Transcript
00:00Excuse me! Hey, back up!
00:02Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:04And today, we're counting down our picks for the biggest scandals to shake up the dance floor on Dancing with the Stars.
00:10Are you going to be bejeweling it for Dancing with the Stars?
00:12That's going to be answered.
00:13Yeah.
00:15Number 30, Sabrina Bryan's double elimination.
00:19Sabrina Bryan is perhaps best known as a cheetah girl and undeniably the dancer of the group, so everyone knew she could move.
00:26She stayed on the top end of the leaderboard every week.
00:29Earning her first perfect score by week 4.
00:39But then week 6 proved that sometimes the middle of the leaderboard is the most dangerous place to be.
00:45Sabrina and Mark.
00:49Sabrina Bryan voted off Dancing with the Stars.
00:53It was shocking indeed, but we hoped season 15's all-star show would finally bring redemption.
00:58Nope.
00:59In an almost unbelievable case of deja vu, she was booted yet again in, can you believe it, week 6.
01:06Sabrina and Louie, I'm so sorry.
01:09Sabrina, oh, I know, I know.
01:12We are as shocked right now as we were in season 5 when you stood here.
01:18The second time felt even more scandalous, and she just received full marks for her rumba.
01:23I wanna make you feel wanted, baby, I wanna make you feel wanted.
01:37Number 29.
01:38Abby Lee Miller vs. Maxim Schmierkowski.
01:41We've gotta admit, sometimes guest judges on Dancing with the Stars aren't exactly the most...
01:46insightful.
01:47But say what you will about Abby Lee Miller, she knows dance.
01:50I know you have a ton of experience judging competitions.
01:53What are you looking for tonight with our dancers?
01:56Straight legs, pointed feet, perfect musicality, inspiration, emotional changes, pretty much everything.
02:05Still, rumor has it that not all the pros were thrilled to see her on the panel,
02:08as they disapprove of her teaching methods, especially due to the demographic she's known for training.
02:13While some kept their opinions off-camera, one pro who made no attempt to hide his disdain was Max Schmierkowski.
02:20Your feet were completely sickled on top of each other.
02:23When you did the side extension to the ronde jambe, to the panche, that foot was like this.
02:31Perhaps the real scandal here is that producers brought Miller in despite the pros' feelings towards her.
02:36But of course, it was Max's scathing post-dance comment to Erin Andrews that made headlines.
02:40What were your thoughts on the constructive criticism there?
02:44I really don't care for anything that she has to say.
02:47Oh, Maxie!
02:49Number 28.
02:50Gleb Sevchenko's relationship drama.
02:53In season 29, Gleb Sevchenko was partnered with Selling Sunset's Chrishell Staus.
02:57The two clearly had chemistry.
02:59Perhaps too much for some.
03:01He's tough, but he's great.
03:04I feel like he's very patient.
03:05So I feel like he's a good blend.
03:07He pushes me really, really hard.
03:09Shortly after their elimination, Sevchenko's wife, Elena Samodanova, went public with her intentions to end their 14-year marriage,
03:16accusing him of, quote, ongoing infidelity and saying enough is enough.
03:21No wife should ever stand by and watch while another woman gifts her husband expensive presents,
03:26lures him out to dinners, and seduces him at every turn.
03:30Last night was the final straw, and I can no longer turn my head the other way.
03:35It quickly snowballed into a full-on feud, with each accusing the other of being unfaithful.
03:40Sevchenko even accused his ex of orchestrating the whole thing,
03:43telling him it would be nice if he sent flowers to Staus and did so publicly.
03:47Honestly, it got super messy.
03:49While he asked for privacy and healing at the time, it has been anything but.
03:54Meanwhile, Staus got caught up in the crossfire, taking to socials to avoid selling scandals.
03:59Number 27. Tyra Banks Becomes Host
04:02Season 28 marked the end of an era with Tom Bergeron and Aaron Andrews' exit.
