00:00Dailene seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth.
00:09We love Dailene so much, and we want her home.
00:12Carlson was last seen leaving a bar, then shopping at a grocery store.
00:16At the bar, one of the men put his arm around Dailene, and Dailene brushes him off.
00:22We basically have a bar full of possible suspects.
00:27He told us that he went home by himself, and that he is seen on video buying a bottle of alcohol with Dailene.
00:34He is the last person to see her. That's all we have at this moment.
00:37We wanted to know where Dailene was. That was at the root of it all. Where is she?
00:47Every suspect accused of a crime has the right to remain silent.
00:51Many agree to be interrogated anyway, but they can stop the interview at any moment, making it a race against time.
00:59Justice hangs in the balance.
01:03The missing person report comes in for Dailene Carlson.
01:22The original report was by her aunt that she went to this bar and did not come home.
01:28Dailene decided that she was going to go to a local bar called Finnegan's, and she had plans to meet some friends there.
01:40Dailene's aunt and her cousin heard from her a little bit through the night.
01:44Her plan was to come home, and then Dailene never showed up.
01:48My understanding is that Dailene communicated with her family very consistently, and if Dailene said,
01:58Hey, I'm going to be home, then she would come home.
02:00So the fact that she had not communicated with those folks at all, that was extremely alarming.
02:07Dailene Carlson was full of life and energy.
02:19She was from Sandpoint, Idaho, loved to explore, kind of a free spirit.
02:25She traveled the United States with a magazine crew from city to city, trying to get subscriptions for a variety of magazines.
02:34So she was a person that was, I think, looking for her way in the world, but definitely enjoying her life.
02:42When Dailene Carlson moved to Stockton, she moved in with her aunt and her cousin.
02:49And she decided she liked the community so much that she wanted to stay, and she wanted to go to college here.
02:54Dailene had never gone missing in the past.
02:57So the fact that she seemingly just disappeared off the face of the earth, it did seem exceptionally unusual.
03:05If they know anything, it doesn't matter how little it is, that if they would please come forward, contact the police department.
03:15She's a very quiet person, but once you get to know her, she's just bubbly, and she just wouldn't hurt anybody or anything.
03:22We love Dailene so much, and we want her home.
03:26Her cousin said that Dailene had recently broken up with a boyfriend, Jacob Evangelisti.
03:49I think Jacob had had some feelings about that.
03:52He wanted to remain in a relationship with Dailene, and Dailene did not.
03:57Part of the same kind of social network was Jason Gilley.
04:01Dailene and Jason were just friends, and Jason's home was kind of the party place.
04:07We learned that these young men were at the bar.
04:11Jason was there, and Jacob was there.
04:13And given the circumstances, that certainly caught our attention.
04:18So we want to talk to the ex-boyfriend, Jacob, because he has a reason to want to maybe get back with her, or maybe he's upset.
04:31Jacob was very willing to talk to us, and Jacob insisted that he knew nothing about Dailene's disappearance, and that he was more concerned for her than anybody was.
04:55And he seemed to be very transparent and very honest.
04:59And the sense was that he was telling us the truth.
05:02Jason told us that he was at the bar, and that he saw Dailene there, and that the two did hang out, and that they were being friendly.
05:30And as the night went on, he got a text or a call from his grandmother, who relayed that Jason's son was sick, and that Jason needed to come home.
05:41So, according to Jason, he went to the car, and he left by himself, and went straight home to take care of his son who was ill.
05:49Jason told us that when he left, Dailene was still partying at the bar, and he had no idea what her plans were from that point on, because he went straight home, and didn't see Dailene again.
06:01So, there was one camera angle in the hall near the restrooms, and in that particular angle, you're able to see that Dailene is kind of milling about with a group of men.
06:24And at one point, you see one of the men put his arm around Dailene, and Dailene kind of brushes him off and steps away.
06:36And when that person who tried to kind of bring Dailene in for a hug turns around, we're able to see that it's Jason Gilley.
06:43So, watching the video and really dissecting it in all the different angles, what we saw was at the very end of the night, Jason left at 12 minutes after 1 a.m.
06:56and walked out of view of the camera, and then Dailene left three minutes later, also right out of view of the camera.
07:03They left not necessarily right together, but in very close proximity in time.
