00:00Totti right watch this yeah no no sit sit down already just getting that very good yeah there
00:11we go and there we go bean sitting blimey isn't it wonderful that at least someone will do
00:18something that you ask when you ask it I didn't want to say anything yeah but you know I just
00:23hope you'd perhaps take some kind of sort of heed from what's going on there oh I thought they were
00:28being trained I didn't realize it was us actually someone's got your hat fuzz get out of it you come
00:34on bean doesn't do that we're back oh loving this scouring Britain sheds for classic cars a thing
00:44of beauty proper special quintessential Brits that's nice a Lee Francis American icons look at the amount
00:52of chrome on the front there and continental curios that is a Lancia Aprilia we're gonna buy them
01:00thank you so much sort them it's the sunroof no please I'm getting out now drive them and sell them
01:09for a tidy profit oh we're in the money this is shed and buried classic cars we're on our way to
01:22Bristol and we're going open mic what do you call a bloke with leaves on his head Russell and that's
01:30who we're going to go and see all right okay got you all right yeah now what's uh what's Russell's
01:36poison I'm not quite sure which poison is on the phone he didn't seem to have been poisoned yeah yeah
01:43I think he's got an eclectic mix I think that's what we normally call it yeah a bit of old and new
01:48four wheels and two he's got four wheels yeah I think he might have the odd two wheel yeah yeah cool and
01:55he probably might have something in between like a three wheel you never know that's true yeah they
02:00do exist it doesn't really matter whether it's British American Italian Scandinavian yeah whatever
02:07yeah as long as it's got some character about it that's what matters isn't it yeah well you get that
02:13kind of moment of excitement that's what really rose our boat is what's in here that we've never seen
02:20the four yeah and if it's affordable let's buy it exactly whether we leave Russell's with a Nissan Leaf
02:26for a Model T Ford with Leaf Springs who knows but Russell here we come tell me mate right there's a
02:38there's a minor there there's something over there yeah tell me I mean what's your poison British cars
02:44any cars British cars so Russell tell me about you mate so restoring stuff I'm a welder and then you
02:51collect the odd motor at the same time yeah yeah we'll have a mosey about a little rummage in there
02:56is everything for sale everything's for sale yeah everything's for sale even you yeah I've seen the
03:00size of your wallet yeah yeah so you know there won't be much yeah exactly I'll be buying the odd
03:07spanner yeah great hey Ross fantastic mate well we'll have a quick go out here yeah and then we'll be in
03:12next to the ubiquitous Morris minor he's got a rather rare a British saloon that I think is a
03:31standard 12 or 14 what what Austin no standard standard was a Midlands-based manufacturer who
03:40built cars and tractors before the brand name disappeared when they merged with triumph the
03:46standard 14 was a popular car of the early 50s though this one has seen better days you would lose
03:53your shirt on that wouldn't you you would have to restore it out of love not money you know where
03:58it's probably more likely to be destined for where banger racers oh no how do you fancy yeah going
04:06inside well you better throw the dog's ball go on you go and get it where is it down Shep come on you
04:13got to be of a certain age to remember that inside Russell is going for the Tardis of the Year award with
04:20a collision of commercial curios that is a van body on something else maybe American iron the interior is a
04:31a little bit some care-worn would you like to take a look sir stationary engines we got ourselves a
04:39little Lister D stationary engine yeah that's lovely on the trolley so that's that's great even better
04:44it's ready to sit in front of look at those country shows yes assorted bric-a-brac hold on Q9 line I'll tell
04:52you what mate yeah that would be an open shut case and another classic Brit now that looks really
05:05rather nice yeah doesn't it now come on then tell me Austin what it's a 10 hen released in 1932 the
05:14Austin 10 is a classic mid-range saloon aimed squarely at the middle-class market so this was like I suppose
05:22probably your sort of bankish manager or at least well-to-do merchant I was going to say going
05:29around in one of these yeah possibly yeah grocer yeah yeah yes or grocer maybe with two shops the
