Riley's boss Hawkins asks Chester to watch his dog. While under his care the pooch run aways and Riley panics.

00:00This is William Bendix in The Life of Riley, with Marjorie Reynolds as Peg, Tom DeAndre as Gillis,
00:10Lugene Sanders as Babs, Wes Morgan as Junior, and Gloria Blondell as Honeybee.
00:18Produced by Tom McKnight, and directed by Abby Berlin.
00:23Skilled, whether it applies to the field of sports, or to the less strenuous task of wielding a paintbrush, calls for concentration and experience.
00:37This is also true in industry, where thousands of skilled craftsmen apply their know-how every day, such as here at Cunningham Aircraft.
00:46Let's pause here for a better look at one of the skilled workers performing a difficult task.
00:51In this case, the artisan happens to be Chester A. Riley.
00:56Yes, no matter how difficult the problem might be, the trained worker tackles it with confidence.
01:05Broke his shoelace.
01:07Oh well, maybe this is not one of Riley's skillful days.
01:13Anybody got extra shoelace?
01:15Oh sure, I always carry a couple of spares.
01:18What shoe do you want it for, the right or the left?
01:21Never mind, I'll tie it with a piece of string.
01:23Ah, wait Ryle, you're in luck.
01:25I got a brand new pair in my lunchbox.
01:27Oh, you're a lifesaver, Otto.
01:39Now, you better pick one out, Ryle.
01:41I can't ever tell which one is for the left shoe, and which one is for the right shoe.
01:45Oh, look, Otto, he didn't mean, I mean, it don't make no sense.
01:53Thanks.
02:04Riley.
02:06Oh, hiya, Hawkins.
02:07I was just fixing my shoelace.
02:09Well, I didn't think you were building an airplane.
02:10Come on, I got a job for you.
02:16This is a new doghouse for Cunningham's prized pooch.
02:19Oh, it's some doghouse.
02:21That baron Max Millian lives better than some people I know.
02:24Yeah, you're telling me.
02:25Now the boss is going to take him cross-country in his station wagon,
02:28and he wants us to install this in the wagon so it won't bounce around.
02:31Gotcha.
02:32Are you sure you can do it, Riley?
02:33Where's the station wagon?
02:34Right outside.
02:36That baron Max Millian is a lucky dog traveling all over the country in his own private doghouse.
02:41I wouldn't mind being a dog myself if I could be Mr. Cunningham's son.
02:46Let's go.
02:58Riley.
03:00Riley, what are you doing to my station wagon?
03:01Well, Hawkins says you wanted a doghouse put in there, so he asked you to do it?
03:07Well, I did a good job, Mr. Cunningham.
03:09Look.
03:11Yes, sir.
03:12Baron Max Millian is going to be top dog on this trip.
03:14Well, it seems to be solid, all right.
03:16Oh, it ought to be.
03:17I put at least a dozen bolts in the floor alone.
03:21Bolts?
03:22Yeah.
03:22Look.
03:23Oh, no.
03:34Riley.
03:35You put the bolts through the gas tank.
03:39Yeah, well, you see, there was...
03:40I couldn't...
03:41What did he say?
03:44It's a wonder Cunningham didn't fire you right on the spot.
03:47Didn't he say nothing to you, Riley?
03:49Well, he started to, but when I offered to siphon gas out of my car, he just looked at me and walked away.
03:54Riley, I ought to have my head examined for letting you tackle that job in the first place.
03:59Anybody could have made the same mistake.
04:01I don't think I could, Riley.
04:05You've got a knack for them things.
04:07Now Cunningham has got to make the trip by plane.
04:10That means he can't take his dog along.
04:12This whole thing was my fault.
04:15Well, I'm not going to let him leave Baron Max Millian behind.
04:18Wait a minute.
04:22What are you going to do with that blowtorch?
04:23Well, I'm going to solder up the holes in the gas tank.
04:26I know that's right.
04:27Do you want to blow your brains out?
04:28What brains?
