00:00So I got to catch up with Jen over the weekend, and she's like,
00:04I like that show a little bit.
00:05She goes, I miss Wiggy.
00:06He wasn't the fastest tight end, but he always caught everything.
00:09So she's like, she goes, I bet you guys had fun in the locker room.
00:13We had a good time.
00:14I know we did have a good time.
00:16And she's like, Courtney's so cute.
00:18She's like, the bald guy bugs me.
00:20But other than that, no, all that was made up.
00:24Did she say anything about the hosts of the show?
00:25She thought that we were all the hosts.
00:28No, she thought you guys were all.
00:30That was all made up, by the way.
00:31You've reached Bigfoot status.
00:33We saw, like, grainy, blurry pictures of you at the airport on Friday on social media.
00:37So how was the weekend away?
00:40Oh, good.
00:40Good.
00:41I got to go back and see, saw Carter in Nashville and hung out there,
00:46saw some of our friends and his buddies that we're close with, and so it was good.
00:54Bella's got some time off, too, although I saw a bunch of them showed up here anyway
00:58over the weekend.
00:58Is that accurate?
00:59Well, we don't keep tabs on them, but, I mean, there was treatment and everything else,
01:03and there was guys that had to be here for different things.
01:06So we'll get back to work today, try to have a little bonus day, get them moving,
01:11and get out on the practice field.
01:13Mike, in the game, Drake had a couple opportunities where he was able to extend the play with his
01:18legs and throw the ball downfield.
01:19How difficult is that from a defensive standpoint when you have a quarterback that can do those
01:25type of things?
01:26Well, it's just a lot to defend and how many guys you want to allocate towards that and
01:30to the scrambles or to the spy or, you know, Fields got us early.
01:35You know, we got off of our assignment and we got a little wide off the hash and those
01:39guys that are spying or whatever helping inside, if they, you know, stray off the hash,
01:44especially quarterbacks with some speed, can circle you up and extend the play.
01:49But then when you can throw it downfield and remain a passer, very difficult.
01:54You know, guys come out of coverage and, you know, you, again, can extend the, you know,
01:59all the way to the line of scrimmage and be able to throw.
02:02That puts a lot of pressure on the defense and, you know, we can use that as a weapon,
02:06hopefully.
02:08The MVP chants were loud for Drake during the game, but then after when you guys were
02:11talking to Thursday Night Football, they continued with the fan base.
02:14The best part about Drake, besides his play, he seems confident but not cocky.
02:18Is that just the type of guy he is?
02:20I think so.
02:21I think that's about his upbringing and understands how this league is, you know, it's so, uh,
02:27it's just finicky.
02:29You know what I mean?
02:29You have to continue to do it each and every day.
02:32And it's certainly on game day, the most important.
02:35So, uh, no naps.
02:38That's what we're going to start talking about.
02:39No, no naps.
02:40We don't want to take any naps and have any days off.
02:44Uh, that post-game interview I thought was really great with you two side-by-side.
02:47We saw a side that we hadn't seen.
02:49How much of a role did what you saw out of Drake May in his rookie year lead you to return
02:56as the head coach?
02:57Well, again, I touched on that.
02:59Uh, there was quite a bit, you know, being, being able to watch the tape and, um, you know,
03:05preparing for, for the different interviews that you take, you kind of try to get a feel
03:09for the team and what that looks like.
03:11And certainly the quarterback position is such an important, uh, position in our league
03:16and really any, any league that plays football.
03:20So, I think it had, uh, you know, a lot to do and how he reacted and, but again, it's
03:26a difficult season and I think how he handled things or his, his ability certainly stood out.
03:33What was the reporting accurate that the, the jets wanted you so bad?
03:37They, they called you last minute and they were willing to, willing to do anything from
03:40give you a private jet, whatever, whatever you wanted.
03:43Was that?
03:43Oh, was that?
03:47I mean, damn, we, we, we should have, we should have known that before today.
03:52I'm sure he gives that a lot of, a lot of things in.
03:57No, I think, uh, I'm not sure.
04:00Um, you know, again, you go through the interview process.
04:03Um, yeah, there's a lot of conversations that are had and then ultimately you try to make
04:07a decision and this is the decision that I made and extremely happy about being here.
04:12So are we, so are, so are the fans.
04:15Mike, you, you, you say no napping and now I'm just sitting at home and I'm watching.
