00:00Malaysia Airport's Holdings Berhad said the water leakage in KLIA Terminal 1 yesterday
00:09was due to an error by a contractor that had been carrying out roof restoration work at the airport.
00:16The airport operator said the contractor was carrying out the work to address aging infrastructure
00:22when there was a thunderstorm and lightning activity intensified.
00:26In a statement, MAHB said that in line with safety protocols, work was immediately suspended
00:33and the team evacuated the rooftop, but the contractor failed to remove the plywood covering
00:38the drainage points for safety, leaving one of the roof drainage systems obstructed.
00:45It added that the blocked drainage prevented water from flowing off the roof as designed,
00:50and this resulted in large volumes of water accumulating on the rooftop, which subsequently
00:56leaked through the terminal ceiling into the departure hall.
01:00The company said the roofing work was part of a year-long project that commenced last April
01:05to restore and waterproof the main terminal roof as part of its broader infrastructure renewal program.
01:11The leak is the latest in a series of operational issues at KLIA, including aero train breakdowns
01:19and power outages.