05:36interior looks pretty okay or actually the seat cushions have been re-upholstered by it's because
05:41there's been an awful lot of grossers bottoms on there well that's right oh my what's that now that
05:47is extraordinary now what is this then fuzzy it's not it's one of those yeah it's a standard 14 but
05:54hang on a sec but wait a minute what but it's done as America Russell look what just talk to me well
06:03what's this about standard 14 made to look military so it wasn't originally it wasn't military no but the
06:10the one outside you were looking at was former RAF okay and better condition so sort of took that theme
06:17across I see oh right okay I get it I actually think it looks pretty cool it does look cool you know
06:23what I mean looks like a kind of staff car do you know what I mean yeah yeah and it's got well you know
06:29it's it's aged but it has got a complete interior by the looks of things yep okay does it run at all it does start it's not the best it needs you know your expertise
06:40oh don't look at me mate well it needs his expertise oh let's just have a little look under here
06:44yeah have a quick look under there what's under there this is a flathead this is uh this is a side valve engine
06:50so it's so you're nice and slowly then yeah very slowly but it'll it'll get there when it is going
06:56it ain't slow oh okay it isn't it isn't slow so once you wind it up oh yeah it'll do 70 miles an hour quite
07:03comfortably will it yeah yeah it does look lovely though i like it's got a certain chance it's funky
07:08yeah i mean it's i mean where are you going to find another one outside yeah that's a good point
07:13well delivered yeah now look there's something behind here that i want to have a look at go on
07:18right okay now what the heck is that that is a 1954 nash roller tractor that's it that's a tipper
07:26does it is it a powered tipper no you just a manual tipper oh okay yeah uh motorcycle seat bsa
07:32stationary engine and a three speeds forward and reverse it's actually got a roller on it as well
07:37it's for rolling the garden oh look at that i've driven up the road i don't know yeah yeah yeah
07:42yeah it does 25 miles now 25 miles per hour it really rattles along i'll tell you it's becoming
07:47more and more attractive stopping it again is a yeah that is an issue yeah let's go hang on what's that
07:55that's a little uh chinese trials bike oh cool sweet little thing yeah one two five semi-automatic
08:02that's super cool that could be really good fun yeah yeah well look okay this is a good fun corner
08:08here all right should we go have a look over there then russell's second unit has got a lovely triumph
08:15saloon and uh-oh oh no no no look it's a dennis you like these look at that look it's got it's got the
08:26starting handle and everything come back now that is lovely okay i've got a hankering for i've got
08:33a hankering for a dennis do you know what i have to say that is exactly the same as the one that i got
08:38nailed is it really i paid 300 quid yeah for a dennis mower like that and i sold it for 70. did you yeah
08:49okay so look right we've got that um standard 14. military military spec one yeah we've got the one
08:57next door to which is an austin 14. the austin 10. 10. yeah i really like that i know yeah but you know
09:03i just do like austin's there's that motorbike oh yes of course yeah okay and there's also the tipper
09:09the little tipper now that that is that's a lot in quite a compact area come on let's go do a deal
09:17all right mind the step yeah all right
09:24i don't know where to start rush where should we start loads of stuff you know in a very small
09:29space as well that's great compact yeah compact but lovely yeah okay mate so go on then what right
09:35i'm going to start off by asking about the austin 10 there yeah okay so is it for sale yes yeah
09:43how much are you looking for for that five and a half five and a half okay all right well i'll
09:47chip in then okay yeah my very rare tractor how much is that grand yeah okay next to it is a the
09:58trials bike yeah the trials bike how much is that 650. okie cokey now standing in front of us is this
10:07standard 14. three two three two does this run and ride it starts it wants tinkering with does it stop
10:16i drove it in here oh right okay from from where just outside yeah did you use the brakes to stop it
10:23yes i did yeah okay and they did stop yeah yeah yeah okay okay that's good all right good now i'm just
10:28wondering what to perhaps pair and wheel and deal with do you know what i mean what do you think i