04:30When he puts his dog in the kennels, he ought to put you in with him.
04:33Now get to work.
04:37Gillis, I got an idea.
04:39I don't know what it is, Riley.
04:41But I think twice before I do anything.
04:43I don't have to even think once.
04:45My mind is going into this thing with both eyes wide open.
04:51I had intended taking the Baron with me on my trip,
04:54but due to your blunder, I have to leave him here in the kennel.
04:57Well, that's what I came to see you about, Mr. Cunningham.
05:00You don't have to leave him at no old kennel.
05:02I can take care of him at my house.
05:03Oh, no, thank you.
05:05Come back for my trip and find my dog bolted to the floor?
05:08Please, Mr. Cunningham, I understand dogs.
05:12They may be just dumb animals to some people,
05:14but to me, they're no different than I am.
05:16I'll go along with that.
05:18You don't want to go to no old kennel, do you, boy?
05:22Now look here, Riley.
05:23Well, he does seem to like it, doesn't he?
05:29Sure.
05:30I may not have no pedigree, but he knows I'm dog's best friend.
05:34Well, the family's away.
05:36I'll treat him just like one of the family.
05:39Even better.
05:40He can sit in my easy chair nights and look at television.
05:44I guess you mean well, Riley.
05:46All right.
05:48You keep him till I come back from the trip.
05:50Oh, thanks, Mr. Cunningham.
05:52He'll be happier with you than he would be in the kennel.
05:54Why, sure.
05:55At the kennel, he wouldn't have no human faces to look at.
05:58I still say he'd be happier with you.
06:04Thank you again, Mr. Cunningham.
06:06You won't be sorry.
06:08Come on.
06:15Gosh, Mom.
06:16How much longer do we have to wait?
06:17I'm starved.
06:18Dad's never been this late before.
06:20Well, I suppose we could start.
06:23He ought to be home soon.
06:24But I can't understand...
06:26Hello, Peg.
06:31Riley.
06:33What happened?
06:34Well, they wouldn't let us on the bus.
06:36We had to walk all the way home.
06:37We?
06:38Yeah, me and Byron Maximilian.
06:40A dog.
06:48Oh, he is beautiful.
06:50What's his name?
06:53Jesse James?
06:57Stop feeding him, Junior.
07:00Mr. Cunningham says he's only supposed to have one meal a day and he's already had it.
07:04I didn't feed him. He helped himself.
07:06Well, I don't care if Mr. Cunningham is your boss.
07:09Why did you let him give you this animal?
07:11He didn't give him to me, Peg.
07:13I'm just taking care of him until Mr. Cunningham gets back from his trip.
07:17Oh, gosh. You mean we can't keep him?
07:19Now, Baron Maximilian don't mind visiting with us, Junior.
07:22But he wouldn't want to live here.
07:29Are you sure of that, Dad?
07:34Max!
07:37Oh, Bonnie, my dinner!
07:39Max, you've already had your dinner!
07:41Oh, you're a pig.
07:42What?
07:43I'm a dog.
07:44You're...
07:44Max!
07:45Stop it!
07:46He's sitting in your place, Junior. Do something.
07:57Is that all I get for supper? A jelly sandwich?
08:00Don't look at me, Dad.
08:02Speak to your house guest.
08:03Don't be so happy.
08:09I don't mind doing dishes when I eat out of them, but when a dog is...
08:12Don't be upset, Peg. Baron Maximilian is new around here. He don't know any better.
08:16How long will Mr. Cunningham be gone?
08:18Only a month.
08:20By that time, we'll have Max so well-trained, he won't go near the table until we do.
08:23A month?
08:24I don't think I can stand it.
08:26Why not, Mom?
08:27Max is a good dog. He won't give us any trouble.
08:29Not much, he won't. Look at the trouble he's caused around here already.
08:34Please, don't say things like that, Peg. He's very sensitive.
08:38He can sleep in my room.
08:39Well, what's wrong with the garage?