04:19You love that.
04:19You look like a guy that loves a nap.
04:21I don't really nap because then it messes with my sleep at night.
04:23So then I'm like up all night.
04:26But you say no napping, but I'm watching the game at home and I'm saying on my TV at points
04:31in time, it looks like you guys are sleepwalking or like, and there was a point in time
04:36where I see you telling him to pick it up.
04:37Did you feel at times from in that game that maybe you took your foot off the gas a little
04:43bit or, well, I mean, we missed a kick before half, uh, you know, went three and out to start
04:48the second half.
04:49So, um, again, this is not always just going to be a 80 yard drive or it's not always going
04:56to be a three and out on defense.
04:58This is still professional football.
05:01Um, and yeah, I don't think we're sleepwalking.
05:03I just think that there's a play here or play there or one guy or a mistake.
05:07And, you know, we just have to try to clean those things up and continue to improve.
05:12That that's the most important thing.
05:13We've talked with you about it before.
05:15It, it, it, maybe it doesn't bother you.
05:18I don't know, but this team ends up defense wise, giving up points on that first drive
05:22more so than, than not.
05:24What, what is it about that when you, when you look at it?
05:28Cause well, I just think you look at it in totality and there's some things that they did.
05:31And, you know, again, we haven't been in a, in a situation where there was this probably
05:36as much quarterback run or designed quarterback run or read option.
05:40And those are things that, that are hard to create and practice against.
05:45And, you know, while we practiced against it, you know, it's one thing when you get some
05:50moving parts out there and, uh, um, you know, and the quarterback's able to extend some
05:56play.
05:56So, uh, we were able to account for that and then they kind of went away from it a little
06:00bit and, you know, we settled down.
06:02So, I mean, I think in, in totality, I think we played pretty good defense.
06:06We have to continue to, to play better.
06:08I certainly don't want to, um, I like the way that we respond.
06:13So, you know, we've had, you know, drives, you know, the one direct, the one game we joked
06:18about, we stopped them on a first drive and then we weren't very good the rest of the
06:21game or whatever that was.
06:22I'd rather have it give up seven and then nothing for the rest of the game.
06:27Um, but it is, you know, it's a, it's an entire body of work and, and how you can remain
06:32consistent throughout the game and finish and get off the field on third down.
06:36And, you know, hopefully we could start to, we have to create some turnovers.
06:39You know, that's, uh, we've talked about how tough that is, but we had three, three and
06:43outs in the second quarter, which, you know, is real positive.
06:47You guys were banged up going into Tampa Bay, coming out of Tampa Bay.
06:50Then you lose Milton, um, against the Jets.
06:52You talk about treatment this weekend.
06:54Are we, are we expected to see some guys?
06:56I know Milton Williams will be out three to four weeks.
06:58The reports are, but the guys that weren't there for Tampa Bay or the Jets after this
07:0210 day stretch, do you expect?
07:04Hopefully.
07:04Yeah.
07:04Hopefully I expect them to see him at practice today.
07:06So, uh, that would, uh, once they get through that and then we'll move on to Wednesday and
07:11see where they are and how they progress through the week.
07:13But yes, I think they'll be out there today.
07:15Okay.
07:16Did you watch any football over the weekend?
07:17Did you see the, uh, the bills, I mean, the bills, the chiefs, the Broncos game last
07:21night.
07:21Is there any, is there any teams that you watch specifically, or do you kind of wait
07:25to actually see the film?
07:26Don't watch, waste your time watching on TV.
07:28No, I watched the Bengals and the, uh, Steelers and Steelers.
07:33Yeah.
07:33I mean, we try to, we went back and forth between, you know, the old four screen, you know, the
07:39old four square and, and the single one.
07:42And it's hard.
07:43You know what I mean?
07:43There's a, it's a very, everybody yells and you don't know which screen you're watching
07:47at, which one you're yelling at.
07:48So I have six, I have six screen.
07:50Well, I'm not quite there yet.
07:53I'm not, I'm not quite there yet.
07:55So, but we watched, you know, watch the Steelers and the Bengals.
07:58Um, and then I saw, saw the, um, the Broncos, uh, and the Chiefs a little bit, then a little
08:05bit of the last night's game, but.
08:07Would you agree it's pretty wide open in the AFC compared to years past?
