plan was to check out the flaming gorge
01:28lookout first then drive through the plateau area to find a good spot for climbing the lookout was
01:33incredible one of those views that makes you remember why you love living in Wyoming after
01:39spending about an hour taking pictures and just soaking it in we started heading back toward route 80
01:44taking our time and keeping an eye out for potential climbing spots we were driving along highway 141
01:51when we spotted this really cool area off the side of the road there were these massive rock formations
01:57that looked perfect for climbing not too technical but challenging enough to be worth the effort Alex
02:03pulled into a small gravel lot and we grabbed our gear and filled our backpacks with drinks the plateau
02:10we chose was maybe a 15 minute climb to the top nothing too crazy just a steady scramble up the rock face with
02:17enough handholds and footholds to make it manageable i have a bunch of pictures from that day mostly
02:22because Alex insisted we get a million pictures of her so i'll include some of them Alex went first
02:28since she was the most experienced climber among us followed by me then nick then jack bringing up the
02:34rear the view from the top was absolutely worth it you could see for miles in every direction
02:40just endless stretches of Wyoming wilderness we cracked open our beers and we're just sitting
02:46there enjoying the moment talking about some of our other friends from school i was just kind of
02:52staring into space admiring the scenery when i noticed a car speeding down the highway it was a
02:58red pickup truck to my surprise after passing Alex's car it screeched to a halt in the middle of the
03:04highway i kept watching and it actually started reversing right there in the middle of the highway
03:10i pointed it out to my friends and the four of us got a little quieter all wondering what the truck
03:15was doing it reversed until it could turn into the lot we had parked in which it did we all watched as
03:22someone got out of the truck from our distance we could tell it was a man based on his height and
03:27build but we couldn't make out much detail at first we thought maybe he was just another person
03:33looking for a place to climb or hike or just stop and rest but then he started walking around Alex's
03:39jeep in a way that just immediately seemed wrong he was peering into the windows trying the door
03:44handles and generally inspecting the car like he was planning to break into it that's when Nick
03:50yelled hey from the top of the plateau to announce our presence and let that guy know that the car was
03:54not unattended we saw the guy jump a little and start looking around clearly unsure where the voice
04:00had come from finally he spotted us from atop the plateau and he actually waved at us that made us
04:07think it was over that he'd probably get back in his truck knowing that he couldn't get away with
04:12doing anything to our surprise though he kept poking around Alex's car in response to that Jack
04:19yelled that we were armed which I still think was a bad idea we obviously didn't have any weapons with
04:24us but I figured Jack thought the bluff might scare the guy off instead the man looked up at us and
04:30yelled back something that made me freeze up he said me too kiddo then he held something up in the air
04:36and waved it around presumably a gun but I couldn't tell from so far away what happened next was like
04:42something out of a nightmare the man started ramming his shoulder and elbow into the jeep's windows
04:47clearly trying to break in we could hear the impact even from where we were sitting Alex was furious and
04:54started screaming at him to get away from the car the rest of us joined in yelling and making as much
05:00noise as possible while we started scrambling down the plateau as quickly as we could safely manage
05:05I've never climbed down anything so fast in my life by the time we heard the sound of glass
05:11shattering we've made it to the ground and we're sprinting across the lot toward the jeep
05:15the man saw us coming and yelled for us to stop pointing what I can now tell was definitely a gun
05:21directly at us we had no choice but to stop and put our hands up the man told us to throw our phones
05:28and wallets on the grounds which we did without hesitation then he ordered us to walk backward while he
05:34collected our stuff keeping the gun trained on us the entire time I was close enough now to get a good
05:40look at his face he was an older white guy maybe in his 50s with a scraggly beard and kind of weathered
05:47features nothing particularly distinctive which was frustrating because I knew it would be impossible
05:53to identify him among a group of generic looking white men after collecting all of our belongings