08:42That's a wonderful idea, Junior.
08:44When I tell Mr. Cunningham that you gave up your room so Max could have your bed, he might even give me a raise.
08:51Riley.
08:52Huh?
08:52Oh, he meant...
08:54I like dogs as well as you, but a dog this size, well, maybe after I get used to him.
09:02Okay, Peg. I'll make his bed in the garage.
09:06Tonight, anyway.
09:08And tomorrow being Saturday, I'll build a big fence around the backyard so he'll have plenty of room to run around.
09:15Gee, it sure is going to be tough to give him up once we get used to him.
09:18Yeah, he seems like one of the family already.
09:21He's got your eyes, Peg.
09:28No, I mean, the way he looks at me.
09:31Just like you do when I get dark for being late at the plant.
09:35Will you please take that dog out to the garage?
09:38Oh, okay.
09:40Come on, Max.
09:49Don't you worry, Max.
09:51If I hear any prowlers, I'll wake you up.
09:57There we are.
09:57That'll give him plenty of room to run around him without wrecking the flower beds.
10:00What makes you think he's going to stay in there?
10:02Don't be stupid, Gillis.
10:04If you had a fence around you three feet over your head, do you think you could get out?
10:09I never thought of that.
10:10Well, certainly.
10:10Here, put him in.
10:12Oh, here.
10:13That's the boy, Max.
10:15There we are.
10:19A padlock?
10:20Well, certainly.
10:21There's nothing to worry about.
10:22I've got the key in my pocket.
10:23Come on.
10:24He's all right.
10:24His mother must have been a kangaroo.
10:37Junior, what's the dog doing in the house?
10:44Pop asked me to take care of him while he makes the fence hurt.
10:47Gee, Mom, I wish I could have a dog like this.
10:50Well, someday, perhaps.
10:51It wouldn't be any trouble.
10:53Well, not for you, Junior, but I'm the one who would have to take care of him all day long.
10:56Junior!
10:57Junior!
10:57I guess the fence is up.
10:58Come on, Max.
11:00Come on.
11:03I'd like to see him get over this fence now.
11:05If he goes down, I his nose will bleed.
11:11Stop.
11:11There you are, son.
11:13Put him right in there.
11:14Go ahead, Max.
11:14Attaboy.
11:16Gee, Pop, I hate to see him all fenced up like that.
11:19Well, so do I, son.
11:20But if anything ever happened to Baron Max Midian, Mr. Cunningham would never forgive me.
11:23And with your record, Ryle, you ain't got many boners left.
11:27For your information, Mr. Gillis, Max couldn't jump over that fence if his mother and his father were kangaroos.
11:33And I'll prove it to you.
11:34Come on, Max.
11:35Come on, boy.
11:42You convinced me, Ryle?
11:47Yeah, you didn't think I could do it, huh?
11:49But just thought I'd show you once I put my head to the grindstone, anything can happen.
11:54Here, son, put the tools away.
11:55How about a cup of coffee?
11:56I'm with you.
11:57Ah, Gillis.
12:05You get a nice warm feeling when you do a favor for people, you know?
12:09You mean like taking care of Cunningham's dog while he's away?
12:12Yeah.
12:13And it ain't like he asked me to do it, you know.
12:14I came up with the idea myself.
12:16I know.
12:17And you went to a lot of trouble to build that fence.
12:19Yeah.
12:20Watching him day and night, seeing that he doesn't catch cold, feeding him.
12:25And with your own dough.
12:27Yeah.
12:29Do you think he appreciates it?
12:31No.
12:32If I ask him to take care of my dog, do you think he'd do it?
12:35Never.
12:35This is one time I'm entitled to a lousy raise and he ain't even around to give it to me.
12:39Wow.
12:40What are you getting all steamed up about?
12:43Because you...
12:44Answer the phone.
12:49Hello.
12:50What?
12:51Uh-oh.
12:52Yeah.
12:53Yeah, Mr. Cunningham.
12:54It's me.
