00:00Stranger Things is known for basking in 80s nostalgia,
00:04but the story actually begins a wee bit earlier in the late 1950s.
00:09Victor Creel thought he'd found the perfect place to raise a family,
00:13a big house in the quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana.
00:16But his son Henry, however, was not exactly a sunshine and baseball kind of kid.
00:21He had special powers and was a bit of a budding psychopath.
00:24But Henry, my boy, he was a sensitive child.
00:32In March of 1959, young Henry murdered his mother and sister in what looked like a supernatural meltdown,
00:39and his father was blamed for their deaths and tossed into an asylum, where he remains to this day.
00:45Oh, this demon, it was taunting me.
00:49And I'm sure it would take me just as he'd taken my Virginia.
00:55Meanwhile, the exertion caused Henry to fall into a coma.
00:58The story attracted the attention of one Dr. Brenner,
01:01who took an intense interest in the boy with psychic powers.
01:05Brenner visited the now-awake Henry and took him into his care,
01:08hoping to study his brain and harness his supernatural abilities.
01:12Henry was taken to the brand new Hawkins National Laboratory,
01:17where Brenner literally branded him Subject 1.
01:20Henry became the lab's first psychic guinea pig,
01:23and, as it turned out, its last success story.
01:25Brenner quickly realized that he needed more test subjects,
01:29and thus began a secret MK Ultra-like experiment,
01:33which saw Brenner kidnapping kids, taking them to the lab,
01:37and training them to unlock their dormant abilities.
01:40When Papa finally realized he could not control me,
01:44he tried to recreate me.
01:49He began a program,
01:51and soon,
01:53others were warned.
01:56Fast forward a decade or so.
01:58The U.S. government was now very into LSD and telepathy,
02:02and a woman named Terry Ives volunteered to undergo some experiments.
02:05After being drugged, manipulated, and subjected to psychic tests,
02:10she discovered that she had been pregnant the entire time.
02:13In 1971, she gave birth to her daughter Jane,
02:16who had special powers owing to the experiments performed on her mom.
02:20Brenner, ever the baby snatcher,
02:22stole Jane at birth and renamed her Eleven,
02:25being his 11th subject.
02:27He told Terry that she had miscarried,
02:29and then fried her brain for asking too many questions,
02:32placing her in a state of near Catatonia.
02:34She won't get better.
02:37Will she?
02:41They don't think so, no.
02:43At the lab, Eleven grew up with other numbered children,
02:46and Brenner harnessed her abilities.
02:48Among her caretakers was a friendly orderly,
02:51who always seemed to know a little too much.
02:53Of course, this was a now-grown Henry,
02:56who was manipulating Eleven to join his psychopathic crusade against humanity.
03:00I could make my own rules.
03:03I could restore balance to a broken world.
03:08A predator.
03:10But for good.
03:12He convinced her to remove an implant that Brenner had given him to suppress his powers,
03:16and went on a psychic rampage,
03:18slaughtering everyone in the lab.
03:20When Eleven saw the carnage,
03:22she faced him in an epic telekinetic showdown.
03:24Fueled by rage and heartbreak,
03:26she blasted him through the very fabric of space and time,
03:30and sent him to another dimension entirely.
03:32Henry fell into some kind of creepy world filled with monsters and swirling particles,
03:37and he then reconstituted these particles into his massive pet spider,
03:42the Mind Flayer.
03:42Owing to the enormous expense of power,
03:45Eleven fell into a coma and suffered amnesia,
03:48forgetting the encounter entirely.
03:50Brenner, having survived the massacre,
03:52swept the mess under the rug and pretended everything was fine,
03:56simply finding some new kids and carrying on with his experiments.
04:00It was you.
04:05Always you.
04:06Fast forward a few years to 1983.
04:09Brenner is still working with Eleven,
04:11and is now forcing her into a sensory deprivation tank
04:14as some kind of Cold War spying scheme.
04:17Unfortunately, Eleven entered a dark void and encountered the Demogorgon.
04:21But after curiously touching it,
04:23a gate to the Upside Down was opened,
04:25and the Demogorgon escaped.
04:27Mike, I'm sorry.
04:31Sorry?
04:31What are you sorry for?
04:33The gate.
04:39I opened it.
04:40And with that, we come to season one,
04:43November 6th, 1983.
04:45Sweet little Will Byers biked home from a long campaign of D&D with his friends
04:49and was kidnapped by the Demogorgon,
04:51who took him back to the Upside Down for reasons that still aren't entirely explained.
04:56His frantic mom, Joyce, goes to the police,
04:58getting everyone's favorite chief of police, Jim Hopper, on the case.
05:02Just find my son, Hopper.
05:04Find him.
05:06Hopper deduces that the local lab is somehow involved in Will's disappearance.
05:11Meanwhile, Will's friends, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin,
05:14find Eleven, who had escaped the lab in the Demogorgon chaos.
05:18Everything is eventually traced back to Hawkins' lab.
05:21Will is rescued from the Upside Down,
05:23and Eleven goes missing after killing the Demogorgon.
05:26In exchange for both Eleven and Will's freedom,
05:28Hopper promises to keep the whole thing secret.
05:31You gotta give me your word.
05:35Nobody's ever gonna find out about this.
05:38And those other three kids, those boys, you're gonna leave them alone.