04:07We'll get to that later.
04:08They were replaced by Tyra Banks, who also took on executive producer duties.
04:13I cannot believe it. I am finally here.
04:16You guys, my family and I have been fans of this show since day one.
04:20And look, mama, I'm in the ballroom!
04:23I'm in the ballroom, and I get to say,
04:26Welcome to Dancing with the Stars!
04:29Fans simply couldn't warm up to her and would nitpick her hosting style and call out every stumble.
04:34Alfonso Ribeiro, who joined her as co-host in Season 31, was quick to defend Banks, saying she faced an impossible battle, not helped by pandemic restrictions.
04:43And not having the ability to connect with the celebrities and with the pros, how do you do that?
04:52Yeah.
04:52Right? Um, it was always a two-person job that became a one-woman show.
04:57So everything was on her to deliver everything when the show wasn't designed that way.
05:03She ultimately stepped down after three seasons.
05:05Whatever legacy she had hoped to leave on the show will perhaps forever be overshadowed by a glitch that actually wasn't even her fault.
05:13There's been an error in our control room, but we're making it happen.
05:18This is live TV, right?
05:20Number 26. Charlotte McKinney vs. Bruno Tonioli
05:23Does someone need to remind the judges that they're there to critique the dances and nothing else?
05:28You're never gonna win the Nobel Prize for quantum physics, but you are easy on the eye, and you produce some wonderful shapes.
05:37I'm just judging that. Just the kids!
05:39Sometimes it really feels that way.
05:42Sometimes it could just be a miscommunication, like this interaction between Amber Rose and Julianne Hough.
05:48Rose took the judges' comments as, quote, body shaming.
05:51But Hough was quick to explain that she'd been talking about the dancing.
05:54Julianne has responded to Amber's podcast, telling E.T. in a statement, quote,
05:59My comments were solely reacting to the quality of the dance I was judging.
06:04Any kind of body shaming is the furthest thing from who I am and what I stand for.
06:09But there was no way to misinterpret it when Bruno Tonioli gave his feedback to model and actress Charlotte McKinney.
06:15The shock in the room was audible, and Tom Bergeron quickly stepped in to defend her.
06:20Neither are you.
06:21No!
06:22McKinney was eliminated that night, but she did not go quietly, calling out the judges' inappropriate behavior.
06:27But a lot of people are pretty angry about that.
06:30Yeah, I mean, it just, it didn't make sense.
06:33We had, we weren't talking about smarts.
06:34We weren't talking about anything like that.
06:36It was just, came out of nowhere.
06:37Number 25, Artem Chigvincev scandal.
06:41In 2024, news broke that Dancing with the Stars pro Artem Chigvincev was arrested under, quote,
06:47suspicion of domestic violence.
06:49E.T. has confirmed Artem was booked at 10.40 a.m. in Napa Valley, California.
06:53Chigvincev had met his then-spouse, Nikki Bella, now Garcia, when they were partnered in season 25,
06:59back when she was engaged to John Cena.
07:01He was ultimately cleared of the charges and released on bail, but Garcia filed for divorce soon after.
07:12Chigvincev also didn't return for season 33, though he hadn't been announced to return before this anyway.
07:18Either way, he shared that the arrest, quote,
07:20"...ruined everything," affecting both his personal and professional life.
07:24He also talked about the impact of his mugshot going viral and what it was like going anywhere after that.
07:29In that case, there would never be a mugshot in the magazines.
07:33There would never be a news headline that I've been arrested.
07:37And it makes it easier to exist.
07:40Number 24, Brooke Burke-Charves' shocking elimination.
07:44After winning season 7, Brooke Burke probably thought that looming dark cloud of elimination was behind her.
07:49She certainly couldn't have expected it when she joined Tom Bergeron as co-host in season 10.
07:54Because I won the show that year, they didn't call me because they're like,
08:00we know you're a host, we know you're a bar-wound princess, you've got the mirror ball, you don't need to audition.
