First term MP Jess Wilson has been elected to lead the Victorian Liberals the first woman to do so in the state's history. Ms Wilson who represents the seat of Kew rolled former leader Brad Battin who had only been in the job since December. She becomes the third opposition leader in 11 months with the party plagued by internal division. She says her main priorities are to bring the budget under control reduce crime and make home ownership more accessible for all.

00:00Today, the Liberal Party Room spoke very clearly.
00:05We elected a team that is representative of all parts of not only Victoria but of the
00:10Party Room.
00:11And that is a reason why we are now going to be so firmly focused on winning the next
00:15election.
00:16Because Victorians can't afford us not to be focused on that.
00:19They need us.
00:20They need us to be working in their interests every single day.
00:24And that's why I'll say every single day that I'm in their corner working for their
00:27best interests.
00:28We need to absolutely focus on winning the next election.
00:32And today, the Liberal Party Room spoke and elected me as their leader to take them to
00:36the next election.
00:37To ensure that when we are going up every day, focusing on the fact that we need to deliver
00:44for the priorities of Victorians.
00:46We have a government that has seen financial mismanagement in this state deliver net debt
00:51soaring towards $200 billion.
00:54An interest bill every single day over $20 million.
00:58That is the state of the finances here in Victoria.
01:00And my focus will be to get the budget back under control so we can deliver for the essential
01:07services of Victorians.