07:10By way of text message, we learned that Dailene's plan was to leave the bar with Jason, and then go to the store and get a bottle of Jägermeister,
07:38and continue the party at Jason's house. Jason said that he was not with Dailene.
07:44So, of course, the text messages caused more questions for us than we had answers to at that time.
07:50Because we had the information that they were reportedly going to go pick up a bottle of Jägermeister, we just looked at what a logical route would be from the bar to Jason's home.
08:02You know, what liquor stores were along that route. And so we visited several of those type of locations, which ultimately led us to a local grocery store that did sell alcohol at that hour.
08:13And through that visit, we were able to obtain surveillance footage of a couple of young folks buying a bottle of alcohol. And the surveillance footage was not great.
08:27But when the two went to the register, ultimately, we ended up identifying Jason and Dailene.
08:40We knew that Jason was not telling us the truth simply because he told us that he went home by himself. And that he is seen on video buying a bottle of alcohol with Dailene.
08:52Okay, Jason's lying to us. Why is Jason lying to us? That's the question.
09:11Jason was not present. He actually was out of town. So we spoke with his grandmother.
09:17And we specifically asked if she told Jason that he needed to come home because Jason's son was sick.
09:23And his grandmother looked at us in a kind of a puzzled way and said, no, I don't. I never did that. I don't know what you're talking about.
09:33During the search warrant at Jason's home, there were several key pieces of evidence that were located.
09:40First and foremost, we found women's underwear in Jason's bedroom, which were obviously out of place.
09:46And we also found a certain amount of marijuana in Jason's home, enough to build a case. He possessed it for sale.
09:53It was ultra clear that Jason was not being honest and that we now had enough, at least based on the possession of marijuana, to take him into custody on that and have a very direct conversation with him.
10:07So, on August 14th, Jason was located and he was arrested and was immediately taken into custody.
10:14Sorry about the wait, man. I don't know.
10:15You're unlike you. You're like, we keep saying we've got so much stuff. It's crazy.
10:21Well, we appreciate your cooperation, by the way. I don't know how I said that. It really helps. I mean, you know, we really, I understand it's all procedures.
10:36Yeah, no, we appreciate it. I mean, all you're doing is helping us. I wasn't upset about my room upside down.
10:55So, we're not worried about weed or whatever. I'm just curious, to be honest with you. What is a little sack like that? What does it cost?
11:01I've been getting $10 for one of them.
11:0310 per?
11:04Yeah. I'm not really trying to make money off of it.
11:06Just kind of smoke for three kind of thing?
11:08Yeah, pretty much.
11:09Okay, so now going back to Saturday.
11:11Saturday, it was a long boring day. I think I did some yard work. I can't quite remember.
11:19You went to the bar at what time?
11:21I would say, again, 9 or 10-ish. It's about the time I show up.
11:27I wanted Jason to lock himself into a statement. If the statement was going to be absolutely the truth, that would be great. If he chose to continue to stick to his story and tell us more lies, we were going to let him do just that.
11:38I do remember playing beer pong, drinking some beer. I've seen her bailing there, and I've seen her, like I said, bouncing. I told you before, she was bouncing around.
11:53About, I would say, a little bit before one, my grandma texted me, said, hey, are you busy? Can you come home and take care of your son?
12:04I'm like, all right, I will.
12:06And then, where do you go?
12:07The thing that we want most is a full confession. A very close second to that is a statement that's riddled with lies.
12:21And in that interview room, Jason continued to lie.
12:24We just want our home safe. I just want my family to, you know, have peace and my aunt get her daughter home.
12:49Everybody has their own kind of nuances as to how they speak, how they act. And I was just kind of getting a read on who Jason is and how he would generally communicate.
12:53Everybody has their own kind of nuances as to how they speak, how they act. And I was just kind of getting a read on who Jason is and how he would generally communicate so that we could then identify behavior changes from the body.
12:57And that's really what we're looking for. And that's really what we're looking for is what that behavior change is.
13:02So what do you think about all this stuff and everything that's funny?
13:07Honestly, I don't even know. I know it's not good.
13:13It's sad and I don't really have no thoughts on it.
13:15What do you think about all this stuff and everything that's floating around?