12:55Ronnie?
12:56There's been a sudden change in plans.
12:59Yeah, that's right.
13:00I postponed my trip for two weeks.
13:04He postponed his trip?
13:06Well, as long as you got him on the phone, why don't you ask him for a raise?
13:08Don't be stupid.
13:10No, not you, Mr. Cunningham.
13:12I was talking to Gillis.
13:14So as long as I'm not going away, you may as well bring Baron Maximilian back.
13:19Good.
13:20I'll be expecting you.
13:22You want to ride over with me?
13:26Yeah, I'll hold the dog and you'll drive.
13:28Okay.
13:35You know, I hate to take Baron Maximilian back.
13:38I miss him already.
13:43So do I.
13:45Gillis!
13:46He's gone!
13:47How did he get over the fence?
13:49He didn't.
13:50Look.
13:52Looks like his mother and father weren't kangaroos after all.
13:58No.
13:59They must have been gophers.
14:01Matt!
14:02Matt!
14:03Robert!
14:07Let's try again.
14:09You go one way, I'll go the other.
14:11Thanks, kids.
14:12He's about that long.
14:14He's got big ears to stand up.
14:15You killed him.
14:15You know that you're a Riley.
14:17Huh?
14:19Oh, yeah.
14:20That's right.
14:20I wasn't thinking, Peg.
14:22That's normal.
14:24If I don't get that dog back, I don't want to get fired.
14:26I'll never get that raise.
14:28Well, maybe the best thing to do would be to tell Mr. Cunningham what happened.
14:31Peg.
14:32He already thinks I'm stupid.
14:34Why should I give him any more proof?
14:35I'll take another look around out back.
14:42Gillis, what am I going to do?
14:44I wish I could help you around.
14:46Let's see.
14:48If I was a dog, where would I go?
14:51No, that's no good.
14:52I already owe the butcher for last week.
14:54Yes, sir.
14:56I'm going out.
14:57Probably somebody found a dog calling you to tell you about it.
15:01Go ahead.
15:01Yeah.
15:02Well, yeah, sure.
15:04Probably.
15:05Hello?
15:06Did you find...
15:07What?
15:07Who?
15:09No, no, no, no.
15:10Mr. Cunningham, Riley ain't here.
15:11I'm out looking for the dog.
15:12I mean...
15:13Riley, what are you talking about?
15:15Why aren't you on your way over here with Baron Maximilian?
15:18Well, I can't bring him back right now, Mr. Cunningham.
15:22Why not?
15:24Well, the Baron is taking a nap and he left orders not to be disturbed.
15:29Riley, I don't know what's going on over there.
15:32Would you get that dog back here at once?
15:34Yes, sir.
15:36Yeah, Mr. Cunningham.
15:37What is that, Mr. Cunningham?
15:39Don't let go of the leash.
15:40No, no, sir.
15:41I'm holding it here.
15:42Yes, sir.
15:43I got it.
15:44I'll hold him a while, Riley.
15:46Oh, thanks.
15:47Cut it out, Gillis.
15:48Can't you see I'm in enough trouble?
15:51Gillis, I got an idea.
15:53Now what?
15:53The dog pound.
15:55Maybe they got a dog there that looks like the Baron.
15:57Hey, not bad.
15:59How did you think of that?
16:00When my brains get together with my mind, they always come up with the right answer.
16:03I'll get my jacket and go with me.
16:05Yeah, go ahead.
16:05I got a hammer to you, Riley.
16:13I never thought you could find anything this close to Baron Maximilian.
16:16Well, he's almost perfect.
16:18A little dab of shoe polish on his face right here, and nobody will know the difference.
16:22What's his name, Mr. Bixby?
16:23A Myrtle.
16:24Myrtle.
16:25There, you see?
16:26It's Myrtle.
16:30What a revolting development this is.
16:32Did you want a male dog, Mr. Riley?
16:34I've got to have a male.
16:36Oh, no trouble at all.
