00:00Congress Reaches Deal, Ending 40-Day Government Shutdown
00:03After 40 days, the longest government shutdown in U.S. history has officially ended.
00:10Congress reached a bipartisan agreement Sunday to reopen federal agencies,
00:14restore pay to affected employees, and fund operations through January 30, 2026.
00:20According to Fox News, Senate Democrats provided enough support to advance the measure after
00:24extended negotiations led by Senator Susan Collins with key participation from senators.
00:29Angus King, Jean Shaheen, and Maggie Hassan.
00:33The deal centers on a continuing resolution that restarts funding for essential services,
00:37reverses furlough-related firings, and guarantees back pay for the 1.4 million federal workers impacted.
00:44Earlier in the day, Senate Republicans proposed a three-bill minibus funding package covering
00:49military construction and veterans affairs, agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration,
00:55a move that helped draw bipartisan backing.
00:57Senate Majority Leader John Thune had pledged to keep senators in session until an agreement
01:02was reached, insisting that there's going to be something to vote on.
01:06His persistence helped pressure both parties to break the impasse that had strained federal
01:10services and disrupted air travel, food assistance, and other public operations.
01:16Notably, the agreement does not include an extension of Obamacare premium subsidies,
01:20a key Democratic demand during the shutdown.
01:23However, John Thune promised a separate vote on the issue after the government reopens.
01:28Following Senate approval, the House swiftly passed the measure, and President Donald Trump
01:32signed it into law, officially ending the shutdown late Sunday.
01:36While the deal restores government functions, partisan tensions remain high, with lawmakers on
01:41both sides acknowledging that deeper budget negotiations will resume in the coming weeks.