08:06But after season 17, she learned it would be her last.
08:09Brooke is no stranger to the fickleness of showbiz,
08:12but she admits she was disappointed and shocked to have the decision made for her.
08:16Oh, and did we mention she says she was only told she was out mere weeks before the new season premiered?
08:20We are live and we are coming right back.
08:23In fact, that might be the biggest scandal of all.
08:26Talk about dancing around the issue.
08:28I really wanted that gig.
08:30It was a blessing.
08:31It was an amazing experience as a host.
08:34It was so fun.
08:35Number 23, Season 27 Voting Glitch.
08:39We're pretty sure this is one of those scandals every reality show with audience votes can relate to.
08:44In season 27, as the pairs waited with bated breath to see if they'd make it another week,
08:48Tom Bergeron announced there'd been a system hiccup and none of the phone votes had been counted.
08:53Time for some results.
08:54Now, due to technical difficulties, last night's phone vote is unavailable,
08:58so we'll combine your online votes from last night with the judges' scores from last night and tonight.
09:03Viewers, celebs, and pros all learned the news at basically the same time.
09:08You'd think the fairest move would be to hold off the elimination until the problem was fixed, right?
09:12No.
09:13We can now tell our couples whether they are safe or in jeopardy.
09:17They went with online votes and judges' scores alone,
09:20sending Alpine Skier and the show's first visually impaired contestant, Danielle Umstead, home.
09:25They look as sad as you no doubt feel to say goodbye to you tonight.
09:30Yeah.
09:30It's been fun.
09:31Judges too, by the way.
09:33Number 22, Season 34 Brings All the Drama.
09:37Before the season premiered, there were whispers that something was off behind the scenes.
09:41No! No! No!
09:44That's why I'm a little worried.
09:46Several pros were reportedly left feeling demoralized by lackluster partners
09:50who didn't seem interested in doing the work,
09:52and in some cases, were just difficult to deal with.
09:55And it wasn't just the pros who felt it.
09:57Rumor has it, producers were also keeping a close eye on some pros
10:01they felt really needed to step up their game.
10:03He'll say to me, I see who you truly are.
10:07A girl on whom I can rely.
10:10Then there was the cancelled fan giveaway by Whitney Levitt and her partner Mark Ballas,
10:14which ABC reportedly shut down,
10:16and a rumored awkward encounter between Danielle Fischel and Levitt.
10:20Years from now, we might forget who won, but we'll remember the drama.
10:24It just really sucks, because Mark and I just want to do something really special for you guys
10:28that have shown us so much support and love for us and the show.
10:32We're gonna get creative.
10:33We're gonna think of something.
10:35We'll think of something else.
10:36Number 21. Aaron Andrews' Supposed Eye Roll.
10:40In the semi-final of Season 20, decorated U.S. soldier and motivational speaker Noah Galloway
10:45proposed to his then-girlfriend Jamie live on air.
10:48Longtime co-host Aaron Andrews' peculiar reaction drew lots of viewer backlash.
10:53First of all, I have to say, I am with you a thousand percent.
10:57The viewers accused her of rolling her eyes at the proposal.
11:01However, Andrews took to social media to clear up the confusion.
11:04She responded by saying she just made an awkward, ugly cry face at the worst time.
11:09Felt like I was getting misty, and so I made an eye roll.
11:12That's how you felt!
11:14People were mad, right?
11:15Oh, pissed!
11:16Viewers decided to leap to the harshest possible conclusion.
11:19Galloway defended Andrews the next day, calling accusations that the co-host was trying to ruin the
11:24moment completely off-base.
11:26I mean, Aaron Andrews is amazing.
11:28So yeah, when I woke up this morning and people were saying that social media and all these
11:32people, I was like, they're crazy.
11:34That is not Aaron.
11:35Number 20.
11:36Vote for Jerry.
11:37Daytime TV show host Jerry Springer and his partner, professional dancer Kim Johnson,
11:42were consistently among the lowest-scored Season 3 duos week-to-week.
