00:00Namaste and welcome to Hyderabad.
00:10This ancient Indian city is loud, it's chaotic and it's full of snow.
00:15I did not see that coming.
00:17Well, Hyderabad is home to Snow World, which claims to be the largest snow park in the world.
00:23I mean, I think we're a little bit underdressed, so let's get a move on, shall we?
00:26Hyderabad is also known as the City of Pearls. To this day, the city still produces most of India's pearls.
00:33You can pick up a necklace right here at the famous La Bazaar Jewel Market.
00:37Yes, and of course, like most of India's cities, Hyderabad is famed for its auto rickshaws.
00:44These three-wheeled contraptions are a staple on Indian roads and, to put it mildly, are renowned for their unpredictable driving style.
00:52Yeah, but no matter what these are capable of, I can guarantee it's not a patch on the absolute lunacy that is the Rebel Soapbox race.
00:59Yes, today the Carnival of Chaos rolls into town once again as amateur speed freaks from across the country pit their homemade machines against this custom-made course in the heart of the city.
01:11Who will take the crown in the City of Pearls and whose pickle is short of a few limes?
01:17All will be revealed very soon, but I have a feeling things are about to get spicier than a Geordie of Vindaloo.
01:22Darren, over to you.
01:24Thanks, Joella. Thanks, Becca. Really looking forward to this one today.
01:29Hyderabad really is a magnificent city, and if the driving of those auto rickshaws is any reflection on general driving standards, we're in for one chaotic evening.
01:39Fans have come out in their thousands to witness this gravity-fuelled spectacle which today will start in daylight and finish under floodlights.
01:49The teams in the pits are looking resplendent in their costumes and the soapbox designs are a wonderful assortment of design mishaps and creative genius.
01:59The course is 250 metres in length with a very gentle incline for the first 30 metres before it becomes a super-steep, heart-pounding descent.
02:09The first obstacle they hit is a fierce left-hand berm, catapulting them into a really quick straight where they're confronted by a brutal kicker
02:17with an integrated stair set. Survive that, and there's a very sharp right-handed hairpin followed by a massive wedge just before the finish line.
02:29We start today with homies. And what we do need to tell you about this, and do be aware of this, that it starts off a lot gentler than it becomes.
02:38It's 250 metres, and overall this is a pretty steep track for Red Bull Soapbox racers.
02:45You've just seen the performance score at the top. There is the creativity element to it. There we go.
02:50The judges will raise those numbers and give the score out. Then of course there is this issue of how fast you can get from top to bottom.
02:58So homies, group of friends, they've got a YouTube channel called Homies, where they do challenges.
03:04And I doubt there have been too many challenges as difficult as this one today.
03:09So it starts off, as you can see, nice and gentle. Now it really starts to kick in.
03:13They're going to get to a big left-hand berm. That's the first thing.
03:16There is a kicker that's got an integrated staircase coming up.
03:20And that's a real challenge for both the driver and the soapbox.
03:24Is it going to be strong enough? Can it survive it? Lands on the nose. Just about okay.
03:29The cricket helmets might come in. And if they get it wrong, they might have got it wrong there.
03:33Yes, they have. Couldn't get it around the corner.
03:36This is the problem, because it's starting to pick up speed all the time.
03:40The steeper that it gets, the faster it goes. And you've got to be in complete control when you come over that little element there.
03:47You see the wheels start to wobble. Can't get it round. Into the bales.
03:51And I think that's probably going to do it today for homies.
03:56So next up is Team Le Began. Nash is the driver.
04:01And a very common saying in Hyderabad is, don't talk Began to me.
04:07Which kind of means aubergine, as in don't lie to me.
04:10But I don't know where the aubergine bit comes in, but there we go.
04:13Took 25 days to build this. Looks like an oversized pram with a big green bit sticking out.
04:20Big wheels at the back, small ones at the front.
04:22Anybody who watches this, you know I don't particularly like that design.
04:25But let's see. Group of friends. They have a racing team manager.
04:29She's called Diana, so let's hope she's done the job well.
04:32There's the big left-handed berm. And they're going to go slightly higher, because they've got a bit of speed at the top.
04:36It looks like it's going to be nice and aerodynamic this one, doesn't it?
04:40I think it's too early to start waving those hands and a lot can happen between now and then.
04:44But if you can put a score on the board, it gives everybody something to aim at today.
04:49Took the kicker and the staircase remarkably well.
04:53Oh, the front's gone! The front wheel's gone!
04:57Just when I was praising the design, there's too much weight at the back.
05:02Not enough support at the front. And there is the problem.
05:06There's the landing. It starts to buckle.
05:09And once those pram wheels start to go, there is absolutely nothing that you can do about it.
05:15But as we see so often in Red Bull's Soapbox, we push all the way to the finish, and there we go.
05:28Hi, my name is Aakip Vani.
05:30Hi, I'm Shomi.
05:31And together we are representing the team.
05:33Indestructibles.
05:34Indestructibles.
05:35Indestructibles.
05:36We work together. I represent a design studio in Delhi, and we all of us thought, let's do something fun this time.
05:43Yeah, and this is the first work trip we've come without a laptop, so it's all about fun.
05:48I am the driver and...
05:50I'm Shomi. I'm the co-driver sitting behind him.
05:52We also have three other goofballs. So there's Kritesh, who's our costume designer.
05:57There's Arushi and Nikhil.
05:59Everyone's gonna be involved.
06:00And he's driving because he's the boss.
06:02I don't know how to drive, so I really felt like, you know, this would be one way to face the fears on the road,
06:07and you just need to be a little crazy to be able to do this, I think.