13:17Honestly, I don't even know. I know it's not good. It's sad and I don't really have no thoughts on it.
13:23What do you think happened?
13:24I'm thinking she left with somebody and hopefully she just stuck somewhere and hopefully she's all right.
13:33I don't have no idea what happened. I have no idea what happened.
13:42Have you tried since you found out she went missing, have you helped out to try to find her to do anything?
13:47I was going to print out some pliers, but my printer, I don't know.
13:52And I don't know what happened. I don't know.
13:55I don't know.
13:56I don't know.
13:57I don't know.
13:58I don't know.
13:59I don't know.
14:01I was going to print out some pliers, but my printer was out of ink.
14:04Did you try calling her or texting her or anything?
14:07I tried calling her with the phone.
14:09Then go straight to the voicemail.
14:11When did you try calling her?
14:13Oh, gosh, I couldn't even remember what the idea was.
14:15Well, I mean, has it been kind of repeatedly?
14:17No, I tried one time.
14:19Oh, just one?
14:20Plus, everybody else was like, oh, yeah, the phone's off.
14:22He was so nonchalant about, oh, yeah, I don't know.
14:25Maybe she's stuck somewhere. I hope she's okay.
14:27That doesn't make sense to me.
14:29For most adults, if something happened to one of their friends, they would do everything
14:34they could to try to help locate that person, particularly in the context of this case.
14:39Is there anything else you could think of? Anything that you think that would help us out?
14:44I don't, I'm not wanting to point fingers, but Jacob was just staring down all night long, watching her every little move.
14:52What I kind of understood, and maybe I misinterpreted, this was pretty much she broke up with him.
14:58I don't know if it was mutual or if he broke up with her or she broke up with him.
15:02I just know she was all excited about being apart from Jacob, honestly.
15:06She was all excited.
15:07About being apart from him?
15:08She's like, I'm done with him. So glad it's over. I don't know why I see it in him.
15:12Right.
15:13Every time I looked at his direction, he was staring at her.
15:15Okay.
15:16I noticed that.
15:20He immediately went to deflecting, bringing up reasons. Oh, she was drinking. She was talking to a lot of guys.
15:27Jacob was staring at her. You know, that's the ex-boyfriend. So when people start deflecting, they're hiding something.
15:34And our goal is to know what they're hiding and why.
15:38Here's the thing.
15:41Yeah.
15:42Same with you guys.
15:44So nothing else you can think of? Anything you want to add on the timeline?
15:51Anything you want to, you know, that you think that maybe you made a mistake when you're telling us?
15:56No. Nothing I can think of.
16:01Okay.
16:02We have a ton of resources that we use, investigative tools that we use, and there's some inconsistencies in her story.
16:13Okay.
16:14And we want you to clear this up for us.
16:17Really horrible times.
16:18Okay.
16:19That's okay.
16:20Yeah.
16:21That's all right.
16:22And you can't expect us, we don't expect you to know every minute of what you did.
16:26Right.
16:27That's not reasonable.
16:28It's not reasonable.
16:29Okay.
16:30But that's the good thing with surveillance, video surveillance at different locations, the cameras that are on the intersections, and as such.
16:38So, you know, we don't have to account for your time, but these things, they take their timestamp.
16:44What we can see is literally the wheels begin to turn in his head, right?
16:49And him beginning to recount, where might I have gone that they might have surveillance footage?
16:55So, we need you to be completely honest with us, because we know a lot more of what's going on.
17:05Okay?
17:06And this is your opportunity to be completely honest with us.
17:09And we need you to be honest, because we know a lot of information.
17:14What you see is him kind of shift in his chair.
17:19And that's a classic tell of somebody who's beginning to feel very uncomfortable.
17:24Jason is beginning to connect the dots that we certainly know more than we revealed to him originally.
17:32And his body language said so much more than his words did.
17:44So, Jason, let's stop goofing around, let's stop playing games, okay?
17:57Because we know that there's a whole lot more to this story, and this is not the time for games.
18:03We just need you to be honest.
18:04This is a big deal.
18:06Any investigator knows, if somebody is talking, you're making progress.
18:12It might be very, very slow progress.
18:14And even if he's going to lie, the fact that he's talking, if he's talking, we're on the right path.
18:19You're in a good position to help yourself right now.
