00:30Hello, everybody. It's Monday afternoon. Countdown back on your screens for another five days. An absolute delight to be here and thank you so much for tuning in. Welcome back, Rachel Riley. Hi, Rich. Hi, Cole.
00:43I told you about this before where people's first names have special days and today's mine. It's National Colin Day. Rule number one, you have to be nice. You have to treat anybody called Colin very special today.
00:58So if your name's Colin, make sure you get your dinner made for you. Maybe you'll get a bath run. Maybe a little surprise present as well. National Colin Day.
01:08I love that you don't like Christmas presents. You don't really do birthdays, but you really, really want to get involved in National Colin Day.
01:13You've got the double R, which I like, Rachel Riley. I like that. It's got a bit of showbiz to it. I'd love to change my name.
01:20You're going to go back. It was a direction, wasn't it? Was it Luke North?
01:23Luke Wright.
01:24Luke Wright.
01:25Yeah, it was my original name.
01:26Brilliant.
01:26Yeah, yeah. I'm thinking, I was thinking of Colt. Maybe Colt is a good name, isn't it?
01:31Maybe the artist formerly known as Colin.
01:32Yes.
01:33You want to name yourself Colt?
01:34Colt, for the double letter, like you. You know, Rachel Riley.
01:38Oh.
01:38Murdoch Murray.
01:40Oh, Murdoch.
01:40What do you think? Yeah.
01:42Really?
01:42That's nice, isn't it?
01:43I think you should open it up to Susie and me and we'll come up with something at the end of the show.
01:47And the last two people I'd trust to rename me would be you and Susie.
01:50Right, happy day. So let's head to Dictionary Corner. There's no National Susie Day. There isn't a National Susie Day.
01:56I bet there is.
01:57Oh, randomly, no. There's Rachel, there's Colin, there's not Susie, but every day is Susie Day here.
02:01Start a petition.
02:02Yeah. Susie Dent. And we have a new name in Dictionary Corner today. So excited. Where to start?
02:08Model, fashion expert, podcaster, reality TV star, author, ambassador and a million other things.
02:15Tasha Gurrie is with us. Hi, Tasha.
02:17Aw, that was a really nice intro. Thank you.
02:21Yeah, I mean, I left about 20 things out, but we'll get to it this week. It's so nice to have you here and we're getting to know Dave Tinkler.
02:28He's only won one so far, so he's our new champion. He beat Mick Jennings on Friday. Our network engineer. Loves his horse racing.
02:36How are you, mate?
02:37Yeah, good. Thanks, Colin.
02:38Good, yeah, good. So you love horse racing. You're also a status quo disciple, I believe.
02:44Yeah, that's right.
02:45What is it about the quo?
02:46People see them, oh, a great evening out and simple music.
02:51That's exactly it, isn't it?
02:53Not overcomplicated.
02:53Right, they had that album called In Search of the Fourth Chord, which made me laugh a lot.
02:58They never found.
02:58The three chords and the truth, isn't it?
03:00Right, well, keep it simple today. Don't overcomplicate it. 15 rounds of letters and numbers.
03:04I'm hoping to send you home as James Hussey, who's from Drockoda in Ireland. How are you, mate?
03:10Great, thanks, Colin.
03:11Good. Nice to have you here. Management consultant. But you used to work in suiting and tailoring.
03:19That's right.
03:20So build this up a bit. So he turns up for his first day. You're a bit nervous, right?
03:24Very nervous.
03:25Who's going to be my first person? Who am I going to have to make a suit for? Tell me about that.
03:28And told specifically on my first day not to talk to any, you know, VIPs or a celebrity walks in.
03:36Make sure you have someone kind of supervising you to make sure you don't make a fool of yourself.
03:40And Nick Hewer came over and looked for a shirt and tie.
03:45And my manager was behind me like, don't say anything wrong. And he was okay. He got what he wanted.
03:52That's what I was told when I was in Dixery Corner as well. Don't talk to Nick. Don't look him in the eye.
03:56I love that. Or Nick. Dropping by. It's a small world, isn't it?
