00:00I
00:30This week on Rides Down Under Workshop Wars, Alan and Shane continue the rust repairs on
00:37the HMAS Pacer.
00:39My daughter Evelyn takes us on a guided tour of the Dynamotive Workshop.
00:44Dave from Styling Automotive updates us on some of his latest new builds.
00:49Luke Mitchell from Evil Garage and Jesse from Oswheels begin work on transforming the 164
00:56by-cast model into a real fire-breathing monster burnout drag car.
01:00This HQ beast will be running a 1500 horsepower LS V8.
01:06It's called the Smoke Bomber and you can purchase your own Oswheels model set, but first we head
01:12to Brisbane for Motorfest.
01:26Today, we've got something special.
01:32We are here at the Peninsula Motorfest and it's been absolutely awesome.
01:36Now this is just a Saturday, we're here at the waterfront.
01:40There are cars, there are stalls, there are food, there's everything here.
01:44So we're going to go for a walk, have a chat to some of the owners and have an awesome day.
01:48Let's go.
01:58We're with Todd from Superformance.
02:00Superformance is one of the main sponsors of today's event.
02:03Mate, you've done a great job with the store here today.
02:05You've got all the good stuff, haven't you?
02:07Cool, thank you, yeah.
02:08We brought out all the big blingy stuff, the big fancy wheels, the engine.
02:12And the cars.
02:13Cars, five cars, so make a bit of a presence and get the name out there.
02:17We brought some of the projects, some of the finished cars as well.
02:20Yeah, we feel like everyone really likes the project side of the business and like seeing
02:24how the product's actually made into the nice shiny car.
02:27So it's been a pretty hot topic around today.
02:30Everyone's been standing around it and asking lots of questions, which is awesome.
02:34Everyone asks nice technical questions, which is awesome.
02:36Yeah.
02:37Which is where I come in and no fluff about it, I just tell them how it's made and how much
02:40effort actually goes into it.
02:42And people just like learning on how long things actually do take, you know.
02:45So they do take a long time to build a car.
02:48And this just shows you the bare bones and the start of the project effectively.
02:51And it's cool to have that there, to have, you know, the project car that you've got.
02:54And of course the example of the finished vehicles all around.
02:57So it's just a great conversational perspective to have people to see from start, middle, finish,
03:03and obviously all the products that you offer.
03:05Definitely, definitely.
03:06I think that's what we tried to achieve today is bring a bit of everything.
03:09We're not trying to concentrate on the performance parts.
03:12I think the business has grown out of just the performance parts and fittings and trying
03:17to push more of the complete car build and all our front ends and suspension stuff we do,
03:20mate.
03:21All in all, a really good event this weekend.
03:26We're happy to sponsor it.
03:27It's all going to a very good cause, great charity, and we're happy to be here.
03:35There's a lot of really nice cars here, but there's also some real, true car guys that
03:45cruise all the time, are at every event around here.
03:49That's this guy, Nobby.
03:50Now, dude, you've got your vacationer behind us.
03:53We do.
03:54Awesome rig.
03:55This started off as a six cylinder, didn't it?
03:57Yep, 202, four speed.
03:58You've got the Boyd Coddington's on there now.
04:00You've got the nice offset.
04:01The thing's starting to look pretty tough.
04:02Yep, just need some horsepower.
04:03Yeah, but this is an awesome car because it's proven to be very reliable because you
04:07are at nearly every single event, every weekend.
04:11I think Redcliffe's sick of seeing it, eh?
04:14It's out all the time.
04:16It was absolutely 100% original when I picked it up five years ago.
04:20Nothing had been changed.
04:21It's still got the push button radio and the dash, and yeah, it's just evolved into what
04:25it is now with the help of some very good mates and was only meant to just be a cool cruiser,
04:30which it is what it is.
04:31Just hit the key, go for a drive.
04:33It hasn't let me down yet.
04:34We've got Sean from Road Rage.
04:40Now, before we get to what Road Rage is, what do you think about the event, mate?
04:43How cool is it?
04:44It's awesome, dude.
04:45It really is.
04:46Look how many people have turned up.