05:59he pulled out a knife and punctured one of Alex's tires then he walked back to his pickup truck
06:05which I noticed didn't have any license plates and drove off without another word
06:09Alex was livid and I don't blame her I was mostly scared from being held at gunpoint
06:15but if I were in her shoes I'd be furious as well not only had this guy robbed us and damaged our car
06:22but we couldn't even call the police or chase after him since he'd taken our phones and disabled the jeep
06:27Jack and I changed the tire as fast as possible
06:31but I'm pretty sure all of us knew there was no way we'd be able to do it quick enough
06:35once we were back on the road Alex drove as fast as she could in the direction the pickup had gone
06:41but he was long gone
06:42we gave up soon after that
06:44Nick knew the way back to town by heart
06:46so we decided to just head home and figure out what to do from there
06:50as soon as we got to Alex's house we used her mom's phone to call the police
06:55we gave them a description of the man and his truck
06:58but without license plates or any other identifying information
07:01there wasn't much they could do except keep an eye out for someone matching the description
07:06we never heard anything back from the police obviously
07:09and as far as I know the guy was never caught
07:12it completely ruined what should have been one of the best days of our summer
07:16and I don't think any of us felt safe going out to remote areas like that for at least a few months
07:21I definitely didn't
07:23my name is Sophia
07:34this happened three years ago when I was 19
07:37my older brother Luke had just graduated from college in California
07:41and the two of us were driving cross-country back home to New Jersey
07:44since he'd been living out there for four years
07:47he had accumulated a whole apartment's worth of stuff
07:50furniture, electronics, books, everything
07:54and there was no way he could fly back with all of it
07:57but that wasn't the main reason we were doing it
07:59I mean cross-country road trip
08:01sign me up for that any day of the week
08:03I considered it a summer vacation
08:06better even
08:07we could have taken the direct route through Nevada and Colorado
08:11but Luke wanted to see more of the country he'd been studying about
08:14and I had never been to places like Zion or the Grand Canyon either
08:18so we decided to take the scenic route along the southern edge
08:22Luke insisted on renting a U-Haul instead of just shipping everything
08:26or selling it and starting fresh back home
08:28honestly I think he was also trying to save money wherever he could
08:32like a typical fresh college graduate
08:34the U-Haul wasn't huge
08:36but it was big enough that I felt like we were driving a small moving truck across the country
08:40before we left
08:42both our parents and pretty much every travel forum we looked at had the same warning
08:47be careful in New Mexico
08:48it wasn't that the whole state was dangerous
08:51but there were stories about scams targeting travelers
08:55along with crime in some of the smaller towns
08:57and just generally sketchy situations in the more remote desert areas
09:01our dad specifically told us not to stop there unless we absolutely had to
09:06and if we did
09:07to stick to major gas stations
09:09and get back on the highway as quickly as possible
09:12Luke and I agreed that we'd just drive straight through New Mexico without stopping
09:16we'd fill up in Arizona
09:18drive through as fast as possible
09:20and stop again once we hit Texas
09:22it seemed like a reasonable plan
09:25the first part of the trip was amazing
09:27Zion was incredible
09:29the Grand Canyon was everything I'd hoped it would be
09:32driving through Arizona was actually really beautiful in a way I hadn't expected
09:36but somewhere in the remote stretch of New Mexico
09:39our plan fell apart
09:40the U-Haul was getting worse gas mileage than Luke had anticipated
09:44and the gauge was dropping faster than we'd calculated
09:47in hindsight
09:49it was probably a little naive to assume we'd be able to make it through the whole state without stopping
09:53we started looking for the next gas station along the highway
09:57but according to our GPS it was still about 40 miles away
10:02the gauge was already below a quarter tank
10:04and Luke was getting nervous about whether we'd make it
10:07he pulled over to check the map
10:09and that's when we realized we didn't really have a choice
10:12there was a small town about 10 miles ahead that showed up on the GPS as having a gas station
10:17it wasn't ideal but it was better than risking running out of gas in the middle of the desert
10:22the town was tiny
10:24probably no more than a few hundred people if that
10:27it had that weird stillness that some small desert towns have
10:30like everyone's inside hiding from the heat
10:33even though it wasn't particularly hot that day
