Australia's education minister Blair Boyer has written to the federal government calling for a national inquiry into how asbestos contaminated sand was allowed to be imported and sold in the country. The number of public education sites which have used the recalled products has risen to more than 450. Blair Boyer says the sale of an asbestos-contaminated product in Australia is unacceptable.

00:00South Australia is absolutely calling for a national inquiry into this.
00:05I want to know, as I'm sure do all South Australians, how this stuff got through our borders,
00:11how it ended up on the shelves of major retailers like Kmart and Target,
00:16and then ended up in schools and preschools and thousands of households.
00:20And I want to know too what we're going to do to make sure it can't happen again.
00:24I think the Australian public rightfully would be thinking in this day and age
00:28how can something with asbestos, even naturally occurring asbestos like this,
00:33that is a product designed for young kids, wind up on the shelves of retailers in shops
00:40and then wind up in our houses and in our schools.
