Ukraine justice, energy ministers resign over major corruption scandal

00:00With bundles of cash allegedly embezzled from Ukraine's energy sector,

00:05the country's anti-corruption agencies have busted a high-level criminal network.

00:10Among it is Justice Minister Girman Galushenko,

00:14whose voice was recorded in a conversation with some of the suspects.

00:18He's accused of accepting personal benefits in exchange for control of money flow in the energy sector.

00:25The mastermind of the $100 million scheme is Timo Mindic,

00:30a close ally of President Vladimir Zelensky, according to investigators.

00:35Timo Mindic decided to take advantage of the situation in Ukraine,

00:40of his friendly relations with the President

00:42and of his connections with senior government officials to enrich himself illegally.

00:48Timo Mindic is believed to have fled the country and pressure is now on the President.

00:54It is important that he admits that his business partner, Timo Mindic,

00:58ran away from the country and he suspects it's not acceptable.

01:02He needs to stop covering up his friends and make it as clear as possible

01:07to maintain trust of Ukrainian people.

01:11The 15-month-long investigation into the energy sector led to five people being arrested

01:16and seven charged on Tuesday.

01:19The government sacked the supervisory board of the nuclear power provider Eno Goatom,

01:24through which top officials are believed to have benefited from forcing contractors

01:28to pay illegal kickback fees.

01:31And amid the scandal, Energy Minister Svetlana Rinchuk has handed in her resignation,

01:36despite not being named in the probe.

01:38Earlier this year, Volodymyr Zelenskyy came under fire for trying to limit the power

01:44of Ukraine's anti-corruption bodies, before eventually backing down,

01:48following mass protests and backlash from the European Union.