10:35there were a few run down buildings
10:37a small main street
10:39and not much else
10:40we didn't see any other travelers or cars passing through
10:44which felt strange since we were still relatively close to a major highway
10:47the gas station was one of those generic places with a few pumps and a small convenience store attached
10:53as Luke was filling up the tank
10:56I noticed we were getting some odd looks from the few locals who were around
11:00nothing aggressive
11:01just lingering stares that made me uncomfortable
11:04there was this guy leaning up against the convenience store smoking a cigarette
11:09who I kept catching eyes with
11:10and I had to physically force myself not to look at him
11:13I told myself it was probably just because we were obviously not from there
11:18when we were driving a U-Haul with California plates
11:20but nothing happened
11:22after Luke finished fueling up
11:25I tried to navigate us back to the highway
11:27that should have been the simple part
11:30we could literally see the highway from certain intersections in the town
11:33but every road we took seemed to lead us further away from it
11:36it was the strangest thing
11:38we'd drive toward where we knew the highway was
11:41and the road would curve or dead end
11:43or just take us in the completely wrong direction
11:45it was like the entire town was literally designed to inconvenience us
11:50as ridiculous as that sounds
11:52and before you ask why we weren't using the GPS
11:55well we were
11:56or at least we were trying to
11:58but it wasn't helping
12:00it was clear that Google hadn't updated that location in ages
12:03because the map kept routing us to roads that didn't exist anymore
12:07or were inaccessible entirely
12:09and on top of all that
12:10the signal was practically non-existent out there
12:13so it would go through cycles of brief connection
12:16followed by nothingness for minutes on end
12:18we ended up driving around the same few blocks multiple times
12:22and I was getting increasingly anxious
12:24Luke was trying to stay calm
12:26but I could tell he was frustrated too
12:28it started feeling more and more unnatural
12:31like there was something uninviting about that place
12:34that we were supposed to have stayed away from
12:36I can't describe it
12:37but that feeling of literally seeing the highway
12:40but never being able to actually reach it
12:42was just so bizarre and deeply unsettling
12:44after another 20 minutes of driving in circles
12:48Luke decided to go back to the gas station
12:50and just ask for directions the old-fashioned way
12:53I begged him not to
12:54but he practically yelled at me
12:56saying we were literally trapped in the one place
12:58we were told to stay away from
13:00I could tell he was pretty freaked out at that point
13:02so I just kept my mouth shut
13:04after returning to the gas station
13:07he went inside while I waited in the van
13:09when he came out
13:11he had this worried expression on his face
13:13he got in and said the guy working there
13:16had given him directions
13:17but they seemed unnecessarily complicated
13:20according to the clerk
13:21we needed to drive 17 miles
13:24in the opposite direction from the highway
13:25through some desert back roads
13:27to eventually loop back to an on-ramp
13:29I stared at him like he had lost his mind
13:32in what world would we need to drive 17 miles
13:35in the wrong direction
13:36when we could see the highway
13:38from where we were sitting
13:39I asked Luke what the guy was like
13:42and he said he seemed friendly enough
13:44but there was something off
13:45about how confident he was about the directions
13:47like he was trying really hard
13:49to convince Luke that this roundabout route
13:51was the only way
13:52Luke also mentioned that the clerk
13:54had been asking a lot of questions
13:56about where we were going
13:57and how long we would be traveling
13:58before I could even say it
14:01Luke was like
14:02I don't trust it whatsoever
14:03we need to get the hell out of here
14:05he just started driving
14:07and I didn't object
14:08he eventually pulled over
14:10on a quiet side street
14:12to figure out what to do next
14:13the GPS still wasn't functioning properly
14:16and I felt myself beginning to hyperventilate
14:18there was a little part of me
14:20that couldn't help but think
14:21something really terrible
14:22was about to happen
14:23and then as if on cue
14:25a dusty pickup truck pulled up beside us
14:28I felt my heart starting to race
14:30and I looked over at Luke
14:32who from what I could tell
14:33was already preparing to speed off
14:35should it come to that
14:36the truck's window rolled down
14:38and the guy asked Luke
14:39if we had broken down or were lost
14:41Luke stared at the guy
14:43for a good few seconds before answering
14:45clearly trying to gauge