03:59Good luck to James and Dave.
04:03Mr Tinkler, off you go.
04:05Hi. Hi, Rachel.
04:07Hi, Dave.
04:07Could I have a consonant, please?
04:08Indeed. Start the week with C.
04:11Another.
04:12T.
04:14A vowel, please.
04:15A.
04:17Another.
04:18O.
04:19A third vowel, please.
04:21E.
04:22And a fourth.
04:24O.
04:24A consonant.
04:26P.
04:28Another consonant.
04:30D.
04:31And a final consonant, please.
04:33A final T.
04:35At home and in the studio, let's play Coyntown.
04:37Coyntown.
04:45Dave, pen down Dave, don't you make me, if I have to come over there Dave, what you get?
05:15How many? Seven, thank you, you'll have none of that. James?
05:18Just a six. A six for you, what have you got?
05:20Potted. And what's a seven? Co-opted.
05:23Co-opted, no hyphens? That's the big question.
05:28Oh, it does have a hyphen, it's there for legibility really, otherwise you'd have co-opted, but very good try.
05:36I just felt, Susie and Tasha, there was just a lot of sixes there.
05:39We could go one better. Wow. I've got a seven, and it's octoped.
05:44Oh, what's that? Yep, an octoped, eight-footed animal or thing.
05:48Right, like an octopus, or, I'm trying to think of anything else.
05:51Yes, me too. Scorpions? Look at that, scorpions?
05:54Scorpions, mites, ticks apparently. There you go.
05:57Eight legs. What a, every day's a school day, innit?
06:00We make learning fun. More letters. James?
06:04Hi, Rachel. Hi, James. Let's start with a consonant, please.
06:06Start with C. And another.
06:09L. And another.
06:12M. And a vowel, please.
06:15E. And another.
06:18A. And a consonant.
06:21P. And another.
06:24G. And a vowel.
06:28I. And finish with a consonant, please.
06:32Finish with R.
06:34On 30 seconds.
06:35F. And an vowel.
06:48Hi.
06:56And all that.
06:58All right, time's up, James.
07:09Seven, Colin.
07:10Seven from you.
07:10And Dave?
07:11Just a five.
07:12Just a five, Dave.
07:13What did you get clear?
07:15And the seven, James?
07:16Miracle.
07:17A miracle!
07:18I believe in miracles.
07:20Very nice.
07:20Excellent.
07:21Anything else for me?
07:22We've got Glacier, which is seven.
07:24Two sevens.
07:26And Clamper.
07:26Yeah, things you need to avoid.
07:29The Clamper for seven.
07:30Right, thank you very much.
07:32It's 13-0 to our challenger.
07:34What a start to the show, Dave.
07:36A bit of catching up to do your numbers.
07:38Can I have four large, please, Rachel?
07:39You can indeed.
07:40Your favourite pick.
07:41Four large, two little.
07:42First numbers of the week are five and four.
07:46And the big four, 25, 75, 150.
07:51And the target to reach 454.
07:54Four, five, four.
07:55Numbers up.
07:56Six, two.
08:09One in the podcast.
08:10Two and one in the podcast.

08:26I'm up, pens down. Dave?
08:284-5-5. One away, James?
08:314-5-4, I think. Off you go.
08:34So, let's start by 5 by 100.
08:37Yeah, I think Dave might be kicking himself at this stage.
08:39Minus the 50. 450. And add the 4.
08:424-5-4, OK. Nice.
08:47Well, there you go, our challenger is off to a roaring start.
08:5023 points up, but we know what Dave's capable of.
08:52So, let's see what happens when we come back after this tea-time teaser.
08:55Which is Rue, as in Rue the day.
08:58Rue lying, spelled L-Y-I-N-G.
09:02Rue lying.
09:04Forget about kiss and make-up, think about kiss in make-up.
09:09Forget about kiss and make-up, think about kiss in make-up.
09:25I think I first heard that, maybe early 90s, I think, sort of coming out of school, the cure, and people wearing eyeliner.
09:32Yeah.
09:33Some of the mates took to the eyeliner.