18:24Okay.
18:25So, let's really consider some questions, and let's really consider the answers that you're giving,
18:31before we go further down the road, Jason.
18:33Because I don't want you to waste this opportunity that you have right now, okay?
18:39To be honest with us, because...
18:41I'm trying to understand everything I can.
18:44I mean, I understand, I don't know what you guys know or anything, but...
18:48Jason, we know a lot of stuff, okay?
18:51And we need you to be honest.
18:52Please don't waste this opportunity.
18:54Because this is serious, okay?
18:56So, don't do that to yourself.
18:59Me leaning in and putting my hand on his forearm there is a way for me to try to connect with him,
19:05because humans like that human touch.
19:08And if that need is being met in this way, then there's a higher likelihood, in my experience,
19:13that somebody's going to continue to talk.
19:15So, let's start over.
19:18So, on Saturday, okay, what time do you get to the bar?
19:22I got to the bar at probably 10, 10, 15.
19:26Okay.
19:27I was there until probably 1 o'clock.
19:29Okay, and what happened at 1?
19:31At 1 o'clock, I left.
19:33Because what?
19:34Because of my son.
19:35Okay.
19:36So, I went home, made sure my son was all right, and that was it.
19:39Let's talk about...
19:41Let's talk about your grandma and the text first.
19:45Grandma and the text.
19:47Because when we were out there on Thursday night, I spoke to your grandma.
19:52Right.
19:53And I spoke to her in detail about that.
19:54Right.
19:55About your son being sick and all that, and she explained what she did or didn't do.
20:00Right.
20:01And it doesn't, it doesn't, it's not consistent with what you're saying.
20:06Right.
20:07So, this is your opportunity to straighten it out for us.
20:10She didn't text me.
20:11You're right, she didn't.
20:12You're right.
20:13I had just my phone.
20:15Okay, why did you, why did you not tell us the truth about that?
20:18I spoke to them.
20:19I don't know.
20:20What's the purpose of it?
20:22There is no purpose.
20:23Well, listen, people don't lie to the police for no reason, Jason.
20:26Right.
20:27And we asked you multiple times, and you gave the same lie over and over.
20:30And, you know...
20:32Well, that, that...
20:33I was texting a lot.
20:34I was, you know...
20:35Who else were you texting?
20:36I honestly could not remember who I was texting.
20:40His brain's going 800 million directions, and he's trying to come up with a new strategy,
20:46because he knows his whole statement is, I left to see my son.
20:51Well, that's no longer true.
20:53So now, they're just gonna keep chipping away at him, and have him keep contradicting himself,
20:58and then hopefully, each time, he'll reveal a little bit more of the truth.
21:06So why did you decide to leave the bar?
21:08Because I wanted to go home to my son.
21:09Okay.
21:10So who did you leave the bar with?
21:11No boy.
21:12I left by myself.
21:13And where did you go?
21:14I went home.
21:15From the bar directly to your house.
21:17Didn't make any stops.
21:19Stop nowhere.
21:21Wait a minute.
21:22Wait, wait, wait.
21:23Wait.
21:24Wait.
21:25Excuse me, Jason.
21:26I left the bar, okay?
21:27Hold on.
21:28I left the bar with Deline to food for us.
21:32I bought a bottle of air for her, dropped her back off at the bar, and then me.
21:38Now, why would you lie to us about this, Jason?
21:42I just remembered that I went to food for us.
21:45But that's pretty important.
21:46Jason.
21:47You've been very detailed on everything to us.
21:49Jason.
21:50And this is...
21:51No, I understand.
21:52It's not something you forget, Jason.
21:54It was just so obviously fabricated that he just happened to remember.
21:58Oh, gosh.
22:00Yeah, I forgot.
22:01But yes, now I remember.
22:02This is not something you forget.
22:04I understand.
22:07I...
22:08So, let's talk about this.
22:09This is serious.
22:10It slipped my mind.
22:11I'm serious.
22:12I don't think it did, Jason.
22:13As a matter of fact, I'm quite certain it didn't.
22:16Okay?
22:17There's a whole lot more to this story.
22:18And all these questions that we sat in here and asked you, we obviously knew the answer.
22:23Right.
22:24That was not a slip of the mind.
22:25That was a lie.
