UN elects Phoebe Okowa of Kenya to International Court of Justice (ICJ)

In a historic vote at the United Nations on Thursday, Kenyan law professor Phoebe Okowa was elected as a judge to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), emerging victorious from a competitive field of African candidates after a series of tense voting rounds.

00:00Kenya's Phoebe Okowa was elected to the International Court of Justice on Thursday.
00:07She secured 106 votes in the General Assembly and 8 votes in the Security Council,
00:13defeating opponents from Sierra Leone and Nigeria after a closely contested election.
00:20As a result of the independent voting in the Assembly and the Council,
00:27Phoebe Okowa of Kenya has obtained an absolute majority in both organs.
00:33Phoebe Okowa of Kenya is therefore dully elected a member of the International Court of Justice
00:41to serve for a term of office commencing today, 12 November 2025 and ending on February 5, 27.
00:50Phoebe Okowa takes over the seat previously held by Judge Abdulkawi Yusuf, who resigned in September.
00:58She will serve on the International Court of Justice until February 2027.