09:34A bit later than we think, so it went in the dictionary early 21st century.
09:35Really?
09:36When it was first recorded.
09:37But, you know, it might have been around in speech before then.
09:38I think it would have been that goth era, probably, sort of where we started using the word, maybe.
09:43Excellent, love that.
09:44Right, let's get back to the game you're choosing, James.
09:45Can I start with a consonant, please, Rachel?
09:46Thank you, James.
09:47T.
09:48And another.
09:49R.

09:58And a vowel, please.
09:59And another.
10:00And a consonant.
10:02Let's get back to the game you're choosing, James.

10:53Nothing else matters.
10:54Six points for you.
10:55It gets you under way.
10:56As we head to dictionary corner, what did you spot?
10:57Seven.
10:58We've got Lambert.
10:59Yes.
11:00Lambert.
11:01You won't probably have heard of this one.
11:02Because it was an old unit of illumination, of luminance.
11:05The emission and reflection of one lumen per square centimetre.
11:06So it was an old unit of illumination and the emission of reflection of one lumen per square
11:07centimetre.
11:08And, you know, it's just an old unit of illumination, of luminance.
11:10Excellent, we'll get you on the board here.
11:11James?
11:12Matter.
11:12And Dave?

11:31the emission of reflection of one lumen per square centimetre,
11:35named after Johann Lambert.
11:38Excellent work.
11:39Right, let's get more letters, and Dave, you're up.
11:41Yeah, could I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
11:44Thank you, Dave.

11:46And another.

11:55And a third.
11:57I.
11:58And a fourth, please.
12:00O.
12:02A consonant.
12:04G.
12:05Another consonant.
12:07T.
12:07And a final consonant, please.
12:10A final P.
12:11And half a minute.
12:12A consonant.
12:13A consonant.
12:14A consonant.

12:45A six for you and James.
12:47A six.
12:47A six as well.
12:49What have we got, Mr Tinkler?
12:50A poking.
12:51Mr Hussey?
12:51I'm the same.
12:52Poking and poking, so we match each other again.
12:55Same word, six points each.
12:57That's been the story of this part so far.
12:59Can we get the seven or above?
13:01We were just on sixes.
13:02No.
13:03Pidgin and Ignite.
13:04And that's it?
13:05Yeah.
13:05Right, all right.
13:06Well, nothing else to see here.
13:08Let's get our second numbers round.
13:09James, you're choosing this time.
13:10Can I go for one large, please?
13:12You can indeed, just one from the top this time.
13:14And five from the rest of them.
13:16And the little ones are seven, ten, five, two, and four.
13:23And the large one, 50.
13:24And the target, 698.
13:28Six, nine, eight.
13:29Numbers up.
13:29One, two, and three.
13:31이야기 Fromlogue-
13:44The talking game.
13:48Indeed?
13:48And that's time, James Hossie.
14:02Yep, 698.
14:03Yeah, and Dave?
14:05698, not fully written down.
14:06Not fully written down. You'll have to go first then, Dave.
14:08OK, 2 times 7.
14:1114.
14:12Times 50.
14:13700.
14:15And then 4 times 5.
14:1720.
14:18Divided by 10 is the 2, and take it off.
14:21Lovely.
14:22James?
14:23Yeah, I said 10 plus 4 is 14, multiplied by the 50.
14:27700.
14:28And minus the 2.
14:29Well done. Same result.
14:30Well done.
14:33Only 522.
14:35As we have our first chat of the week with Tasha Goury, I mean, where'd I start?
14:39I feel like we should start by chatting about Love Island,
14:42because that's where people got to know you for the first time.
14:44Of course, yeah.
14:45Although there's so much more that we could talk about.
14:47But it's a weird thing to apply to go on.
14:49I mean that in a nice way, right?
14:51Because, first of all, someone that looks like me ain't going on it.
14:54But what was your motivation for applying?
14:56I think for me, it was just kind of, you know what, once-a-lifetime opportunity.
15:01And for me, I wanted to go on for representation for the deaf community.
15:03And I did want to find someone, you know.
15:05So, I never really had that part.