06:10The Nokia phone is known for its, you know, the hefty weight and everything,
06:15and how it can be a Horcrux and no one can destroy it.
06:18Why not just use that and, like, smash everything on its way?
06:22We did one day of engineering, and then we're like, yeah, we can do this.
06:26And if it breaks, it breaks.
06:28Yeah.
06:29While we were walking up the slope, we were like, this is hard to walk on.
06:32How are we gonna drive down this?
06:34I'm just worried that you're gonna be, you know, putting on the replays where we're crashing again and again and again.
06:40We don't even know what's there in price for us, but we just came in here with just wanting to have fun as a team.
06:47You can't destroy us, we'll destroy the track.
06:53So, time for the indestructibles.
06:55Aki, the driver.
06:56Sumi, the co-pilot.
06:58It's a tribute to the legendary Nokia 3310, commonly known as the brick.
07:03The indestructible phone.
07:04Soapboxes are very destructible.
07:07If this one's indestructible, then they've done a magnificent job.
07:11I must just say as well, so many spectators here today.
07:14The event sold out so quickly.
07:16And that's a really good performance score, 46 out of 50.
07:19That's the perfect possible start.
07:21And don't forget, we're starting in daylight.
07:23We're gonna finish in the dark.
07:25It really is a rarity for any kind of Red Bull Soapbox event.
07:28So, indestructibles on the way with this big left-handed berm to start with.
07:33Not too much speed.
07:34Oh, they've gone on the inside and caught the bails.
07:36It is destructible.
07:37Unless you get through the first obstacle, you've got no chance of dealing with the rest.
07:41I mean, in fairness to them, it's still in one piece.
07:43They said it was gonna be indestructible.
07:45It's that front wheel, the front left, just catching the straw.
07:48You can't get round the corner, and that's an issue.
07:51But, as it says on the tin, it's indestructible.
07:55So they're gonna carry on, if they possibly can.
07:57Although, having said that, the steering looks like it's shot to me.
08:02And they've come a long way for this today.
08:041600 kilometres they've travelled from New Delhi to Hyderabad.
08:09So why wouldn't you try and at least finish the course?
08:13Lovely smile on the face of Akib as well, who's really enjoying his day.
08:16They're gonna try and do the obstacles if they possibly can.
08:19And now they're marooned on the top.
08:22Go on, give them a push.
08:24This is where it all went wrong.
08:26Just got too tight.
08:28I think to me it was all a blur.
08:31And even though we took six hours, it went just like that.
08:35It just went in a flash, but there were moments where like, this is it, this is it.
08:39We made it through, so yeah.
08:41It's been a great start to the Red Bull Soapbox race so far.
08:45Such a strong start.
08:46And join us here after the break to find out which team will take to the start ramp next.
08:50See you in three.
09:00Welcome back to the Red Bull Soapbox race here in Hyderabad where things are getting very exciting.
09:06Oh yes, they're getting spicy indeed.
09:08Now our next team are getting ready to take to the ramp.
09:11So let's find out who will be setting off into the sunset.
09:16Well I can tell you exactly who's gonna be setting off into the sunset.
09:19They are Beats and Banter.
09:21And if you fancy a night out, this is your group.
09:23They run a house music night.
09:25They know how to have a good time.
09:26They're expecting the performance up there to be good.
09:29They're hoping the judges like it.
09:30And in the main, they generally did.
09:3238 out of 50.
09:33So Beats and Banter, local team from Hyderabad.
09:37And he looks precariously positioned, doesn't he?
09:40Up there.
09:41Rather him than me.
09:42Nice gentle start, then it gets steep.
09:44And so far today the teams are finding it virtually impossible
09:47to get from the start ramp to the finish line.
09:50Let's see whether this team can do it.
09:52Already seems to be losing a bit of control.
09:54Hitting that berm.
09:55Struggling, fighting with the Soapbox to get it round the corner.
09:58Astonishing pilot work there from Siddharth who got round.
10:02There's the snow.
10:03Never snows in Hyderabad.
10:04It does today.
10:05It's the beauty of the Red Bull Soapbox race.
10:08And they're doing OK.
10:09Beats and Banter.
10:10Flying down the course.
10:11Starting to celebrate.
10:12Don't forget they've still got the hairpin that scrubs off the speed.
10:15And then they've got to get down towards the...
10:17Oh!
10:18They've lost the wheel!
10:19Just when it seemed like it couldn't go wrong.
10:21It goes catastrophically wrong.
10:24The Beats and Banter.
10:26A four-wheel soapbox is fine.
10:28A three-wheel soapbox is no use to anybody.
10:32Beats and Banter are beaten in Hyderabad today.
10:37Yeah!
10:38But in the spirit of the competition, everybody gets to the finish.
10:43So all we've seen so far is absolute masterpieces.
10:58And I mean, had to end somewhere, didn't it?
11:01I mean, look at this one, Joella.
11:04What are you saying on creativity?
11:05All right.
11:06In terms of the creativity, all I'm seeing is exposed polystyrene, sellotape, screws that
11:12don't go anywhere, cable ties.
11:14I don't know what this is.
11:17Becca, tell me about the engineering side of it, please.
11:21I mean, engineering-wise, there's that.
11:25Essentially, this is two bikes just super glued together, which is hilarious because there
11:30are two seats, yet the driver sits right here on the spare metal.
11:34Very comfortable.
11:35It is looking very shaky for these guys.
11:37Give them some credit.
11:38It is a Mr. Bean-inspired team.
11:40So there's that.