04:48Tell us a little bit about Road Rage.
04:50We started off as an American importer.
04:53In the early days, we was actually building cars.
04:55And then we just found that our niche was importing vehicles and selling them.
05:00So we've got lots of diverse parts of the business as well.
05:03We do a lot of film work.
05:05We build props and vehicles for films as well.
05:09So we've done so many sides of the business, but obviously the cars is the big part of it.
05:16This thing is almost a bit of a SEMA build, this car.
05:26It's got the custom interior, the engine bay.
05:29It's on bags too, right?
05:30It is.
05:31It's a 57 pickup.
05:32Mate, tell us about this build.
05:33So it started six years ago.
05:35Founded in a paddock in Townsville.
05:38Only had a base idea for the build, you know, a base level, and it just sort of started to evolve.
05:43The guys at Cool Cars and Customs in Townsville did the whole build.
05:46So I'm guessing this was a full custom chassis.
05:48There's a metre of the original chassis.
05:50That's fair, right?
05:51About a metre.
05:52That's good.
05:53For the purists.
05:54Correct.
05:55With that colour, it's such a modern touch on a classic body.
05:59Yeah.
06:00And it just works.
06:01It does.
06:02We started out with a Chorus Grey, which is a Range Rover colour.
06:04And then we were looking at what they call a Chevy Bronze Mist, which has a bronze speckle through it.
06:09So actually, what makes my heart sing is that colour is a custom design by a third year, early 20s spray painter.
06:16So it's his custom colour.
06:18So there is no colour like it.
06:19Mate, it is such a nice truck.
06:21Yeah.
06:25Good.
06:26Here's your first test.
06:27Let's go.
06:28Alright, if you have a go-to.
06:29All right.
06:30Guys, we've got Matt here.
06:32He's beautiful.
06:3362 Impala.
06:34Tell us about this monster that you've got here.
06:36How long did this take you to put together?
06:382006.
06:39I started that, but it only recently completed, a couple of years ago.
06:43That's 62 Impala, sitting on an air ride with an 871 blowing 4.54 in it.
06:50It sounds tough too.
06:52But it looks so good.
06:53the bead locks in the back it's dropped on its guts the beautiful red interior and of course the
06:58motor sticking out the bonnet all in black it's just such a good mix just want to keep that black
07:02and red combination with a factory red interior in it and you drive it all the time hey it's a
07:07reliable piece it is a reliable piece yeah been down to summon arts and a few car shows around
07:12the places i went down a couple of years earlier without the blind motor and went back this year
07:17with the blind motor and it's going to be blowing down there behind us is quickie a very famous
07:30local car here in reklift now david the owner he's out in the pub so we've got the nespex thing we've
07:37got his son mate tell us about this rig this is a 1984 xe esv falcon so it's a 393 cleveland
07:47it's blown obviously tubbed nine inch it's been a summon arts a few times it's quite the infamous
07:53summon arts car a lot of videos from we're doing for your skids and everything um i don't think it
07:58can do skids oh i think it can mate
08:01coming up shane and ellen from valley grunt start work on the rusty damaged front guards of the hmas pacer
08:29here and forbes machinery house are your aussie owned one-stop shop for everything workshop
08:35machinery if you've got a job we've got the tools and machinery to make it happen we're one of the
08:41country's largest stockists and suppliers serving your machinery needs throughout australia to keep
08:47your business running with our huge warehouses in sydney melbourne brisbane perth and adelaide drop in and
08:54see what we can do for you if you can't get to one of our massive warehouses remember you can get
09:00everything online with nearly 90 years of experience our reputation stands alone offering you a complete
09:07service with innovative and high quality products our technically trained staff check your equipment
09:13before it comes to you not sure how to use your machinery no problem we've got you covered our staff
09:20for trade qualified and can provide you with the right advice when you purchase a machine from
09:25here and forms machinery house it's not just a sale it's a partnership
09:34today we're filming on the pacer and at the current moment we are at repairing the guards this guard's
09:52quite heavily damaged in the front lower today we'll just be slowly beaten and pulling the dents out
09:58and getting it to perfect so first of all we strip all the paint get it to bare metal get any filler or
10:06layers of paint off so we can actually see what has happened to the guard and then second of all we go
10:12out with a hammer and dolly slowly dollying it making it flat and making it perfect and then we go over it
10:19with a sander seeing if we can see any small ripples and a little bit of prep solder to make the
