00:00We start at St. Paul, Minnesota, where 135 classics take on the great race, nine days,
00:24hidden checkpoints, and precision driving to South Carolina.
00:30Along the way, family teams and vintage flatheads show it's about more than miles, it's about
00:35memories.
00:37Next at Southfield Classics, brand new SE31T trucks roll out, GM 3100 replicas reimagined
00:45as all-electric hot rods.
00:47Finally, we hit Echo Park Speedway, where a 93 Toyota Supra gets a tune-up and prepares
00:53for the 2026 NOPE Nationals.
01:00We have 135-plus cars in the great race.
01:04Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance, and so the goal is you're
01:08going to stay on target.
01:09From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:12Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard, it's a complete family member.
01:16It's an experience.
01:17All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:20Winning an ace in the great race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you
01:24up.
01:25Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:26Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:28I guess we'll find out tonight.
01:29We're kicking off the great race in St. Paul, Minnesota.
01:32135 cars, hidden checkpoints, and nothing but precision driving.
01:37It's family, it's teamwork, and it's nine days of pure adventure all the way to South Carolina.
01:43Welcome to another great season of Sam's Garage.
01:48Check it out.
01:49We got the 240 back in action.
01:51We're at the great race, St. Paul, Minnesota, the start of the first day.
01:55Today is a practice run day.
01:57We just had a driver's meeting.
01:58Doug is in the building taking care of some business, and we're going to be going all
02:02the way down to South Carolina this year.
02:04You guys don't want to miss it.
02:05We're going to bring you half the episode, double the action from the great race.
02:09Even starting off at one of the biggest events in the country, which is the back to the 50s
02:14at the fairgrounds right here in St. Paul.
02:16I can't wait to go to the show tomorrow, where the start of the race is going to take off
02:20at noon from the show.
02:22I cannot wait.
02:23Volunteer.
02:24It's my sixth year on the great race.
02:26I kind of got wrangled into this six, seven years ago by Jeff Stone, the director of the
02:31great race.
02:32Riverside, California was my first stop.
02:34Showed up, and what you see in the background is what Jeff told me I needed to set up every
02:39day at the great race, at the finish line every day.
02:42So six years, seven years, we've been doing this every day for the great race, and everything
02:47that the great race brings to town each night.
02:50Me and my crew is in charge of setting up, and we've been doing it ever since.
02:54The camaraderie of the race cars, the race individuals, the teams, the drivers, the crew,
03:00Coker Tire, everybody, it's great being here.
03:04You look forward to it every year.
03:05It's only nine days, and then we get to spend 11 months and two weeks trying to figure out
03:11how to get back and where we're going.
03:12My oldest two sons have been with me two different years on the great race, and this year my youngest
03:17son's with me.
03:19Great family event.
03:20Jeff's wonderful to work for, and the whole great race crew.
03:23We look legit, right, because we've got the RV, we've got two chase vehicles, we've got the
03:27race car, we've got ladies in the background sitting with their dog.
03:30We've got the whole family out here to make sure that we're going to complete this race.
03:34And we're no longer novice this year.
03:36We're actually sportsmen, which means instead of coming in 89th place, we may come in 87th
03:42place, as long as Doug does his job, and I do my job driving.
03:46And you guys, this is a slow, technical race.
03:48It is all about how well you can follow instructions and drive the car at a steady pace, slowly.
03:55And so you think that this is easy.
03:57Actually much harder than a race you would normally go, you're trying to beat the time
04:00and go very fast.
04:02Much harder race than that.
04:03So you want to stay tuned.
04:04It's going to be very fun.
04:08Tim's quarters, okay?
04:09This is where Tim does all the driving.
04:11We have a new guy.
04:12His name is Anthony.
04:13And there's Deanne.
04:14She is here for the support team as well.
04:17She is Doug's better half.
04:19Fourth year, me and my brother.
04:20Each time we run the great race, we find something different that needs to be fixed on the car.
04:25And I think at this point, on our fourth year, I think we're in really good shape.
04:30We've rebuilt the transmission, we've built the engine, suspension, so the brakes for anybody
04:35that's into cars.
04:36If you don't have a support crew, you need to be able to work on your own car, which that's
04:40what we are.
04:41We're our own support crew.
04:42But we've got through everything, and here we are again.
04:49So what we've got here is a 1972, so we have a choke.
04:52That's in order to get the carburetors all ready to go when it's cold.
04:55That way it'll dump fuel.
04:57Let's see what happens.
04:58Let's see if this Nissan's as reliable as we think it is.
05:02You know, there's another type of choke too, and that's when Sam pisses me off and I do
05:08this.
05:09So that could happen today.
05:10If it doesn't happen today, it's going to happen at some point this week.
05:13Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:20Brought to you by the following companies.