11:41But yeah, all I can say is good luck, guys.
11:49Well, well, well.
11:50Let's have a look at the Bean wagon then, shall we?
11:53Pranav is the pilot who's got to get this thing from the start ramp to the finish line,
11:59modelled on Mr. Bean.
12:01The amazing thing is, inside the two bikes, they say they've got this steering mechanism,
12:05which is integrated through a collaborative steering system.
12:09They're confident it's going to work.
12:11They've lost a piece already.
12:12I mean, it looks a mess, doesn't it?
12:14I mean, you might say the Bean wagon has never been a soapbox,
12:19but we're going to see whether they can actually get this thing once it starts to steepen anywhere near the finish.
12:25I think this would be a miracle of modern science if this gets to the bottom.
12:31Keeping the speed off.
12:34And I suggest that's a wise thing to do.
12:36Very, very steady around the berm.
12:38I think those three running behind can actually overtake if they want to.
12:41Now they'll go through the snow.
12:43There we go.
12:44He's loving it, isn't he?
12:45Pranav.
12:46Big smile on his face.
12:47Mask of concentration.
12:49Now here's a challenge.
12:50This is the kicker into the integrated staircase, and they're over that just about.
12:54It's still in one piece.
12:56Whoever's welded this thing together, cable tied this thing together, fixed it in any way, shape or form with glue, blue tack, plasticine, whatever they've used, seems to have done a remarkable job.
13:08They're still going around the hairpin.
13:10They've got the wedge.
13:11There's the finish line.
13:12It looks like this thing's going to get there.
13:14How on earth have they managed it?
13:16Give him a push.
13:17Get him faster.
13:18110.76.
13:19Ladies and gentlemen, we have a finisher.
13:22Ladies and gentlemen, the bean wagon made it.
13:25Can you believe it?
13:26So much work has been put into so many soapboxes today.
13:30They've knocked it together in five minutes, and they've got to the finish.
13:33Oh, my God.
13:34Joella, are you okay?
13:35Oh, yeah, it's just been a long night.
13:36What happened?
13:37Oh, no, babes, I'm absolutely fine.
13:38That's not my leg.
13:39This team have literally taken one night to complete this beautification.
13:52Now, the chassis, 10 days, but still a considerably short amount of time for all of this.
13:58That does make sense, though, because these guys are part of India's largest prototyping
14:03firm, so they have a lot of experience in making things.
14:06They've even sent things out into space, apparently.
14:08They won't tell us what it was, but, I mean, this really should be a walk in the park for
14:12them.
14:13Yeah, top secret stuff, that is.
14:14I mean, let's get down to the technical bits as well, right?
14:17Yeah.
14:18Those wheels, they're bicycle wheels, which are some of the more flimsy wheels that we've seen.
14:21However, the base is super sturdy, it's super light.
14:25I think it's going to get down that course really fast.
14:27It will be fast for sure.
14:28My only concern is that it's quite bulky, it's very high.
14:31So, how is it going to take those turns?
14:33Oh, but with all that experience, Becca, it might give them a leg up on the competition.
14:38So, the cranking wagon, which looks big, and it looks cumbersome, and it looks difficult
14:47to steer, but it might just be sturdy enough and heavy enough to get a lot of speed up on
14:53this course today here in Hyderabad.
14:55I think this one's going to be fascinating.
14:57When it gets away from the gentle start and it starts to drop off, this one could be rapid.
15:02That's a great score.
15:03Performance score of 43.
15:05The creativity score is good as well.
15:07So, this team has really given itself a good solid base.
15:10Danush is the pilot.
15:12Now, if he can do his job, this could be a successful day for this team.
15:16From Hyderabad, local team.
15:18There's the berm, nice and quick.
15:19They've got speed because they've gone high.
15:21So, you know they've got it.
15:22Look at it go now.
15:23Look at the speed that it's picking up.
15:25This looks really good.
15:26Through the snow.
15:27Now the obstacles are going to start to come.
15:29Dodge the bales.
15:30Hit that kicker.
15:31Down the integrated staircase.
15:33Now he's going to hold it firm because he's got this hairpin coming up.
15:36That's going to scrub the speed.
15:38Can he get it going again?
15:39The wedge just before the finish.
15:41This is looking fantastic.
15:43Misses the wedge out.
15:44Gets towards the finish line.
15:45Let's have a look at the time.
15:4741.15.
15:48Outstanding.
15:49The crank and wagon.
15:51Creative.
15:52The performance impressive.
15:53The speed.
15:54The quickest we've seen so far today.
15:56That's a fantastic performance by this team.
15:59Dhanoush, the pilot, did a wonderful job.
16:02And they've set the standard.
16:04Set the target.
16:05Fantastic performance all round.
16:09So next we have team Hera Ferry.
16:12And this is a family team.
16:13They're all Hera Ferry fanatics.
16:15Hera Ferry is an incredibly popular Indian comedy movie franchise.
16:19And the soapbox is fuelled by the mantra
16:22chasing money, money, and more money to the finish line.
16:28It's quite high though, isn't it?
16:30And we've seen these in the past just lose a little bit of balance
16:33when it really matters.
16:34It's built on a nice solid base.
16:36The axle isn't too wide.
16:38So it's going to have that sturdiness at the bottom.
16:40But it's just that weight at the top.
16:42And the fact that he's going backwards.
16:44There'll be somebody else in there doing the steering.
16:46Don't worry about that.
16:47I've fallen for this kind of trick in the past.
16:49I'm not going to fall for it today.
16:50Right then.
16:51Here we go.
16:52Here's the burn.
16:53Big left-hander.