10:26piece of steel shiny so after we're done this guard is going to look like it came out of the factory
10:32or as close to as we can you can't buy much for these earlier mopars especially guards trying to find
10:41a new guard usually they're rusty or damaged and it's just usually most of the cases it's best to repair
10:49the panel the vg valiant and vf valiant have a different front guard to a dodge dart a dodge dart
10:56has a more flat and squared off ends whether the valiance have a rounded curl on the ends and are
11:03longer all australian mopar were made in-house in australia but they were based off the dodge dart platform
11:12and then they had the australian dashes and guards and panels the aussie ones had some nicer attributes
11:23to them i would rather the front end on a vg valiant than a ve or a dodge dart as a lot of people call
11:30alan's been doing really well he's now a second year apprentice and with these panels as you can
11:45possibly imagine they're not the greatest panels in the world these cars now are 55 years old
11:52so a 55 year old panel normally has had one or two paint jobs over its lifetime this is a genuine
12:01pacer we're going to try and keep as many genuine panels on it as humanly possible but again at the
12:06same time we we've got to keep it economically viable because if you repair panels that are really
12:12really bad it's not cost effective with a panel like this so what we're going to do is we're going to
12:21we're going to push on this line so nine times out of ten this dent that's here originates from this
12:29spot here or from here so we're going to push on this line and and push it out a little bit and see
12:35if most of this dint will disappear and then we'll lightly beat the area so if you can and then somebody's
12:45pulled it all the way out which has created these little sort of puckers so what we're going to do
12:50is we're going to support it on the wheel arch and just push down on this part of the panel just with my palm first
13:03just like that and then we're going to flip it over and have a look at it
13:09so that's pulled a small amount of that dint out just a small amount not much
13:13so it's definitely on that line that needs to be played with because you can see it
13:26we're now up to sound deadening and painting the guard
13:55i've repaired all the framework of the guard and i've rust coated the guard i've taped all the guard
14:01up got it all ready for sound deadening all i've got to do is sand it and untape it
14:07so the rust coating prevents any more rust coming out and neutralizes all the rest of the rust that could
14:15also be there so we're putting sound deadening over the top of the rust coating to make the guard look
14:24nicer on the back behind while you're going down the road
14:36next up we have a special visitor taking us behind the scenes at dynamotive
14:44james's equipment is a distributor for our global leading brands such as ben pack
14:55sturtle coney
14:56so we spy hoist lifting equipment specialised testing equipment throughout australia in all
15:03segments whether it's a car dealership right the way through to a car enthusiast or a truck
15:08dealership right away through the truck enthusiast the difference we see with the bendback hoist
15:13is not just with the ergonomical technology that we use when we're operating the hoist and lifting
15:18the hoist it's all about safety and longevity we can put anyone under the hoist and we know
15:23they're safe with the pain pack hoist there's no complicated buttons to use when we want the hoist
15:28to go up we press the button in return then when we want to lower the hoist down it's just a matter of
15:32lifting the handle and that releases the safety locks we just press the button and it steadily
15:37brings that car down in our bendback range we have the two post hoist which very very popular but we
15:45do the four post hoist and that's anything from a car to a truck in the four post range so the
15:50versatility for whatever you're using in any type of application in a workshop we've got the hoist there
15:56to accommodate that
16:07that is a really really good question i do a lot but in order for
16:36me to do a lot in running a shop like this i need an awesome team of people because you've been
16:41coming here since you were one why don't you go out and ask all the boys what they do how about
16:46i hand off the hosting duties to you for today and you can go and interview everyone okay perfect
16:52so rich what do you do here uh i run security dynamotive bouncer first and foremost and i'm
17:10also the workshop manager i wouldn't say about the bouncer i think i'm the best okay and what do you do
17:16in the cars so i do a bit of everything in the workshop i do some dyno tuning i do a lot of
17:21mechanical work but i have a strong passion for wiring and electronics so i try and spend most of
17:26my time doing that i saw you helping out with the wiring yep helping out's interesting but sure we'll