11:46It was mainly the audience votes that saved them from elimination.
11:49They lasted a good seven weeks before they were eliminated.
11:52And I kept saying, everyone, and the people who saw the show will vouch for it.
11:56I said, please stop calling.
11:59Get me out of here!
12:01The influx of votes for Springer was generally attributed to controversial radio hosts Opie
12:06Hughes and Anthony Cumia.
12:07They began plugging his appearance on the show, encouraging their listeners to keep Springer
12:11in the competition, regardless of his performance.
12:14Let's just say he wasn't the lightest on his feet.
12:17Oh Annie, I'm not your daddy, but baby, I'm not your daddy.
12:27At least he had fun.
12:28Number 19.
12:30Season 1 Dance Off.
12:31When General Hospital actress Kelly Monaco and her professional partner Alec Mazzo won the
12:36very first season of the show, the fan reaction was swift.
12:39Season 1's runner-up, John O'Hurley, had scored consistently higher throughout the first season.
12:44The judges said Monaco had simply bested him in the final round.
12:48The actress was inundated with criticism.
12:50And the integrity of the show was questioned by a vocal minority.
12:54The more I think about it, the more I've just got to remind myself,
12:56it's a dance show and it's fun and I'm going to go out and have a good time.
13:00I'm going to try and not put that pressure on myself.
13:02The controversy led to a rematch a few months later.
13:05The rules were changed to only account for the audience's vote,
13:09which made O'Hurley and his partner Charlotte Jorgensen the winners by a narrow 1% lead.
13:14But overriding its own finale result wasn't a good look for the show.
13:18A rematch has not been staged since.
13:20I'm dancing every night on Broadway, either on Broadway or somewhere around the country in Chicago.
13:26So I still have my job.
13:29Number 18, Hough Dynasty.
13:32Brother and sister Derek and Julianne Hough are giants on the dance floor.
13:35The pros have had their share of glory on Dancing with the Stars.
13:38So when Julianne became a permanent judge on the panel in season 19,
13:42it seemed like a solid choice.
13:44Except for one small hiccup.
13:46Derek Hough was still in the competition.
13:48I'm nervous because, um, you know, judges are,
13:53judging is a strange place to be in.
13:56The ethics of siblings judging siblings became a hot topic as some,
14:00including fellow pro dancer Karina Smirnoff,
14:03questioned the newest addition to the panel.
14:05Accusations that Julianne was favoring her brother continued throughout the season,
14:09although Hough herself wholeheartedly denied this.
14:12Nice to meet you be.
14:13You know, good one.
14:15Should we do your random awkward dance off?
14:18Yeah, sure.
14:19Number 17, Jaleel White's rehearsal behavior.
14:25Usually when you step on someone's foot, you apologize.
14:28Apparently, season 14's Jaleel White had a very different reaction.
14:32On some level, in order to get through a difficult situation,
14:35we gotta look at our own part and take ownership of that.
14:38So what would you say your part in all of this is?
14:41Ah, ah, what is my part in all of this?
14:47I mean, that's a good question.
14:48Reports that he unleashed a torrent of verbal abuse on his professional partner,
14:52Kim Johnson, spread like wildfire.
14:54White, most known for playing Steve Urkel on Family Matters,
14:57was allegedly insulting Johnson for reacting when he stepped on her foot during rehearsal.
15:02Johnson's fellow pro, Mark Ballas, also got involved.
15:05White downplayed the severity of the incident,
15:08but didn't outright deny an argument happened.
15:10If there was lingering tension, though, it didn't show on the dance floor.
15:14The two were a great pair.
15:16I've definitely been feeling a lot of stress this week,
15:18and it's taken its toll on me.
15:20Wrong foot.
15:21No, oh, oh my gosh.
15:24Damn.
15:25But Kim's been there for me,
15:27and she's been giving me as much encouragement as she possibly can.