10:34think it's gotta be what the little tractor truck tip of truck yeah not for a grand no nothing else
10:41you want to chuck in with it okay let me have a think three two so that would be four two and with the
10:50motorbike four eight four two the lot four four um four three
11:11now that is extraordinary we're down in bristol with russell and it's jam-packed shed full of
11:18curiosities we've offered four thousand two hundred for a standard car a tipper and a scrambler bike
11:25but he wants more four four um four three
11:33four two no four four for bargain well done go on then russ okay cheers four thousand four
11:48hundred of your finest british pounds we'll be winking your way great hey mate what a great day
11:53next day back at the shed we reveal all
12:01we have ourselves man okay it's a standard right motor but apart from that it's been turned into a
12:09military staff car kind of american tip doesn't it with knobbly rear tires yeah well we thought we might
12:16off-road it yeah i think it looks great and apparently it's got a good turn of speed it'll do 65 70 miles
12:23per hour yeah it is something that'll you have to concentrate on the steering yeah very much so
12:30look right i think we should just accessorize that i'm not quite sure quite how but i've got a feeling
12:35there could be a couple of american stars on the doors you know what i mean right okay i don't know
12:40it does apparently have a running problem as well might be a little bit of a carburettor clean coming
12:44up and potentially it might have a little bit of a weep in the cylinder head but that's an easy job
12:51is it can we just clear this up a slight running here does it run yes oh okay don't know
12:57yes it runs never tried it it runs but bubbles it might do i think it's rather a lovely thing
13:04that we're going to get going we're going to accessorize and then we could we've invaded
13:09oxfordshire a few times perhaps we should go to wiltshire this time and surprise them yeah
13:14yeah yeah deliver a general to wiltshire tidworth oh we could deliver a general yeah staff car
13:23as for the scrambler and the roller tipper if we have time we'll give them a bit of a fettle
13:30that the main job is the standard 14 with its u.s military paint job
13:35there we go four cylinders of standard fineness there shall i get in and have a look i mean
13:43bean's in there but i think i'm sure she'll move what are you going to do just crank it and see
13:47what happens you have to pull okay i'm going to get in this one watch out bean
13:51it's running but it's not happy so our nice little runner is not quite sprinting
14:07number four cylinder isn't firing the number three the leads can just disconnect it from the cap
14:12so that's an easy fix right okay so three's an easy fix four less so do you think we should take it for
14:18a spin and see if four chimes in i think we should change the spark button before first yeah i agree
14:23with you al overruled typical fuzz removes the spark plug and it looks like we were right to wait
14:32there we are okay our first remedy is to burn off the old fuel and crud
14:42but when fuzz tries again
14:44what's happening the end cylinder when i take the cap off quite away yeah it fires on that cylinder
14:53right okay i think we should change that plug yeah that's better yeah that's exactly the right one
14:57is it yeah well i hope it's all right because i bought that at a jumble ready ready third time lucky
15:04yeah that's it sounds good no that's much better it's not bouncing around like it was that sounds
15:13fantastic uh yeah i think we might have a little bit of a carburetor problem yeah maybe there's an
15:18extra here we can maybe can i just make a suggestion yes why don't we just pile in and take it down
15:22and drive them back good idea see if it works so what is it not worth fiddling with the air screw
15:26before we go quickly very quickly i can get a screwdriver all right mate
15:33overruled again alan's 30 second adjustment turns into 30 minutes as he discovers a new problem
15:41a worn gasket so it's leaking here for us when you turned off it squirted fuel out of this joint here
15:45oh right okay the solution is for fuzz to make a new one i'm using the hammer in the ring end of
15:54this spanner just to cut the hole in this homemade gasket
16:03after alan has filed down the flange connecting the carb to the air intake to make sure that it's flat
16:09they've re-plumbed the cob and try again okay ignition on okay pulling the starter now
16:19bit of choke