16:54Here's the problem.
16:55Money everywhere.
16:56And that just tipped up.
16:58And there's the issue.
16:59It starts to buckle.
17:00There's too much weight.
17:01Too high.
17:02No balance.
17:03Over you go.
17:04And I told you somebody else was in there.
17:05There he is.
17:06That's just what happens.
17:08You've got a soapbox like that.
17:09When you've got the tall ones,
17:11you've got to be very careful.
17:13Too much speed.
17:14Too much turning.
17:15And you can lose your cash.
17:17He knows.
17:18That's Rakshit who's up there.
17:20And he knew that he was coming out.
17:22I'm Soumya.
17:26And I'm Kalyani.
17:28We are from the team Hubmobile.
17:31There are five members in our team.
17:33We have Sartak.
17:34Hari.
17:35And Blessin.
17:37We are from Bangalore.
17:38That's a four-day trip to us.
17:40It's 900 kilometers away from Hyderabad.
17:43We found a person who can get his truck
17:46and drive our vehicle till here.
17:48We had to bubble wrap it to make sure
17:50it comes in one piece from our place till here.
17:54We are from a media agency.
17:56All we do is shoot content.
17:58That's the reason we came up with the concept
18:00with what if our mobile is a camera itself.
18:04And our camera has fiery wings
18:07because we're all young.
18:08We're full of energy.
18:10We are trying to integrate our mascot,
18:13our company's mascot into it,
18:15which is a traffic cone.
18:17If you see a cone,
18:18it's supposed to tell you caution or stop
18:20or just stop and look.
18:22So we're trying to tell people stop and look towards us.
18:27When we came across this,
18:29it sounded like a challenge to us
18:31and we really wanted to do something different for a change.
18:34I was very nervous because I did not expect the topography to be this steep.
18:41Yeah.
18:42I'm just, I'm still very nervous.
18:44I'll be driving the mobile.
18:47And we're gonna be running behind her to make sure she's safe.
18:51I'm a biker myself.
18:53I also have done motorsport racing,
18:56like the bike racing.
18:57We trust her with this.
18:59We're gonna win for sure.
19:04So Hubbabil,
19:05and this team is extremely proud of their Soapbox creation.
19:08So much so, as you heard,
19:10it's been wrapped in bubble wrap to get it this far.
19:12They're also the first team in the history of the competition
19:15that are using a traffic cone as any kind of mascot.
19:18They also say that every bump is a high-five
19:22in disguise.
19:23If that's the case,
19:24they'll have sore hands by the time they get down to the bottom
19:26because this is gonna be a very bumpy ride.
19:29A lot of hard work got into it.
19:31Let's see whether it all comes to fruition
19:33here in Hyderabad today.
19:35Nice steady start at the top
19:37and they've already admitted,
19:38like a lot of teams today,
19:40they are very nervous about the steepness of the course.
19:43When it does start to bite,
19:45you've got to keep your wits about you.
19:47A little wobble there through the berm,
19:49but fine, it's okay.
19:50I think caution is one of the elements here for Hubmobile.
19:54The team running down behind
19:56and so far so good through the snow.
19:59There we go.
20:00Coming up now through these little bales
20:02and we'll see how this big obstacle,
20:04the kicker with the integrated staircase does.
20:07Nice and straight.
20:08Oh, the wheels are just starting to go.
20:10It's just started to bow at the front now.
20:12Is it gonna be strong enough, that axle with those small wheels,
20:15strong enough to hold it together down to the finish?
20:18This is the hairpin.
20:19All the speed goes here.
20:20Everybody seems to want to avoid the wedge.
20:22This is now a difficult soapbox to steer,
20:25but they are gonna get to the finish line.
20:27They are gonna give us the time.
20:28It's 102.51 and they can be proud of their work today.
20:32They spent over 500 hours putting this soapbox together
20:36and they were able to get to the finish, set a time.
20:39And is that a high five or is that a bump in the road?
20:42I am excited, I'm thrilled.
20:46I don't know what I'm talking.
20:48It was damn good.
20:50The second obstacle is the thing that you know
20:52I had if I could clear it or not.
20:54But I killed it.
20:55I eased it.
20:56I'm so happy.
21:01And it is disco fever right now
21:03as we're joined by Team GT.
21:05How are you feeling right now?
21:07We're feeling really great.
21:08The energy here is amazing.
21:10Everybody is creative.
21:11So we're just ready to go.
21:12OK.
21:13Yes.
21:14Well, I don't know if you guys know
21:15but there is actually a history
21:16of the glitter ball here at Soapbox Race.
21:19OK.
21:20There's the king.
21:21Over you go.
21:22Down we go and he's gone already.
21:24Yeah.
21:28Well, join us after the break
21:29where we will see if they're gonna bust a move
21:31or if it's gonna be murder on the dance floor.
21:34So before the break we caught up with Disco GT
21:46and they're about to take to the ramp.
21:48Yes, let's see how they roll down that hill.
21:51Oh, you like that?
21:52Oh, you like that?
21:53I like that.
21:54I like this.
21:58So Disco GT and as you've seen already
22:01Disco balls in the past have ended up in giant heaps
22:04on the tarmac.
22:05Sri is the driver.
22:07The team say they will be dazzling the dance floor,
22:10dazzling the track with our groovy vehicle
22:12that puts the retro into retro fit.
22:16They work together at a bar at a club
22:18and I hope they've not put this Soapbox together after hours.
22:20Hope the minds were clear
22:22when they were able to do the designing of the building.
22:24That's the performance score, which is not bad.