15:30You have to pretend that you are.
15:32Think like a ballroom dancer at this point.
15:35Shop, shop, shop, shop, shop, shop.
15:38Yes!
15:38Number 16, Bristol Palin stays in it.
15:42Sometimes a celebrity outstays their welcome on a season
15:45simply because of the controversy their appearance drums up.
15:48Bristol Palin, daughter of former Alaskan governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin,
15:53is a perfect example of that phenomenon.
15:55I've never gotten a 10 before in any of the dances.
15:58I'm probably the only one that's ever gotten to the finale with no 10s.
16:01She was a big get for the show.
16:03Her mother's VP run and her own teenage pregnancy were controversial enough.
16:07Accusations that Palin's spot was less about her dancing and more about the politics
16:11plagued her run on the show.
16:13Despite her consistently low scores, she ended up placing third.
16:17It got under enough viewer skin to get some pretty heavy media coverage.
16:20Our partnership, like I swear to God, I feel like you want to go home.
16:24I've never once not stuck up for you or been by your side every step of the way.
16:30Number 15, celebrities with previous dancing experience.
16:33Were you always into dancing and just...
16:35Yeah, I've actually, I've, I've been training in dance since I was three.
16:39I actually started competing when I was five.
16:41This is one of the biggest ongoing controversies surrounding Dancing with the Stars.
16:45Do stars with more dancing experience ruin the spirit of the show?
16:48Winners are especially vulnerable to this criticism.
16:51Season 19 winner and Fresh Prince star Alfonso Ribeiro began his career in a Broadway musical.
16:56Jennifer Grey, star of Dirty Dancing, won season 11.
17:00Jojo Siwa was a runner-up on the 30th season, but first came to prominence in the Dance Moms franchise.
17:06Some argue that since it's called Dancing with the Stars, being recognizable is qualification enough.
17:11Still, it creates an unlevel playing field.
17:14Plus, the real joy comes from watching non-dancers improve and fall in love with the art.
17:18Maybe the fine print should read,
17:20those with prior ballroom experience need not apply.
17:23No more
17:25Baby, don't hurt me
17:29Don't hurt me
17:31No more
17:33What is love?
17:36Number 14
17:38Tonya Harding's casting
17:40Season 26, also known as Dancing with the Stars athletes,
17:44pitted professional athletes against each other.
17:46ABC filled the cast with everyone from Olympic medalists to major league players.
17:50A scandal erupted, however, when it was announced that former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding was among the celebrity contestants.
17:56Man, Sasha's got his hands full.
17:58Yeah, there are a lot of full hands on this show, right?
18:00Yeah
18:01Go into this season
18:02Full hands
18:03Harding's infamous connection to the 1994 attack on her skating rival Nancy Kerrigan
18:08found her banned from the sport and stripped of her U.S. championship win.
18:11While the show didn't seem to linger on the sordid details,
18:14her inclusion sparked another round of media scrutiny around her in the wake of the Oscar-winning biopic I, Tonya.
18:20Still, the criticism didn't stop her from achieving a third-place finish.
18:24She was dancing as if her life depended on it.
18:27I'm gonna nail these dance if he's going to kill me.
18:32You look better than people.
18:34And you did it.
18:35Number 13
18:36Conservative backlash against Chaz Bono
18:38Season 13 started off with a bang.
18:41Upon the cast release, some critics called for a boycott over the inclusion of Chaz Bono,
18:46a transgender activist and the son of pop superstar Cher.
18:49The backlash was almost immediate.
18:51Unfortunately, message boards and comment sections were ablaze with internet users swearing they'd never watch the show again.
18:58It was gratuitous rudeness, and I, and I just, I, I, I was just pissed off.
19:05I was just really upset.
19:07Over a decade on, it didn't seem to have much impact on the show's success.
19:11Instead, Bono was largely celebrated for his appearance, and millions tuned in to watch him make it roughly halfway through the season.