14:46whether we were in danger or not
14:48I sat there in the passenger seat
14:50trying to control my breathing
14:51that's how freaked out I was
14:53had I been alone
14:55I don't know what I would have done
14:56after a tense few moments
14:59Luke just said
15:00we were heading for the highway
15:01he also described the route
15:03we were planning on taking to get there
15:05which I realized were the directions
15:06the gas station clerk had given us
15:08I didn't have the best view of the man
15:10from where I was sitting
15:11but based on the tone of his voice
15:13it sounded like he got really serious
15:15after hearing my brother speak
15:17he asked us if we were fucking crazy
15:19and said we should definitely
15:21not follow those directions
15:22he went on to say
15:24that the route my brother had described
15:26would take us toward
15:26a really desolate area
15:28that was suspected to be
15:29a drug running hot spot
15:30instead
15:31he gave us alternate directions
15:33then said it was a miracle
15:34we hadn't been robbed already
15:36considering how clueless we were
15:37and how badly we stuck out
15:39driving a U-Haul and all
15:40then before we could even thank him
15:43he drove off
15:44neither Luke or I
15:46said anything after that
15:47Luke just started driving
15:49following the man's directions
15:50sure enough
15:52about a mile outside of town
15:53there was this gravel road
15:55that was easy to miss
15:56if you weren't looking for it
15:57it was the least intuitive
15:59most convoluted highway entrance
16:01I'd ever seen
16:02but after following the road
16:03for a good while
16:04it did actually get us
16:05back onto the highway
16:06and that was that
16:08Luke and I talked a little bit
16:09about the whole thing
16:10but I don't think either of us
16:12wanted to harp on it too much
16:13we obviously laugh about it now
16:15and our whole family knows the story
16:17and asks us to tell it
16:18every so often
16:19but at the time
16:20it was the most unsettling thing
16:22that's ever happened to us
16:24I'll never forget that
16:25indescribable feeling
16:26of being there
16:27it was like this mix of dread
16:29and anticipation
16:30and anxiety
16:31blended into one
16:32my brother described it
16:34as a kind of breathless limbo
16:36where you're not quite suffocating
16:37but you can feel it coming
16:39I never want to experience that again
16:41this happened five years ago
16:54five summers ago to be exact
16:56my girlfriend at the time
16:58let's just call her PS
17:00had just graduated from college
17:02with me having graduated a year earlier
17:04we aren't together anymore
17:06but there's no bad blood between us
17:08and I don't regret a single bit
17:10of our relationship
17:11even though it eventually fell apart
17:13she was mixed
17:14half Croatian
17:15and half Brazilian
17:16and the two of us
17:17had always talked about
17:18going on a European trip together
17:20after finishing college
17:21and if there's one thing
17:22you should know about PS
17:23it's that if she put her mind to something
17:25she was going to stop at nothing
17:27to see it through
17:27call it the Latin blood
17:29that's always the joke I made
17:31but that's just how she was
17:33so as soon as she graduated
17:35the two of us started planning
17:37the summer vacation
17:37we had always fantasized about
17:39there was one glaring issue though
17:41we were both painfully broke
17:43so we'd have to cheap it
17:45the itinerary we ended up settling on
17:47was pretty ambitious for two people
17:49on a shoestring budget
17:50we'd spend a week in Croatia
17:53finishing up with two nights in Rijeka
17:55which was PS' grandparents' hometown
17:57she had never been there before
17:59but she'd grown up hearing stories about it
18:01from her grandmother
18:02and I could tell she was excited
18:04to see where her family came from
18:05because we were trying to save
18:07every possible cent
18:08we couldn't afford any of the nice hotels
18:10or even decent hostels
18:12instead
18:13we ended up booking the cheapest Airbnbs
18:16and travel lodges
18:16we could find on short notice
18:18I'm talking about places
18:20with one star reviews
18:21and photos that look like
18:22they were taken with a flip phone
18:23but we didn't care
18:25we were just happy to be going
18:27Zagreb and Dubrovnik were incredible
18:29even on our tight budget
18:31the cities were packed with tourists
18:33which made it easy to blend in
18:35and find cheap food and free activities
18:37but Rijeka was different
18:39it's a port city on the northern coast
18:41and while it's technically on the water
18:43it's not exactly what you'd call
18:45a beach destination
18:46more importantly
18:47it definitely wasn't a popular tourist spot
18:50walking around
18:52PS and I were clearly some of the only foreigners
18:54in the entire town
18:55that should have been our first red flag
