02:06Oh, I thought Mr. Compliment with us I'll take it

02:09I'm talking about the houses

02:11Of course you are

02:13What's not to love about a Queensland resident

02:20Just ask country kids Brooke and Michael

02:24Who went to boarding school together in Toowoomba

02:27Way back when Neil still flew cattle class

02:31I wouldn't say that it was love at first sight

02:35I think one of us was definitely far naughtier in class than the other

02:39So it took a little bit of time for Michael to work his charm

02:43But obviously worked

02:45It was definitely love at first sight for me

02:47Um

02:48I like shiny and pretty things

02:53The shine hasn't worn off

02:55A quarter of a century on

02:58They're married and settled on Queensland's famous sunny coast as the locals call it

03:06We'd always said let's move to the Sunshine Coast

03:08When we're older

03:10And then about seven years ago

03:12We just thought what are we waiting for

03:14Although famous for its beaches

03:16Like its northern neighbour Noosa

03:18The sunny coast also has a gorgeous hinterland

03:2212 kilometres from the coast

03:24It's almost a tropical oasis

03:26Just 15 minutes drive from the surf

03:29Beautiful isn't it?

03:30Isn't it beautiful?

03:31We didn't really know anybody here

03:36Didn't have a job

03:38And it was the best thing that we've ever done

03:40They settled in the hinterland at Budrum

03:44Buying this classic Queenslander perched on a hillside

03:48When we first bought the house

03:50I was excited because I knew it had potential

03:54We instantly fell in love with the property

03:56It's on an 800 metre block

03:57It's got a swimming pool

03:58Brooke now works locally as an executive assistant

04:02While Mick is a fly-in fly-out mining supervisor in far north Queensland

04:08He has a week-on week-off roster

04:10So Brooke is alone a lot of the time

04:13During the week I don't get too lonely here

04:15Because I'm really busy with my work

04:17But on a weekend when I don't have anything on

04:21It can be pretty lonely on my own

04:24Brooke thinks if they were just closer to the coast

04:29She'd have a lot more options to socialise

04:31I'd love to feel, I guess, a sense of community

04:35Closer to the water

04:36I can't walk anywhere

04:41But Mick loves coming home to his little piece of paradise

04:45Sure, there's always jobs waiting for him

04:48But for Mick, it's worth it

04:50Got a bit of character

04:51Kind of reminds me of a big tree house

04:53And it's a bit of a party house as well

04:55Like it's good for entertaining

04:57That's entertaining Mick style

04:59Michael often says that he has the most reputable bar establishment at the Sunshine Coast

05:09So he likes to just stay home and hang out in the Tiki Bar

05:21The Tiki Bar, that was just a little thing that started down in the pool area

05:24Much to Brooke's disgust

05:26But I think she's starting to come around now

05:28I might secretly like it

05:31A little bit

05:36They both agree the tree house needs a little tree LC

05:40Starting with the layout

05:42The master bedroom is very close to the central living area

05:46Feels like the bedrooms in the kitchen, basically

05:48The bathrooms are embarrassing

05:50Personally, the old bathrooms, they don't worry me

05:52I like a bit of colour

05:54Yeah, I don't think rainbow fish tiles are the colour that we need though

06:00When the pair do spend time together, it's often down at the coast

06:06So Brooke hoped she could convince her husband they can move there permanently

06:10So I think there's potential to love a new house

06:16I prefer not to move at all

06:20So here we are in Budrum

06:26You can tell we are trees, slopes, nice gardens

06:29It's beautiful

06:31And in fact I think I've got a bit of a team listed advantage this time

06:37Well, Brooke does have a few niggles with the house

06:40But her main issues are with the location

06:43And whilst this is all very nice

06:45It's a very retirement village

11:34The layout is a major issue with the master bedroom

11:47To keep Mick and Brooke planted in their tree house, I need to make them both house proud

11:55They need a separate main bedroom, modern bathrooms and an overall better vibe to stop Brooke pining for the coast

12:03This place has to become her new socialising hub for those weeks when Mick is away

12:09What are you looking for in the next correct home? You know, what's the budget? Where's it going to be?

12:58Especially for a modern entertainer that's nearer the action and steps to the sand

13:05But I'm here to help, help Brooke escape

13:29Brooke and Mick moved to the Sunshine Coast for the lifestyle

13:33But Brooke feels their current house is in the shade

13:37We would enjoy living at the coast so much more if we were a little bit closer to the action

13:42I suppose, closer to the water

13:43I'd love to be able to just go to a coffee shop

13:46Mick on the other hand

13:51He loves the serenity

13:53His locals only tiki bar

13:55And he reckons a reno can give them the best of both worlds

13:59I always had the plans of renovating this place and pretty much move from here to a retirement home when I can't get up and down the stairs

14:05While I can't relocate the house, I do believe we can make it a place that Brooke will never want to leave

14:15I'm going to make it unrecognisable

14:18Starting with the living area which feels gloomy and sterile

14:22This dark floor is really really dating the house and dragging it down

14:31You need a pale floor

14:32Sounds great

14:33And the other thing we need to do is get rid of the dado rail, the dark dado rail that's running between the panelling and the upper part of the wall

14:42It's kind of contracting the space between the rail and the ceiling

14:46It's making it feel smaller than it actually is

14:48Yeah, that makes sense

14:50All the other magic is going to happen in the other part of the house

14:53So should we go to the office?

14:57The huge office with the best views in the house was always overkill given Brooke's the only one working here

15:03So in this part of the house the real heavy lifting happens because we're going to do a major switch around

15:10So where we're standing in this unused office, this will be the main bedroom

15:16Oh wow

15:18And we're moving it as far away from the kitchen as possible to create the ultimate secluded suite

15:25Complete with walk-in robe, ensuite bathroom and a new study

15:31It will all connect seamlessly to the rest of the house via a new hallway

15:37The old bathroom toilet and laundry will be replaced and modernised within the existing footprint

15:45And we'll close off the superfluous kitchen doorway to maximise privacy

15:50Walk-in robe would be amazing

15:52Feel like you're coming around Brooke

15:54I'm liking this, this is good

15:56I think the impact of what we're going to do will punch well above its weight in terms of the way it changes your life in this house

16:03I think we've been so stuck in terms of just not knowing how we could make this work

17:22There's a multitude of walking trails, fishing spots

17:26And the all-important community she craves

17:29This is where Brooke and Mick already spend their downtime

17:33But I'm cutting the commute and moving them in

17:39So you two, this is our duplex option

17:42The reason I think a duplex option could work for you two is because generally it brings a prime location

17:48And it gives, you know, that sort of peace of mind, security and all that sort of thing

17:52And low maintenance

17:54This location for me is absolutely perfect

22:46And I've come up with a beautiful, bespoke palette for Brooke and Mick

22:51I know that you love a bit of colour

22:54And that colour, I think, kind of needs to reflect where we are

24:46My first escape plan was thwarted by mixed country instincts for space and privacy

25:06So, I'll be avoiding that obstacle

25:08To find more space within budget, I'm heading a bit further south

25:14So, we're heading to Battery Hill

25:26Battery Hill is actually part of Caloundra, another of the sunny coast popular towns

25:31This area is loaded with cafe culture, markets and surf clubs

25:37With a variety of renovated high-set Queenslanders and contemporary coastal architecture

25:43All within a barefoot stroll to Ballinger Beach

25:47I reckon I found the sweet spot