22:26Right.
22:27There's a big difference.
22:28It was a lie, correct?
22:29Yeah.
22:30Why?
22:31I don't know.
22:32Scared.
22:33Of what?
22:34Because I know she disappeared around the same time.
22:38So, why would you be scared about that, Jason?
22:48Jason clearly wasn't going to volunteer any more information.
22:53So, it seemed obvious that we needed to pivot on our strategy.
22:57To confront him with facts about his lies.
23:01But ultimately, we wanted to know where Daylene was.
23:04That was at the root of it all.
23:06Where is she?
23:08Most important is we need to get Daylene back to our family.
23:11Right.
23:12Right?
23:13So, you're going to help us find her.
23:15I don't know how to do that.
23:17I'm sure you do.
23:19I'm sure you do.
23:23Jason.
23:24I'm sure you do.
23:28I'm sure you do.
23:30Why would you lie to us about having gone home by yourself?
23:52Slip my mind, I'm sorry.
23:53Okay, what else slipped your mind up until right now?
23:56What else do you want to change about your story?
23:58This is your chance.
24:00Jason, use this opportunity.
24:02Let's talk about your conversation with Elaine leading up to going to Food for Less.
24:11I had offered, I said, do you want to come back to the house, trash on the couch?
24:16She said, okay, it's not too cool, I'll give you a bottle.
24:22I had changed my mind, I had bottled the bottle still and went home.
24:27And why did you take her?
24:28I took her back to Fence.
24:30She was with me and I dropped her back off in Fence, all the way back to my house.
24:34So you dropped her back off in the bar?
24:36Yes.
24:36What's your name?
24:39Shortly after one.
24:42We left a little bit before one, maybe right at one.
24:46You're sure?
24:47What did she do when you dropped her off?
24:49She locked into the bar.
24:50That's weird.
24:51Jason, you know what's weird about that?
24:55You know what's really weird about all that?
24:57There's a s*** of people at Fence.
24:59There's cameras everywhere.
25:01Guess what they caught at Fence?
25:05After we, because we saw you guys leave together.
25:09Or come back into Fence?
25:11Jason.
25:12There's no surveillance of them.
25:14And there's surveillance everywhere.
25:16We sat and we watched hours of footage.
25:19Jason.
25:19Okay.
25:24You guys went home.
25:25To your house.
25:26No, no.
25:27Jason.
25:28Let's, let's, let's quit f***ing around, Jason.
25:31I'm about f***ing done with it.
25:32Got it?
25:33I'm about f***ing done.
25:36Do I need a lawyer or something?
25:37I mean, you guys are starting to yell at me.
25:39I don't understand.
25:39Jason, listen.
25:40I apologize.
25:41I apologize.
25:42I'm sorry.
25:42I'm, I'm, I'm sorry.
25:43Yelling at him and cussing at him was not a successful strategy, right?
25:49And so it seemed very clear.
25:52I needed to apologize and I needed to back it off.
25:55And I needed to be more of that soft touch and more like, hey, it's okay.
26:00We're here.
26:01We, we want to help you.
26:02This is your time.
26:04And you're a good guy.
26:05Okay.
26:06So this can, we can make this work.
26:09We can make this okay.
26:11But you got to be honest.
26:12It's starting right now.
26:15Starting right now.
26:19So you're walking towards the bar around Harvey's?
26:21I had to.
26:21For blood, for dead bodies, for.
26:27Why don't you tell us about where you and Dalene, Dalene went after Food for Less, Jason?
26:33Because it wasn't to the bar.
26:35Jason?
26:38I'm really scared because I know when people are missing, they look like you guys are wicking at me.
26:42The person that's been a mess with usually has done something.
26:46Okay.
26:46Then be honest and stop lying.
26:48I'm sorry.
26:49I'm really scared.
26:50We went back to my house.
26:52We drank a little bit.
26:53Then she called and she started to walk off to go home.
26:59She was, I wasn't going to let her walk all the way home.
27:02She had been drinking a lot.
27:04So I got in my grandma's car.
27:07I didn't know how much she got in.
27:09Why is it that you lied to everybody?
27:12Because I know how people look at when you're the last person.
27:15Like everybody's pointing fingers at me because I think she left the bar with me.