05:44And I'll tell you.
05:48I'll tell you where your little science experiment is.
05:51Eleven didn't die, but was transported back to the Upside Down,
05:54where she stayed for all of two minutes before re-emerging through another gate.
05:58She then wandered the woods until she was found by Hopper,
06:00who took her in as his daughter and kept her secluded in a cabin.
06:04All right, look.
06:06How about I get off early tonight,
06:09and I buy us a bunch of candy,
06:11and we can sit around and get fat,
06:13and we watch a scary movie together.
06:15Unfortunately, the Upside Down wasn't done,
06:17and Henry's pet, the Mind Flayer, had its eye on Earth.
06:20It uses Will's connection to the Upside Down and possesses him,
06:24using him as his conduit in the real world.
06:26But once again, the good guys emerge victorious.
06:29They force the Mind Flayer out of Will.
06:31Eleven closes the gate to the Upside Down and is legally adopted by Hopper,
06:35and the lab is closed thanks to the involvement of conspiracy theorist Murray Bauman.
06:40Since the release of the incendiary tape,
06:43the once quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana,
06:45has spent time in a place it never expected.
06:48The national spotlight.
06:50One year later, summer 1985,
06:52the heat has arrived, and with it, the new Starcourt Mall,
06:56a pastel paradise of neon lights, food courts, and capitalism.
07:00Everyone loved it.
07:01However, this is really just a cover for the Soviets,
07:04who had constructed the mall to mask their true intentions.
07:06Just below the mall was a massive device that they were using to open a new gate to the Upside Down,
07:24hoping to utilize its monsters for Cold War purposes.
07:28The portion of the Mind Flayer that flew out of Will now possesses Billy,
07:31who constructs a massive monster out of the melted bodies of Hawkins' citizens.
07:36Once again, the day is saved.
07:38The Russian's tool is destroyed,
07:40and the body part monster dies once its connection to the Upside Down is severed.
07:44Unfortunately, the ending is not so happy this time.
07:47Billy dies saving the kids,
07:48Hopper is taken by the Soviets,
07:50and the buyers leave Hawkins for California,
07:53taking Eleven with them.
07:54But I know you're getting older.
07:57Growing.
08:00Changing.
08:02And I guess,
08:03if I'm being really honest,
08:07that's what scares me.
08:10I don't want things to change.
08:13Spring 1986.
08:15Creepy things start happening in Hawkins.
08:17Teenagers start dying in horrible ways,
08:20their bones shattering and their eyes being gouged out.
08:22Poor Eddie Munson, the town metalhead and dungeon master,
08:26was framed for the murders,
08:27sparking a satanic panic in the town.
08:30And I've come to accept an awful truth.
08:34These murders are ritualistic sacrifices.
08:37We've all heard about how satanic cults are spreading to our country like some disease.
08:42And Eddie Munson,
08:44he's the leader of one of these cults.
08:47A cult that operates right here in Hawkins.
08:49But our heroes weren't fooled.
08:51Nancy, Steve, Robin, Dustin, Lucas, and Max
08:54began to uncover the truth.
08:56The real culprit was Henry Creel,
08:58who has since been transformed into the grotesque monster Vecna.
09:02He was targeting those with trauma
09:03and murdering them in order to open four gates
09:06between the Upside Down and the real world
09:08for an impending invasion.
09:09You don't have to do this.
09:13You can still stop this.
09:16It is over Eleven.
09:19Your friends have lost.
09:22Meanwhile, Brenner finds Eleven again
09:25and takes her to a top secret lab in the Nevada desert.
09:28Under his care, she began reliving her memories,
09:31discovering her role in creating Vecna,
09:33and how she was the sole survivor of the massacre of Hawkins' lab.
09:36Their work is soon interrupted by the army,
09:38who invades the secret lab and kills most of its inhabitants,
09:42including Brenner.
09:43Luckily, Eleven is picked up by Mike, Jonathan, Will, and Argyle,
09:47who have traced her back to the lab.
09:57Bye, Papa.
09:58Meanwhile, Hopper is being kept prisoner in a remote Soviet camp,
10:03where he discovers that they, too,
10:05have been experimenting with the Upside Down
10:07and even have a few of its inhabitants,
10:09including Demogorgons and some swirling particles
10:11belonging to the Mind Flayer.
10:13He's rescued by Joyce and Murray,
10:15and they return to Hawkins,
10:17where they all reunite with the gang.
10:21Hey.
10:21You're grown.
10:27Yeah.
10:30You're shrunk.

10:45The Hawkins group invades the Upside Down,
10:50and Eddie dies while drawing the bats away from Vecna.
10:53I didn't run away this time, right?
10:57No, no, no, no, no.
10:59You didn't run.
11:01You're gonna have to look after those little sheep for me, okay?
11:04Vecna is seemingly killed by Robin, Steve, and Nancy,
11:07but not before he attacks Max,
11:09who was suffering trauma owing to the events of the previous season.
11:12He succeeds in killing her,
11:14but Eleven is able to bring her back to life,
11:16albeit in a completely comatose form.
11:18Owing to the bad news,
11:20her brief death creates Vecna's fourth and final gate,
11:23allowing the Upside Down to fully invade Hawkins.
11:30And that's Stranger Things.
11:32We can't wait to see what season five has in store.