15:07And I once-a-lifetime snuggled up to you.
15:09And, well, I got someone out of it.
15:10So, it's a bonus.
15:12So, right, let's break that into compartments.
15:14I know, I'm such a...
15:15So, first of all, the representation.
15:19I think of, I suppose, Strictly Come Dancing as an example of where we got to see somebody who was deaf compete so beautifully in that.
15:32And that really did break so many boundaries.
15:35It was really special.
15:37And similar, I mean, and Love Island is a younger audience as well.
15:40So, you were hitting younger people as well, which is great, I suppose, educating people.
15:45Exactly.
15:46I kind of wanted to go on and show that you can be who you want to be.
15:49You can find love.
15:50You can be confident.
15:51And especially a dating show, I did not think they'd have someone with a cochlear implant on there.
15:55And I thought, you know, break down the boundaries, like you said, and just show people that you can do things that you want to do.
16:01So, that's what I wanted to prove.
16:03So, what about this?
16:04Obviously, this guy, he's batting way above his average, by the way.
16:07He's very lucky indeed.
16:08But it is weird, because in that sort of fake environment, if you know what I mean, of TV, to find someone, actually, that you are.
16:16You even have a dog.
16:17I mean, this is serious.
16:18It's crazy.
16:18He's living in Dubai.
16:19I've never met the guy before.
16:21And in the middle of nowhere, in the filler.
16:23Like, it's so weird when you think about it.
16:25It's like a Sims world kind of vibe.
16:27That's what I felt like.
16:28I felt like someone's playing a game.
16:29I was like a little Sim that was just in there playing.
16:31But it's amazing that I found Andrew out of it.
16:33And we're still together this day and living life.
16:36So, loving it.
16:37Well, listen, he'll do for now, at least.
16:38And the dog's yours.
16:39Just let's make that clear on national television.
16:42Well, that's brilliant.
16:43Listen, we'll get to know you all this week.
16:44Will you tell me about the implant tomorrow?
16:46Yeah.
16:46Because I'd like to learn about how it actually works in reality.
16:49Like, actually using it.
16:51How it changed your life and all that.
16:52I'd love to find out about that tomorrow.
16:54Absolutely.
16:55I'll tell you everything about it.
16:56Brilliant.
16:56You're doing very well so far.
16:57Countdown.
16:58Thank you very much.
16:59Right, let's get back to the game.
17:05Dave, if you want to come back tomorrow, you're going to have to shift a bit.
17:07Let's go.
17:08Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
17:10Thank you, Dave.
17:11D.
17:12And another.
17:12And a final consonant, please.
17:34And a final N.
17:36And here we go again.
17:42All right, Dave.
18:10Just a five.
18:11Just a five.
18:11Yeah, weird old letters, James.
18:13Six.
18:14Six for you.
18:15The five, Dave?
18:16Dandy.
18:17And the six, James?
18:18Denude.
18:19Denude.
18:20Yeah, very good.
18:20I hadn't seen that one.
18:21Yep, to strip something of, or strip someone of their possessions, that kind of thing.
18:26What else have we got?
18:27So we had another six, undead.
18:29Yeah, I mean, six, honestly, was tops, I think, out of that one.
18:32All right, excellent.
18:33Let's get on with it, then.
18:34Let's get better letters from James.
18:35Can I start with a consonant, please, Rachel?
18:37Thank you, James.
18:39S.
18:39And another.
18:41And a vowel, please.
18:49And another.
18:51And a consonant.
18:55And another.
19:00And a vowel.
19:00A.
19:03And finish with a consonant, please.
19:05Finish with T.
19:07And start the clock.
19:08And a vowel.
19:09And a vowel.
19:10And a vowel.

19:43Just a five.
19:44Just a five.
19:45What have you got, Dave?
19:46Fares.
19:47And James?
19:48Faster.
19:49Yeah, faster.
19:51And again, struggling to go beyond that.
19:53Did you manage anything?
19:54Yeah, we've got seven, right?
19:56Yes.
19:56Yeah, so matures.
19:58Matures.
19:59Very good.