17:31go with that i think that's what most of the boys think i do here and one more thing what is it with
17:37all of these basketball shoes well prior to this is going back a long time so i've been at dynamotive now
17:43for nearly 16 years prior to that i was a professional basketball player i was uh yeah yeah i was uh
17:50heading over to the states and i was meant to make it big and just wasn't meant to be missed my flight
17:55and never actually could play basketball so that was probably the biggest ah so see i am the best
18:00basketball player you certainly are no it was a uh it was a covert thing and i guess it just became an
18:06obsession oh hi poppa what's doing with that big um shabby the big block yeah the big block what do
18:25you what do you reckon i'm doing are you doing the lift how did you know that because you got that thing
18:31oh yeah remember the last time you did this yeah you set the valve clearance oh yeah i did that thing
18:38yeah that thing when you're about four yeah so when are you gonna finish my big block ford our big block
18:45ford no mine well yeah it will be yours one day but right now it's kind of mine kind of well it's kind
18:52of ours ours ours all of ours yeah one day okay okay well i'm 16 yeah you're gonna get your learners in
19:00it yeah there we go wait what
19:23so rob why do you have these 3d printers and what do you use them for oh because we like to make
19:30production parts for some of the cars we work on and also some prototype fixtures and whatnot so
19:37just a good cheap way to prove our drawings before we go and spend big dollars on production parts
19:42what else do you use them for mainly i guess low volume production custom parts a lot of things that
19:49help our manufacturers out the back make their job easier lots of fixtures and jigs and things like
19:55that so what are some of your other jobs that you do here in the workshop i do a bit of everything make
20:00the jigs make the prototypes draw all the brackets do all the 3d drawings the scanning so we've all got
20:10uni chip on our shirts what does that mean well uni chip allows us to tune any vehicle on the market
20:17motorbikes cars basically anything fuel injected the uni chip gives the tuner that's us guys the
20:25capability to tune it and make it run the best it can and what cars have you done oh well we've done
20:31your dad's amg mercedes c63 we've tuned that up with the uni chip we've done we do plenty of ford raptors
20:39patrols basically anything petrol diesel and what do you call this place well this is our fabrication side
20:46of the business out the back we've got jigs for all the popular exhaust and that that we do and that's
20:53basically where we hand make all our exhaust systems in-house for things like patrol and stinger and
20:59hyundai and raptor and all the popular cars we um build them all in-house out the back right here in
21:05bayswater
21:14coming up dave from styling automotive in brisbane updates us on the progress of his many builds in the workshop
21:21os wheels is a 164 scale die cast manufacturing business so we produce manufacture and distribute
21:35all around australia 164 scale die cast cars we started out with two different body styles a panel
21:40van and a hq four-door and now in series two we have a total of 24 different bodies including xaxb falcons
21:47xwxy falcons into a hxle in the holdens and some monaros thrown in there as well
22:05we have the 3100 chevy truck the boys have finished off fabricating connecting pieces to bring the running
22:12boards in and flush them into the guards so that's all looking pretty neat and tidy now we're just
22:17have to square up the center of the wheel arches with the new rims that we've bought however the
22:22cabs on the chassis which we purchased from tci from the united states so it has all the brake
22:27system put in and we've taken the airbags out of it just for working purposes but it's all been
22:31installed we're just working in the tray now we're going to do the tubbing of the rear wheel arches
22:36sorting the rear floor out and making a few little shifty moves in there to finalize a few bits
22:42engines in it's been plumbed we've now got a bit of engine bay fabricating work to complete
22:47before we strip it all apart and it heads up into the paint shop so it has a brand new ls3 motor
22:53installed into this vehicle the 6l90 gearbox behind it obviously it runs a nine inch diff in the rear
22:59it's been modified and then we'll be tweaking this ls3 as we move on through the build once we've
23:05finalized the body work and finalize all the major fitting and mechanical parts to the job we'll be
23:11splitting the car apart and the chassis will then be split apart again and all the component tree
23:16the chassis itself and all the control arms and everything that comes to building these cars will
23:21be all sent away powder coated or we'll paint them whichever color we're working on for the customers
