Rise in number of typhoons of 'serious concern' — climate expert

The rise in the number of typhoons hitting the Philippines this year is of “serious concern,” said a climate expert in the region, who warned there may be more storms before the end of the year.

"Recent events across the region show that there is an uptick in these typhoons. So it's something of serious concern as our oceans warm and climate change has more and more impacts on our communities,” said Professor Adam Switzer based in Singapore’s Asian School of the Environment at the Nanyang Technological University.

Switzer spoke to Reuters on Monday, November 10, as one of the year's most powerful storms in the Philippines, Super Typhoon Uwan has killed at least four people, authorities said.

The storm is the 21st this year in the Philippines, coming after Typhoon Tino killed 224 last week, with five dead in Vietnam.

00:00the Philippines gets hit by typhoons every year and has done for thousands of years
00:15is the number high in 21 this year it's on the upper bounds and it's it's certainly
00:23some concern but you know the year's not over yet this might not be the final one for the year
00:29recent events across the region showed that there is an uptick in these typhoons so it's
00:35something of serious concern as our oceans warm and climate change has more and more impacts on
00:40our communities this is a very clear example that you know these typhoons are likely to happen more
00:46in the future and more frequently and we need to keep people as safe as possible the Philippines
00:51is always going to be vulnerable to tropical cyclones so it sits on the western edge of the
00:56pacific the pacific is warming at a rate that's unprecedented and that warmth generates very very
01:03strong tropical cyclones and so it's likely that our low-lying communities in places like the
01:08Philippines are going to be affected by cyclones going forward and it's probably going to get
01:14worse before it gets better typhoons take their energy from the ocean so as our oceans warm there's
01:20more energy there for them to draw from and therefore they're becoming stronger in time and so this is a
01:27concerning issue because we've got warming oceans both in the western pacific and the south china sea
01:33that means that our cyclone systems are becoming more and more intense and their impacts are likely to
01:39be much larger well the tropics of southeast asia is really a hot spot of climate impacts we've got
01:45changing rainfall patterns we've got intensifying cyclones we've got growing populations particularly
01:51coastal populations that are going to be at risk and so this is really a hotbed of where the activity
01:58is in terms of natural hazards
02:28we're going to be getting better and we've got Advent prototyли to give to people who very seriously