16:25it runs but it sounds even worse we could do with setting the idle
16:32it bogs down a little bit doesn't it
16:38hold on now i've got an idea i've got an idea as well what's that why don't we just take it for a
16:43drive let's take it for a drive just see what happens yeah because it may suddenly free up a bit
16:49unusually got a lovely tick over it's a beautiful tick over see if it drives let's go have a drive
16:54are you going to drive i don't mind well i'm closest i can drive i'll go in the back all right
17:00come on then oh hang on there's a cylinder head on my seat oh dear
17:04so finally we're in the car but getting it going doesn't quite kill the problem something's trying
17:10to chime in i still think we should take all the spark plugs out first yeah i think we should take all
17:17the spark plugs out also look at the points
17:25do you know what i i know there's some fettling to be done quite substantially yeah oh oh you pulled
17:30your knob off
17:35uh i'm just trying to get it in reverse reverse madam yeah
17:39no it's that's it that's it that's it yeah if you pull on the uh pull on the crook rather than the
17:45uh rather than the knob it'll uh it'll avoid that once this is sorted i'm planning a military themed
17:55outing but we've got our work cut out there's a lot to do isn't there to make it run beautiful
18:02yes for the first little test run i think that's the right result
18:05back at the shed alan and skid move on to the scrambler i'm quite looking forward to this al yeah
18:18me too this it looks virtually new doesn't it just dusty yeah i mean it is a far eastern kind of knock
18:24off cheap motorbike but i tell you what when it runs it's probably great fun so um should we just do
18:30the usual just see if it runs i mean it's fairly new i think i think it's going to be pilot jet
18:35blocked it's always the pilot yeah well especially with modern fuel got good ignition system on these
18:40you always have a good spark and let's see it's got some fuel in it yeah see if it starts yeah and
18:44then see what happens from there alan checks the fuel and then gives it a first kick it's got good
18:53compression the engine sounds good yeah it's not rightly is it no smoke these things don't get you
19:14that's trying isn't it yeah let's just let's just warm it up warm it up
19:18no it's definitely got some block jets so like the standard the scrambler has carb trouble
19:28while skid does some cleaning alan dismounts the carb and gives it some tough love
19:36well that's nice and clean in there that's a good sign so there's the pilot jet there's the main
19:40jet and that's the idle adjusting screw should we take the jets out and see if they're clear
19:44yeah the pilot jet's completely blocked can't see any light through it at all so i've got a wire brush
19:51bristle hopefully i can make that go through the jet it's very reluctant to go in the problem these
19:58days is the fuel it's the it's the ethanol in the fuel attacks the jets it causes the fuel to block up
20:03and make a big mess you can just see it in the float chain it started to happen here looks got that
20:07green tinge on here it's just started to take effect but because this hole is so small it blocks
20:14up very quickly and it stops the engine from running so i managed to find a really small wire brush with
20:18very fine bristles and that now goes through and goes through nicely alan refits the carb and goes
20:26again uh carbs done carbs cleaned out tank drains fresh fuel let's give it a go choke on
20:42let it warm up a little bit huh let it warm up a bit yeah yeah that's much better isn't it finally
20:48he gives the gears a quick check that's perfect that runs really well it's good i think we've got
20:55to take it out i'll get a crush on it all right then and away he goes
21:01it might be a cheap as chips chinese import that will soon be thrashed and crashed by someone with
21:12more spots than sense but if it allows alan to rediscover his inner teenager i'm all for it
21:19so a great end to the day but the scrambler's just one of our three purchases tomorrow we've got to take
21:29on the tipper but the big task is to get the standard ready for its military theme day
21:35will it cut the mustard or will it sink into the oxfordshire mud
21:43the knobs come off where's the knob
21:46we had an interesting day yesterday with our standard we got it running but it's not very happy
22:02today we're gonna have another try but first our other purchase the three-wheel dumper truck
22:08with a bsa engine i'll tell you what we should try and do is if we get it going i bet you we can get
