00:00Summit, which was set up by social movements too severe as an alternative to COP30,
00:06the fight against eco-genocide came to a close today.
00:09Our correspondent Brian Mears has the details.
00:13After six days, with dozens of debates culminating in a democratic assembly
00:18in which a series of demands were collectively created and presented
00:22to the organizers of the UN Climate Summit, COP30,
00:26and top Brazilian government officials, the People's Climate Summit has come to a close.
00:32Organizers say that 30,000 people participated in the event.
00:38We demand an end to the production of fossil fuels,
00:42and we appeal to the governments to develop mechanisms to guarantee the non-proliferation of fossil fuels
00:50for an energy transition that is fair for the people
00:56and inclusive with sovereignty, protection, and reparations for damages to territories affected.
01:01Thousands of members of social movements like the MST,
01:05indigenous peoples, river dwellers, and Kilambola residents
01:09traveled from all over the world to Belang
01:11to participate in the People's Summit, many arriving by boat.
01:15The goal of the event was to provide a space
01:18where working-class urban and rural citizens from the global south
01:21could have their voices heard,
01:24as a counter to the COP30,
01:26which is dominated by government officials,
01:28fossil fuel industry lobbyists,
01:30and capitalist foundations from the global north.
01:33We have no doubt that the capital system,
01:38this production and consumption model,
01:40is the real cause of climate change.
01:43So our proposal with the People's Summit
01:45was to externalize our criticism of sectors like agribusiness,
01:49among others,
01:51while raising our voices to minimally insert ourselves into COP30,
01:57which is a summit that is basically negotiated
01:59by those who are destroying the environment.
02:01The People's Summit has come to a close,
02:04but COP30 will continue until Friday, November 21st.
