At the 2024 Emmys red carpet, 'Saturday Night Live' star Bowen Yang shares that he is so grateful to not be live this summer, reflecting on the casts' much-needed break.
00:00Congratulations on all the different moments of success we're experiencing, but I gotta ask you, how frustrating has it been with such a newsworthy summer to not be live?
00:11I am so grateful that we weren't on because it was too much. It was a lot and it just would have been like a big task.
00:24And look, we need the breaks, y'all. We are burnt out come May.
00:27Is there one news story that you were like, I mean, the comedy rights itself that really stood out for you this summer?
00:35I mean, all of breakdancing at the Olympics was, I was like, it didn't even have to have any sort of viral moments that it ended up having, but it would have been fun to just wear the hats and the track suits and all that.
00:50Just the look of it, I would have appreciated it.
00:53I would have deeply appreciated that as well. Now that Steve Martin will take on that role, especially with Maya as Kamala.
01:00I think it's whoever Maya is going to be comfortable with, but I feel like there's plenty of options.
01:07You've got, I don't know, great comedians. I think a lot of people have blown up Lauren's phone.
01:12And so I can't even keep track of who he has in mind, but there might be someone unexpected.
01:18I think there's like fun contenders.
01:21It's so funny how like people playing those roles is its own little race, is its own little like public election.
01:29You know what I mean?
01:30But the decision is ultimately Lauren Michaels is and he's so iconic.
01:33They made a movie about him.
01:34I hope more people discover his deal.
01:37I think he's very obscure.
01:39And I mean, SNL 50, which I can't believe it's already been 50 years of it being on.
01:45Other than your own contributions, which again, you keep me laughing.
01:49So that's why I was like, no, I need you to come back every day.
01:52I know you're burnt out.
01:53No, not anymore. I'm back.
01:54We're back.
01:55But what does it mean for it to see 50 years?
01:57And are there any standout sketches that, you know, made you want to be a comedian in the first place?
02:02Oh my gosh, so many.
02:03And like still I am inspired.
02:06Like I think I think this cast that I'm in right now is phenomenal.
02:10There's like the perfect cross section of every kind of comedic sensibility.
02:14You've got like TikTok comedians and you've got like trained sketch comedians.
02:17You've got standups.
02:18You've got like club comics.
02:19It's like every you've got body horror comedians like in Sarah Sherman.
02:22And so anyway, I love the current era.
02:23But like 50 years is like the totality of that is so astounding.
02:29And for it to all be sort of like curated by this one person is pretty incredible.
02:34And I think it's going to be a very fun celebration in February.
02:37And I think everybody I think everybody should watch.
02:39It's going to be really fun.
02:39But yes, so many sketches.
02:41I mean, I remember watching Maya Rudolph and Anna Goss, Sarah do Gemini's twin when I just moved to the States.