22:26And now let's see what Sri can do
22:28in regards to getting this Soapbox from the top to the bottom.
22:32Nice by design, nice sturdy axles, not too wide.
22:36The wheel's nice and small, should be okay.
22:38And he's sitting nice and proud.
22:40The only concern I've got is the handlebar steering
22:42and that's taking it wide up the berm.
22:45I just wondered for a second
22:46if he was going to be able to manage to turn left.
22:48Well enough there,
22:49but he's got real speed now through the snow.
22:51Coming down towards the kicker.
22:53The steps on the other side.
22:54Here he comes.
22:55Bang in the centre.
22:56Over he goes.
22:57Oh, he's lost it.
22:58Lost it straight into the bails.
23:00Just when it was going so well.
23:02He was brave enough to keep the speed on.
23:04Brave enough to go for the middle of the obstacle,
23:06but he lands just slightly skew-width.
23:08And that's where it all goes wrong.
23:11There's enough of it left, though,
23:13to get him down towards the finish.
23:14Look at that wheel wobbling at the back.
23:16That's like some of the people from their bar on the way home
23:18on a Saturday night.
23:19Wobbling here, wobbling there.
23:21Around the hip, in they go.
23:22Don't go anywhere near the wedge.
23:24Leave the wedge alone when you get round the corner.
23:26It won't survive the wedge.
23:28They've done the sensible thing.
23:30Down towards the finish line.
23:31Let's have a look at the time.
23:32He looks so disappointed, doesn't he, Sri?
23:35109.87.
23:37So much speed there.
23:39Look how high he gets.
23:40We haven't seen too many that high,
23:42and that's where it goes wrong, and he knows it.
23:44Yes, we are here with the team Kith & Kin 2.0,
24:00and it's 2.0 because they already took part
24:02in the 2016 Soapbox races.
24:05It's a family affair, by the way,
24:07and they came second place,
24:08so you already know this time round
24:10they're going to try and go for that first.
24:12Yeah, they did very, very well in Mumbai,
24:15and, I mean, I feel like they're going to learn
24:17from all of their mistakes back then
24:19and take it to first place.
24:20I mean, the fact that it's a whole family behind this,
24:23the dad is actually a mechanic,
24:25so surely this is going to make the most sense.
24:28I mean, creatively it looks great.
24:30I love the bobbing head feature,
24:32the arms race as it goes down the hill,
24:34the little weapons.
24:35So it looks good, and inside looks good too, Jo.
24:38Inside it's looking good.
24:39The dad is definitely a mechanic.
24:41I can see we've got front and rear suspension.
24:43It's looking super stable.
24:44This chair is looking real comfortable as well,
24:47and we did have a chat with the team.
24:49They've got a very special surprise at the beginning.
24:51I don't want to spoil it for you,
24:52but I'm really excited to see this go down the track.
24:55Yeah, man, we love a surprise for sure.
24:58No reason why this one will not speed down the hill
25:01into first place, but again, this is the Soapbox race,
25:03so we will find out if it will be a turtle disaster.
25:11So time for Kith and Kin,
25:13and this teenage mutant ninja turtle inspired Soapbox,
25:18and the crowd in Hyderabad get to see it for the first time,
25:21and that lady there is mightily impressed.
25:24So the team is made up of all kind of family members,
25:27including the 94-year-old grandfather of the group,
25:30and I'm pleased to say that he's not the pilot.
25:32That's going to be Darius.
25:33He's going to try and get it from top to bottom.
25:3540 out of 50 on the performance score, and here we go.
25:37There's a bit of paper mache at the front to design the turtle's head.
25:41We'll see whether that is there by the end of the run,
25:45and there's a lot of moving parts on this.
25:47The creativity very impressive.
25:48It looks really good on the eye.
25:50They've worked very hard, this team,
25:51and Darius is off to a nice start,
25:54just taking it nice and gently around the berm,
25:57and now we really start to pick up speed.
25:59The bails just to negotiate, then it's the kicker,
26:02and this mean green turtle machine is through the snow,
26:06and tearing down towards the finish here in Hyderabad.
26:09Look at his face, look at the concentration.
26:12Doesn't take his eyes off the road at all,
26:14and I think he's going through every possible emotion on the way down.
26:19Now get round the hairpin.
26:21Here we go, that takes the speed off.
26:23Get away from the wedge, get towards the finish.
26:25Let's have a look at the time.
26:27It's going to be a good one, I think.
26:28It's 49.32.
26:30It's a fantastic-looking soapbox.
26:33It was still in pristine working order by the time they got to the finish,
26:38and that's outstanding.
26:40All the credit goes to Tony.
26:42I mean, he was the one behind it.
26:44Building it, the ideas, the hands, legs moving,
26:46the wobble-bobbling head, the adrenaline, it's amazing.
26:50The feeling of completing the race.
26:52I feel we got to win it.
26:53I feel it.
26:54I feel it right now.
26:55I feel the energy, and I feel we got to win.
26:57No doubt about it.
26:59So Smart Bazaar come next.
27:01One of the largest grocery retail chains in the whole of India,
27:06and the team is made up of employees from the company.
27:10The big question today, can they deliver?
27:13Smart Bazaar looks nice, looks like it's got a chance.
27:16Performance score of 32, could have been better.
27:19That's out of 50, don't forget.
27:21This kind of design of soapbox has been successful in the past.
27:24The small ones, which look relatively straightforward to control,
27:28and we will see what they're able to do.
27:31First challenge, as always, for everybody today is this verb.
27:35Some choose to go high, some choose to try and go low,
27:38and there have been levels of success for everybody so far today.