08:10Uh, I don't know who said that or agree with anything.
08:13I, um, I, I've never really looked at it like that.
08:17I, I haven't.
08:18I've kind of just always tried to be in the weeds and, and focus on the next week and,
08:22and not look too far ahead about, oh, this team or that team.
08:27And I just, I have it.
08:29And I think that that's probably something that's interesting to fans or people or media.
08:37I just, things happen too quickly in this league and haven't really looked at it like that.
08:43Mike, you look at your like coaching career and the success that you had at Tennessee.
08:49And now the success that you're having here through the first 11 games, what have you kind
08:53of learned in your coaching career that maybe you're doing a little bit different here?
08:58Um, because you look at this team and we, all the players that we talked to, everybody
09:03talks about your authenticity.
09:05Is there something that like you, maybe you learned and you said, all right, I'm going
09:08to do different this go around versus last go around?
09:11I mean, I just try to enjoy it and try to enjoy what we do and where we do it and who
09:15we get to do it with, um, you know, I've had players that have been released before and
09:21you get them and they know the, that, what that feels like to have been cut and they don't
09:27want to feel that again.
09:28And so they do everything they possibly can to, to not let that happen.
09:33So maybe they don't take things for granted and, you know, certainly being let go or fired
09:38or cut, whatever you want to call it, you know, you don't want to let that ever have
09:43to happen again and try to take advantage of the opportunity that we have.
09:46You look like you've been enjoying Travion Henderson.
09:49What's changed with him that has made him back to back weeks just show out?
09:54Um, well, again, I mean, we averaged, we didn't average four yards of carry, so it wasn't
09:58like we ran for 250 yards.
10:00I think he was, had some really good runs.
10:03I think that we can block better.
10:04I think that he, uh, found the end zone, which was really, really important.
10:09And, uh, one time we, we helped him in there with a pile push.
10:12Uh, he made a good cut to make the first guy miss.
10:15And then, uh, you know, we had a heck of a pile push.
10:19And I think the other, you know, some of his better runs are, are when he can knife inside.
10:24I think he finished strong on a safety, um, helped us out in the two minute, was able to
10:29catch the ball, get vertical.
10:30Um, you know, I think just from a, probably, uh, a confidence and understanding of where
10:36he's at and, you know, being able to get in there and know who to block, which isn't an
10:41issue, but being able to understand that the players are a little bigger and faster and
10:45get into the line of scrimmage to, to block them.
10:48Um, so I think he's continued to develop and continue to, um, you know, do, do a lot of
10:53really good things to help us and excited that he's having success.
10:56Will Campbell's a guy that you would generally only talk about if things weren't going right.
11:01He's been relatively, you don't hear his name on broadcast outside of praise.
11:05What have you seen from him 11 games in as the, you know, your fourth pick in the draft
11:09as your left tackle?
11:10I think he's, uh, been, you know, consistent each and every day.
11:13I think he works hard.
11:14I think he, um, makes adjustments quickly, you know, to, to the players or the skillset or,
11:21you know, whatever he's seeing, I think he's able to adjust quickly, uh, during games and
11:27understand, you know, what it is somebody maybe tried to do and come back and combat that
11:32for a young player.
11:36Um, are you going to go with the stash or what they, I heard that Gillette gave out those
11:40mustaches on, uh, on Thursday.
11:42You look good by the way.
11:44Yeah.
11:44It's not bad.
11:45It's coming in.
11:46Pat Patriot.
11:47I heard rocked one.
11:47Yeah.
11:48And also less than two weeks.
11:50I could never do it, brother.
11:51Love the shirt.
11:52I was going to, I don't know if, I don't know how busy you are today, but could I get an
11:55oil change?
11:55Wiggy wanted $5 on, on pump five.
12:00Remember when you were in high school and you'd get like $3 of gas?
12:03Yeah.
12:03Well, that was a long time ago.
12:04Well, I mean, we took the train and the bus.
12:06So when we had a car, we tried to fit.
12:08We had a cop.
12:09But I mean, I remember the days when you'd be like $2 on number three.
12:13Yeah.
12:13Like it'd be gas or Kodiak, which was going to be.
12:17And always the cheapest kind.
12:19That's it.
12:20Hawking.
12:20I just wanted to ask you, we've covered the schedule thing and those who comment on the
12:26ease of schedule a couple times with you.