23:26needs we've been backwards and forwards with some color combinations on this car originally customer
23:34wanted to be black with all the chrome we just felt that it was always a black chevy truck around and
23:40we kind of wanted to bring it a little bit more into the you know 2025 era so we've worked on a
23:47really nice metallic green that we're working with so yeah we'll be excited to show you that
24:01we have a bmw 635m in the workshop as well which i repainted right through the covert block so it was
24:08just a nice neat little tidy up customers kept it from ever since then it had a small little bingle in
24:13it so we've just fixed that up for him and then given a bit of a cut and polish tidy up car presenting
24:18really nicely we also have another 635 with a csi in which the customer had an unfortunate incident
24:25had some rear end damage so we fixed that for him under insurance i mean then same old story once
24:31you're in for a bit of a smash like that and then there's a few extra panels around the car we'll tidy it up
24:35so it's now in for a full respray back to its factory color as well old bob who owns the vehicle
24:41he's 83 years old he's an absolute legend so he wanted us just to tidy the vehicle up he's had it
24:46for a long time and he always liked it to be kept his best so we're going to do that one for bob
24:51so this vehicle is a 190 esl mercedes-benz it's a carbureted little motor and then what we're
25:04trying to do is change it to an efi we purchased an efi unit which we're modifying and putting onto
25:10the vehicle which is now enabled to tune the car just off your phone and it's not for so much
25:15performance but for more reliability it's the ability that you can start this car up today
25:21and drive it and put it back in the shed and then leave it for four months and then come back to it
25:25and kick it in the guts and start again and you won't have an issue with it so these are for the
25:30customers that may not drive these vehicles all that often but really do enjoy the drive but sometimes
25:36not maintaining them or keeping the regular drive to them they tend to be a bit sluggish and not
25:41perform as well as they should so we've adapted this little efi unit to remove that problem and
25:47it's easily transferable back if the customer chooses to resell the vehicle later on in life
25:52and wants to put it back to its factory setting 190 esl's got a favorite place for everybody really
25:57if you know the cars you love them they're just another cool little car to play around with
26:11next we head back to motorfest and check out some awesome rides with crisscross
26:26so pacemaker is traditionally known as pacemaker headers and as a company we are an exhaust
26:32manufacturer it has its origins in the 1970s as a company where we're bordering on the 50-year
26:37category now and we've got our origins in our product range that we still make today
26:41our exhaust systems are all made from 409 grade stainless steel it's a 1.5 mil wall thick all
26:48fabricated and built here in australia pacemaker have developed advanced technologies in our mufflers
26:54and our cats we have a very special high flow cat setup and pacemaker also use long strand fiberglass
26:59in our mufflers and double-skinned walls as well there's a gain in both performance and economy economy
27:05is picked up because the engine is not having to work as hard as what it once was before to
27:09remove the exhaust gases from the engine but obviously by doing so that frees up the engine
27:13and allows the performance to improve each vehicle is different but you know across the border set of
27:17headers can generally pick you up you know around a 10 percent gain and it can vary depending on what
27:21you do from there all reputable exhaust shops and the mechanical workshops and performance shops stock
27:27pacemaker products and you can get yours there this is day three of the peninsula motor fest absolutely
27:46awesome weekend so far now this is the prime event of the whole weekend we're here at pelican park in
27:53reklift we've had about 1500 cars already rock up there's still a lot of people a lot of cars and
27:59a lot of things to look at so let's go for a walk let's go check out the action
28:23so this weekend we're up at our peninsula motor fest up at red cliff top of rizzi a beautiful day
28:33lots of cars and pretty good vibes me and the guys brought out a heap of cars we brought five cars
28:37with us all previously on the tv show we've got the sema truck we've got the vanguard project which
28:43is current we've got the falcon sedan delivery grand's hot rod and the t bucket we did for josh
28:49mcguire so quite a few cars bit of selection variety everyone's really interested in seeing
28:54the cars and they're enjoying what we've got out there
29:00this event's going to be huge i think today we're going to hopefully get about 1500 cars through the