19:17The press attention may have even drawn more eyes to the season.
19:21I, I thought, I thought, I mean, I thought it would be, I thought it would be fun and, and, uh, yeah, physically challenging, get me in better shape.
19:28And I thought that it would be a way to kind of reach more people than I have thus far.
19:33Number 12
19:35Cheryl Burke and Drew Lachey rumors
19:37Gossip swirled around this season two partnership, whose steps were so in sync, it led them all the way to the coveted mirror ball.
19:44But that wasn't the only big headline the 98 Degrees member Drew Lachey and his pro Cheryl Burke polled during the show.
19:50Yeah, well, part of that was because you all were so great to watch dance, especially you two.
19:55It wasn't just that you're wonderful dancers, but it was very sexy.
19:58Rumors circulated online and in the tabloids that there was a genuine spark between them on and off stage.
20:05Both denied rumors of an affair. It was a particularly thorny situation, given that Lachey was married.
20:10She's been so supportive throughout the whole thing, you know, even coming to practices, just checking us out.
20:15Did you feel self-conscious about it at all?
20:17In the beginning, a little bit.
20:19Even years passing after their win didn't stop the media attention or speculation.
20:23Burke would later admit to having had romances with three of her celebrity partners,
20:28but only mention season 10's Chad Ochocinco Johnson by name.
20:31One. Yeah, that was one. That was one and done.
20:35Really?
20:35One and done. I've learned my lesson. Never do it again.
20:37Number 11
20:39Disgraced chef Paula Deen
20:40While the possible appearance had been rumored for years,
20:43the former Food Network star was announced as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars' 21st season.
20:48Many saw it as a desperate grab for headlines and an attempt to rehabilitate the disgraced celebrity chef's image.
20:54These are the good kind.
20:56The ones with no calories?
20:57I've cut the fat.
20:58Paula Deen cuts the fat as I eat the brownies.
21:02Just two years earlier, Deen landed in hot water over her admission to the continual use of a racial slur and allegations of discrimination.
21:10She lost her shows and several of her brand deals as a result.
21:13Deen was still seen as persona non grata when she was extended an invitation to appear on season 21.
21:19And what I hope I'm gonna get out of this is a bunch of new friends,
21:26and maybe lose some weight and a little better body.
21:30Number 10
21:31Carole Baskin's casting
21:33Netflix's outrageous and unexpected early COVID-era success Tiger King kept us all glued to the TV.
21:39It also ignited a firestorm of hatred for Carole Baskin, Joe Exotic's sworn enemy in the world of big cat conservation.
21:46There's nothing that I really want to say to any of these people.
21:50I know that the only reason that they are saying the things that they're saying is because they see me as a threat to their livelihood and to their ego.
21:58The documentary is full of accusations that Baskin was somehow responsible for her missing ex-husband's disappearance.
22:04Thus, there was immediate outrage over her appearance on Dancing with the Stars' 29th season.
22:10The family of Don Lewis, Carole's missing ex, even paid for an attack ad to run during the show.
22:15But as it usually does, if anything, it brought more eyes to the season.
22:19Baskin would only make it to the third week before getting the chop.
22:22About half the people will tune in to see me fail miserably, and the other 50% will tune in to see me succeed.
22:29So, I think we have a pretty good audience out there of people that both love and hate me.
22:34Number 9. Heather Morris' Elimination
22:36Most famous for her role as an air-headed cheerleader on Glee, Heather Morris was no stranger to dancing professionally.
22:43This led to a bit of pre-season controversy in itself, with some suggesting her professional experience gave her an unfair advantage.
22:50But the former backup dancer for Beyoncé wasn't safe from the public vote.
22:54You're gonna hear, you know, them criticize you a little bit more about your footwork and your posture,
22:59which is like, it's totally accurate, I understand.
23:01Because if I'm already trained, it's like, it's just something that they need to, you know, pick on and look at.
