Japan on Monday (Nov 17) moved to tamp down an escalating row with China over Taiwan that has prompted Beijing to urge citizens to halt travel to its East Asian neighbour.

Masaaki Kanai from the Japanese foreign ministry arrived in the Chinese capital to meet Chinese foreign ministry officials, according to the Kyodo news agency.

The dispute erupted after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told lawmakers this month that a Chinese attack on Taiwan threatening Japan's survival could trigger a military response.