22:14three of us on it oh easily yeah oh easily don't you think perhaps even the odd dog yeah we just take
22:20it down the road and back yeah i think we should put some fuel in it and just see if it goes okay let's
22:24do that i'll put a little totty we're not bothering with the spark plug scenario or anything like that
22:28we're just going to see if we get lucky just got this feeling it's just going to work fighting talk hiya
22:34so let's see four stroke isn't it yes it's a more stroke
22:39okay choke on bit of throttle bit of throttle a bit of crankage come on then cranker
22:50that's dead as a door now first attempt not so good so alan checks for a spark
22:56a massive spark right before you put that back here let's go keep all right yeah get some start me up
23:03round two
23:10oh that was a fire
23:13yeah yeah oh it's definitely something just fire
23:16what we need to do is go down to the workshop just file this square
23:26see that's at an angle oh right okay should be dead square like that all right do you want to try it
23:30with the um which way is it turning if you try it with the rope i'm going to follow that
23:34our tipper roller bsa oddity has dual start first attempt if that kicks back it's going to suck him down
23:42like a big sucker close was it second time with feeling and a slug of easy start ready yeah
23:52like all those bsa motorbikes it needs to be the patience but in the end it gets there
24:06yeah yeah pop off here we go no no ready
24:16jeez god blimey
24:22i have no idea how any of these controls work honest man we didn't get that far
24:29mainly because i put it into third and i didn't have enough revs i don't think i think we need to
24:34just the air screw do you think i think it's just i think it is pilot error
24:41i feel like it's moving forwards
24:46it's going remarkably well getting it going again
24:51did you see that fire it's not so easy but eventually we're away
24:56we're in third in 1950 our nash super tipper tractor retailed at 186 quid and was advertised as suitable
25:11for both the farm and the garden 75 years later it's still running but only just
25:18should we disembark yeah certainly felt really powerful yeah great fun though
25:24thank god we brought the starter cord ready yeah
25:27or maybe not
25:36off we go
25:44you've heard of a bull in a china shop but what about a tractor
25:47can he stop it that's the main thing no he's straight in the shed
25:55can i just say if i'm correct uh i was terrified because of the cutout switch i don't think works
26:02and i thought this will blunder its way through anything yeah well yeah you've got to actually
26:06stall it on the throttle that that electronical stop i don't think works you could have shoved the
26:11choke down al i was panicking no you didn't you took control i wanted to stop there once we realized
26:18you're safe it was really funny yeah it's quite heavy steering isn't it h i know it is the steering
26:23is heavy yeah you won't get many over 60s driving this no you won't i'm knackered absolutely trashed
26:32i'm gonna have to sit down come on let's go and sit down on the bench oh dear look boys i think
26:38look we got it going it runs right we just you know at some point give it a wash before sale
26:44but basically man that is something that someone is going to love who's into those kind of industrial
26:50kind of things you know they've just got tinker with a carburettor yeah okay well we can tinker
26:54with that and we can clean it but basically lads we have a three-wheel tipper slash dumper yeah slash
27:02roller yeah which is a runner and it certainly makes you laugh and it makes you laugh yes exactly it's fun
27:08yeah it nearly kills us but it nearly rests
27:14so with the tip assorted next day we're back on the standard alan thinks we've got an ignition
27:20problem so he starts with the distributor so what we're going to do is take the distributor off
27:25yeah put it down so i can make that work right okay basically i need to loosen off these two bolts
27:28and this should just lift out the engine out it comes and immediately alan notices something
27:34skit come look at this this may or may not be a contributory issue to our problem yeah look at
27:39that oh it's touching the distributor case that's going to short it out is that the live feed that's
27:44the live feed and this is actually loose look you can move it your finger see that slide it along
27:47oh yeah what do you need to do bend that down yeah we'll do that take it off bend that down
