00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Thank you very much.
01:00Was special. Went on to play football for England. Over 900,000 career appearances. 26th year football career. Cap for England 53 times. Oh yes.
01:13Former England goalkeeper David James, MBE, is 46 today. And where's he celebrating? He's celebrating here in the Countdown studio. Happy birthday to you.
01:25Happy birthday, David. Brilliant stuff.
01:32I think the 900,000 was slightly over-egging it.
01:35I think I meant to say 900. In fact, it was over 1,000, wasn't it?
01:41It was over 1,000. All right.
01:42So, birthdays. I sort of don't bother with them, really. But I did on my 70th. And I took the grandchildren off to South Africa as a special treat. Not just for them, but for me, too, on safari. And that was a very special and unusual birthday for me.
01:59Because I normally keep things really quiet. What about you, Rachel? Have you found yourself under a strange sky on your birthday?
02:07Um, well, my 30th I spent with a Viking beard and Viking horns on on the top of a mountain in Lake Tahoe.
02:13Of course you did. Of course I did. Yes, it was a good disguise.
02:17Very good. But, Rachel, we've got with us now, again, Chris Leaney, son of Glen, runner-up back in 1999. He was the winner of the first teapot.
02:27Yeah. It's quite a valuable thing, you know.
02:29Yeah, it doesn't get used at all. It's very much a cabinet item.
02:32I should hope so. I should hope so. Anyway, from Chalgrove in Oxfordshire, an economic student at Bath, and you're a cricketer.
02:40And, uh, yeah, you had a good win against a terrific competitor, actually.
02:45But, so, we're pleased to see you here. You're joined by Stephen Bloom, a PE teacher from Amersham, who loves his football.
02:51And you've, uh, climbed Kilimanjaro. How long did that take?
02:55Uh, five days.
02:56Did it, really?
02:57Yeah. Not, uh, 24 times five days, but, uh, over the course of five days.
03:02Yeah.
03:02Um, it was a fantastic experience.
03:05How high is it? Can you remember?
03:06Uh, it's, uh, over 19,000 feet, and I think just over 6,000 metres.
03:11Really? All right. Well done.
03:13Now, interestingly, your father, Paul, your dad, competed in the last series of Countdown.
03:19He did, yeah.
03:19And he's in the audience?
03:20He certainly is.
03:21Fantastic. How did he do?
03:23No, he did well, but I'll hope to go one better.
03:25He's got his eye on you.
03:26I bet he has.
03:27All right. Big round of applause for Stephen and Chris.
03:30And over in the corner, of course, Susie and our birthday boy.
03:37We shall be talking to you a little bit later on, David, but now it's down to business.

05:20That will give you a six.
05:23Well done.

06:48Still looking for good words.
06:49How do we get on?
06:52Guardies.
06:52Guardies, yeah.
06:53I had grades, but guardies obviously beats that.
06:56Yeah, they're a type of fish.
06:58A guardie is a type of fish, and it's a garfish.
07:01Any of a number of long, slender fish with beak-like jaws and sharply pointed teeth.
07:07And, yeah, another word for them is a guardie.
07:09So you can have guardies for seven.
07:11Yeah.
07:12You wouldn't want to be bitten by a guardie by the sound of it.
07:14Definitely not.
07:15Eleven plays Chris's six, and it's Chris's numbers game.
07:18Chris?
07:19Can I get two from the top, please?

10:42And Susie?
10:43There was an eight there as well.

10:48Very good.
10:48And that's their fate.
10:5028 to 23, still that five-point difference.

12:07Migrated.
12:08Very good.
12:10Well done.
12:13Well done.
12:1436 to 23.
12:15Susie and David?
12:16Well, I was short of both of those, but Susie came up with equiline.
12:22Yeah, migrated, matured, and also muriate is there for seven,
12:27and that's a derivative of muriatic acid, another word for hydrochloric acid.
12:33All right, well done.
12:34As I say, 36 plays 23, and it's a numbers game for Stephen.
12:38Stephen?
12:39Can I have one large and five small, please?
12:41Thank you, Stephen.
12:42One large one and five small ones.
12:45And this time, the small ones are five, three, six, four, ten,
12:52and the big one, 100.
12:54And the target, 481.

13:31And Chris?
13:33Thank you, Stephen.