18:58but honestly we kind of loved it
19:00PS speaks decent Croatian
19:03not fluent
19:04but enough to get by
19:05and I was picking up bits and pieces
19:07as we went
19:07we spent our first day
19:09just wandering around
19:10talking to locals
19:11soaking up the authentic Croatian experience
19:14we couldn't get
19:14in the touristy cities
19:16PS is one of those people
19:18who can strike up a conversation
19:19with anyone
19:20and I'm pretty talkative myself
19:21so we were having a blast
19:23just chatting with shopkeepers
19:24and random people on the street
19:26everyone seemed friendly enough
19:29though I did notice
19:30we were getting some lingering stares
19:31not the usual curious looks
19:34you'd expect tourists to get
19:35these felt different
19:36like more intense
19:38but PS didn't seem bothered by it
19:40so I figured
19:41I was just being paranoid
19:42on our second day
19:44we decided to venture a little further
19:46from the city center
19:47to find somewhere authentic
19:48to eat lunch
19:49PS had heard about
19:51this small restaurant area
19:52from someone at our Airbnb
19:53nothing fancy
19:55just a local center
19:56that supposedly had amazing
19:57seafood restaurants
19:58it was maybe a 15 minute walk
20:00from downtown
20:01through some residential streets
20:03that felt increasingly quiet
20:04as we got further
20:05from the main area
20:06the restaurant itself
20:08was pretty nondescript
20:09just a small building
20:10with a handful of tables inside
20:12and a simple handwritten menu
20:14taped to the window
20:15but the moment we walked in
20:17I knew PS had been right
20:18about the food
20:19the smell was incredible
20:21and you could tell
20:21everything was fresh
20:22and homemade
20:23we sat down at a table
20:25near the window
20:26and ordered way too much food
20:27grilled fish
20:28some kind of seafood pasta
20:30bread
20:31and a bottle of local wine
20:32that cost about 3 euros
20:34I remember thinking
20:36we'd struck gold
20:37finding this place
20:38the food was absolutely fantastic
20:40better than anything
20:41we'd had in the touristy restaurants
20:43and it was costing us
20:44practically nothing
20:45at one point
20:47I noticed that
20:48while we'd been eating
20:49a group of five men
20:50had come in
20:51and sat down
20:51just two tables away from us
20:53they looked rough
20:54the kind of guys you'd cross the street
20:56to avoid in any country
20:58but they were just sitting there eating
21:00not really paying attention to us
21:01as far as I could tell
21:02I was actually kind of surprised
21:04I hadn't noticed them earlier
21:06I figured I had just been too distracted
21:08by how good the food was
21:09or too consumed in the conversation
21:10I was having with my girlfriend
21:12I didn't think much of it
21:14and went back to eating
21:15but I remember finding it kind of annoying
21:17how loudly they were talking
21:18we were about halfway through our meal
21:21just talking and enjoying ourselves
21:23when P.S. suddenly went quiet
21:25she was looking past me
21:27toward the back of the restaurant
21:28toward those guys
21:29and I could tell something had shifted
21:31in her expression
21:32before I could ask her what was wrong
21:34she leaned across the table
21:36and said very quietly
21:37that we needed to leave right now
21:39I whispered back
21:41asking what she was talking about
21:42but she was already reaching for her purse
21:44she said she was serious
21:46and there was something in her voice
21:48that told me I'd better listen
21:49I still didn't understand
21:51what was happening
21:52but she's not the type
21:53to panic over nothing
21:54she speaks the language
21:56she knew the culture
21:58better than I did
21:58if she said we needed to get out of there
22:01there was probably a good reason
22:02I pulled out a handful of Kuna bills
22:05and threw them on the table
22:06way more than our meal costs
22:08and I followed her toward the door
22:09the whole time
22:11I was expecting her to explain
22:12but she just kept walking faster
22:14practically pulling me along
22:16by the arm
22:16it wasn't until we were outside
22:19that I finally demanded
22:20to know what was going on
22:21she looked back toward the restaurant
22:23and said she'd heard those men talking
22:25they were discussing
22:26what they were going to do to us
22:28to her specifically
22:29her voice was shaking a little
22:31which scared me more than anything else
22:33she said she heard them say
22:35they'd separate us first
22:37and some guy named Luca
22:38would know what to do
22:39whoever that was
22:40she said some other things
22:42that I don't want to repeat
22:43but the message was crystal clear
22:45we needed to get back
22:46to the main part of the town
22:47ASAP
22:48I told her they might have been joking
22:50but she shook her head
22:52and said they weren't talking