29:04gate which is really awesome it's a beautiful day i guess it's good to see everyone putting a bit of
29:09effort in we've got a few guys that came up to the show yesterday we've got more coming up today just
29:14to have a look and then the guys that really help out scotty jace and the old man i brought him out of
29:19retirement you know so i got him sweating but once the setup's done it's all pretty cruisy and they
29:23just love talking and mingling to people so it's uh it's going to be really good for us the whole
29:28show is just for a charity too so all the people that are involved in the trade and all the fundraising
29:33it all goes for a very good charity which is awesome a rash who puts it on does a great effort
29:38does lots and lots of work coming up to the show and even last night he was setting up fences at midnight
29:43so it's a really good environment everyone gets around and has a good day
29:49it's a great hobby of sport we've got a lot of people with you know little ones i sit them in
29:53the car all the time get photos and we give them giveaways and just trying to encourage people it's
29:58just a good fun sport for all ages so we got people from elderly people that looked up the 34 forward
30:03and asked all the techie questions right through to the little ones that go oh that car's cool can't
30:08have a sit in it we've got the toys here today and the trade stand in behind and this is an awesome
30:13event raising lots of money for charity we've got five cars in total we're going all out i know the
30:17organizer personally and he's a great guy he really works hard for charity and he's been giving for some
30:22years now so i told him this year we'd go all out and put on a killer stand so with the sema truck i
30:27guess it was sort of the first season of the tv show it's been around for a long time now it's still a
30:32crowd favorite everyone likes anything that sits on the ground with big supercharged engine up the front so
30:37yeah we sort of get it out and about where we can the weather's awesome today so might as well bring
30:42out all the toys so the old black and green beast is a 34 three window coupe that's been on the road
30:4829 years and will be 30 years in november the paint on the bottom is black and that's the original color
30:54the roof the boys sprayed about four or five years ago went to the sema show and i got a phone call
30:58saying we're gonna change your car while you're away dad i came back and it was green on top so it's on
31:03its second motor second transmission the diff's original it's got the second set of wheels and
31:08tires the trim inside the car is looking a bit aged and tatted because it's original yeah i've just
31:13driven the pants off it it's been a really good reliable car it's fun to get up it'll pop the front
31:18wheel and it's yeah just a good street car so with the sedan delivery falcon it's an xk very old
31:25came from early beach originally we left the patina on it that it has currently and we just tricked out
31:30the insides the engine bay the rear tray section heaps of suspension work was done overall the
31:37outside looks like a ruddy old falcon panel van but on the inside pretty damn new so the teabuck is
31:44a funny story we met up with josh mcguire who at the time was playing for the brisbane broncos
31:48he was an all australian nrl player one of the superstars of the game and he wanted to build himself
31:53a toy had a stint in the uk then his wife said him well josh this car's pretty selfish we've got
31:59a family and we can only fit two people in it so now we're doing a tough mustang for him with two
32:05seats in the front and three in the back yeah we brought the trade stand down brought a few display
32:17cars out from you know finished to to not finished people like to see everything in between a couple
32:22of superchargers brought out an engine yeah basically trying to promote it i'm normally in the office so
32:27yeah it's nice to get out and about it's awesome everyone's out and about and we've been getting a
32:31lot of foot traffic through people just you know asking the general questions and yeah it's it's
32:35been awesome such a great turnout and honestly it's really tight knit up here i find and the cars like
32:40the build it's off tap up here i mean i think the definition of a street car up here on the north
32:44side is a bit different to what we've got on the south side so it's pretty leery
32:57it's got a four thirty cube ls 871 blower big and ugly hat it's all efi injected makes about 1470 at
33:15the hubs power glide sheet metal nine inch full floater we built this show actually back on season
33:20three it's a elite car it's top summoner it's twice top engine bay top coupe top tutor so they're
33:26trying to it's still pretty loud but it runs actually a full exhaust man it's got four mufflers in it i
33:31just don't like the the teeny so it needs to have like strength and full volume behind it not the tinny