27:42Now the speed's going to kick in.
27:44It really is going to kick in.
27:45The onboard shot shows you through the snow.
27:46Make sure you wipe your eyes.
27:48Make sure you can still see where you're going.
27:50Make sure you don't get snow on the glasses.
27:52Make sure you celebrate with a cry.
27:54He's lost a load of it, look at that.
27:56It disintegrated on landing.
27:58I think he might have got smashed on the forehead by the helmet too,
28:01but he's still going.
28:02Fair play.
28:03Still moving down towards this hairpin.
28:05There's the wedge.
28:06He's going to go over the wedge.
28:07Not many people.
28:08Oh, he's stuck on top of the wedge.
28:11He's only gone and stacked it.
28:12Can't believe it.
28:13She says, why did you go up there?
28:15Nobody else has done that today.
28:17Now they can't move it.
28:19Now it just looks like a shopping trolley with massive wheels.
28:22All the hard work's gone for nothing.
28:24105.21.
28:26If you miss the wedge, you might win the day.
28:29What is he thinking about?
28:30He's fine through there despite the damage.
28:33It was salvageable at that point.
28:35But don't go over the wedge.
28:37My word.
28:38What is he thinking?
28:42I must say, even by Red Bull's soapbox race standards,
28:46this is slightly bizarre.
28:47When they got here today, the soapbox wasn't finished.
28:50They've never tested it.
28:51It's one of the steepest courses that we've ever had.
28:55And they've got no idea, Mummy's miscalculated mayhem,
28:58whether this thing is actually going to work or not.
29:01I mean, this could be miscalculated mayhem in more ways than one.
29:0428 out of 50.
29:05They've got a lot of work to do here.
29:07So Saketh is the pilot.
29:10And I think we wish it well.
29:11I think that's all we could do at this stage,
29:13because nobody really knows.
29:14And that's probably why he's so slow at the top,
29:16because he doesn't know either.
29:18I mean, most of the time,
29:19people at least roll it down the drive or something
29:21to see if it's actually...
29:22Oh, look at him round there!
29:23Oh, he's coming out the side!
29:24No, he's not!
29:25He nearly is!
29:26If he wasn't held in the steering wheel,
29:28he would have been in the front row!
29:29His seat's gone!
29:30This is falling to pieces!
29:32He's all over the place!
29:33It's an absolute shambles!
29:35Of course it was going to be a shambles!
29:37It wasn't finished when they arrived today!
29:40They've never tested it!
29:42Look at the state of it!
29:43And if I were you,
29:44I'd run away from it too!
29:46They're going to do the obstacles on foot!
29:48That might have been the right idea at the start!
29:51What an absolute mess!
29:53I can't believe it!
29:54Look at him!
29:55He's having the time of his life!
29:57They just weren't prepared!
29:59No preparation whatsoever!
30:01Fixing it up in the pits!
30:02Hoping for the best!
30:03Disaster strikes!
30:05Mummy's Miscalculated Mayhem!
30:07One of the most disastrous soapbox efforts we've ever seen!
30:12Unbelievable!
30:17So this is the Buttmobile!
30:19A superhero-themed team!
30:22And they've driven 24 hours to get this soapbox here!
30:25700 kilometres or thereabouts!
30:28A Batmobile with a huge butt!
30:31I'm told is the description!
30:33They're from Goa!
30:34Sidesh is going to be the driver!
30:36And it's made completely of recycled materials!
30:39The front's made of cane!
30:41The only thing that's new is the brake cables!
30:43It's a good job they've got nice fresh ones of those!
30:46Because they're going to need it!
30:47And off we go!
30:48Looks like it could be okay!
30:50The moment of truth is here!
30:52And the Cape Crusader is on his way down in Hyderabad!
30:56Don't get too close to those bales!
30:57That can be an issue!
30:58Takes you high then around the berm which is fine!
31:00That then means that as you drop off the berm you get speed earlier than you would do if you went tighter!
31:06The fella behind's got a job to keep up!
31:08That's how quick they're going!
31:09Through the snow!
31:10Missed the bay!
31:11Oh!
31:12Just catches it!
31:13Think he might just survive it!
31:14That could have been terminal but it's not!
31:15But they have lost speed!
31:16Over the kicker!
31:17Down the steps!
31:18Get the speed back up again if you can!
31:20Because you're going to scud plenty off coming around this hairpin!
31:23I mean it's nice and smooth!
31:24He's doing a fine job!
31:25The driver here!
31:26And he's going to do the wedge!
31:28Is he quick enough?
31:29He does get over the wedge!
31:30And now he's going to get to the finish in 50.12!
31:33That's not bad by any stretch!
31:35I just wonder if he would have been slightly quicker!
31:37A if he'd avoided that!
31:38And B if he wouldn't have gone over the wedge at the end!
31:41But that's a nice run by the Bukmobile!
31:44Our team name is?
31:46Biryani Ki Sawari!
31:48The members of our team are...
31:53Mithilesh!
31:54He's the driver!
31:55He has a life insurance!
31:56So he's the driver!
31:57I'm Rahul!
31:58I'm the co-pilot!
31:59And he's Rishabh Jain!
32:01We have one more teammate who's Harsho Adhan!
32:04We study in the same college!
32:06We are all the product designers!
32:08We have done lots of crazy things but we haven't built anything crazy yet!
32:11Yeah!
32:12For the automobile it was the first thing!
32:14Yeah!
32:15But we are excited what we made!
32:16We are used to making installations that are set on walls or stationary objects basically!
32:20But this is a moving object!