22:53about things they wanted to do
22:54but things they were going to do
22:56she told me she got the impression
22:58that what they were discussing
22:59was routine
23:00as opposed to fantasy
23:01I believed her
23:02that's when I made the mistake
23:04of looking back toward the restaurant
23:06all five men were standing outside now
23:09and they were definitely watching us
23:11not even trying to be subtle about it
23:13the moment they saw me looking
23:15they started walking in our direction
23:16I grabbed her hand
23:18and told her they were following us
23:20without another word
23:22we both started running
23:23not jogging
23:25not walking fast
23:26full on sprinting back
23:28toward the city center
23:29the problem was
23:30we were a lot further
23:32from downtown than I'd realized
23:33and the streets between us
23:35and safety were mostly
23:36empty residential blocks
23:37I could hear footsteps behind us
23:40and when I glanced back
23:41all five men were chasing us now
23:43they weren't even pretending anymore
23:45they were just straight up
23:47pursuing us through the streets
23:48it was downright terrifying
23:50PS was in better shape than me
23:52but I somehow managed to keep up
23:54probably because of adrenaline
23:56we ran for what felt like forever
23:58turning down random streets
24:00hoping we were going in the right direction
24:02finally
24:03after maybe 10 minutes
24:04of the most intense running of my life
24:06we started seeing other people
24:08on the sidewalks
24:09and hearing traffic
24:10the men stopped chasing us
24:12as soon as we hit the busy area
24:13I looked back one more time
24:15and saw them just standing there
24:16maybe two blocks behind us
24:18watching us
24:19but not coming any closer
24:20it was like they knew
24:22they couldn't do whatever
24:23they'd been planning
24:24once there were witnesses around
24:25we were both completely out of breath
24:28and shaking from adrenaline
24:30she was crying a little
24:31though she was trying to hide it
24:33I'd never seen her that scared before
24:35and it made the whole thing
24:37feel even more real
24:38we found a cafe in the main square
24:41and sat down
24:41trying to process what had just happened
24:43that's when this older Croatian guy
24:46at the table next to us
24:47who must have overheard us talking in English
24:49leaned over
24:50and asked if we were okay
24:52when we explained what had happened
24:54he just shook his head
24:55and called us idiots
24:56not in a mean way
24:58but like he couldn't believe
24:59how naive we'd been
25:00he said tourists
25:02shouldn't wander around alone
25:03in that part of the city
25:04especially not obvious foreigners
25:06like us
25:07then PS described the restaurant
25:09we'd been to
25:10and the guy's expression
25:11got even more serious
25:12what he told us
25:14literally made me dizzy
25:15he said we'd basically
25:17walked into a known hangout
25:18for local criminals
25:19that the place was connected
25:21to some kind of organized crime group
25:23that operated in the area
25:24he seemed genuinely concerned for us
25:26like we'd narrowly avoided
25:28something really bad
25:29I mentioned something
25:31about notifying local authorities
25:32and he just laughed
25:33but he didn't elaborate further
25:35then he paid for his coffee
25:37and promptly left the cafe
25:39PS and I didn't linger much longer
25:42we got up after catching our breath
25:44and headed straight back to our Airbnb
25:45the rest of our trip
25:47was basically ruined
25:48we were too spooked
25:50to leave our room
25:51except to grab food
25:52from places right in the city center
25:53we spent our last day
25:55just sitting inside
25:56watching TV on my laptop
25:57and counting down the hours
25:59until our flight
25:59looking back
26:01I'm incredibly grateful
26:02that PS had the presence of mind
26:04to get us out of there
26:05when she did
26:05if she hadn't understood
26:07what those men were saying
26:08or if she'd hesitated
26:10even a little bit
26:11I don't know
26:11what would have happened to us
26:12it's one of those experiences
26:14that makes you realize
26:15how quickly a normal day
26:17can turn into something
26:18genuinely dangerous
26:19especially when you're
26:21in an unfamiliar place
26:22where you don't fully understand
26:23the local dynamics
26:24I honestly still feel pretty stupid
26:27for being so casual
26:28in a foreign country
26:29I know that's one of the most
26:31dangerous things you can do
26:32especially if you look
26:33nothing like a local
26:34we didn't talk much
26:36about the incident
26:37after we got home
26:38but I know it affected
26:39both of us
26:40PS had always been fearless
26:42about traveling
26:42and exploring new places
26:44but I think that day in Rijeka
26:45changed something for her
26:46because it certainly did for me
26:49you
27:01you
27:01you
27:02you