27:19Well, she did leave the bar with you, Jason.
27:21Right.
27:22But now she's missing.
27:23I don't have anything to do with her missing.
27:25Then Jason, why did you not tell us that from the get-go?
27:28Jason?
27:28Because here's the problem.
27:30I'm really scared.
27:32I'm still scared.
27:33Things happen, man.
27:35It's okay.
27:36Okay?
27:36It's not what David's missing.
27:38But, but, so let's, let's make it better.
27:42Okay?
27:43Jason, let's make it better.
27:45Let's make it better right now.
27:46Okay?
27:48Let's make it better.
27:49Do the right thing, man.
27:50You're a good guy.
27:52And I know in your heart.
27:53I'm a good guy.
27:55I'm a good guy.
27:56In your heart, I know you want to do the right thing.
27:58Okay?
27:58I don't mind it.
28:00Don't make mistakes, Jason.
28:03Do the right thing now for, for you.
28:09Well, my daughter's here now.
28:10It's been seven days.
28:11The more that he becomes emotional and the more that he cries, it becomes apparent to me that these are not real tears.
28:22What we see is him beginning to get really, really worried about himself and not about Daling.
28:29He knows that he's in serious trouble.
28:33Jason, the more you talk about it, the better you're going to feel.
28:52The better you're going to feel.
28:53Don't you feel me right now?
28:54You've got to feel better.
28:55Excuse me.
28:56I'll walk.
28:57But Jason.
28:58I should be at home.
29:00But Jason, you've got to feel a little better about, you know, being able to get this off your chest.
29:05You're not able to tell us now.
29:06You haven't been able to tell anybody.
29:07Why?
29:08I'm because I'm scared.
29:10I'm mad if I didn't get it off.
29:12But you get it off your chest.
29:14Jason, listen, because ultimately the truth is going to come out.
29:17Ultimately, the truth will come out, okay?
29:21And how much had you had to drink between the two?
29:26I drank the whole bottle.
29:27Of Jager.
29:28Of Jager.
29:28I should have brought you in Jager.
29:30Did you guys have sex?
29:31No.
29:32Jason.
29:33Jason.
29:34Jason.
29:34Jason.
29:35Why would you lie about that, Jason?
29:40Jason, stop lying.
29:42Let's, let it, hey, let it out now.
29:44It's okay, man.
29:45I'm going to let her walk away.
29:47Jason, that's okay, man, okay?
29:50But you've got to stop lying, okay?
29:53Stop lying.
29:58Is that the first time you guys had sex?
30:01Was she upset because...
30:02It's because we were both drunk.
30:04It's going to never happen.
30:05Well, that's okay.
30:07Was she upset because...
30:08I didn't think so.
30:10I didn't want to first do it.
30:11I didn't want to...
30:12Why do you think she was upset?
30:14She was probably sobering up.
30:16We had sex and we had to hang out for a little bit more.
30:20And then she decided once we were going home.
30:21And she started walking.
30:23So I got her going.
30:25Was she in the front seat or the back seat seat?
30:28She was telling me, just let her go.
30:30Just don't worry about her.
30:31Just let her go.
30:33I figured she was...
30:34Was she yelling?
30:34I figured she was upset about the sex.
30:36I figured...
30:37No.
30:38What was she saying?
30:39She was like, I'm horrible.
30:41I can't believe I did this.
30:42You're a piece of garbage.
30:44To you?
30:45Yeah.
30:45Why was she saying that about you?
30:47I don't know.
30:48Like I said...
30:49What were you saying?
30:50I said, I'm just going to take you home.
30:53You'll be all right.
30:54And then she got out of the car.
30:56I didn't want to pursue the issue.
30:58So I...
30:58I don't know.
30:59Wait.
31:01That's what I mean.
31:02I'm so...
31:02I should have just made sure to do my phone.
31:04Jason said that they drove all the way to Modesto, which is about 30 minutes south of us, and that
31:14Dalene got out of the car at some unknown place.
31:17And instead of alerting the authorities in that community and asking for help, he just left
31:23and went to a gas station.
31:25You were so good to try to stop her.
31:27That's what I mean.
31:28I don't know.
31:28She got out of the car and you didn't go around to help her?
31:32No, I didn't.
31:34I don't really know.