32:21This is new to us!
32:23Everyone in Hyderabad basically knows biryani!
32:25There is not a single soul who doesn't!
32:27So we wanted to impress the audience!
32:29That's our main aim!
32:30That's why I chose the Biryani Ki Sawari!
32:32The pot!
32:33Which have wheels!
32:34And the biryani!
32:35As a driver I will be like a chicken leg piece!
32:37Dressed like a chicken leg piece!
32:38Those will be the chefs!
32:39We'll put him inside the pot!
32:42The skit will consist of a dance and a drama!
32:46It's gonna be very crazy!
32:47We don't want to spoil anything!
32:48Yeah!
32:49Biryani Ki Sawari!
32:51There's a lot of craziness in all of us!
32:54Yeah!
32:55That's why this design happened!
32:57I'll describe soapbox race as outrageous!
33:00Craziness!
33:01And fun!
33:02We are designers!
33:03We want to design something!
33:04And it is a very good place to represent our design!
33:06That's why we chose this!
33:07And once in a lifetime of opportunity we didn't want to miss it!
33:10We are here to win!
33:11We will live in it!
33:12We know that!
33:13Combine this with it!
33:18So this is a team to make you hungry!
33:20Biryani Ki Sawari!
33:22Hyderabad of course famous for the biryani dish!
33:25Which is made up of rice, meat and spices!
33:27If you haven't had one before!
33:29What are you playing at?
33:30Right!
33:31Group of students from Hyderabad!
33:32Representing their hometown!
33:34And in we go!
33:35The chickens in the driver's seat!
33:37We'll see what happens!
33:3836 out of 50 on the performance!
33:40The flags are raised!
33:41And Biryani Ki Sawari is on its way down!
33:46Can this little hotpot of taste and goodness be the winning formula here in Hyderabad today?
33:54Right there!
33:55Round this berg!
33:56Just rising a little bit!
33:58Just nipping the edge of it on the way round!
34:00Fantastic!
34:01He's celebrating already!
34:02Mithilesh!
34:03We'll see whether he's the man for the job today!
34:05Through the snow!
34:06No problem to this point!
34:08Coming down towards the kicker!
34:09Flies the kicker nice and straight!
34:11That's a really good sign!
34:12Just a little wobble at the back!
34:13Look!
34:14The axle's just a little bit shaky!
34:15Let's hope that holds firm!
34:16This looks like a good time!
34:18It's been really quick!
34:19They've even kept the speed on around the hairpin!
34:21Now get it moving!
34:22Get it towards the finish line!
34:23Let's have a look at the time!
34:2442.63!
34:26Only a second outside!
34:27The best time of the day!
34:29Biryani!
34:30Kisawari!
34:31Hot!
34:32Spicy!
34:33Fantastic!
34:34What a job in Hyderabad today!
34:35Good design!
34:36Good performance!
34:37A lot of speed!
34:38Fantastically done!
34:39It went better than we expected!
34:40A lot better!
34:41Overall we lost a few parts but who cares!
34:42We finished!
34:43But the chicken is here!
34:44Chicken without the bone!
34:45But the chicken is here!
34:46That's what matters, right?
34:47We all know!
34:48Yes, what a festival it has been here today!
34:59It feels like all of India's billion people have come here to get a taste of the action!
35:03Yeah!
35:04The vibe has been electric all day long and when we come back our final few teams will be speeding
35:10down this course and will be crowning our winner!
35:13I'm so excited!
35:14Don't go anywhere alright!
35:15Hello and welcome back to the final part of the Red Bull Soapbox race here in Hyderabad where
35:30it has all been going off!
35:31What a day isn't it?
35:32It's been incredible and our last few teams are getting ready to touch that start ramp!
35:37Darren, what's going on?
35:39Well what's not going on in Hyderabad today?
35:41It's been a fantastic day!
35:42We started in bright sunshine, we're going to finish in darkness which hardly ever happens
35:47for a Red Bull Soapbox race event and Captain Pop Asian Cinemas are the next team!
35:54It's a bit of a flat performance though that you're just not that impressed!
35:58Less than 50% of what's available, 24 out of 50!
36:02Jagadish is the pilot, the steering wheel's all over the place!
36:06Look at it, the steering wheel's come off and it's hands!
36:09What are they doing?
36:11The popcorn being thrown all over the place, the moment they came down the start ramp
36:15and the steering wheel had gone!
36:17The whole steering column moved!
36:19The spectators don't know what to make of it!
36:22Look at it, watch this!
36:23It's just come off of his hands, look at it!
36:25What an absolute disaster!
36:27At least they've got the popcorn to keep them going I suppose!
36:33I'm Sajan and I'm from Team Raging Ball
36:36I'm Priyanshwavatam and I'm from Team Raging Ball
36:39We study in the same university and we all study design
36:42We have two other members and they're gonna be the driver and the co-driver
36:46They're really pressed about making the chassis right now
36:49since they're gonna be the one on the slope!
