Ugandan Police block NUP in Arua ahead of elections

Uganda’s opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) says police blocked its staff from accessing a planned campaign venue in the key northern city of Arua on Wednesday.

00:00Uganda's opposition party says police blocked its staff from entering a planned campaign
00:05venue in the key city of Aruwa.
00:08National Unity Platform supporters had gathered to welcome their 2026 presidential candidate,
00:13Bobby Wine.
00:14It comes ahead of the January elections, during which Uganda will choose its next president,
00:20parliament and local leaders, with long-time incumbent Uri Museveni once again cleared
00:25to run.
00:26Notably absent from the upcoming ballots is veteran opposition leader Dr. Kiza Beseje,
00:32who has spent more than a year behind bars.
00:34His wife has now issued an emotional plea for justice and his release.
00:38Beseje and his aide were arrested in Nairobi in November of 2024.
00:43Their military trial in Uganda collapsed after a Supreme Court ruling declared civilian trials
00:48in military courts unconstitutional.
00:50Now both men face treason charges before the High Court.