05:43Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NHOil Undercoding.
06:03The great race isn't just about cars.
06:06It's about family, heritage, and the thrill of the journey.
06:11From father-son teams to daughters navigating, these classics are rallying 2,300 miles with
06:16original flatheads and three speeds still going strong.
06:19We've been doing this since 2005 was our first year, so about 20 years now.
06:24It all got started with my grandpa.
06:26He started in 2000, father-son team.
06:29We do, in addition to the great race, we do a thing called the ISDE, which is an international
06:34motorcycle race that we support Team USA for every year, and a different country every
06:37year as well.
06:38The original 21-stud flathead V8 motor, three-speed transmission, original driveline.
06:44We actually just got done replacing the driveshaft coupler on the rear end.
06:48We ended up shearing almost all the splines off of it, so we just got that back together
06:53about an hour ago, so we're ready to go rallying now.
06:56The great race is about, really, in your case, and a lot of cases out here, hanging out with
07:00your family.
07:01Yeah, my daughter is the navigator, so she is the one responsible for keeping us on
07:05track and on time.
07:06I'm just the driver, which makes it a lot easier because if there's a mistake made, I don't
07:11get yelled at, and I don't yell at her.
07:13That is so true, right?
07:14The driver's got it made.
07:15Yep.
07:16You can't replace the time with them, so it's a fun sport.
07:19I really like the great races, good people that are out there.
07:24We take it to car shows, we take it to Cars and Coffee, we just take it whenever we want
07:28to go somewhere that people want to take a look at you, so that is so cool.
07:31And this is going to easily handle 2,300 miles.
07:33Yes.
07:34Very nice car.
07:35I think so.
07:36Real anxious to get to the fairgrounds tonight.
07:38We're at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
07:42I am here with my family at Back to the 50s.
07:46We work at thekeyguys.com.
07:49It's our family owned business, and we've been coming here for about 17 years.
07:55I'm not familiar with the great race, but I've now heard about it, and it sounds very
08:00cool and I'm excited to see it.
08:01I do like classic hot rods.
08:03If I could have one, it'd be a little bit too new to be here, but I would love to have
08:08a 64 and a half or 65 Mustang Fastback.
08:14Back to the 50s show.
08:15Look at all the people.
08:16Look at all the cars around us.
08:18This is the biggest event in the country every year.
08:2110,000 to 15,000 cars show up registered.
08:24That's not including the people who are coming through the gate.
08:26Pretty cool.
08:27We had a very interesting day today.
08:30We ended up with a really good score overall.
08:31We still came out with an ace.
08:33A seven-second day.
08:34Three seconds of that we can't be blamed for.
08:36Right before the last checkpoint on the day, we come around the corner and there's the wonderful
08:40public.
08:41Just decided to park their car in the middle of the road, which why wouldn't you?
08:44I mean, that's what roads are for, right?
08:45Right.
08:46And so we come up.
08:47We have to stop behind this car.
08:49The car freaks out.
08:50We did the right thing and started yelling curse words at the top of our lungs and continued
08:54on our way once they got out of our way.
08:56We're trying to make up all the time we lost right there.
08:58We come around a corner.
08:59Boom.
09:00Checkpoint.
09:01We got caught with three of our seven seconds on the day right there.
09:06You go to the website.
09:07You're going to register.
09:08You're going to get online.
09:09There's going to be a two-year waiting list.
09:10Once you get here, you're going to go through what you saw Doug going through when you're
09:13going to go through inspections, when you get all your stickers if you haven't already
09:16put them on your car.
09:18There's a lot of stuff on YouTube for the rookies to learn how to do it.
09:22There's a lot to it.
09:23For you pilots out there, to kind of give you an example of what it's like, it's like
09:27instrument flying for eight hours.
09:29You've got to be so focused all the time, otherwise you can miss a turn.
09:34Just in a blink, you can miss it.
09:36Or your speed may not be right.
09:37Absolutely.
09:38The only thing you guys need is a 1974 or older vehicle, and this is the back to the
09:4250s show, so everything 64 and older is only allowed here.
09:46But they made an exception for us because we do have cars up to 74 here amongst the show.
09:51So that's pretty cool they made that exception for us.
09:53It's an incredible turnout, it was so much fun today, it shook the rust off.
09:57We just had a fantastic time.
09:59Today we're going to be showing you guys how you can prevent rust.
10:13It's a 1968 Corvette, numbers matching big block, four speed car.
10:17I bought it in October, restored it, just a great car, taking it on the power tour.
10:21I drive it, try to put some miles on it, but not too many because of the original motor.
10:26And we're here today to try to do a little rust prevention.
10:29There's an issue with the frame in that the cross rails and the side rails.
10:32I noticed when I was under the car a thousand times doing the restoration.
