00:00My dad found out he has a half-brother, and his dad is still alive living in Texas.
00:06My dad was born January 1970. He was told since birth that his father had been born.
00:11He decided, you know what, let's try Ancestry.com. I'd love to learn about my lineage,
00:15thinking maybe he might find family. This was his first match.
00:20They quickly arranged to meet their new family, but a harsh truth came with it.
00:23So meeting with new white uncle was just as cute as it was in that video.
00:34It was such a good time. We got to know his partner. They were just
00:38such a sweet family. Like, I feel like we got so lucky.
00:42It wasn't all positive, though. Over their first family meal,
00:45the gory details of their family connection came to life.
00:47He has a koi fish. Oh my gosh. And he has a dragon.
00:52So we find out from our white uncle that his father, my dad's dad, contracted malaria during
00:59the war. And my grandma, assuming, well, if you're getting malaria, you're a goner in Vietnam,
01:04he was sent to the hospital. And then the army sent him back home to the U.S., where he got treatment,
01:13got better, and then had a second son in December 1971.
01:19Now he knows his dad is alive. Will her father try and reconnect with his long-lost dad?
01:24The big question now is, what about dad? So new white uncle, respectfully so, thought,
01:31let's just get a second opinion. So we went through a third party and did a DNA test for siblings.
01:37It came back with a 99.9% match that they are brothers.
01:42However, his new father doesn't believe things are adding up.
01:45So the issue now is in the timeline of things, okay?
01:49So my dad, he goes by Kevin because, like all good Asians, he adopted an American name to not make other Americans feel uncomfortable.
01:58His documents state that he was born January 1971.
02:02Well, new white grandpa is reluctant about the news because, and yes, obviously they're brothers.
02:12They look, come on, they're like doppelgangers of each other, okay?
02:17And two, DNA doesn't lie.
02:19But three, the timeline doesn't actually add up for when he was in Vietnam and my dad's birth in January 1971.
02:28So I tell my dad that. I'm like, hey, your dad is saying that it just doesn't make sense.
02:34The timeline just doesn't add up for you being born in January.
02:38And he said, oh, that's not my real birthday.
02:42So now we have to figure out my dad's actual birthday, okay?
02:45And then see if that fits in the timeline of when new white grandpa was in Vietnam.
02:50So fake birthdays for immigrants is actually very, very, very common.
02:55So we're still trying to figure out the real birthday.
02:57So I'm working on that and I will get back to you guys as soon as I get more information, okay?