19:59If you got that at home, you managed to beat James.
20:01And Dave, if you're keeping the three scores, as I know many people do.
20:04Right, ten more points in the numbers.
20:07They've been eventful so far, Dave.
20:09You're choosing.
20:10Can I have four large, please, Rachel?
20:11Back to the four large.
20:13An attempt to claw back some points.
20:14Let's see if it's going to work.
20:15The two little ones for this game are seven and five.
20:19And the big ones, 75, 25, 100 and 50.
20:25And the target, 978.
20:28978.
20:28Numbers up.
20:379-7-8.
21:01Dave?
21:029-7-5.
21:03Yeah, three away.
21:05And James?
21:059-7-5.
21:06Same again.
21:07All right, Dave, off you go.
21:0950 over 25 is two.
21:1150 over 25, two.
21:14Plus a seven.
21:15Nine.
21:17Times the hundred.
21:18900.
21:19And add to 75.
21:209-7-5, three away.
21:22And James?
21:23I said the hundred plus 50.
21:27Multiply by the seven.
21:28150 is 1,050.
21:30And take away the 75.
21:32Yeah.
21:33Same result.
21:35What about 9-7-8, Rachel?
21:37Erm, you're going to have to leave it with me for a minute.
21:40Right.
21:40That's intriguing.
21:419-7-8.
21:43We'll get to the bottom of it at some stage.
21:45But let's get our second tea time teaser of the day,
21:48which is unnoticed.
21:50Unnoticed.
21:51You failed to notice your mistake and carry on regardless.
21:53You failed to notice your mistake and carry on regardless.
21:56Welcome back.
22:14Now, the tea time teaser was you fail to notice your mistake and carry on regardless.
22:19Unnoticed becomes continue.
22:20That's exactly what we're not going to do.
22:22Although we can't find out what our mistake is because we still can't get 9-7-8.
22:27But you've spotted it, Rachel.
22:28I continued.
22:29And if you say 100 times 50 is...
22:34Yeah, one of those.
22:355,000.
22:37Take away 75 for 4,925.
22:41Divide that by 5 and you get 985 and you have a 7 left over.
22:46Yay.
22:46Very good.
22:47Love it.
22:50I am never going to do that.
22:5264 plays 29.
22:54So a healthy lead for a challenger but still six rounds left.
22:57So let's see how it goes.
22:58James Hossie, you're in the driving seat.
23:00You're picking the letters.
23:02Can I start with a consonant, please, Rachel?
23:03Thank you, James.
23:04L.
23:05And another.
23:07S.
23:08And another.
23:10D.
23:11And a vowel.
23:13U.
23:14And another.
23:15A.
23:17And a consonant.
23:19N.
23:20And another.
23:22C.
23:23And a vowel.
23:25E.
23:27And a final consonant, please.
23:29Final S.
23:31OK, let's take another trip.
23:32Yeah.
23:55Bye.
23:56That's all the time we have, James.
24:05A six.
24:05Six from you.
24:06And Dave?
24:07A six.
24:08A six as well.
24:09What have you got, James?
24:11A lances.
24:12Lances.
24:13And Dave?
24:13A dances.
24:14And dances.
24:15All right, over to the dictionary corner.
24:17I've got nine.
24:18You've got a nine?
24:19Oh, no.
24:19I was happy with my seven.
24:21You've got a nine.
24:22What is it, Tasha?
24:23It is unclassed.
24:25It is unclassed.
24:30It's a very dull thing, but the only time I ever have heard that used is when a carriage on a train is unclassed.
24:37Oh.
24:38That's all I can think about.
24:39I was thinking that if you enter a fruit and veg competition, you know, like a sort of food makes a bad thing, and it's so bad, it's unclassed.
24:47That's what I was thinking.
24:48Do you enter many veg competitions?
24:51No.
24:52Funnily enough.
24:53I didn't think so.
24:54Dave?
24:55Let's move on.
24:56Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
24:58Thank you, Dave.
24:59T.
25:00And another.
25:02S.
25:03A vowel, please.
25:05O.
25:05And another.
