00:00Today is a tough day for us here at the New York Post.
00:03We lost a giant, a Hall of Famer, a colleague,
00:07and for me, someone I deeply respected
00:10as both a journalist and a human being.
00:13Larry Brooks passed away at 75 years old,
00:16leaving behind a legacy in hockey writing
00:18that will never be duplicated.
00:21For nearly five decades, Larry defined what it meant
00:23to cover hockey in the New York metro area
00:25with voice, with edge, with fearlessness,
00:28and with an unmatched command of the sport.
00:31And I say this with complete confidence.
00:33I never met anyone who knew hockey the way Larry did.
00:37His depth, his memory, his understanding of the game,
00:41it was his own universe.
00:43But what I'll remember the most isn't the reporting.
00:46It's the conversations that we had.
00:48Many times before I even recorded a video with Larry,
00:51he talked to me not just about hockey,
00:53but about life, about balance, about perspective,
00:57about how important it is to spend time
00:59with the people you love.
01:01Those moments meant something to me then,
01:03and they mean even more to me now.
01:06Larry, he loved his job.
01:08He loved his beat.
01:10He loved the people he covered
01:11and the people he worked with.
01:13And you feel that in every tribute
01:14that's pouring in from around the hockey world,
01:17from players, coaches, executives, broadcasters,
01:20and writers who respected him
01:22because he always brought honesty
01:23and substance to the rink.
01:26But here at The Post,
01:27he was loved just as much.
01:29And I want to take a moment
01:30to acknowledge something special.
01:32How Larry uplifted people.
01:34How he mentored people.
01:36How he invested in our younger reporters.
01:38The best example is my friend
01:40and colleague Molly Walker.
01:41Someone Larry championed,
01:43supported, and believed in.
01:45Their partnership on the New York Rangers beat
01:47wasn't just productive.
01:48It was genuine.
01:49It was built on trust, respect, and pride.
01:54Watching the way Larry guided Molly
01:55spoke volumes about the kind of person that he was.
02:00Larry's impact didn't stay in the press box.
02:02It didn't stay in the locker room.
02:04It didn't stay in his legendary columns.
02:07It lived in the people around him.
02:09And that's why his passing hurts.
02:12Because you don't just lose
02:14an all-time great hockey writer.
02:15You lose someone who cared.
02:17Someone who listened.
02:19Someone who shared wisdom quietly
02:20without ever asking for recognition.
02:23Someone who made this place at the Post
02:26and all of us better.
02:28So Larry, thank you.
02:30Thank you for the conversations.
02:32Thank you for the lessons.
02:34Thank you for the example
02:35that you set every single day.
02:39From all of us here at the New York Post,
02:41we'll miss you.
02:42We'll honor you.
02:43And we'll keep telling stories
02:45the way that you taught us.
02:47With honesty, passion, and purpose.
02:51Rest in peace, Brooksy.