10:36You can see little pieces of surface rust up inside the frame rails.
10:40They have drain holes, but I think moisture still gets up there and creates some surface
10:43rust.
10:44So I've blown that out to blow as much of the rust out as possible.
10:47And you and I had a conversation about it and you recommended that we use the NHLU spray.
10:52We're going to use a nozzle, we're going to take this, we're going to spray it all in
10:55the cavities of the frame.
10:56This is also very good that if you guys got engines sitting around like I do, stored,
11:00waiting for a project in the future, the cylinders can get rusty.
11:04So take your sparkler out and spray some of this in the cylinders as well and that'll
11:07do a nice coating of oil, unlike something that would maybe coat it for a second then
11:11run off.
11:12This will actually stay.
11:13And then when you go to crank the engine up, it'll just burn out completely.
11:16So you want to do rust prevention?
11:18Check out NHLU.
11:21Welcome back to more Sam's Garage presented by NHLU.
11:31At Southfield Classics, we're checking out the brand new SC31T trucks, replicas of the
11:37iconic GM 3100, built from scratch right here in the USA.
11:43These aren't restorations.
11:45They're all electric hot rods with Wilwood brakes, custom chassis and zero maintenance
11:49headaches.
11:50Here we are today at Southfield Classics.
11:53I'm here with Dan Paul.
11:55He is the COO of this manufacturing company of building the most iconic series of GM trucks.
12:01Correct.
12:02The 3100 replica that we built under the new replica car law.
12:08And you guys, these are done to the nines.
12:11Think of it as a hot rod, right?
12:12It's got all the components you would use when building these cars from scratch.
12:17Wilwood brakes, quick performance nine inch for your end, boxed in frame because you guys
12:21built the frame from scratch.
12:22Correct.
12:23We do all our own chassis work.
12:24We do all our own body placement, fitment.
12:26All the body panels are built in house.
12:28So basically everything on this truck is built in house with all brand new parts.
12:32Now let's talk about the power train of these vehicles.
12:34You see, they're absolutely beautiful hot rod trucks.
12:37These are brand new, but they're high voltage, all electric.
12:40And that's what makes them even cooler because you guys cool is cool, fast is fast.
12:45And I remember being in the kid in the eighties going to Radio Shack and getting a remote control
12:49car, hearing those sounds and having the fun that you had with them.
12:52Now it's just a bigger version of it.
12:54You're out there.
12:55You got smiles ear to ear because you're in this beautiful truck and it just takes you
12:59back to your kid because of the noise that you're hearing.
13:02Correct.
13:03It sounds a lot like a, like you said, like a small RC car only amplified by 10.
13:07So you got a nice whine or a whistle, but that's the only sound you're going to
13:10hear.
13:11If you're in drive mode, regular mode, you can actually creep up on people.
13:14They never hear you coming.
13:15Absolutely.
13:16And these are got no issues as far as maintenance goes.
13:19You've got regular maintenance, you got brakes, you got tires.
13:22You'd only have any minimal cooling hoses and the cooling system is only there to keep
13:26the inverter cool, right?
13:27Correct.
13:28It's only there.
13:29It's a low pressure system.
13:30It only has about five pounds of pressure and it's basically just to travel and pump
13:33through the system, keep the batteries and the motor and the inverter cool as you go.
13:37Yeah.
13:38No, no issues as far as reliability goes.
13:40These high voltage vehicles don't have any of those problems.
13:42So it's just nothing but absolute satisfaction and joy.
13:45Done to the nines.
13:47Brand new vehicles.
13:48Every part of them is brand new and through this season on Sam's garage, we're going to
13:52be showing you every bit of these vehicles.
13:55There are individual components and how they're assembled, what makes them new and how they're
13:59certified.
14:00Correct.
14:01We're going to go through the whole process of how we actually build a vehicle from scratch,
14:04from absolute nothing, build up through the whole process to we actually complete a vehicle
14:08by the end of the season.
14:09And if you guys are in the customization industry, you know that if you wanting a car, let's say
14:14you want a custom car, you're looking at two to five, six years, sometimes even more.
14:18In this case, you're going to have a brand new manufactured vehicle within six months'
14:22time.
14:23And they're going to build it just like that Restomod.
14:25Correct.
14:26We're actually going through the process at least two times.
14:28Sometimes it's multifaceted and multifit.
14:30But what we're trying to do is basically eliminate that time factor to where you don't
14:33have to wait two years to have your Restomod.
14:35This way you can actually come in, pick your colors, pick your interior, pick your wheels
14:39and tires, and you're on the road in six months.
14:41And these things are all built right here in America.
14:43GM certified bits and pieces.
14:44We're going to show you how to put them together.
14:46The original frame rails, they get modified right here in Brazelton, Georgia.