36:51We did have some mess-ups in the shipping
36:54I mean some stuff got crushed
36:56We're only using the packaging material to rebuild it
36:59that it had been shipped in
37:01I think that's probably the only plastic in the cart
37:03All of the exterior of our cart is made only from trash
37:07The only waste we've produced I would say is like five rolls of packing tape
37:12Our soapbox is basically built around two bowling pins
37:17who are running from a bowling ball
37:19and there's going to be a bowling ball behind that's gonna be chasing them
37:22The bowling pins are gonna be our drivers
37:24and it just looks like they're taking off in flames
37:27Our group is called Jeetna Hai which means we have to win
37:31On the track just let go of all your inhibitions and then roll down
37:36We have one guy on our team who's crazy about driving
37:40He takes cars on rent just for joyrides
37:43So it wasn't even a question
37:45He had to be the one to drive
37:48We're excited
37:50And terrified
37:51Slightly nervous
37:52No, we're not terrified
37:54We're on no sleep right now
37:55We really gotta go
37:56We have to finish building our soapbox
37:58Okay then raging ball and the team's mantra is in the world of bowling epic clashes are bound to happen
38:11This is an epic clash today in the Hyderabad darkness
38:15That's the performance up there
38:16There's a lot of hands shaking but not too much else
38:1928 that's out of 50
38:22So the judges are difficult to impress today
38:26But let's see what this soapbox can do
38:29Wide axle, quite thick wheels
38:31Nice and low to the ground
38:33It's got that big ball at the back, that bowling ball
38:35Whether that's a help or a hindrance
38:37Remains to be seen
38:39They've travelled two and a half thousand kilometres to be here today
38:42Which must be the furthest that any team's travelled to enter a soapbox race
38:47That's about London and Greece and then a little bit more
38:49They've started off really well
38:51This is where the speed kicks in
38:53Coming up towards the kicker
38:54Gliding through the bales
38:56Here's the kicker and then the steps
38:57Oh he's wonky
38:58He went into it off balance
38:59Went into it offline
39:01Falls out the front
39:02Exit stage left
39:04And raging ball has gone flying into the straw bales
39:07That's the issue
39:08Hit it slightly off centre
39:09When you hit it slightly off centre
39:11You're gonna come a cropper
39:12And that's exactly what happened there
39:14And there's not a great deal left of it now
39:17They're gonna try and push it
39:18Avoid the wedge at all costs
39:20And they're gonna get down there to the finish
39:22But it's gonna be no kind of time
39:24If they actually make it
39:25I mean it's all over the place now
39:26217.06
39:28I mean that's where it went wrong
39:30As soon as he's offline
39:31There's nothing you can do about that
39:33Loads of speed
39:34No accuracy
39:35I mean we lost the steering wheel midway
39:38But our energy is still there
39:40We had so much fun
39:41We had so much fun
39:42Let's go
39:43We didn't know anything
39:44Before making the servers of power
39:46So time for the final team of the day
39:51Yukusa
39:52And Sandeep is gonna be the driver
39:55It's the name of the cafe in Hyderabad
39:57It means taste in Croatian
40:00And for those of you out there
40:01Who like to know that kind of thing
40:03And Sandeep is gonna be the driver
40:05Is the owner of the cafe
40:07They build race cars
40:08Sandeep is a seven time national champion
40:10For motorcycle racing in India
40:13So he's a real local celebrity
40:15And he's under a fair deal of pressure
40:17He's gotta get this right
40:18Reputations can be made or broken
40:20Very very quickly
40:21In Red Bull Soapbox racing
40:23So down he comes
40:24Sat in that big coffee cup
40:25Very close to the bales
40:27He's gonna go around this berm
40:28Goes nice and high
40:29This is where he's gonna pick up the speed
40:31Now this really is the moment of truth
40:32And it's starting to wobble
40:34He's out
40:35He's out
40:36It was starting to go
40:38And it was like an old oak tree
40:40That was being blown in the wind
40:42And it was starting to bend
40:43And you knew that it was gonna go
40:45And there was nothing that Sandeep could do
40:47To stay in the coffee cup
40:49And he spilled out onto the tarmac
40:51Down he goes
40:52Down he goes
40:53Nothing they could do
40:54A seven time national motorcycling champion
40:57Humiliated in Hyderabad by poor design
41:03Well it's been a brilliant evening's racing
41:05And the scores are in
41:06And I can tell you

41:35It is actually energetic
41:37I mean you were speeding down that course
41:39What was going through your mind?
41:40So I was not in my senses
41:42Until like
41:43Until a point of time
41:44And then I didn't use the brakes
41:46Until the last curve
41:47Like it was crazy
41:48It was fast
41:49It was crazy
41:50Well that's the winning secret

42:20Another Red Bull Soapbox race
42:22done and dusted
42:23Yes
42:24I gotta say though
42:25India turned up
42:26That's right
42:27Like everybody went in when it came to the creativity
42:28the outfit, the soapboxes themselves
42:31the performances
42:32There we go, another Red Bull soapbox race done and dusted.
42:35I've got to say, though, India turned up.
42:38Like, everybody went in when it came to the creativity.
42:41The outfits, the soapboxes themselves, the performances.
42:45Yes, 100%, I agree.
42:47I mean, it was hot, and I'm not just talking about the heat,
42:49Becca, all right?
42:50The vibes were high, everyone was great.
42:52Did you have a fave?
42:54Yeah, I did.
42:55The mummy's miscalculated mayhem, they were called.
42:58Yo, the way the soapbox just fell apart behind him,
43:01and he kept going, dragging his bum along the floor.
43:04Made it to the end.
43:05Yeah, I was very impressed.
43:06How about you?
43:07For me, it's got to be Kiff and Kin 2.0, the turtle, of course,
43:10those little arms moving.
43:12It was so nicely done, you know,
43:14and they'd done so well to make second place as well.
43:18It was great, it was really, really great.
43:19Everybody was very impressive this year, for sure.
43:21Yes, 100%.
43:22But of course, none of this would be possible
43:24without all these amazing teams,
43:26all these amazing people who came to watch,
43:29the judges, and of course, you.
43:31So thank you so much for watching,
43:32and we'll see you next time.