23:08Even after repeatedly getting great scores from the judges,
23:11she was unexpectedly and controversially eliminated on Dancing's 24th season.
23:16In fact, the week she was eliminated, she and her partner, Maxim Schmierkowski, were the only duo to get a perfect score.
23:24Something happens, maybe votes, like, people forget to vote,
23:28maybe people think that she's so good that it doesn't, you know, she'll be fine, that type of stuff, so, I don't know.
23:33Number 8. Season 16 voting glitch
23:36Long before she was burning up the screen in Dune, Euphoria, and Challengers, Zendaya was mostly known for her work on the Disney Channel.
23:43She took part in Dancing with the Stars' 16th season, and nearly won the entire thing.
23:48You got three tens because of a ten right here.
23:51Oh, stop it.
23:52Bang!
23:57A voting glitch during Finale Week led to fan voting via ABC.com being unavailable.
24:02Country singer Kelly Pickler emerged the winner.
24:05Many fans argued Zendaya and her popular partner Valentin Schmierkowski would have won if not for the voting mishap.
24:12It's hard to say if that's true, as Pickler and her partner Derek Hough absolutely slayed the finale performance.
24:18But the season 16 finale will always be a sore spot for many fans.
24:22Start to some things that I'm going to be doing.
24:24You know, it's just the beginning and I feel like, you know, you never look at it as the end or something that's negative, you know.
24:30It's just a platform for me to continue my music and, you know, everything else that I have set up.
24:34So I think it's, you know, a great, a great start.
24:37Number 7, Adrienne Peterson's casting.
24:39The producers behind the show came under fire when they announced former NFL running back Adrienne Peterson was joining the cast.
24:46It wasn't his football background that gave viewers pause.
24:49It was his past legal issues.
24:51Yet another star NFL player is benched after being indicted on an abuse charge.
24:56In 2014, Peterson was charged and pleaded no contest to reckless or negligent injury to a child.
25:02The ensuing scandal caused legal friction with the NFL and tarnished his public image.
25:07Many people, like former cast member and professional dancer Sharna Burgess, were vehemently opposed to his casting.
25:13Producers framed his appearance on the show as a way of giving the former player another chance.
25:17Peterson only lasted four weeks.
25:20Number 6, Maxim Schmierkowski vs. Hope Solo.
25:23Some partnerships on the show are like matches made in heaven.
25:26Others are like matches made somewhere else.
25:28Back, side, together, forward, side, then you started talking in the middle.
25:37I've barely said anything today.
25:40In her memoir, professional soccer player and season 13 contestant Hope Solo detailed the unpleasant and adversarial relationship she had with her dancing pro, Maxim Schmierkowski.
25:49Describing his rough and unforgiving approach, Solo notably accused him of slapping her during rehearsals.
25:56The pro reportedly denied these allegations.
25:58He only added fuel to the fire when he later was asked to F, marry, and kill three of his former partners on the show.
26:05Three guesses who ended up in the kill slot.
26:07Their feud only became more public, with both having since made it very clear just how much they can't stand each other.
26:13She's not somebody I talk about. I don't like her, and that's the end of it.
26:19Number 5, Anna Delvey joins the cast.
26:22You know how we said being a star is basically that all participants have to be?
26:26Well, season 33 had many of us wondering when con artists started counting as a star.
26:32Welcome to Dancing with the Stars. Did you ever think that this could be a possibility for you?
26:36No, that wasn't the last one on my list.
26:38Anna Delvey's casting invited plenty of backlash, with some accusing the show of glorifying a criminal.
26:45Bedazzling her ankle monitor didn't exactly help.
26:47Some even called for a boycott, and it didn't help that Delvey had permission from ICE to travel to L.A. for the show while on house arrest.
26:54Well, I had to ask for the permission for the authorities for ICE to, yeah, give me permission to travel out of state.
27:01But the audience spoke, and she became the first contestant eliminated.
27:05Afterward, she called the show, quote, exploitative, and said she felt used.