14:49They get assembled, they are fully 100% USA made, and that makes them even cooler.
14:54It does, and it helps with a lot of the tariffs that are going on now.
14:58We try to keep as much as we can in the United States to keep everything moving forward.
15:01All right, Dan, so let's say somebody is interested in purchasing one of these vehicles.
15:04What steps do they have to take?
15:05So the process basically is to contact us, come out and talk with us.
15:08We'll sit down in the office and we'll go over and build projections, what you want
15:12it to look like, and then we'll talk about price and value.
15:15Usually what we do is we take a deposit up front to get started, get all the parts in.
15:18Once we have all the parts in place, then we start production on the vehicle.
15:21So you can go to Southfield Classics, come on out, and you can get yourself a brand new SC31T.
15:27Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
15:40Is brought to you by the following companies.
15:43Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NHOU.
16:04We're getting ready for the 2026 Nopi Nationals.
16:16And nothing says iconic like a 93 MK4 Toyota Supra.
16:21From its legendary twin turbo inline six to 2,000 plus horsepower single turbo builds, this car rewrote the rule book.
16:32Getting ready for the Nopi Nationals. By the time you guys see this, you'll be thinking about 2026 September Nopi Nationals.
16:37Next week, September 13th and 14th, we have a big show going on.
16:41And this right here is one of the most iconic cars that is part of that show.
16:44So this right here is a 1993 MK4 Toyota Supra.
16:48It's funny because behind me is its bigger brother.
16:51Back in the day when they made these two cars, this was the rich man Supra.
16:55It's identically the same as far as the chassis and powertrain goes, but non-turbo.
16:59Then later on, this became the poor man Supra. So that's kind of funny.
17:04What made this vehicle so iconic was the power plant that's in it.
17:11This is an inline six twin turbo made 320 horsepower from the factory.
17:15With some bolt-ons and a little bit of tuning, you can make 415 at the wheels.
17:20But if you were to remove the factory turbos and put on a big single turbo with equal runners on the exhaust manifold,
17:27you can make upwards of 2,000, 3,000 horsepower depending on how well-built the engine block is.
17:33So the engine is very, very, very strong, popular for that reason.
17:38It's one of the dominating engines on the street.
17:41That's why they're so iconic.
17:43Forever they've been completely supported by the aftermarket community and nothing has slowed down since.
17:48So this right here is very iconic, but it's got a couple problems.
17:51This is an old school build. It's absolutely beautiful.
17:54It's kept itself in very nice shape.
17:56It was built in the late 90s. It's got a wide body kit on it.
17:59And it's got the original spark plugs tie in both everything since 1993, which makes it 32 years old.
18:05So we have a misfire and we're going to diagnose the misfire.
18:12First thing I would do to diagnose a misfire, this thing has problems.
18:15We do have a check engine light for a code 14.
18:17What happens is that wire is really small and it starts to corrode under the hood.
18:22Right at the connector, about two inches from the pin, it's all green.
18:26So what I did was I went back in about two or three inches further, put a new little pigtail,
18:31took the pin out, put the wire onto the pin, put it back into the connector and fixed that portion of it.
18:35The first thing I did was also go to the coils and I unplugged the coils one by one to see which cylinder is misfiring.
18:42It's hard to get to the injectors and it's hard to get to the exhaust manifold with a temperature gun.
18:46The best way to do it is to go through each coil pack and disconnect them and see which one does not change the way the engine runs.
18:54That'll be your misfire. In this case, it's cylinder number two.
18:57So the first thing I did was change the wire and make sure it's fixed.
19:01I have an igniter in my toolbox from back in the old days.
19:04I went ahead and plugged it up making sure it's not the igniter.
19:07So then I went ahead to the computer and made sure that the pin for that reference signal wire is good.
19:12Everything under the computer is non corroded and totally fine.
19:16So I went ahead and changed out the computer because I have those in my toolbox as well.
19:21See, back in the day we built a bunch of these.
19:22Now I'm able to continue on with my maintenance.
19:25What I'm going to do is change out all the spark plugs.
19:28And what's going to happen is half of those connectors are going to break because they're 32 years old.
19:32So I'm going to have to get new connectors and re-pin them.
19:35Put new spark plugs in, put new valve cover gaskets in.
19:39The time belt is original. This is a non-interference motor, but why take the chance, right?
19:43So I'm going to go ahead and change out the time belt.
19:45The water pump, if you want to change it out, you can.
19:47This is a Toyota. They last forever.
19:49In some cases, an old Toyota water pump is better than the new one off the shelf.
19:54So I'm going to go ahead and put a time belt on it, put spark plugs on it.
19:57Make sure everything is cool.
19:59And I'm going to take it down to Echo Park Speedway this weekend at the Nopi Nationals Super Show.