25:07E.
25:08And another.
25:09U.
25:11And another.
25:13O.
25:14A consonant, please.
25:16T.
25:18A consonant.
25:20S.
25:20And a final consonant, please.
25:22And a final B.
25:24Let's play.
25:24Be quite.
25:38Nowhere's next.
25:38I'll do this, Dave.
25:57Er, seven.
25:58You've got to go for it, James.
26:00Try a seven as well.
26:01You're going to have to now.
26:03Right, Dave, what do you got?
26:04Er, out boss.
26:05Er, James.
26:06Outsets?
26:07Outsets seems a safer bet, Susie.
26:10Outsets is absolutely brilliant in the dictionary.
26:12I love the idea of out bossing someone,
26:14but sadly that's not him.
26:16And that's it?
26:16Yeah, that is it, I'm afraid.
26:18We had otherwise sixes.
26:20All right, there you go.
26:21Big seven points for James there.
26:2477 for Challenger.
26:2635 for Dave with four rounds left
26:28as we get our first Origins of Words of the Week.
26:32Talk to me, Susie.
26:32What are we doing today?
26:33OK, I learnt something really fun the other day
26:37and this is why I love reading the dictionary video
26:39because I'm always discovering something new.
26:41I didn't know that Languedoc, which is the form of French,
26:44it's kind of medieval French that's spoken south of the Loire in France,
26:48that it means the language of yes
26:50because oc is what they use for oui
26:53in that, you know, in that section of France,
26:56which I absolutely love.
26:58So the language of yes, I think, is great
27:00and I thought, what other ways do we have to say yes?
27:03So I'm going to give you a few and where they come from.
27:06So if you want to say yes, everything's perfect,
27:08you might say that it's hunky-dory,
27:11which is a bit of a strange one,
27:13began in the US in the 19th century.
27:15Now, in Dutch, there's a word hunk, H-O-N-K,
27:18which means home.
27:20So if you were playing a game of tag
27:21and you wanted to say, I'm home, I'm safe,
27:23you would use that particular word.
27:25And so if you're home, you're in a good position,
27:27maybe everything's hunky-dory there.
27:29But there's another theory that links it
27:31with 19th century sailors' slang
27:34who remembered, it is said,
27:37a Japanese city of Yokohama,
27:39which was a district there called Honcho-dory.
27:42And let's just say it was full of sources of amusement for them.
27:46And so it's possible that they then associated it
27:48with comfort when they were on shore.
27:51So everything is hunky-dory.
27:53OK, that's probably the universal way
27:55of saying everything is fine.
27:56First recorded use in 1839,
27:59so not as modern as we think.
28:00And it actually began as an abbreviation of all correct,
28:05which was spelt O-R-L and then K-O-R-R-E-K-T.
28:09So whenever we think, oh, text abbreviations are so new,
28:12well, no, they actually go back a very long way.
28:14And then it was given a real bit of oomph
28:17by a political campaign by a democratic leader
28:20called Martin Van Buren in the 1840s, mid-19th century,
28:24because he came from a place called Old Kinderhook,
28:27from Kinderhook, which is in New York State.
28:30So he became Old Kinderhook,
28:31and that was abbreviated in his campaign to OK.
28:34So that gave its momentum.
28:37And finally, the Ouija board.
28:40So maybe not something that we should experiment with, obviously.
28:45Used by spiritualists for receiving spirit messages.
28:47But actually, the word is a combination of the French,
28:51oui, and the German, ja.
28:53So it both mean yes.
28:55So it is yes, yes.
28:57And that is because when the fingers of the communicators
29:00are placed on the Ouija board,
29:02it moves from letter to letter
29:03and possibly spells out things like yes.
29:05So that was another revelation for me.
29:06Thank you very much.
29:07You're welcome.
29:10Well, it's looking OK for James,
29:12as it stands at the moment.
29:13Four rounds left.
29:14Could be handing out another teapot.
29:17Could bankrupt us soon.
29:18Off you go, James.
29:19More letters.
29:19Can I start with a consonant, please, Rachel?
29:21Thank you, James.