33:36not feeling the pipe properly noise nevaeh is from nam racing's down today with her junior and the junior
33:43bike as well and i remember helping set up her first car the c-class so it's good to see her and
33:49ricky again yeah she's leading the point scoring in the junior dragster championship and she's also
33:53running her bike as well my name's nevaeh and i race the junior dragster and junior bike i'm leading
33:59the junior dragster championship and juniors all over for the car i'm leading them in the bike
34:05i'm not quite there yet because i've only just started on it i've been doing it since i was eight
34:10so about seven six years we went out to willow bank raceway one day to watch one of lukey's best
34:18mates to race and then we saw the junior dragsters and said dad they look pretty sick can i hop into
34:25them and then i got surprised for my birthday with the junior drag stuff it's really good to get
34:30out there and get people to hop into junior dragsters and like little kids and stuff
34:49coming up it's time to head to evil garage as work begins on transforming the oz wheels 164 diecast hq
34:57smoke bomber model into a real car and you can purchase your very own smoke bomber from oz wheels
35:09hi i'm colin if you're looking for tyres mechanical service or just general advice come on down to
35:14mooney ponds tires we offer a full range of servicing from tyres to brakes to all sorts of general mechanical
35:20repairs every vehicle will get an inspection to make sure the vehicle is safe in terms of tyres we do a
35:25large range of tyres from the smallest law mower tyre right the way up to the largest earthmover tyre
35:31we do wheel limits we do batteries anytime you need any tyres just come and see us
35:47we're up at marucci door at wilkie's pro paints and we are kicking off d-day for the smoke bomber
35:57one-to-one build so the original concept we were sitting down and trying to think of how we could
36:01tie into some of the things that we love the most about australiana culture now i'm a very big vet
36:07supporter so we wanted to tie in something military so we started going back and forward with a few
36:11different ideas and we love the idea of giving some of our cars backstories so with this one tiny
36:16and myself came up with the idea two brothers get a car from a backyard shed all rusted out pull it out
36:23and turn it into a burnout champion so we've done that with the model and today we're here with the
36:29one-to-one today we're up at wilkie's pro paints here in maroochidor and we're bringing up the oz wheel
36:34smoke bomber so this is day one of building and we're aiming to get us done in 12 weeks currently we've
36:39got our hz shell we couldn't find a decent qe shell that we're looking for in our time frame so we
36:44found a nice rust free body of a hz shell so in doing that we need to change the plenum the whole
36:49front kit build in the tail lights at the rear where the bumper turns a new boot lid multiple dash
36:55altercations but we're going to do something custom there yeah we're going to start ripping this front
36:58end out today and convert it to a hq and then we'll start tubbing it custom dash custom material firewall
37:05dummy up all the motor etc so the first step here we will pull all the hz panels off the front we'll
37:11pull the standard hz front end out we've got a new front end that we're going to bolt in immediately to
37:17troll fit because we have to troll fit the hq front guards we need the front end in the car to be able
37:24to mount the radiator support to be able to put the nose panel on the front guards that will be needed
37:29to replace the cowl panel which this one's a weld on item so we need to cut that off and trial fit
37:36all the hq stuff to then weld the hq wiper cowl panel on so that potentially will be what we're
37:42focusing on on day one swapping the panels from a hz to a hq is a basic-ish conversion the back of the
37:50car is probably the trickiest one because hz have the lights on the quarter panels hq have them in the
37:56bumper bar so we have to make some cheap metal to weld up the quarter panels to then put the lights
38:02in the bumper so not a tricky conversion no
38:1612 weeks is absolutely insane and when luke pitched the idea i said are you sure we can do this but of
38:22course i trust him implicitly and uh you know he's so organized and structured with what he does
38:27for me personally to see this car step to that sort of quality in the time frame is going to be
38:32something really really special this really is a bucket list thing for me this is something i've
38:36really wanted to do my entire life so oswheels bringing this to life with the help of evil garage
38:41and all the boys it's just absolutely amazing so when i designed the car originally and to see it in
38:46the model car the feeling was unbelievable because it's something that i pretty much created in my head
38:50so now to see that little tiny toy car now transformed into a real life version of that