27:51make it tighter yeah yeah it may that may it may have been a definitely a contributory cause if not
27:55well with vibration it might be just occasionally archy let's get this top plate off and we can see what we've got to work with
28:00yeah yeah modern cars have computer-controlled ignition but engines from this era were run
28:06by electromechanical distributors like this they were full of small moving parts that were easily
28:12disturbed that hair there's a blonde hair there i'm not sure where that came from but i can tell you
28:17what that's definitely not henry's henry would not have been delving in here and also that's not
28:20highlighted very good point yes so let's throw it away those
28:24five minutes later it's reassembled can you think you sort of the problem uh i think it will
28:32i think all these things add up you know a little bit here a little bit there hopefully al i mean you
28:37never know back in it goes and we try again okay here we go hang on come on in hey bloody hell hey by the
28:46way the veterinary says that she's a little overweight yes about how many biscuits probably a couple of packs
28:56right okay here we go
28:57that's advanced isn't it
29:09try it
29:13you've broken it skid you've broken it al all right
29:17oh hey what was that so there you go even our resident genius doesn't always get it right
29:24what we should have done was took a picture of the setup before we took it apart
29:28we were exactly too excited to get on with the repair that we didn't take a picture
29:31the only solution is to dig out the hand crank and realign the pistons there you go you're on
29:37gonna get the piston number one top dead top dead center on compression stroke right and i can see
29:42where the rotor arm is pointing to and align the distributor cap in the correct place
29:45because i would suggest we're a little bit out turn it over now until you hear a hiss
29:49for my finger i try to keep going one keep going two turns later i stop there stop there
29:59alan seems confident but the engine won't play ball it's on two cylinders okay the back two
30:05cylinders aren't piling towards we have four aren't running pulled the caps off made no difference to
30:09the engine at all okay well but at least we got two running the same engine was later used in the mark
30:15four jag so it was well thought of but there's a lot more cleaning and adjusting before it's running
30:21on all four cylinders and ticking over properly that is lovely turn it off and see if it starts
30:27on its own with no throttle or anything here comes the acid test
30:31oh look at that that is lovely sounds amazing doesn't it yeah alan guy you you are a pair of
30:42geniuses i've just been an assistant yeah i'm a team effort this morning mate it's absolutely fantastic
30:47and obviously it just things really came together when i arrived yeah once the uh blonde highlights
30:52out the distributor it seems to be fine i think that's what was jamming it out i think it's a long
30:56it's a long way from a cast like you said one quiet tea come on suitably refreshed me and skid move
31:06on to the final stage of the resto enhancing the military theme with some extra us army stars
31:16it's all in the prep innit but i think these couple of us army stars are just uh you know
31:24just finish it off right there we go yeah skid carefully marks up the position for the stencil
31:35but there's a problem i can't find any low tack contact adhesive so i thought spray mount is what
31:41we were looking for so we're using what every child has yeah great um we're going to use this wiping
31:47just do the bit is the bits that are going to be a nightmare are the corners and the lines of the
31:53stars you need it stuck down because otherwise uh the paint gets under it it's going to bleed in it
31:59i don't know this is going to work i think it will i don't think there's going to be a problem i think
32:04it's going to go rather well what could possibly go wrong not a lot the five-pointed star has been used
32:10by the us army since 1942 when it was introduced to identify their gear i mean if this was in world
32:18war ii yeah yeah uh we'd be doing this under fire i'm sure of it no they did this before the d-day
32:25landings oh do they yes so that the planes could see who was theirs oh right when they got in the
32:30forests and things right aerosol paint didn't become widely available until the mid 1950s but for
32:37something like this it's a godsend not that skid always approves right leave that now let's do the
32:43other us army just leave it you're going to make it you're not making it worse oh hang on leave it
