Typhoon Kalmaegi has devastated the Philippines and central Vietnam, killing at least 188 people and destroying homes, roads, and farmland. Scientists warn that climate change is fueling more powerful storms as rising sea temperatures pack more moisture into typhoons. Experts say such extreme weather events are becoming harder to predict and increasingly deadly, particularly in regions unprepared for their intensity. Kalmaegi’s destruction coincides with global climate talks in Brazil, highlighting the urgent need for action against greenhouse gas emissions.

01:12So, what we identified is in general, the tropical Indo-Pacific is experiencing some changes
01:18So what we identified is, in general, the tropical Indo-Pacific is experiencing some changes
01:34in weather patterns, in particular in something called the Pacific Walker Circulation, that
01:42is the atmospheric component of ENSO, and in the southern oscillations.
01:49So now, this particular changes in these weather patterns, circulation patterns in the atmosphere,
01:58they seem to be linked to an increase in the frequency of heat waves and extreme precipitation
02:04across Southeast Asia.
02:12And another aspect that perhaps is a bit less talked about is there is an increase in
02:42rapid intensification events of these typhoons that are rather difficult to predict by current
02:51models, and because of that, they are particularly dangerous.
02:55So I think some of these extremes are happening in regions that didn't experience some of these
03:09extremes before, and therefore they are unprepared.
03:16And therefore the damage and impact are going to be much higher than in regions that experience
03:30already these extreme events.
03:31And therefore they put in place certain measures to counteract the impacts of these events.
03:37So how does the negatively affect the weather culture?
03:42Unfortunately they are taking place certain measures so that we can't manage communication
03:44with temperatures and more Unterschiede.