27:09Still, her exit will definitely go down in Dancing with the Stars history.
27:13What are you going to take away from this competition?
27:16Nothing.
27:19Number 4, Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess win.
27:22People always have their favorites in the contest, but sometimes the public chooses massive popularity over dance skills.
27:29That was what clearly happened when media personality Bobby Bones and his professional partner Sharna Burgess were crowned the season 27 Mirrorball champions.
27:37We're still processing.
27:39Yes.
27:39We had the worst odds when this whole thing started.
27:43The duo consistently got low scores, even as the season came to a close, which made many question the importance of dancing ability at all.
27:50Critics, fans, and commentators felt the show had finally jumped the shark.
27:54During Dancing with the Stars' next season, viewers assumed an overhaul to the elimination process was a direct result of Bones' win over more deserving performers.
28:03You've done okay, though, Bruno.
28:05What do you think?
28:05Surreal.
28:06Number 3, protesters rushed the stage.
28:09Swimmer Ryan Lochte had only just returned from his scandalous Rio escapades when he appeared on season 23.
28:15The gold medalist landed in hot water when he lied about being the victim of an armed robbery.
28:20He and his teammates mischaracterized an incident of disorderly conduct that occurred while they were in Brazil for the Olympics.
28:27The version we're hearing now is much more about a negotiated settlement to cover up some dumb behavior.
28:35And that's why I'm taking full responsibility for it, is because I over-exaggerated that story.
28:42Lochte's involvement on Dancing with the Stars only added fuel to the fire.
28:45During the season premiere, a pair of protesters rushed Lochte on stage, calling the swimmer a liar for his conduct abroad.
28:52The incident was obscured on the live broadcast, but was widely reported afterward.
28:57Watch Dancing pro Derek Huff pull the curtain on these audience members, also sporting those anti-Lochte shirts.
29:05Get out of here, come on.
29:06Get out.
29:07It's a good show, a positive show.
29:09Number 2, Tom Bergeron fired.
29:12After steering the ship at the show's helm for 28 seasons, the longtime host was shockingly dismissed after disagreements with the producers.
29:19Indeed, he and co-host Aaron Andrews were let go before season 29.
29:24Bergeron claims his firing was due to his advocating for non-political contestants.
29:28Because I think the show at its best is an oasis from everything else.
29:35Yes.
29:35So that was one that I had issue with.
29:39He thought the producers agreed with him.
29:41But then, when the cast of his final season was announced, he made his displeasure known in as professional a way as possible.
29:48This left a bad enough taste in the producers' mouths that he was let out of his contract early.
29:53And as we saw earlier, the show hired Tyra Banks to replace him.
29:56Viewers couldn't help but miss Bergeron's well-practiced and stalwart presence on the program.
30:01He is the safety belt that will save your life for everything, whether it's demonstrators coming on the set, prompter going down and just winging it, me having the wrong card, me flubbing up on this man.
30:11It's fourth and three.
30:12He's got a touchdown.
30:13He'll win that game.
30:14It's insane.

30:31Number 1. Sean Spicer's casting.
30:34In the fall of 2019, the 2020 election was already shaping up to be a contentious one.
30:39And that was before COVID-19 was even a thing.
30:42Casting the controversial former press secretary for the Trump administration didn't do much to help matters.
30:47In fact, it caused an uproar on social media and even host Tom Bergeron couldn't hold back his displeasure at such a political contestant.
30:54Rather than be coy, I had hoped that when we came back, there wouldn't be any political lightning rods of any party affiliation.
31:07But Spicer's stint, which ended week 9, was just as controversial.
31:11Trump himself tweeted out to his followers that they should vote to keep him in.
31:15His lackluster skills, constant low scores, and success in the public vote made sure he overstayed his welcome in the competition.
31:22Did you ever think that you would be here on Dancing with the Stars?
31:26No, no, no, no.
31:27This was never, I mean, not even close to being in the cards.
