The Way We Live – A Candle For Judith 1971 (UK, Psychedelic, Hard Rock)
In 1966, one of the many beat groups of the time, "The Way We Live," was formed in a school in the English town of Rochdale (Lancashire). The group was founded by Jim Milne (guitar, vocals) and Steve Clayton (drums), joined by Michael "Slim" Batsch (bass) and Alan Burgess (vocals). After some time, Burgess disappeared, and a little later, Batsch also departed for an unknown location. Meanwhile, Jim and Steve connected with John Brierley, who was interested in electronics and built recording equipment in his bedroom. The resulting trio devoted much time to studio work and various sound experiments. These efforts resulted in the release of a demo tape with several "psychedelic" tracks. The demo was sent to one of the founders of the London label Dandelion Records, BBC Radio One DJ John Peel. Literally the next morning, Dandelion representative Clive Selwood was standing at the door of the group's house. He was so impressed by the tape that he took the first train from London to Rochdale in hopes of catching the guys home before they scattered. Soon, a contract with the musicians was in his briefcase. When Milne and Clayton arrived in London, the label asked them to re-record the material and decide on a band name and album title. They kept the band's name, "The Way We Live," and titled the album "A Candle For Judith," after Steve's girlfriend and future wife. The musicians were given the use of Back Street Studio (the same one where Cream recorded their first album), and they finished the work in a couple of days. In January 1971, the album was released to rave reviews in the press.