31:37That's why I didn't want to put anybody in the car.
31:40Okay.
31:41She didn't jump out of the car, Jason.
31:44Jason.
31:44Yeah, she didn't.
31:45She didn't jump out.
31:46She stepped out of the car.
31:48Jason, she didn't step out of the car.
31:49She didn't just walk away, Jason.
31:51And he didn't just drive off.
31:52That doesn't make any sense, Jason.
31:54Because when you lie, it's great.
32:01Jason.
32:01Somebody.
32:03No.
32:04Jason.
32:05Jason.
32:05I saw him.
32:06Jason.
32:07Jason.
32:08No.
32:09Where are we going to find a body?
32:10Help us find her.
32:12Help us bring her home.
32:13Her family deserves it.
32:14You have a family.
32:14She has attention.
32:15She deserves it.
32:16I know that.
32:16She does.
32:17I didn't do anything to her.
32:19Come on, Jason.
32:20Listen to me.
32:20You don't seem to understand the gravity of the situation.
32:24Okay?
32:25When Jen explains.
32:27You guys are trying to make you into something that I didn't do.
32:28I don't want you.
32:29I don't.
32:30Definitely don't want you to do that.
32:32Yeah, boy.
32:36Okay?
32:38I'm just glad you guys are just.
32:41I feel like you're making me say something that's not true.
32:43You know, we don't want to put anything in your mouth, but no words in your mouth.
32:48Yep.
32:48It's over.
32:49So you asked for attorney, so.
32:51We can't talk to you at all.
32:52So here's what's going to happen, okay?
32:53You're going to go to jail.
32:55Okay?
32:55Jason?
32:56Good night.
32:57Jason asking for a lawyer and our communication having to end with him was pretty devastating.
33:02As somebody who was fielding the calls from her family every single day, I wanted to know
33:09where she was.
33:10We are looking at a no body, no cause of death investigation.
33:28There's no evidence, really, of his kidnap or what we believe to be murder of Daylene Carlson.
33:35We just know that she has disappeared.
33:38He is the last person to see her.
33:40He is lying about his interactions with her, but that's all we have at this moment.
33:56Gilly was set free for lack of evidence after police arrested him soon after Carlson's disappearance.
34:03This is the only interview he's done.
34:05I really haven't known her that long, and just to be accused of this, it really hurts.
34:08Carlson was last seen with Gilly leaving a bar, then shopping at a grocery store.
34:13She was never seen again.
34:15I'm not that person that you all see on TV.
34:17I'm a kind person.
34:19Never, I don't push myself on anybody.
34:22Everybody that knows me knows that.
34:23No.
34:23No.
34:24No.
34:33No.
34:34No.
34:34No.
34:35No.
34:47It just seemed like such a perfect opportunity to have another discussion with him about
34:56Dalene's whereabouts, but clearly I was not the right person to have that discussion with him.
35:00Let's quit around, Jason. I'm about done with it. Got it? I'm about done.
35:06Introducing Detective Dela Cruz to Jason was an opportunity to see how he would respond to
35:13a female investigator. He doesn't have to talk to me. He doesn't have to be there.
35:20He wasn't under arrest here, so he could really have told me to f*** off.
35:43What happens is you come across a lot of people, I do, you know, in the course of 20 years.
35:50And there's people that, you know, not empathy or, or, but I kind of feel for you, if that makes any sense.
36:00I think so, I don't know.
36:03Jason seems like the type of suspect that just needed to be coddled and just be reassured
36:09as opposed to hitting him hard and him shutting down.
36:13You seem like a nice guy.
36:14Yeah.
36:15You know, and a lot of times I know that nice people get caught up in stuff.
36:22That's what I'm afraid of.
36:23That's what I'm afraid of for you, too.
36:26To be very honest with you.
36:27Yeah.
36:27Because I think you've gotten caught up in stuff.
36:32And my, some of my heart feels for you.
36:35I feel bad for you.
36:36Right.
36:38I think something happened.
36:41You're not someone to actually hurt somebody.
36:44I think something bad happened.
36:46So, when you watch this, he acknowledges for a minute by nodding his head.
36:50You can see that when she says, something bad happened, I think you know.
36:53And he's like, yeah.
36:55And she's trying to relay to him, you can trust me.