13:40Yes.
13:41And take it away.
13:42Lovely.
13:43Well done, 4-8-1.
13:44Same way, Chris?
13:45Same way.
13:46Happy?
13:47All right, well done.
13:48So, same difference, 46 plays 33.
13:51As we turn to David James.
13:54David, you've got a story from the FA Cup Final in 1996 to tell us.
14:02Yes.
14:03As I've mentioned before on the show, the FA Cup holds a special place in my heart.
14:0896 was my first Cup Final.
14:12And the tradition then was to do the songs, which I didn't take part in for one reason
14:17or another.
14:18And the other tradition, obviously, was the Cup Final suit.
14:21And I'd been very fortunate to be a model for a very famous Italian fashion designer.
14:30And the lad said to me, well, Dave, can you get a suit?
14:35And I'm like, well, I can ask them, but, you know, whatever.
14:39I asked this designer and they said, you can have it, but at a price.
14:44So, I thought the lads wouldn't be interested.
14:46They'd rather have their one for free.
14:47But, no, they were quite happy to pay an extra bit of money for a special suit.
14:52Part of the sort of debating party, if you like, on what this suit was going to look like was certain John Barnes.
15:00And for those who followed John Barnes' fashion sense in the 90s, that was dangerous.
15:06Anyway, John got everything sorted out.
15:10And then the day of fitting arrived and we had these cream suits.
15:16We looked very dapper, if not a little bit odd, according to others.
15:21And, yeah, we went to the cup final. We lost.
15:24We looked like the band before the cup final.
15:28And forever will be associated as the FA Cup final suit year sort of thing.
15:35Fortunately, the cream suit doubled up for cricket clothes for travelling Bunbury's one year.
15:44So, yeah, it wasn't thrown away.
15:46And, yeah, I mean, the funny thing is, because we lost, we looked, apparently, we looked foolish.
15:53That might have been the performance, actually, because that wasn't much better.
15:56But, had we won...
15:57Do you remember the score, way back in 96?
15:59Yeah, 1-0, 87, and certain Mr... Canton?
16:02I can't remember his name, I can't remember.
16:04What happened to him?
16:05Yeah.
16:06I think you remember, yes.
16:07I think I remember.
16:08Yeah, had we won, we would have been the best-dressed team to have won the cup final.
16:12There we are.
16:13Yes.
16:14All right.
16:15Well done, David.
16:16Well done.
16:17Cream suits indeed, but we've got a fight on our hands here.

24:55What have we got over there?
24:56Er...
24:57Just another seven.
24:58Er...
24:59Luthier.
25:00L-U-T-H-I-E-R.
25:02A maker of stringed instruments, violins, guitars.
25:05That's right.
25:06That's right.
25:07Very good.
25:0882, please.
25:0962.
25:1020 points in it as we turn to Susie for her origins of words.
25:14I'm just going to return very briefly to one of your favourite facts, Nick, I think,
25:19is that the rostrum, the speaker's platform in the Roman forum, is from the Latin for beak,
25:26because the beaks or prows of ships were collected as trophies at war by the Roman sailors, the Roman soldiers,
25:35and they would collect these beaks and then decorate the speaker's platform in the forum with these beaks as tributes, really,
25:42or pledges to their pride and their glory.
25:45And over time, the rostrum, this word for beak, was applied not just to these prows decorating the platform, but to the platform itself.
25:53And we still have the rostrum today.
25:56And that goes back to a Latin word, rodere, ultimately, to bite or to gnaw the idea of a beak before it was applied to a ship.
26:06And it's given us rodent as well, so a sort of slightly strange neighbour, a rostrum and a rodent.
26:12I had an email from one viewer, Martin Hicks, who asked whether rostrum is linked to a roster,
26:17which is a list of duties, particularly given to military personnel.
26:21And that one has a slightly strange history, too, but it's not the same one.
26:25Because in Holland, the list of duties for men in the army was written down on ruled paper.
26:31No surprise there. But the lines for them resembled a gridiron.
26:35They thought of a gridiron whenever they saw this sort of lined paper with all the duties listed on it.
26:39And the Dutch name for a gridiron was rooster, from their word roosten to roast.
26:44And, of course, that eventually gave us roster.
26:47And it's slightly tied in.
26:49It's a little bit tangential here, but I had another email from John Carnarvon,
26:54who wondered where sledging in cricket comes from.
26:58And the link there, as I say, slightly tenuous, is that when we ridicule or criticise somebody,
27:03we give them a roasting, just as cricketers would give each other a sledging.
27:07And the idea is simply to do with the lack of subtlety and crudity involved in wielding a sledgehammer.
27:13That's where that one comes from.
27:14Oh, I see.
27:15In cricket.
27:16So, we've gone to the rostrum, to the roster, to a sledgehammer.
27:19Slightly secure to three, but hopefully it's answered some of our viewers' questions.
27:23Mark's at all the mine. Well done.
27:25Very good.
27:28There we go. 82 plays 62, and it's Stephen's letters game.

29:01Yeah, daunts, very nice.
29:03Very good.
29:04And in the corner?
29:06Dave and Susie?

29:12Uh, quants are there as well, which are the, um, poles used for propelling a barge or a punt.
29:17Um, that is a quant.

30:45And Susie?
30:47You can have the ballet term point with an S on, P-O-Y-N-T-E-S,
30:53and to be on point is to be on the tip of your toes if you're a ballerina.
30:57All right, so here we go.
30:5995, Stephen.
31:01Good score.
31:01Chris on 69, and it's Stephen's numbers game.

32:22Let's go into the final round.
32:23It's conundrum time.
32:24Gentlemen, fingers on buzzers.
32:26Let's roll that countdown conundrum.

33:12Chris Leaney, how bad luck, mate.
33:14Because you toppled somebody who was a very high scorer.
33:17And along comes Stephen Bloom.
33:19But you go home.
33:21Your dad might have had the first teapot way back in 1999.
33:25But you've got one to join.
33:27I do, indeed.
33:28To join his.
33:29And take this goodie bag back to Bath with your teapot.

33:48David, it's been a pleasure.
33:51Unfortunately, I didn't get a nine-letter word today.
33:53I didn't even get the conundrum.
33:54So I'm going to have to go home and do some homework.
33:57But there's always, you know, the next time you come.
34:00And I hope that you'll come soon again.