38:57i'm wrapped can't can't wait should be a great project because luke's quality of cars he builds
39:02is show quality i trust luke luke's built many amazing cars to date if he says we can do it in 12
39:07weeks we can do it in 12 weeks
39:08so with this car i just want to make like a multiple use promo car for say so we can put it
39:23on display we can take it and do a big skid with the burnout comp we can take down the track and have
39:27fun in it and then we can sort of tick all the driving events from the seals up we're going to make
39:32it to a show level obviously that'll entail obviously nice gapping straight panels billet and
39:37custom everywhere where possible if it's going to a nice stone guard nice flat fall original sort of
39:42style under the car just because it's going to get peppered in tires we've fitted the hq panels hq
39:48nose panel make sure that's all right the cowl panel's been fitted up everything's been gapped up
39:54we've pulled all the hq panels back off and now we're getting into welding the hq cowl panel on to make
40:00all that fit nice while the boys were finishing off at the front end darren and i started at the
40:12rear templating up to weld up the provision for the hz tail lights to essentially build in a quarter
40:18panel to make it look like a hq quarter panel so we've lined up the hq boot lid lined up the hq rear
40:24bumper bar and basically made some cardboard templates transferred onto steel and now we've
40:30slowly welding them in to make a hq quarter panel essentially we've got to really take care to
40:36make sure that the gaps on the piece that we're adding on are the same gap as the rest of the boot
40:43lid so yes it does come down we're talking halves of millimeters or even smaller than that to make sure
40:49that everything looks like it was meant to be there to do the rear we obviously put the hq boot on took
40:55the hz boot off again they have different body lines in the middle the hq is a rounded boot the hz
41:01have two sharp lines and we're doing that so we get the boot on make it square to the quarters and then
41:07as we run down then we know and we can run a nice straight line from the bottom of the boot lid to the
41:11top of the bar and that'll be our true line and then make the old tail lights which are now going to
41:16be quarter panel filled in to be square the second hand hq boot lid we got really lined up nice with the
41:22hz quarter panels so we've gapped that up we've got really nice gaps and then the extensions that
41:28we're making are just flowing on from those gaps
41:42today was going to get a template going for the firewall it'll probably be larger because obviously
41:47as we swage it'll shrink and stretch the metal so we can't do it exactly because as we put lines
41:51and grooves in it the metal will grow and then we'll be out anyway so we'll make it a bit bigger
41:55all around we'll put it in place we'll start making our points we'll swage it then we'll get our swage
42:01line into where we want it to be desired and then we'll trim the outers to suit some of it has been
42:06chopped out to give us clearance at the back of the fuel rails uh the metering block fuel regulator etc
42:13and then a portion of it we've cut out just to make it look the same as the other side
42:19and the factory provision where the heater box is we want to tidy that up and get rid of that because
42:24there'll be no heater box going back in this so two-thirds of the firewall is gone and it'll have to
42:29be replaced yeah the next step will be to cut out a piece of sheet metal for the firewall we'll make
42:35it a little bit bigger so we've got some wiggle room with it and we're going to mark out some lines
42:41on it matching the other side and we'll put some bead lines and swage lines to make a new firewall so
42:47hopefully we'll get that underway today and also get the taillight areas finished welded up myself
42:54plus the boys here at wilkie's pro paints we're pretty excited about getting into it and always
42:58like a challenge of a 12-week build we've done a few before and we've got them across the line so
43:03it's all about having a good team really so this car we are planning to unveil at motorx we're going to
43:10have it on display as show first of course then after that we're going to take it to some events and do
43:15some real world skids luke also was talking about we're going to do some drag racing some roll racing
43:20some quarter miles maybe potentially as well so lots of stuff in there the car is being dialed in
43:25and is being set up to do absolutely everything so not just a show car but also a go car
43:46next week on rides down under workshop wars we head to chrysler's on the murray race day as alan
43:52from valley grunt hits the track mark and i take the hg panel van for a spin through the dandenong
43:59ranges luke mitchell's evil garage begins work on the oz wheels smoke bomber tubs all that and more