32:50alone ah just leave it please you'll come back in a minute i know you're looking at me that needs
32:59more just leave it a minute all right patience
33:01we repeat the process on the other side by which time the first side is dry and ready for a big reveal
33:15that's not gone well
33:21that is absolutely terrible we should have got spray mount you couldn't have done it worse
33:28even if you half close your eyes it's rubbish so alan's not the only genius who occasionally makes
33:35a bad move can i draw your attention away from to the square
33:44i don't think we've ever got something so wrong no that is proper wrong what are we going to do
33:50let it dry and try and t-cut those bits out we won't t-cut them out i might have a go
33:56because it's thicker on the letters it's not good it doesn't bode well i warned you
34:05tomorrow we're going to take the standard on a multi-surface military road trip to see how it runs
34:11with a bit of luck it'll get dirty enough to hide the stars but after all our engine problems
34:18will our standard go the distance
34:32three weeks ago in a shed near bristol now that is extraordinary it's a standard 14. we found a 1950s
34:40british saloon car in u.s military trim we tested it repaired it it bogs down a little bit doesn't
34:48it and enhanced it in a manner of speaking that is absolutely terrible now after a little bit of
34:57tidying up of our efforts it's ready for a proper test drive come road trip have i got a lovely day for
35:05us lined up all right interesting okay so now look i'll take you through it bit by bit we have before
35:11us a faux military vehicle now it also has off-road tires at the back that's good for gripping the most
35:19yeah so the big question in my mind is is there any point in them only if you go off-road yeah exactly
35:27then once we've had our fill of that i thought we might take it on a little road adventure just to
35:33try it out where i hear you ask where what we're going to do is we are going to one of my favorite
35:41museums oh yeah which is obviously a military museum yes that involves our helicopters and airplanes
35:48of course it will do yeah it might do yeah yeah yeah anyway we're going to middle wallop okay ah
35:54we're going to go to the army air museum right that's very cool okay but on the way i thought we might
36:00just have a little stop off for scorch okay yeah excellent well let's hope it makes it for us if
36:06not i'm blaming you to it's going to be fine i've got a feeling that this is going to be one of those
36:12great trouble-free journeys so off we go it's a shame that guy's not here to enjoy the fun but we're
36:22going to i can't believe guy's ill oh no i'm a bit worried about him he's never sick he's never ill
36:29our off-road test track is my mate nigel's farm are those knobbly rear tires for show
36:35or for go only one way to find out foot down and into second
36:40where's the knob you've lost your knob the knob's come off i'll just go just go novelish if you're
36:51all right yeah well look oh a little roll about somewhere okay we'll find the knob in a minute
37:01here we go i think it's really fast you know what feels really fast that is pretty quick isn't it
37:08it in the 1950s standards were occasionally used for rallying and judging from the way this one
37:15handles it should have happened more often pull it around there sir come on here we go here we are
37:27right see if you can stay on the strip down the middle back spring seats are working really well
37:31good yeah really good about i'm trying to stay on the strip watch it bouncing
37:40you know i think this is uh i think this has potential it has to be a classic rally car
37:47or a bit of a trailer anyway maybe uh slap some bigger springs on so it's a bit taller
37:52you think you can afford escort wouldn't you yeah
37:58this is such fun this is great i love it so far it's passing the test with flying colors
38:06it's not even overheating let's go i see a full throttle launch
38:09you're right on the apex you're coming up coming up to the back don't don't think i want to break
38:16i have to admit i had no idea the standard would drive so well but who's complaining
38:25back on the blacktop before we head for the museum in middle wallop time for a tea break
38:31i'm not worried about this getting to middle wallop at all no yeah we've even got working
38:35fuel gauge yeah we're working everything gauge man we can tell that it's working fuel gauge because
38:41it's just above zero yeah don't start all right just because i look we've got to sell it after we've