12:29But is it weird?
12:30Like this team, there's been a turnaround here.
12:32This team is eight and two.
12:34And yet you still hear like somebody like nine and two.
12:37Wow.
12:37Big fan here.
12:39You still hear somebody like Cam Newton on Friday say that it's fools.
12:44This team is fools gold.
12:46Is that weird to you?
12:48No, nothing's weird to me.
12:50No, because people could come on a radio or, you know what I mean?
12:54It's just like they could, oh, whatever.
12:56It's just things that get their attention or we are okay with that.
13:01We, I promise you, we were okay with anything that anybody says.
13:05We are going to come to work.
13:06We're going to focus on us.
13:08We're going to try to improve.
13:09And we're going to focus on the Bengals and going on a road and trying to get our 10th win.
13:15And that's all we're going to focus on.
13:19You know, it just seems that whatever it is, people are going to have something to say, which is great.
13:24And they're entitled to their opinion.
13:26And what's most important is what we do here and how we work.
13:30I promise you, none of that is offensive at all.
13:36We just enjoy playing, you know, coaching these guys and watching them be excited and enjoy those moments like Thursday night.
13:44Bill used to use those as motivation for you guys when you were playing.
13:48Do you use any of that with your team now?
13:50No, no, I meant, are we going to put Cam Newton clips up there?
13:56No, we'd rather put our clips or the Bengals clips.
13:59That's, I don't think that's even remotely close to how we should try to inspire our players to play better.
14:08You talk about guys, you know, getting an opportunity after they might have been cut and doing some different things.
14:14You see a lot of guys making plays on this team, whether it's Chase On, the Tonga kid.
14:21There's, it seems like that.
14:23He's no kid.
14:23He's a big man.
14:26Age-wise, age-wise, he's probably in his 20s, so he's a kid to me.
14:30But you see a lot of these guys taking advantage of their opportunities or maybe some of their second go-around.
14:36How important is it that you make, you know, having a little bit of that experience of yourself, letting these guys know how important that is?
14:44Yep, it doesn't matter.
14:45We tell them it doesn't matter how they get here.
14:47The only thing that matters is what they do when they're here.
14:51That's all we can evaluate them by and, you know, we'll see what they can do.
14:56And then once they do something, then we try to give them a little bit more and continue to grow their role.
15:01I could play for you.
15:02Even coaching when I was playing.
15:04Yeah, you don't block that way.
15:05I don't block when I catch it, right?
15:08Fall forward.
15:09Who blocks nowadays?
15:10Do you mind Thursday Night Football?
15:13I know, like, we were talking earlier, John Gruden says the league ought to do away with it.
15:19Is it an issue for you?
15:21No, but I don't play.
15:23I mean, again, I was appreciative of coaches getting the players prepared.
15:28Players are the ones that have to go out there on a short week, and we understand what it is.
15:32And, you know, that's when the schedule comes out.
15:37They tell us the dates, and they tell us who, and that's what we get prepared for.
15:41Yeah.
15:42You know, we had us playing on, what was that, Friday?
15:45Yeah.
15:45And he said, listen, whether when we play, you just, you got to go out there and play.
15:51And, like, I feel like that's a good mindset to have because, obviously, you can't, I never played.
15:55I told him I never played on a Thursday night until how difficult it has to be.
15:59And he says, you can't even think about it.
16:01You just kind of got to go out there and play.
16:03I think probably once you get into the game, I think probably once 4 or 5 o'clock on Thursday rolls around, I think you're kind of ready to go.
16:11I'm sure they feel like crap on Monday and Tuesday.
16:13But we try to trick ourselves and say that when we walked in here on Monday, it was like a Thursday.
16:20And then, you know, the next day it was a Friday, and just try to mentally, I guess, I don't know what else to do other than say, you know, we're flying home on Wednesday night, and tomorrow morning is going to be Thursday.
16:31Look at it like that just because we're so trained for our, you know, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and then, you know, two days before, all that stuff.
16:41All right, well, we appreciate you taking the time.
16:43We'll let you go get it.
16:44I made your job a little bit more difficult.
16:46You've got to get win number 9 and 10 on Sunday.
16:49So if you can get both of those, we appreciate it.
16:52Thank you, Coach.
16:53That is Mike Rabel, the head coach of the New England Patriots.