36:58If anybody would want to help you on this department and be on your side, you got one person.
37:03Right.
37:04Okay.
37:05And I don't do that often.
37:06I understand.
37:08There's a lot of people that I've sat across the table from.
37:11Mm-hmm.
37:12Okay.
37:12And I've done some, some bad things.
37:16It does not make them a bad person.
37:18Right.
37:19By no means.
37:20Okay?
37:21I just don't really know.
37:22I have nothing else that I can think of.
37:24Like, I've been thinking every day.
37:25I just, I don't really know.
37:28At that point, he just kind of, like, didn't budge.
37:31He just reminded me of someone that wanted to go ahead and tell the truth, but it wouldn't
37:35come out of his mouth.
37:36Right.
37:37Right now.
37:38Right now.
37:38Right now.
37:39Right now.
37:39Right now.
37:39Right now.
37:39Right now.
37:39Right now.
37:39Right now.
37:40Right now.
37:40Right now.
37:41Right now.
37:42The written timeline was something that was beneficial for the case.
38:04We wanted to do an analysis of the events in Jason's writings.
38:10So when we get it on paper, there's one portion where he starts speaking about Dalene in past
38:17tense.
38:18That's not good.
38:18That means he did something.
38:19That means she's gone.
38:21That means she's gone.
38:21That means she's gone.
38:21The condition of the body was extremely poor.
38:23The condition of the body was extremely poor.
38:27So we were not able to use DNA and had to use a forensic dentist who had to use a forensic dentist
38:32who, two days later, positively identified the remains as Dalene Carlson.
38:38Dalene had been shot five times.
38:39And we recovered five times.
38:40And we recovered five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five.
38:44And we recovered five spent .22 caliber casings close proximity to her body.
38:50We covered five days later.
38:51That means, and we recovered five, five.
38:52And then there was something I was just saying.
38:53The body was extremely poor.
38:54That means it wasn't like they were also extremely poor.
38:55forensic dentist who two days later positively identified the remains as
39:00Dalene Carlson. Dalene had been shot five times and we recovered five spent 22
39:09caliber casings close proximity to her body.
39:15To have a young gal like that, that's beautiful, that has a lot going for her, to have her life
39:25cut short, it's horrible.
39:45Prosecutors say the evidence that they were able to get once Carlson's body was discovered
40:02fits in with the timeline that they already had for the sequence of events here at Gilley's
40:06house that night.
40:07What they don't have is the murder weapon.
40:10Through the course of this investigation we learned who all of Jason's family was in
40:15this area and through questioning Jason's uncle we learned that Jason had an old 22 caliber
40:25semi-automatic handgun that he gave his uncle and told his uncle to put in a safe and keep
40:31for him.
40:33I asked him, when did Jason give you that gun?
40:35And he said, you know, Jason gave me that gun just after that girl disappeared.
40:43We did a forensic examination of that gun in relation to the casings that were found at the
40:49scene and through that examination the experts were able to say that that gun that was provided
40:55to us by the uncle was the murder weapon.
41:12Our evidence for the rape charge was Jason's statement that Daylene woke up after having
41:19sex and was extremely mad at Jason.
41:23So those were the grounds I used and I believe was the motive for the homicide.
41:27I believe that he was worried about being accused of rape and that was more important
41:33to him than Daylene's life.
41:37The amount of agony that we went through every day.
41:39Every day it was harder.
41:40Every day it was not easier.
41:41It was harder and harder and harder.
41:44And I hope that he goes down, God forgive me for saying it, but I hope he does.
42:08Jason Gilley was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, which I believe
42:13was the right sentence.
42:16Following the trial, the jurors explained that this video and this interrogation was critical
42:22in their decision making because they were able to see that his thought process and his
42:27lies were kind of the final nail in the coffin, so to speak, in his fate.
42:32He took my daughter away.
42:36Why take somebody else's life because of selfish, selfishness.
42:41One of the saddest parts of this case is the fact that Daylene's life ended so, so tragically
43:02and so, so prematurely and left so many people absolutely completely devastated.
43:07Walter Lee regrets and ag pee.
43:09shocking
43:10A bunch of tragic losses.
43:10Where, who's the aftermath after
43:23How does that happen for us?