16:37I have the twin to Myrtle.
16:39Her brother, Butch.
16:40Come, Myrtle.
16:40What a narrow escape that was.
16:44Here we are.
16:45Identical twins.
16:47They sure are.
16:48Well, he's just what I'm looking for.
16:50Come on, Butch.
16:51Just a moment, Mr. Riley.
16:53Before I can release the animal, it's required that the new owner meet certain qualifications.
16:58But what do you mean?
16:59We only want to make sure that you will be kind to the animal and that you have a fenced-in yard.
17:04Oh, he don't need no fence.
17:05He's going back to Mr. Cunningham as fast as I can get him there.
17:08Oh, I see.
17:10You're giving him to someone as a present.
17:12That's right.
17:13And Mr. Cunningham is in no position to look a gift dog in the mouth.
17:16Come on, Max.
17:17Come on, Butch.
17:17Come on, come on.
17:19Come on, come on.
17:27That shoe collars really did the trick, Riley.
17:30Yeah.
17:31Now if I can fool Peg and the kids, I've got nothing to worry about.
17:33Unless Junior decides to give Butch a bath and washes the stuff off.
17:37Junior don't even believe in washing his own face.
17:39Why should he wash the dogs?
17:41I'll see you later, goodness.
17:42Okay, Rob.
17:43Good luck.
17:43Yeah, thanks.
17:47Pat, I found him.
17:49You found him, old Max.
17:50Oh, I'm so glad.
17:51You know, Riley, I formed quite an attachment for Max.
17:55But look.
17:56He even seems to be more affectionate toward me.
17:59Peg, there's something I've got to tell you.
18:02Dad, you have to take him back to Mr. Cunningham.
18:05Now look, Babsy.
18:06Don't take him back, Pat.
18:07Oh, he seems to crave affection.
18:10Maybe if Mr. Cunningham knew how happy Max was to be with us, he might let him stay.
18:20You see, he loves you.
18:22Cut that out.
18:23She's one of the family, Pa.
18:25I know that as well as you do, Junior.
18:27But as long as he's not a blood relative, he's got to go back.
18:31Oh, Max.
18:44Maximilian.
18:45He must have run away while Mr. Riley was talking on the phone with you.
18:49Good boy.
18:51Shall I call Mr. Riley and tell him that we have the Baron?
18:53No, don't bother.
18:55I'll tell him tomorrow when I get to the factory.
18:58Run along now, Max.
18:59Roger, you go to the car and bring me in those blueprints.
19:03I'll be in the den.
19:04Very good, sir.
19:06You don't have to all look at me like that.
19:08I feel as bad as you do.
19:12You might as well get it over with.
19:15Goodbye, Max.
19:17Just go on, Bill.
19:20I've got such a big lump in my head, I can't even swallow it.
19:25Come on, boy.
19:29How did you get it?
19:33Well, I don't know what you're talking about.
19:34Is it Cunningham here?
19:36Well, yes.
19:37But perhaps you'd better wait in the living room.
19:39I'll tell Mr. Cunningham you're here.
19:41I think you'll be happier here, Butch.
19:56Hey, that's a pretty neat trick.
20:05Do that again.
20:06Hello, Mr. Cunningham.
20:15Brought your dog back, Mr. Cunningham.
20:18What dog?
20:19Why, the...
20:20For a minute there, I thought Butch was a ventriloquist.
20:32This is Butch.
20:33This is Mr. Cunningham.
20:35And that's Max.
20:37There's two...
20:38Well, I guess I'll be going.
20:43Just a minute, Riley.
20:44Oh, am I in trouble?
20:50No, Butch ain't gonna dig under the fence and get away like Max did.
20:53He ain't got a chance, Gillis.
20:54This time I used my head.
20:56Well, what do you mean, dear?
20:58As soon as I got home, I put in another fence.
21:00Another fence?
21:01I put it right under this one.
21:03Five feet straight down.
21:08Call me over when you're painted.
21:09I'll help you.