38:50been that's true you don't want to sell it with the surface of fuel exactly here we go look oh i'm
38:56parched yeah come on quick cup of tea then we'll get on yeah
38:59now look right i think we need a bit of clankage
39:07only because this car has excelled yeah it's brilliant it really is amazingly performance
39:13do you know what it is really shocking no rattles no bangs no speaks nothing and i tell you what
39:19there's no spluttering on the throttle no no we're doing at least 35 miles an hour i have no doubt
39:26that it's going to be an accomplished car on the open road i think so right drink up time's money
39:33i feel like some cake at the army museum well that'd be good
39:39it's another 40 miles to middle wallop so a good test for our car never beaten fourth gear off road
39:47because i was hammering it in third oh and that's traveling along nice look at that yeah from the late 30s
39:54onwards standard began to call these flying 14s because of their aerodynamic styling so the army
40:01flying museum seems like a good end point for our road trip come on then mate we'll just have a quick
40:07little rummage we need an education seeing as the standards got us here as curator susan explains the
40:15museum tells the story of the army flying corps and the various aircraft they've used during world war
40:22two army gliders played a vital role in the d-day landings can you imagine right no i'd go all right
40:28al fuzz what we're going to do is we're going to get into this glider right you're going to be towed
40:33across the channel right and then we're going to release the wire and you're going to crash into a
40:38field there are helicopters of all sizes and shapes and some realities like this jeep fitted with chopper
40:47blades sorry so hang on a second so they were looking about how to get behind enemy lines in
40:53world war ii yeah some really clever soul thought a willis jeep might actually be able to be controlled
41:01using a rotor blade yeah i mean it's sort of like almost an auto gyro system oh okay all right yeah
41:07so they were dropped out were they floats down and then floated down like a sycamore seed right i see
41:12can you imagine with the willis jeep look we're just going to float you down on the rotors like
41:16an auto rotate i'd just say please don't just go look i'll drive there it's fine whether anyone ever
41:24tried attaching chopper blades to a standard 14 like ours who knows but either way it flies
41:31have you enjoyed a little brief whizz round it's been worth the drive that's right i mean we'd like to
41:37present you with our very own exhibit for you to keep at the museum for the uh for the rest of time
41:45no she won't want it oh me oh right i thought i thought you meant the standard car no no no she
41:50wouldn't want that yeah that would be great oh well i'm here i'm available yeah i could just sort of
41:55live in the huey i just need a kettle yeah that's it really just pop out and tell tales absolutely
42:02actually talking about people who like tea we better find out from chopper roy whether that car's worth
42:05anything go on hey all right susan thank you so very much thank you very much all right it's an
42:09absolute pleasure i'll be back very shortly
42:17next day back at base we find out can i just apologize for our stenciling oh you'll kill it
42:25by taking it off road we've managed to kind of sort of subdue you know the problem i think it's kind of
42:31blended it extra patina yeah now i've got to tell you mate okay this thing absolutely flies that's it
42:39it's an acquired taste let's just face the musical yeah what do you reckon it's gonna be niche but you
42:47only want two people that want it and you're there aren't you so it's gonna oh mid to high through high
42:52threes mid mid would be a bit mean high threes definitely okay okay hang on well let's call that
43:00four we paid russell four four for the car plus the tipper and the scrambler so not a bad price
43:09i reckon the dump truck and the bike is a grand yeah yeah yeah there you go then all right so
43:15well what have we done made a monkey haven't we yeah that's right well yeah 500 yeah that's it
43:20approximately i think depending on obviously whether we're getting late threes or early fours oh
43:26that's true but you're a prospective monkey all right mate so there's potential 500 in it yeah it's
43:31a proper crowd puller yeah oh it's a crowd puller they would though wouldn't it yeah rather like you
43:35roy yeah not the crowd yeah it's lovely to see roy isn't it really nice i do like the t-shirt
